Gandhi Institute Of Technology & Management (gitam) University, Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh Est. 1980 Official site Updated

GITAM Visakhapatnam prints its tuition twice a year, not once. A first-year B.Tech computer science seat at Rushikonda is Rs 2,04,200 for semester one and Rs 2,04,200 again for semester two, and the same programme page that publishes those two figures adds that tuition will rise by 5% to 8% in the years after. The exam is the second thing to settle, because Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management runs its own admission test, the GAT, and an AP EAPCET rank turns up in its scholarship rules rather than in any B.Tech admission route it publishes. Every figure below sits next to the document it came from, and says which of the four GITAM campuses it describes.

Overview

GITAM is a private deemed-to-be university whose legal centre of gravity is the Visakhapatnam campus rather than any of its later sites. The University Grants Commission's Distance Education Bureau records it as a Deemed-To-Be-University recognised under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, at Gandhi Nagar, Rushikonda, Visakhapatnam 530045, with its year of establishment in that status given as July 2007. The teaching is older than the status: the university dates its founding to 1980 and names the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi as its inspiration, which is where the G in the acronym comes from.

Four campuses now carry the name, and only one of them is the original. GITAM's own campus page calls Visakhapatnam, established in 1980, the main hub of the university and the location holding the largest number of GITAM institutes. Hyderabad at Rudraram and Bengaluru at Doddaballapur are later additions, and GIMSR, the medical institute, sits at the same Rushikonda address as the main campus rather than anywhere else. A GITAM fee, rank or placement figure is worth nothing until you know which of those four it belongs to, and most listings do not say.

The university is not always consistent about its own size. One panel of its about page describes 12 schools across four campuses while a second panel on the same page describes 14. The counts that are audited rather than advertised come from the data GITAM filed for the national ranking, and they describe the institution as a whole rather than any one campus.

Courses & Fees

Read the fee table as a semester bill, because that is how GITAM writes it. Its fee page splits by campus and prints two columns, semester one and semester two of the first year, so the number you see is half of one year rather than the cost of a degree. The rows below are the Visakhapatnam column.

M.Tech, all specialisationsRs 69,050Rs 69,050
Master of ArchitectureRs 53,000Rs 53,000

Two conditions printed under those tables change the arithmetic more than any single row. Every programme page carries the same pair: a 3% discount for students who pay the whole first-year fee as one annual payment, and a warning that tuition will increase by 5% to 8% in the subsequent years. So a four-year total built by multiplying the published semester fee by eight is an underestimate by construction, and nobody quoting a single "GITAM B.Tech fee" is quoting the amount a graduating student will have paid.

The campus you are allotted moves the price too, and not by a fixed percentage. Computer science costs the same Rs 2,04,200 a semester at Hyderabad as at Visakhapatnam but Rs 1,79,700 at Bengaluru. The BBA gap is far wider: Rs 1,45,500 a semester at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam against Rs 75,000 at Bengaluru, which is close to half. Law runs at Visakhapatnam alone, so the LL.B. rates above have no equivalent anywhere else in the university.

Doctoral study is priced on a different sheet again, and it is the one place GITAM states an annual rather than a semester figure. A full-time Indian PhD candidate pays an application fee of Rs 1,200 and an annual fee of Rs 30,000 over three years, with no processing fee, while the four-year extramural route is charged at Rs 1,00,000 a year. Medicine is the gap in the published tables: MBBS and MD/MS are listed at GIMSR with no amount against them at all, so a medical fee has to come from GIMSR directly.

Admissions

There is no single GITAM entrance. Each programme names its own combination of a marks floor and a test, and the test is usually one GITAM runs itself.

Programme, VisakhapatnamMarks floorTest named on the programme page
B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering50% or 5.0 CGPA at 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematicsGAT, with a threshold that applies to the 50% to 60% band
B.A. LL.B. (Hons.)45% aggregate at Intermediate or 10+2, any disciplineGAT
B.Pharm50% or 5.0 CGPA at 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematics or biologyGAT
Master of Business Administration60% or 6.0 CGPA in a bachelor's degreeGBAT, CAT, MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP or AP/TG ICET

Computer science is the only one of those four that publishes a numeric test threshold, and it applies to a narrow band of applicants. A candidate whose 10+2 aggregate falls between 50% and 60% has to clear one of three alternatives: over 42%, that is 85 out of 200, in GAT together with over 75% in class X; or over 55%, that is 110 out of 200, in GAT; or over 85% in class X. The same page adds a condition that belongs in a placement conversation rather than an admission one: such students must sign a waiver form where recruiters require more than 60% at 12th grade. Anyone entering on that route is agreeing in advance to be excluded from some campus drives.

The test itself is short and repeatable. GITAM's application portal describes GAT as a rolling exam held from January to May 2026, with up to 3 attempts per admission cycle and the best score used for both admission and scholarship eligibility. The B.Tech paper is a 2-hour computer-based test of 100 MCQs across physics, chemistry and mathematics with no negative marking, while the BBA and BCA paper covers English, quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning. It runs at 120+ cities on a first-come, first-served basis, with up to 3 preferred centres chosen at application and centre changes accepted up to 7 days before the test, and GITAM reserves the right to cancel a centre and move a candidate to the nearest alternate.

Skipping GAT is possible, and the portal is explicit about it: JEE Main, SAT, CUET and other national scores are accepted for direct admission. Two further terms are worth reading before you pay. The application fee is non-refundable in all circumstances, including withdrawal or ineligibility, and all disputes fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of courts at Visakhapatnam, whichever campus you end up on.

Cutoff

No closing rank exists for GITAM, and none can, because the university allots its own seats instead of drawing from a counselling authority's merit list. AP EAPCET, the test most people mean when they search for a GITAM cutoff, appears in no admission route on the programme pages or the application portal. Where it does appear is the money: EAPCET sits in GITAM's list of entrance exams accepted for a merit scholarship, alongside GAT, GBAT, JEE Main, CUET, SAT, CAT, MAT, NMAT and CMAT. A strong EAPCET rank lowers your fee here; it does not decide whether you get in.

Two numeric thresholds are published, and neither is a rank. The first is the GAT eligibility floor described above, where 85 out of 200 paired with a strong class X result, or 110 out of 200 on its own, opens computer science to a mid-band 12th result. The second is the scholarship banding, and GITAM has chosen not to print it: its scholarship policy states that the scholarship cutoff scores and slab eligibility shall remain aligned with the cutoffs followed in AY 2025, with no deviation unless formally revised, without reproducing the AY 2025 table anywhere on that page. So the number that decides your slab is real, is being applied, and is not public. Ask the admissions office for the slab table in writing before you treat a quoted waiver as certain.

Placements

GITAM's two accounts of its own placements are not the same institution. The Career Guidance Centre's page leads with three figures and attaches no year, no cohort and no campus to any of them: a highest package of 1.4 crore, 77% of students placed and 757 or more recruiters. The cohort-level numbers it files with the Ministry of Education for the ranking name the graduating year and count every head.

PG, one-year1919Rs 4,50,0000
PG, three-year5151Rs 12,00,0000

The four-year band, which is where the B.Tech and B.Pharm degrees sit, is the one that carries the university, with 2,397 of 3,646 graduates placed. The three-year band behaves completely differently: 330 placed against 983 who went on to further study, which is a bachelor's cohort moving on to a master's rather than a weak result, and it is also the band that drags any campus-wide placement percentage down. Neither band is anywhere near the front-page claim, and the filed median for the largest cohort of all is Rs 4,80,000.

One row in that filing should be read with care, because GITAM's own document disagrees with itself. Against the 2021-22 integrated postgraduate cohort it enters a median salary as the digits 3730000 and, in the words beside them, Three Lakhs Seventy Three Thousand, which are different numbers by a factor of ten. GITAM has entered a sanctioned intake of zero against that band since 2021-22, so it affects nothing current, but it is a reminder that a filed figure is a submission rather than an audit.

The professional schools file separately and read very differently from each other. Pharmacy at Visakhapatnam reports 120 B.Pharm graduates in 2023-24 with 100 placed at a median of Rs 3,20,000, against 110 graduates and 31 placed the year before, a jump that no brochure explains. The law school's trajectory is steeper still: 2 placed from 32 graduates in 2021-22, then 35 from 49, then 80 from 90 in 2023-24 at a median of Rs 4,70,000. A law applicant weighing this campus is looking at a placement record that only became credible in its most recent reported year.

The business school publishes its own class-by-class table, which is the most campus-specific placement document GITAM produces, and it prints the salary rows without naming a unit.

GITAM School of Business, VisakhapatnamClass of 2022Class of 2023Class of 2024
Number of offers148209170
Number of students placed106188138
Highest salary package8.9110.0016.75
Average salary package5.176.216.50

The offers column and the placed column are worth reading together, because 209 offers went to 188 students in the class of 2024 and the gap is repeat offers rather than extra people. The average moved from 5.17 to 6.50 across three classes while the highest jumped from 8.91 to 16.75, which is one outstanding offer rather than a shift in the middle of the class.

Seat Matrix

GITAM does not publish a branch-wise, category-wise seat matrix, and no counselling authority publishes one for it either, because its seats are not allotted through JoSAA, CSAB or the Andhra Pradesh state pool. The nearest thing to a real intake figure is the sanctioned strength GITAM filed with NIRF, and the direction it has been moving in matters as much as the totals.

Sanctioned intake2023-242022-232021-22
UG, four-year programmes4,9305,0105,010

UG, five-year programmes390390390
PG, two-year programmes1,2501,403Not filed
PG, three-year programmes525251

Those totals cover the whole deemed university, so they cannot be read as Visakhapatnam seats. Two of the discipline filings can be, and they are the ones a law or pharmacy applicant needs. Law is taught only at Visakhapatnam, and its filing sets the five-year LL.B. intake at 120, unchanged since 2019-20, and a 20-seat one-year LL.M. first entered against 2023-24. Pharmacy files under a single institution code, so its intake is not a Visakhapatnam-only figure either, at 160 B.Pharm seats since 2021-22, raised from 150, and M.Pharm intake growing from 51 to 66.

The three-year undergraduate collapse is the number to plan around. Sanctioned intake in that band fell from 2,035 to 1,190 in two years while the four-year band barely moved, so the B.Sc. and B.Com side of this campus is being deliberately narrowed while engineering holds its size.

Rankings

Three Ministry of Education tables give GITAM a numbered place in the 2025 edition. It is 88th among all universities on a score of 48.79, 33rd in pharmacy on 56.66 and 38th in law on 53.26.

Four more tables name GITAM without ranking it, and that difference is where most GITAM ranking claims go wrong. NIRF prints its leading hundred in rank order and then lists everyone below alphabetically inside a rank band, and GITAM's name turns up in exactly such a band on the overall, engineering, management and innovation band pages for that edition. Engineering is by a wide margin GITAM's largest teaching operation and a band rather than a rank is all the Ministry gives it, so any single engineering rank quoted for this campus has come from a private list rather than from NIRF.

The parameter scores behind the three placings show three different institutions inside one university.

Research is where the pharmacy school separates itself: its 51.68 sits far above the 28.31 the university entry records on the same parameter, and it is the one part of GITAM that a research-minded applicant can point to in a government table. Perception runs the other way for it, at 19.29, the lowest score anywhere in the three columns, so the pharmacy school is better regarded by the metrics than by its peers. The law entry is nearly the mirror image, strong on outreach at 63.17 and thin on research at 28.37, which is the profile of a young teaching-led law school rather than a research faculty.

Departments

GITAM groups its Rushikonda teaching into schools, and the roll call is the fastest way to see what this campus does and does not teach. The site carries the GITAM School of Computer Science and Engineering, the School of Core Engineering, the School of Business, the School of Science, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Architecture, the School of Pharmacy and the School of Law, and the law school is the one that exists nowhere else in the university.

GIMSR sits at the same address and is best understood as a separate institution sharing a campus. It houses GITAM Medical College, the GITAM Institute of Nursing, the School of Allied and Healthcare Professions and the School of Physiotherapy, around an 850 bed hospital, and its programmes admit on medical routes rather than through GAT. Two named disciplines belong to other campuses and are worth ruling out early: Education, taught through the B.A. B.Ed. and B.Sc. B.Ed. at Hyderabad, and Public Policy, also Hyderabad. Choosing GITAM for either of those means choosing Rudraram, not Rushikonda.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The Visakhapatnam campus is the largest of the four at 240 acres, and GITAM describes its neighbours as an industry ecosystem comprising AMTZ, the Indian Navy and the Port Trust. Its own campus page places it between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, and the application portal adds the detail most applicants actually ask about, that the site is within walking distance of the beach and carries a cricket ground alongside football, basketball and indoor courts.

Three campus-scale numbers appear on that portal with no campus attached to them, so treat them as university-wide rather than as Rushikonda figures: a 3,00,000 sq ft central library, 40 or more specialised research laboratories and 200 or more active student clubs. What the ranking filing does record, and it is campus-blind for the same reason, is what GITAM spent building that stock. Capital spending in 2023-24 ran to Rs 42,57,03,772 on new laboratory equipment and Rs 9,54,65,701 on the library, the laboratory line having roughly doubled in two years.

Accessibility is answered in the filing as a proportion rather than a promise. The lift-or-ramp question and the specially-designed-toilet question both come back as yes, more than 80% of the buildings rather than a flat yes, while walking aids, wheelchairs and transport between buildings are answered yes with no proportion attached at all. A student who needs step-free access should ask which Rushikonda blocks fall in the remaining fraction, because the filing covers four campuses in three states and cannot answer that. Wind turbines are the unusual entry in the same filing's sustainability answers: GITAM ticks both solar panels and wind as renewable sources installed on campus, alongside a ban on single-use plastic items and a water set-up that combines rooftop and surface-runoff harvesting with percolation pits, recharge wells and storage tanks.

Hostel

Residence at Visakhapatnam is run tightly, and the rules are published rather than discovered after arrival. Rooms in the women's halls are air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned with 2 to 4 occupants, and the application portal describes separate boys and girls blocks with dedicated wardens and 24/7 resident caretakers on each floor. Dining is included rather than bought meal by meal, on a fixed timetable: breakfast 7.30 AM to 9.00 AM, lunch 12.00 PM to 2.00 PM, evening snacks 4.30 PM to 6.00 PM and dinner 7.30 PM to 9.00 PM, with all meals to be eaten in the dining halls and outside food prohibited there and in rooms.

The curfew is the rule most worth knowing before you accept a bed. Students must be back by 9:00 PM on weekdays and 9:30 PM at weekends, attendance is recorded between 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM each night by register or biometric, and once it is taken nobody may leave the premises. Quiet hours run from 10 PM to 7 AM and phone calls are to be taken between 6 AM and 10 PM. A place is also renewed rather than held: continuation depends on behaviour and academic performance, and a student who fails or is detained in any semester may not be eligible to stay.

Two financial terms on that page deserve a second reading. Dues unpaid for one month can require a student to vacate, and the caution deposit is described in a single sentence as non-refundable and as something that will be adjusted or refunded on vacating, which are not the same thing. We could not find a published hostel tariff for the Visakhapatnam campus on any GITAM page, so the room and dining charge has to come from the residence office in writing. What is documented is the discount rather than the price: a merit scholarship of 100% or 75% carries the same percentage off hostel fees including food and non-AC accommodation, and the lower slabs carry 20%.

Faculty

GITAM entered 2,071 faculty members in its 2025 university submission, and the two discipline filings show how thinly that spreads once you look at a specific school: 59 in pharmacy and 33 in law. Doctoral supervision is heavily part-time, with 975 part-time against 663 full-time scholars, and 116 full-time and 28 part-time doctorates awarded in 2023-24.

Research money grew fast and unevenly. Between 2021-22 and 2023-24 the university's sponsored-research receipts went from Rs 2,88,96,185 across 41 projects to Rs 13,09,66,165 across 57 projects drawn from 10 funding agencies, while consultancy stayed small at 18 projects worth Rs 2,92,02,600. The discipline returns show where that money did and did not reach. Pharmacy recorded 8 sponsored projects worth Rs 62,30,071 in 2023-24 after two consecutive years with none at all, which fits the 51.68 research score its ranking entry carries. Law recorded 3 projects worth Rs 11,25,000 in the same year, also from a base of zero, and has awarded no doctorate at all in the three years it reports despite carrying 24 full-time doctoral candidates. A prospective research student in law should ask what that gap means for supervision.

Notable Alumni

We could not find a university-wide alumni roll on GITAM's site, but its computer science school names former students with a graduating year against most of them, which makes that list checkable. The B.Tech computer science page names Krishna Devareyalu Lavu, graduating year 2004, a Member of Parliament for the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, and Vaibhav Sisinty, graduating year 2015, chief executive of Growth School in Bengaluru. The same page lists Niranjan Reddy Renati of the 2002 batch as vice president and country head at the Olam Group in Thailand, Sindhura Polasana Palli, also 2002, as a senior marketing director at Keurig Dr Pepper, and Amaranath Dabbara from as far back as 1990 as a group software engineering manager at Qualtrics in Seattle. Mallavarapu Surya Teja appears on it as an IAS officer with no year attached.

That is one school's list rather than the university's, so it under-represents law, pharmacy, management and the sciences entirely. Names circulated elsewhere as GITAM alumni are not printed here unless GITAM itself puts a degree and a year beside them, and the public figures the university profiles on its admissions pages as speakers and changemakers are not alumni at all.

News & Articles

The changes that matter for a 2026 applicant are procedural rather than ceremonial. The scholarship policy for AY 2026-27 puts an AI-based interview in front of every merit slab, with a faculty personal interview on top for 60% and above, so a scholarship offer is now confirmed or revised after a conversation rather than on a score alone. The same policy sets July 31, 2026 as the deadline for uploading parents' income-tax documents for the need-based upgrade, and freezes the slab cutoffs at their AY 2025 levels.

Two accreditation clocks sit further out but inside the length of a degree starting now. The NAAC cycle runs to 27-02-2030, and every NBA-accredited programme on this campus expires together on 30 June 2028, which falls inside the four years of a B.Tech starting in 2026. The admission calendar itself has already turned over: GAT ran from January to May 2026, so the dates that matter for the next intake will be posted on the application portal rather than carried over from that cycle.

College Compare

The comparison that decides most GITAM applications is a local one, because the strongest alternative sits in the same city. In the NIRF 2025 university table, Andhra University, also in Visakhapatnam, is 23rd on 59.20 against GITAM's 88th on 48.79, and it is a state institution with state-subsidised tuition on its aided seats. What GITAM offers against that is a private admission process with no state counselling queue, an openly published fee sheet and a documented scholarship ladder.

Change the subject and the gap closes to almost nothing. In pharmacy the two Visakhapatnam schools finish two places apart, AU College of Pharmaceutical Sciences 31st on 58.19 and GITAM 33rd on 56.66, which is a far better result for GITAM than its university placing suggests. In law it sits at 38th on 53.26, between Army Institute of Law at 37th on 53.27 and Amity University Haryana at 39th on 53.22, a three-way finish tight enough that the order could reverse in a single edition. Anyone quoting a single GITAM rank has chosen a table; the honest answer depends entirely on the subject.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

The accreditation GITAM leads with is live and it is the top grade. Its ranking filing records a valid NAAC accreditation on a CGPA of 3.54, running from 28-02-2023 to 27-02-2030, which the university describes on its application portal as the NAAC A++ grade. That window is long enough to cover a degree started now from admission to graduation, including the five-year law and architecture programmes, so nobody joining this year will study under a lapsed institutional grade.

Programme accreditation is a separate register and a much shorter list. The National Board of Accreditation accredits individual programmes rather than institutions, and six GITAM Visakhapatnam programmes currently hold it, all of them running to the middle of 2028.

Set that list against the fee table and one thing stands out. Four B.Tech streams at Rushikonda are priced identically at Rs 2,04,200 a semester, plain computer science alongside its artificial intelligence, cyber security and data science variants, and only the plain one is named on the register. Civil, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, robotics and the VLSI stream are not on it at all. That does not touch the validity of the degree, which GITAM confers under its own deemed-university status, but it does mean a branch chosen for the words in its title may not carry the same external assessment as the cheaper branch beside it.

Scholarships

GITAM's scholarship scheme is unusually detailed and unusually conditional, and the conditions are where the money actually goes. Merit awards run in slabs of 100%, 75%, 60%, 40%, 25% and 15% of tuition, decided on entrance-test performance, and the accepted tests are the same broad list that governs the cutoff question above.

Three rules narrow it sharply. The first is a quota: admissions through scholarships are capped at 15% of sanctioned intake in computer science and its specialisations, 30% for the MBA and 20% in the rest of the programmes, with the 100%, 75% and 60% slabs sitting outside that cap. The second is an interview, added for the current cycle: candidates offered 60%, 75% or 100% face an AI-based interview followed by a mandatory faculty personal interview at the allotted campus, and a score below 6.0 drops them one slab with a floor of 40%. The third is renewal, and it is the one families underestimate. The award covers the first year only; keeping it needs a CGPA of 8.0 or higher, and a CGPA between 7.5 and 7.99 drops the student one slab, with only students on the bottom 15% slab protected from the drop. Since tuition also rises 5% to 8% a year, a slipped grade point raises the bill twice over.

A need-based top-up sits on top of the merit award and is worth applying for early, because it is the only part with a hard date. A student already holding 15% to 75% can be upgraded one step, 75% to 100%, 60% to 75%, 40% to 60%, 25% to 40% and 15% to 25%, on uploading both parents' income-tax return acknowledgement to the counselling portal before July 31, 2026. Hostel charges follow the tuition award rather than being priced separately: 100% and 75% tuition scholars get the same percentage off hostel fees including food and non-AC accommodation, and the 60%, 40%, 25% and 15% slabs get 20%.

Four smaller schemes run alongside, and they stack only up to a ceiling. Children of GITAM employees receive 60% where the gross monthly salary is below Rs 50,000, 40% between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1,00,000 and 20% above that; a flat 10% loyalty award covers returning alumni, their children, siblings, children of retired employees and spouses of employees; and sports awards run the full slab range with accommodation help at 50% or 100% of the hostel fee for exceptional cases. Whatever the combination, the total of merit, need-based, employee-children, loyalty and sports scholarships may not exceed 75% unless a single award reaches 100% on its own.

Student Reviews

We publish no star rating for GITAM, because one number stretched over this particular institution would hide the very thing an applicant came to find out. A single score would have to cover four campuses in three states under one name, a Visakhapatnam fee range running from Rs 32,500 a semester for a B.Sc. to Rs 2,87,900 for the MBA, and two undergraduate bands whose filed placements were 2,397 of 3,646 in the four-year cohort and 330 of 1,583 in the three-year one. A B.Tech student at Rushikonda and a B.Sc. student on the same campus are not reviewing the same experience, and neither is reviewing Bengaluru.

Two checks beat a score here. Ask the school you are applying to, not the university, for its own placement sheet for the last three classes, since the business school publishes one and the others do not. Then ask the residence office for the hostel tariff and the curfew rules in writing, because those decide how the four years actually feel and neither is on a public page.
