Sri Sarada College For Women(autonomous)

Salem, Tamil Nadu Est. 1961 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#81

Of the 624 undergraduates who finished on time at Sri Sarada College for Women in 2023-24, 58 took a job and 302 went on to further study, according to the college's own NIRF 2025 data return. That balance, far more of the class into a master's degree than into employment, is the most useful single fact about this Salem campus, and it is not the picture the phrase "placement record" usually suggests. The college sits at Fairlands in Salem, Tamil Nadu, and is ranked 81st in the College category of the Ministry of Education's NIRF 2025 rankings.

Overview

Sri Sarada College was started in 1961 by Mrs. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami under the presidentship of Srimath Swami Chidbhavananda of Sri Ramakrishna Tapovanam, Tirupparaithurai, and is run by the Sri Sarada College Educational Trust through the Yatiswaris of Sri Sarada Samiti. She appears elsewhere in the college's own material under a second name, which is worth knowing before the records look like two people: the founders' page records that she was initiated into sanyasam by Swami Chidbhavananda after her husband's death and blessed with the name Saradapriya, and that the college grew out of a school she had begun with two children in her own house. The 2026-27 prospectus records the college being elevated to first grade level in 1962 and given autonomous status in 1988-89, and the 2023-24 quality report dates the conferment of autonomy to 05/10/1988. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone on 06.01.1963 and Rajiv Gandhi opened the Sister Nivedita Auditorium on 01.05.1987, per the college history page; that auditorium is still where admission counselling is held.

Its status decides most of what follows. This is a women's college, so every student on the rolls is a woman. It is grants-in-aid, which is why the bill a first-year student pays is measured in hundreds of rupees and not in lakhs. And it has been affiliated to Periyar University since 1-1-1998, having previously come under the University of Madras, so the degree is a Periyar degree while syllabi, question papers and continuous internal assessment are the college's own under autonomy, as the prospectus sets out.

Before going further, make sure you have the right Sri Sarada, because the name is carried by several separate institutions. Closest of all is Sri Sarada Nicketan College of Arts and Science for Women, which is also in Salem district and also affiliated to Periyar University, but is privately unaided rather than government aided and much younger. A separate autonomous women's college of the same name and the same Tapovanam lineage operates at Maharaja Nagar in Tirunelveli, affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and graded A by NAAC. Sri Sarada College of Education is a third institution, also at Fairlands in Salem, but it is a teacher education college under the Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University. The arts and science college described here is the government aided one at Fairlands, Salem 636016, whose own website carries its admission notices.

Courses & Fees

The teaching is arts, science and commerce only. The 2023-24 quality report counts 30 programmes running that year across 12 undergraduate, 9 postgraduate and 9 doctoral titles, with 627 individual courses inside them. M.Sc. Data Science and M.Com. are self-financing; every other programme is aided.

LevelSubjects
B.A.History, Economics, English
B.Sc.Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Home Science, Computer Science
B.Com.Commerce
M.A. / M.Sc. (aided)Tamil, History, Economics, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
Self-financing PGM.Sc. Data Science, M.Com.

Now the number people actually search for. On the aided undergraduate side there is no tuition line at all: the published UG fee schedule leaves that row blank and totals only the admission, administrative, university and special heads.

ProgrammeTotal on the published schedule
B.A. all branches₹1,592
B.Com.₹1,592
B.Sc. Mathematics₹1,742
B.Sc. Statistics₹1,792
B.Sc. Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Home Science₹1,842
B.Sc. Computer Science₹1,892

One ambiguity in that sheet is worth resolving at the counter rather than on a website. Its heading calls the amounts tuition and special fees for the whole year collected in two semesters, while the column heading immediately underneath calls them payable at the beginning of the year and for the first semester, and the schedule never says what, if anything, falls due at the start of the second semester. Ask the office for the second-semester demand before you budget.

Postgraduate study does carry tuition, and it is still small. The aided PG schedule charges ₹500 a year for the M.A. programmes and ₹750 for M.Sc. Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, which takes the first-year total to ₹2,177 for M.A. History, Economics, English or Tamil, ₹2,427 for M.Sc. Mathematics, ₹2,727 for M.Sc. Physics and ₹2,827 for M.Sc. Chemistry. That tuition head is waived altogether for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and differently abled candidates, in a footnote printed under the same table. The self-financing programmes are priced per semester instead, at ₹8,000 for M.Sc. Data Science and ₹6,000 for M.Com., payable in three instalments. Doctoral candidates pay two ways: for the general category the Ph.D. schedule shows ₹20,500 to the university and ₹6,000 to the college in the first year, then ₹6,600 and ₹5,400 in continuation years.

One feature is worth planning around, because it runs across the whole staff room rather than one or two departments. Every teaching department offers an add-on ladder taken alongside the degree, a certificate course in the first year, a diploma in the second and an advanced diploma in the third: Sericulture in Zoology, Gardening and Landscaping in Botany, Vedic Mathematics in Mathematics, Renewable Energy Management and Audit in Physics, Tourism Management in History, Export Management in Economics and Food Service Management in Home Science, among the rest on the advanced diploma list.

Admissions

Entry to the undergraduate programmes is by single window counselling on the campus, not by an entrance test. The prospectus is explicit that selection for a major turns only on the marks scored under Part III at the plus two level, with Part II counted for the English major, and that eligibility is subject-gated: B.Sc. Mathematics needs Mathematics at school, Botany and Zoology take Biology, Botany or Zoology with Chemistry, Home Science splits its rule by stream, and B.Com. needs Commerce or Business Studies with Accountancy, or the vocational Accountancy stream.

Seats are then allotted under the Government of Tamil Nadu reservation rule the prospectus reproduces: 31% open competition, 30% Backward Classes including 3.5% for Muslims, 20% Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities, 18% Scheduled Caste including 3% for Arunthathiyar, and 1% Scheduled Tribes. Beyond that, 6 undergraduate and 3 postgraduate seats go to children of ex-servicemen, 3% of UG and 2% of PG seats to the sports quota, and 5% to differently abled candidates. The online application fee is ₹50, made up of ₹48 for the application and ₹2 for registration, and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates pay only the ₹2.

Counselling dates are set after the plus two results and pushed out two ways: the prospectus circular tells applicants to watch the website and says the dates go by SMS or WhatsApp to the mobile number given on the application, so register a number you actually monitor. The 2026-27 notices on the homepage put the last date to apply for undergraduate programmes at 29.05.2026, counselling on 01.06.2026 and 02.06.2026 in the Sister Nivedita Auditorium, postgraduate applications closing 30.06.2026 and the last date for admission at both levels 30.09.2026. Applications for the self-financing master's programmes are handled offline at the college office rather than through the portal.

Master's entry runs off degree marks rather than a test. Once Periyar University declares the undergraduate results the college opens an online link, and its admission procedure states that candidates are selected on the marks scored in their undergraduate programmes, that the selection list is prepared through software, and that no capitation fee is accepted for any programme. Doctoral entry is the one route that does test you: the norms of Periyar University are followed and the criteria include merit, an entrance test and interview marks.

The attendance rule is enforced with a price attached, so read it before accepting a seat. The prospectus requires 75% attendance to sit the semester examinations, sets a condonation payment of Rs. 1000 for the 65% to 74% band, allows the 50% to 64% band to carry papers as arrears into the next semester on the same payment, and makes anything below 50% a redo of the semester.

Cutoff

The college publishes a cut-off, but not the kind a NEET or JEE aspirant would recognise. What it announces before each counselling round is the band of plus two Part III marks being called in on that day, the notices counting down from a top of 400. The homepage counselling notices carry three cycles of them.

Admission yearFirst counselling bandSecond counselling band
2024-25400 to 300Below 300, down to 200
2025-26400 to 300299 to 200
2026-27400 to 260Below 260

The last row is the one a borderline candidate should read twice. The first round for 2026-27 opened at 260 rather than the 300 of the two cycles before it, and the special category candidates, sports, ex-servicemen's children, differently abled and NCC, are called in that same first round, per the homepage notice. These bands are deliberately not branch-wise: the 2024-25 circular prints the phrase "for all Majors" against both rounds, and no closing mark per subject is published afterwards, so there is no branch-wise cut-off table to check. At master's level it works differently while a cycle is live: the admission procedure says the selection list and waiting list carry the quota-wise cut-off marks and go up on the website and the notice board. Those lists are not archived, so the moment to capture a department's closing mark is while its list is posted. For 2026-27 the position after counselling is stated plainly on the homepage: seats were still available in English, History, Economics, Botany, Home Science, Statistics and Physics, and were being filled first come, first served. Any figure circulating elsewhere as this college's subject-wise cut-off is somebody's estimate.

Placements

The placement cell arranges aptitude tests, group discussions and mock interviews and forwards student CVs to employers, and its placement record names the recruiters year by year. The recent pattern is a mix of health-services business process work, school teaching posts and a thin thread of IT, concentrated on Salem and its neighbouring towns, with single hires reaching as far as Tirupur and Thiruvallur.

Recruiter, 2023-24Students placed
Indian Health care BPO, Salem30
Vee Healthtek Private Ltd, Salem16
Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Salem11
SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram10
Senthil Public School, Salem6
Sri Vijay Vidhyalaya, Dharmapuri5
TCS, Chennai1
Rasi Constructions, Tirupur1
PVR Enterprises, Thiruvallur1

That mix is a change, not a constant, and the same record shows when it turned. In the middle of the last decade the big numbers on this campus were IT services offers: 36 students to CCI Computers in 2014-2015, 26 to TCS Chennai in 2015-2016, then 49 to Capgemini's Global Talent Track operation in Salem and 18 to Infosys BPO in Bangalore in 2016-2017. The last year of that size was 2017-2018, when Digicol took 56 and ICICI Bank 34; in every year since, the biggest single employer intake is 30, and it belongs to a hospital or a health-services BPO rather than to an IT firm. A candidate who has heard from a senior that this college feeds the IT companies is describing a period that has closed.

Set the recruiter lists against the outcome data the college files with the Ministry of Education, because the two together are the honest answer to "what are placements like here". Its NIRF 2026 return reports that of 563 undergraduates finishing in 2024-25, 89 were placed at a median salary of ₹1,80,276 while 272 went to higher studies; at postgraduate level 189 finished, 23 were placed at a median of ₹2,16,000 and 42 continued studying. The year before, on the NIRF 2025 return, the median for the 58 undergraduates placed was ₹3,00,000 while 302 moved on to study. The quality report counts the whole outgoing cohort the same way for 2023-24: 81 placed against 344 progressing to higher education, and 4 students qualifying in a state or national level examination. No highest package and no employer-wise salary appear anywhere in the college's published material.

Seat Matrix

Sanctioned intake is published in total, not by subject. Approved undergraduate intake, on the NIRF 2026 return, was 704 for 2022-23, rose to 722 for 2023-24 and then fell to 640 for 2024-25. The postgraduate figure has not moved off 306 in the last two of those years. Admissions have been running below sanction: 652 were admitted against 704 first-year undergraduate seats in 2022-23, and 203 against 306 postgraduate seats in 2023-24. Total strength on the same return is 1,743 undergraduates and 364 postgraduates, every one of them a woman, and all but one of them from within Tamil Nadu.

For the reserved-category share of those seats the quality report is the better source: 552 seats were earmarked for reserved categories in 2023-24, 444 of them were filled, and 862 students were admitted in total that year across levels. The college does not publish a programme-by-programme seat matrix, so the number of seats in, say, B.Sc. Statistics is not a public figure. The college office is where to ask before counselling day.

Rankings

The rank this college holds today is the end of a climb back, and the trajectory is the part worth reading. It stood 100th on a score of 50.35 in the NIRF 2021 college table, then dropped out of the numbered ranks and spent three editions in the unranked 101-150 band, in 2022, 2023 and 2024, before returning at 81 on 56.47 in NIRF 2025. It is the only Salem institution among the hundred numbered ranks, though one other from the city, Government Arts College, sits in that year's unranked 101-150 band. The college's own homepage leads with the rank.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources68.15
Research and Professional Practice35.81
Graduation Outcomes69.42
Outreach and Inclusivity53.07
Perception11.85
Overall56.47

Compare that card with the 2021 one and the source of the recovery is unmistakable. Research and professional practice went from 14.07 in 2021 to 35.81 in 2025 and outreach and inclusivity from 48.11 to 53.07, while perception slipped from 13.42 to 11.85 and teaching resources rose only from 63.38 to 68.15. The college climbed on research output and on the reach of its own filings, not on reputation: on the perception parameter it scores lower in 2025 than it did in 2021, which is the profile of a campus better known inside Salem district than outside it.

Departments

Not every department here awards a degree, and the undergraduate syllabus page prints that distinction as two separate tables: one for the majors, one for the language departments that teach the compulsory Part I and Part II papers to the whole college rather than to a cohort of their own.

Where the department appearsDepartments
Undergraduate majorsHistory, Economics, English, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Home Science, Computer Science, Commerce
Part I language departmentsTamil, Hindi, Sanskrit
Part II language departmentEnglish
Postgraduate departmentsTamil, History, Economics, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Commerce

English is the only name that appears twice in that split, and that is what explains the staffing figures further down. The master's row is the shorter one, and it does not sit neatly on top of the undergraduate row. Tamil is the one subject a student can read for a master's on this campus but not for a bachelor's, while Statistics, Botany, Zoology and Home Science run the opposite way: a major at undergraduate level with nothing above it here, so a student who wants to stay in those subjects has to move to another college after three years. In its own event notices the college styles the departments carrying doctoral work as PG and Research Departments, with Physics, Mathematics, English, and Commerce and Economics appearing under that label on the homepage events panel.

Sanctioned strength is published department by department, which tells a candidate more about how a subject is resourced than any prospectus paragraph does. The regular staff page puts total teaching strength at 122 and breaks the sanctioned posts down as follows.

Economics10
Physics10

English is the biggest staff room on the campus because it teaches Part II to every student on the rolls on top of its own major, and Tamil is second for the same reason at Part I. Hindi and Sanskrit sit at the far end of that table with a single sanctioned post each and no degree of their own to teach. Computer Science, which carries the B.Sc. major and the self-financing M.Sc. Data Science between them, is sanctioned four posts. Read the table as the aided staff room only: the self-financing teachers appear on a separate list, which covers Computer Science and Commerce and no other department.

Autonomy pushes syllabus power down to this level, so the department a student joins is also the body that decides what she studies. Each one runs a Board of Studies chaired by its own head, seating the rest of the department, two subject experts from outside the college nominated by the Academic Council, a nominee of the Vice-Chancellor, a postgraduate alumna and one student representative each from the undergraduate and postgraduate sides; that board frames the syllabus, revises it, introduces new courses and fixes the pattern of continuous assessment, per the Board of Studies page. Above it the Academic Council seats every head of department and, from the postgraduate departments only, a second senior member as well, so a department with a master's programme speaks twice in the college's academic decisions and a department without one speaks once.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The library is the strongest single facility claim on this campus and it keeps unusual hours, opening at 6.30 a.m. and closing at 8.00 p.m. on working days, with a shorter 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. window on Saturday and Sunday. It houses about 81,355 books, 65 journals and periodicals, 6000+ e-journals and 7,64,300 e-books, runs a book bank for students who cannot buy texts, and operates an earn while you learn scheme; each postgraduate department also keeps a departmental library of its own.

Laboratory provision is described department by department rather than in the abstract. The laboratory page lists an ultrasonic interferometer, a laser unit, a polarograph, a UV spectrophotometer and a microwave kit in the postgraduate Physics and Chemistry labs, and various microscopes, a digital colorimeter and a camera lucida in Botany and Zoology. The quality report puts a number on the machines too: 371 computers held for academic purposes, spread across a plant of 77 classrooms and seminar halls. The campus also runs a press, a tailoring unit and a bakery under the training and development centre listed on its community services page.

Know the daily routine before committing to it, because the prospectus prescribes the day from the first bell to the dress code. The prospectus calls the first bell at 9:15 a.m., makes assembly compulsory for students and teachers alike, opens the working day at 9.30 with prayer, meditation, a thought for the day and a general quiz, and follows it with ten minutes of mass physical drill. Weekly Articulation and Idea Fixation classes, examined at the end of the year on a prescribed book, and annual discourses on the Ramayana or the Mahabharata are not recent additions: the founders' page lists both among Swami Chidbhavananda's own ideas for the college. The dress rule permits half saree or saree and nothing else, with the college uniform compulsory on the first Monday of every month.

Hostel

The hostel is meant for students whose homes lie outside city limits, and the college describes it as supervised by female superintendents under round the clock CCTV surveillance, with a vegetarian mess run on hygienic steam cooking. The listed features run to a reading room, an internet browsing centre, an entertainment centre, a stationery store, a gymnasium, solar water heating and a medical facility and health centre, and residents may use the library after college hours in the evening. Two house rules matter more than any of that when a family is deciding: hostellers attend prayer every morning, and only a parent may take a student out, with parents permitted to visit on holidays.

A place is applied for separately from the college seat, not granted with it. The prospectus requires an application to the Principal on the prescribed form, available in the college office on payment of Rs. 50, at the time of admission, so accommodation has to be settled in the same week as the seat rather than after it.

What it costs to live there is published too, but only as a scan: the hostel prospectus is a photographed Tamil booklet with no readable text layer, which is why the figures are close to unfindable online and why no page on the college site restates them. Its fee table sets out an entry payment built from an admission fee, a refundable deposit, a maintenance charge and a hostel development fee, then a mess charge billed per student per month with the monthly bill posted on the notice board and a late-payment surcharge if it is not cleared in time. Open that document, or ask the college office for the current amounts in writing, rather than trusting a listing site's version of them.

Neither the college site nor its NIRF 2026 return says how many rooms the hostel holds or how many students live in it, so how tight a place is in a given year is a question for the office rather than something a candidate can plan around. The kitchen does get accounted for in one place: the 2023-24 quality report records hostel kitchen waste being mixed with humified garden litter and vermicomposted on campus, with the humification yard run by the Department of Botany and the vermicomposting monitored by the Department of Zoology.

Faculty

Teaching is close to fully staffed and heavily doctoral. The quality report puts 126 teachers in place against 131 sanctioned posts in 2023-24, 104 of them holding a Ph.D., and dates its own head count to 29/09/2023, when 122 full-time teachers were carrying 2,364 students. The faculty tables in the NIRF 2026 return list that staff room name by name, with age, qualification, joining date and, where it applies, leaving date, and every teacher on it is a woman.

Research output for that year, in the same quality report, was 60 papers by faculty and 31 by doctoral scholars, plus 67 book chapters by faculty and 11 by scholars. The Principal is Dr. (Tmt.) S. S. Gomathi, in post from 01.05.2025 according to the Principal's page; her predecessor Dr. R. Uma Rani is still carried on the ranking filing, marked as having left. The governing body seats a UGC nominee, a state government nominee drawn from the Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education and a Periyar University nominee alongside the trust's representatives, as the governance page sets out.

News & Articles

There is no news page. Notices run on the homepage, and the college does something with them that a reader has to know before acting on a date: a closed admission cycle is not taken down. The panel headed ADMISSION 2026-27 and the panel headed ADMISSION 2025-26 sit in the same rotating banner, each keeping its own counselling dates, cut off bands and helpline numbers, which is the only reason the cut off bands earlier on this page can be sourced at all. It also means a stale panel looks exactly like the live one, so read the heading before you trust the date under it.

Two lines run above that banner instead of rotating with it. One is the NIRF 2025 rank. The other is the college's Institution's Innovation Council being awarded a 4-star rating for the year 2023-24, on the same homepage ticker, and that council turns out to be the busiest single source of dated notices on the site.

Below the banner an Upcoming Events panel carries departmental notices with dates attached, a good part of them written in Tamil, ranging from public viva voce examinations for research scholars to student seminars run by the Physics, Mathematics and English departments and start-up workshops from the innovation council. The same page also publishes a News Letters strip linking one PDF each for IQAC, the Research Cell, NSS, NCC, YRC, the College Union and every teaching department, which is where a department's own year gets written up rather than in any central bulletin. The recognition and awards page is the exception to all that dating: it lists wins such as Chemistry students taking first prize at a Periyar University National Science Day exhibition for a wound healing bandage model, and Statistics students placing second in a quiz run by the National Statistics Office, but attaches no year to any of them, so read it as a standing list and not as a feed.

official-report

The college has been through four NAAC cycles and its quality report prints all of them with their validity dates: Four Star in 2002, B with 2.94 in 2008, A with 3.10 in 2014, and B++ with 2.87 in the fourth cycle, valid from 01/03/2021 to 28/02/2026. Read that sequence as it stands, because the grade went down as well as up. The fourth-cycle validity has now run out and no fifth-cycle result is published anywhere on the college website, so a candidate who needs a current accreditation letter, for a scholarship form or a foreign application, should ask the office for the present status rather than rely on the B++ line.

Two central science grants sit alongside the accreditation, and both are tied to named departments rather than to the college as a whole. The same quality report records the Department of Science and Technology sanctioning ₹94,00,000 under FIST on 12/05/2018 for five years, covering Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Mathematics, and the Department of Biotechnology sanctioning ₹63,00,000 under the Star College scheme on 07/08/2020 for three years, covering Botany, Zoology and Mathematics.

Aid

Scholarships

The most consequential fact here is not a scheme name. On the college's NIRF 2026 return, all 1,743 undergraduates on the rolls are shown receiving full tuition fee reimbursement from state and central government funds, with none left paying unreimbursed; at postgraduate level the split is 242 reimbursed by government, 98 by the institution and 19 receiving none. Its quality report puts numbers on the same thing from the disbursement end. Government scholarships and freeships reached 1,143 students in 2023-24; a further 393 were carried by the institution itself or by non-government bodies.

The scholarship page lists what is actually processed through the college office: the National Scholarship Scheme, the Government of India post-matric scholarship for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students, Gandhi Memorial and loan scholarships and prizes for SC and ST students, awards sanctioned by the District Adi Dravidar Officer, the state scholarship for MBC, DNC and BC students, and the Pudhumai Pen scholarship. For the state government award to BC, MBC, SC and ST students the notice on that page is specific: the form is picked up from the college office, not filed with the college online, and it must be handed back with photocopies of the class 10 and class 12 mark sheets, a class 12 attendance certificate, community certificate, Aadhaar, bank passbook and income certificate.

Voices

Student Reviews

There is no Expertie rating on this page and no borrowed star score either, because none of the review sites carrying one can show that whoever left it ever sat in a classroom at Fairlands.

What does exist is the college marking its own paper, which is worth reading as exactly that. Its stakeholder feedback analysis for 2023-24 reports that 45.56% of undergraduates rated the depth of course content excellent and 33.46% very good, that 32.76% called the relevance of the course to real life excellent against 4.44% who called it average, and that on the overall rating 33.52% chose the top mark and 23.70% the one below it. The instrument is the college's own, the respondents are its own students, and the analysis is written by its own quality cell, so treat the numbers as the institution's self-assessment rather than as an independent verdict. The same report also polls subject experts and employers, which is where a reader will find teaching staff rating the curriculum rather than students rating the teaching.
