International Institute Of Information Technology, Bangalore

Bengaluru Rural, Karnataka Est. 1998 Official site Updated
NIRF Engineering
#69

IIIT Bangalore fills its own seats, and its admission page carries the point in capitals above the programme tabs. A JEE Main or JEE Advanced All India Rank still decides who gets in, but the ranking happens inside the institute's own lists, and those lists reopen through the summer, so computer science closed at 3311 in the first list of 2026 and was still being offered at 6675 at the end of July. The four-year B.Tech is newer than the name suggests: 210 undergraduate seats appear in the institute's government filings for 2024-25, and none at all in any year before that.

Overview

Read the name carefully, because it does not mean what the acronym usually means. IIIT-B is a deemed to be university, established in 1998 and run as a registered not-for-profit society funded jointly by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry, as the institute states on its about page.

Two other kinds of institution get confused with it because of that acronym. An Indian Institute of Technology is created by an Act of Parliament. The information technology institutes the centre runs with state and industry partners fill their seats from a national allotment. IIIT-B is neither, and the institute prints the consequence above its programme tabs with the negative in capitals: admissions to IIIT-B are not done through JoSAA.

Four departments and one centre carry the teaching, and the list on the institute's home page is narrower than a general engineering college's: Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Digital Humanities and Societal Systems, and the Centre for Applied Sciences. That fourth department is the one nobody expects on a computing campus. Alongside it the institute runs an M.Sc. in Digital Society, which it calls the first course of its kind in the country on its Explore IIIT-B page.

Roll counts stay small. The same home page counts 423 B.Tech students, 598 in the integrated M.Tech, 362 in the M.Tech and 19 in the postgraduate diploma, and puts the faculty at 60+. The address is 26/C, Electronics City Phase 1, Hosur Road, opposite Infosys Gate 10, Bengaluru 560100, on the institute's contact page. One warning about paperwork: the national higher education survey records the institute's district as Bengaluru Rural, while the campus itself sits in Electronics City on the city's southern edge. Both entries are real, and the district is an administrative label rather than a location.

Courses & Fees

An applicant can enter IIIT-B on three degree tracks, and the entrance test and the total bill differ on each one.

ProgrammeDurationEntranceTuition, whole programme
B.Tech in CSE, ECE or AI and DS4 yearsJEE Main or JEE Advanced rankRs 23,82,000
Integrated M.Tech in CSE or ECE5 yearsJEE Main or JEE Advanced rankRs 31,20,000
M.Tech in CSE, ECE or AI and DS2 yearsGATE scoreRs 11,04,000

The per-semester rate is not constant, so a family that multiplies the first semester by eight will under-budget the degree. Tuition steps up in the third year and again in the fourth, and the integrated degree steps up once more in the fifth.

Fee head, 2026-27 entryAmount
Tuition, years 1 and 2Rs 2,76,000 per semester
Tuition, year 3Rs 3,04,000 per semester
Tuition, year 4Rs 3,35,000 per semester
Tuition, year 5, integrated M.Tech onlyRs 3,69,000 per semester
Hostel and campus facility feeRs 39,000 per semester
Catering and food servicesRs 28,800 per semester
Medical insuranceRs 3,000 per annum
Library deposit, refundable on graduationRs 4,000
Hostel caution deposit, refundable on graduationRs 15,000

Nothing on that list is optional. Both undergraduate programmes are residential and require compulsory stay in the hostel, on that same page, and the M.Tech carries the same condition, which the institute justifies by the classes, tutorials and laboratory sessions that run past working hours and into weekends, per the M.Tech (CSE) page. The two-year M.Tech is billed at Rs 2,76,000 a semester throughout, with no step-up, on that same page. Add a laptop, books and travel to whichever total applies, and read every figure as the published rate for a 2026-27 entrant, since the institute reserves the right to revise them.

Admissions

One form covers all five programmes entered from 10+2. The B.Tech and integrated M.Tech seats are filled through a common application, and individual applications to the respective programmes are not needed, as the admissions page puts it. A candidate needs a 10+2 pass with a first class grade and Mathematics among the subjects, plus a valid JEE Main score from the admission year, and the merit position taken is the better of that candidate's JEE Main and JEE Advanced All India Rank.

The Olympiad channel is the only way in that ignores that rank. Candidates selected for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp or the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp in 2025 or 2026 are considered for every programme, and up to 5 seats cumulatively across all of them are filled from those camps, on the same page.

Postgraduate entry runs on a different exam and a different calendar. The M.Tech in computer science admits on the Computer Science and Information Technology paper of GATE and asks for 65% in a four-year bachelor's degree in engineering in one of six named branches, per the M.Tech (CSE) admissions page. The institute states on that same page that there is no fixed GATE cut-off, and that offers in 2025 were made up to a GATE score of 635.

Everything is filed at admissions.iiitb.net, the institute's own portal, and the dates published there are the only ones that apply. Pre-registration for the undergraduate cycle opened on 25 February 2026, complete applications were taken from 20 April once the JEE Main final results were out, and the window shut on 10 June, on the admissions page. The M.Tech window ran from 19 March to 4 May 2026, on the M.Tech (CSE) page. A missed date costs the year, because there is no national round waiting to catch a candidate later.

Cutoff

How high a rank has to be depends on how late in the season it is still in play, and IIIT-B publishes the closing rank at every stage. The table below tracks the 2026 undergraduate cycle from the first list to the final phase.

Live online round 3(c), 31 Julynot listed9219910475619625

Follow the computer science column down. A seat that closed at 3311 in the second week of June was still being offered at 6675 seven weeks later, in the institute's own round-by-round results, so a rank that looks hopeless against the first list can be comfortably inside the line by the end of the season.

The slide is not one-way, though, and the bottom row is not automatically the loosest. Round 3 ran in three phases: the institute closed phase 3(a) on 28 July because all seats were filled, continued into 3(b) on 29 July subject to availability, and held the final phase 3(c) on 31 July, with everyone already registered for Round 3 eligible for each phase, on that same page. Across those phases the closing ranks move in both directions. Between 3(b) and 3(c), artificial intelligence and data science tightened from 9538 to 9219 and integrated computer science from 7791 to 7561, while electronics and communication loosened from 8756 to 9104 and computer science dropped off the list entirely. What a candidate controls is registration: fresh registration inside the deadline is mandatory for each live online round, and the Round 3 invitation went out to candidates holding a best JEE rank of up to 11,000.

Set against the previous cycle, only computer science finished tighter. The institute lists 2025 closing ranks of 6942 for B.Tech computer science, 8432 for artificial intelligence and data science, 8844 for electronics and communication, 7357 for the integrated computer science degree and 9101 for integrated electronics, on the same page. Line those up against the last 2026 figures and computer science closed ahead of 2025 at 6675, while the other four all closed behind: 9219 against 8432, 9104 against 8844, 7561 against 7357, and 9625 against 9101. A single year of movement is not a trend, but it does mean last year's closing rank is a weak guide to next year's.

For the M.Tech the currency is a GATE score rather than a rank, and it drops as the lists run.

For the M.Tech, the score that lets a candidate register and the score that wins a seat are published separately and are not the same. IIIT-B set the eligibility score for computer science in online round 2 at 613, then closed that round's offers at 625, per its announcements and results. Registering on 613 buys a place in the round, not a place in the class.

Placements

No B.Tech placement record exists yet, and the reason is arithmetic. The first undergraduate intake was 2024-25, so no four-year cohort has reached graduation, and every undergraduate placement row in the institute's NIRF 2026 engineering submission reads zero. Three years of filed medians exist for the two postgraduate tracks, and those are the only placement figures this page will show.

Programme, graduating yearGraduatingPlacedMedian salary
Integrated M.Tech, 2024-25120119Rs 39,71,000
Integrated M.Tech, 2023-24120107Rs 29,37,000
Integrated M.Tech, 2022-23110102Rs 27,30,000
M.Tech, 2024-25180169Rs 21,96,000
M.Tech, 2023-24174174Rs 20,00,000
M.Tech, 2022-23173170Rs 21,00,000

The five-year integrated M.Tech posts the strongest figure by a wide margin. In 2024-25 it placed 119 of its 120 graduates at a median of Rs 39,71,000, up from Rs 29,37,000 for the batch before it, in that submission. That is a rise of roughly a third in twelve months on a cohort of 120, small enough that one strong hiring season can move the middle of the list. Plan a loan against the three-year run, not against the newest row.

The two-year M.Tech is bigger and steadier. It placed 169 of 180 graduates in 2024-25 at a median of Rs 21,96,000, in the same filing, against Rs 20,00,000 and Rs 21,00,000 in the two years before it, so its middle has barely shifted across three cycles. Choosing between five years here and two is therefore a choice between two very different filed medians, not between two versions of the same campus.

Seat Matrix

Seat counts differ sharply across the five programmes, and computer science is where the institute has put its capacity.

ProgrammeSeats, 2026 entry
B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering120
B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science90
B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering30
Integrated M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering60
Integrated M.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering60

Counted by discipline instead of by degree, the same intake reads 180 across computer science, 90 across electronics and communication and 90 in artificial intelligence and data science, in the scholarship table on that same page. Scarcity has not made electronics the harder seat to win. B.Tech electronics is the smallest programme at 30 seats, yet its closing rank sat behind B.Tech computer science in every list where both appeared, and the integrated electronics degree closed later still, at 9625 in the final phase.

The postgraduate side was rearranged to make room for the new undergraduate programme, and two filed years show the swap in a single column.

Sanctioned intake2024-252023-24
B.Tech, 4-year2100
M.Tech, 2-year180180
Integrated M.Tech, 5-year60180

The year IIIT-B declared its first 210 undergraduate seats is the year it cut the sanctioned integrated M.Tech intake from 180 to 60, in that filing. Read the placement table with that in mind. The integrated batches that produced those medians were admitted at 120 first-year students a year, per the same filing, so the programme now taking 60 is half the size of the cohorts whose salaries appear above.

Rankings

One government ranking carries IIIT-B, and only one. NIRF 2025 ranks it 69 in engineering on a score of 50.46, and its name is absent from the university, overall and research tables for the same year. Within engineering it is the best-placed institution in Bengaluru, with M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology at 75 and Christ University at 76 behind it.

NIRF 2025 parameter, EngineeringScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources68.33
Research and Professional Practice24.19
Graduation Outcomes71.27
Outreach and Inclusivity59.94
Perception24.63

Nearly fifty points separate the highest of those five scores from the lowest, and that spread describes the institute better than the rank does. The top score, 71.27 for graduation outcomes, restates in ranking form what the placement rows have already shown. Research and professional practice at 24.19 is the lowest of the five, which is what a volume-weighted research measure does to a campus of 60+ faculty set against multi-faculty universities, and perception at 24.63 sits just above it, a national opinion score being hard to move for an institute this small and this narrow. Teaching, learning and resources at 68.33 is the second strongest of the five.

Four institutes carrying "information technology" in their names reach that 2025 engineering table, and IIIT-B is third among them, behind Hyderabad at 38 and the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi at 63, ahead of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management at Gwalior at 96. Their legal statuses differ as much as their ranks do, so a shared naming convention is not a shared category.

Facilities & Infrastructure

First-year students do not live on the campus most applicants picture. Anyone admitted to the first year of the B.Tech, integrated M.Tech or M.Tech is housed at the IIITB Extension Campus at Hosa Road, near Electronic City, which the institute runs as an integral part of itself with the same set of faculty members, and which carries its own classrooms and laboratories, twin-sharing hostels kept separate for men and women, dining and student support services, per its extension campus page. Walking around the Electronics City block and judging the place on that means judging the wrong buildings for the year you will actually spend there.

Research is split across named centres rather than gathered into one office, and the home page lists ten of them: the E-Health Research Centre, the Machine Intelligence and Robotics Centre of Excellence, the Centre for IT and Public Policy, the Cognitive Computing Centre of Excellence, the Centre for Accessibility in the Global South, the COMET Technology Innovation Hub, the IIITB Innovation Centre, the Modular Open-Source Identity Platform, the Centre for Open Societal Systems and the Centre for Digital Public Infrastructure. MOSIP is the one worth pausing on, since it puts a piece of national digital identity infrastructure on a campus this small.

The library began with a small collection donated by the founder-director, Prof. S. Sadagopan, at the institute's original ITPL campus, and now runs on Koha with a public catalogue, subscribing to the ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, Institute of Physics journals, JSTOR, American Physical Society journals and Springer computer science ebooks, with faculty reaching them off campus through VPN and students through Shibboleth, on its library collection page. One caution on disabled access: the NIRF 2026 return reports lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets in more than 80% of buildings, plus walking aids, wheelchairs and transport between buildings, but the form asks about the institution's buildings as a whole and never separates Electronics City from Hosa Road.

Hostel

We could not find official hostel and accommodation details for International Institute Of Information Technology, Bangalore. Check the official website for the current hostel facilities and fees.

Faculty

The home page puts the faculty at 60+. What that headcount is made of shows up only in the NIRF roster, and the column that matters there is association type rather than designation. The regular block is doctoral and long-serving: Balaji Parthasarathy joined in 2000, Srinath Srinivasa in 2001 and Debabrata Das in 2002, and all three were still recorded as working at the institute in the 2025 engineering submission. The adhoc or contractual block in that same roster runs to 30 of the 77 people listed, 27 of them assistant professors, and 25 of those 27 hold a master's degree rather than a PhD. Which block teaches your core courses is a fair question to put to an open day.

Sponsored research is growing. The institute reported 127 sponsored projects drawn from 88 funding agencies in 2024-25, against 118 projects and 80 agencies the year before, and 6 patents published with 4 granted in calendar 2024, in its NIRF 2026 submission. The research population carrying that work is thin: 38 full-time and 54 part-time PhD students for 2024-25 in the same return, and only 2 full-time doctorates awarded across that whole year. That thinness is what the research and professional practice score of 24.19 in the ranking table is measuring.

official-report

NAAC has assessed IIIT-B twice, and the second cycle ended in an A+. The institute announced the grade on its own news page, which places A+ in the council's "very good performance" band and names the seven criteria the assessment covered, running from curricular aspects and teaching, learning and evaluation through research, infrastructure, student support and governance to institutional values and best practices.

Its authority to award degrees comes from deemed to be university status rather than from an Act of Parliament or a state legislature, and its public disclosure is filed under exactly that heading. The AICTE mandatory disclosure publishes the self study report and accreditation certificate for NAAC cycle 1 and cycle 2 side by side, together with the extension of approval, the programme list and the enrolment and placement records for the last three years. A NAAC grade and an AICTE extension of approval both expire and are renewed on their own clocks, so open that page and read the dates on the certificates themselves before committing to an admission cycle, rather than trusting a grade quoted second-hand.

Scholarships

Six funding routes exist here, and they range from a single student to an entire gender cohort. Utkarsha is the narrowest: a full tuition fee waiver for the top-ranked student admitted to the B.Tech or the integrated M.Tech through JEE with an NTA Common Rank List position between 1 and 999, covering the first three years of the B.Tech or the first four of the integrated degree, on the admissions page.

Prerna reaches the most students. It is open to every girl student admitted to the B.Tech and integrated M.Tech programmes in computer science, electronics and communication, and artificial intelligence and data science, capped at 10% of each batch intake, which the institute works out as 18 places in computer science, 9 in electronics and communication and 9 in artificial intelligence and data science, 36 in all for 2026-27, in the table on that same page. Selection inside each programme runs on the JEE rank.

Four further routes open once a student has enrolled, all set out on the same page. The Dean's Merit List scholarship goes to the top 10% on merit, needs a 3.6 CGPA to be listed at all, and is awarded automatically rather than applied for. Integrated M.Tech students holding a valid GATE score by the time they start their final year qualify for an AICTE scholarship in that year, which is a quiet argument for sitting GATE even on a five-year degree. The Student Benevolent Fund is the need-based route, for students whose parents' or guardians' annual income is under Rs 11 lakh and who cannot raise a student loan from a bank, assessed on an income certificate rather than on marks. Corporate awards from Reliance Foundation, Tata Foundation, Micron, Intel, HGS and CGI have reached students in past years, and the institute says it will facilitate an application when a company announces one, which is not the same as offering one itself.

Voices

Student Reviews

No rating appears in this section, because IIIT-B publishes no student satisfaction survey and an average assembled from listing-site stars is not something this page will pass off as evidence. Three harder things are available instead. The round-by-round closing ranks show precisely how much demand each of the five undergraduate programmes drew across the 2026 season, which is a measurement rather than a mood. The filed placement rows keep the integrated M.Tech and the two-year M.Tech apart instead of averaging them into a campus figure that describes neither cohort. And because first year is spent at Hosa Road, the students who can describe first year accurately are not the ones an applicant meets on a visit to Electronics City.
