Sacred Heart College(autonomous)thirupattur-635 601

Tirupathur, Tamil Nadu Est. 1951 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#80

Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur scored 56.43 in the Ministry of Education's 2024 college ranking and 56.54 in the 2025 one. Its place in the table still slid from 47th to 80th. A college whose own score edged up while its rank fell by more than thirty places is better read through its filings than through its position, and this Salesian college in Tirupattur district, Tamil Nadu files plenty of them: ten ranking submissions going back to 2017, an annual quality report to NAAC, an admission prospectus, a programme-wise strength sheet and three years of placement returns.

Overview

The Salesians of Don Bosco of the Chennai Province opened the college on 25 June 1951 and still manage it as a Christian minority institution. UGC recognition under section 2(f) came on 2 July 1956 and 12B status on 23 August 1994, autonomy was granted on 24 September 1987, and Thiruvalluvar University has awarded the degrees since 2003; the campus covers 23.9034 acres with 79,723.43 square metres built up, and the college is registered under AISHE code C-36411, on its own institutional profile.

The college is simultaneously grant-in-aid and self-financing, and it runs a shift system, so the same subject can exist twice on one campus under two different funding rules. Its accreditation has never gone backwards either: four stars in 1999, an A held across the 2006 and 2013 cycles, then an A+ in the fourth cycle in 2019, as its own accreditation register records, worth a CGPA of 3.31 on the institutional profile. The fifth cycle brought an A++ at a CGPA of 3.53 out of 4, declared on the masthead of its admission portal.

Which of those you meet depends on which page you land on, and that is worth knowing before you quote the college back to itself. The accreditation register and the institutional profile both still stop at the 2019 grade, whose validity ran out on 7 February 2024 by the college's own AICTE filing, while the admission portal has moved on to the fifth cycle, the hostel login page brands the college 47th in India under NIRF 2025 when 47th was in fact its 2024 placing, and an older regulations page still says 95th under the 2017 ranking.

It draws almost all of its students from inside Tamil Nadu. The 2024-25 roll carried 3,768 undergraduates and 881 postgraduates, 3,558 and 825 of them from within the state, in the data the college submitted to the ranking framework for 2026.

Courses & Fees

The shift system is not a scheduling detail here. It is the college's cost structure. Shift I runs 08:30 AM to 01:15 PM, Shift II runs 01:25 PM to 05:45 PM, and the AICTE programmes run 08:30 AM to 04:30 PM, beside the programme list on the admission portal. Nine programmes carry an aided section: B.A. Economics, B.Com., B.Sc. Mathematics, B.Sc. Physics, B.Sc. Chemistry and B.Sc. Computer Science at undergraduate level, and M.A. Economics, M.Sc. Mathematics and M.S.W. at postgraduate level. Everything else, including B.C.A., B.B.A., B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, B.Com. Banking and Finance, the six one-year postgraduate diplomas and the MBA and MCA, is self-financing.

No current fee table is published for either stream, and there is a hole on the college's own site where one used to sit: its older regulations page still carries a Fee Structure link under Admission, the workbook that link points to has been taken down, and the only copy still readable anywhere is the one the Internet Archive kept, which covers the aided courses alone. The admission portal never states a figure either: the application fee and the college fee are both collected through payment screens that open only against an application number, and the prospectus adds that no capitation fee or donation is accepted and that anyone promising a seat for money should be reported to the Principal or the Secretary, in its prospectus. The only current rupee figures it does print for a student to pay are for examination services: Rs 250 per paper for a photocopy of an answer script and Rs 500 per paper for revaluation, in the window it set for the November 2025 semester examinations, on its examination page.

Two in five undergraduates here pay their own way. The 2026 ranking submission splits the 3,768-strong undergraduate roll into 1,771 whose tuition is reimbursed in full by state and central government, 214 by the college itself, 273 by private bodies and 1,510 covered by nobody, in that submission. The fee accounts are not purely internal either: the tuition, university, special and General Non-Salary accounts are audited to government nomenclature and reviewed by the Joint Directorate of Collegiate Education, Vellore Region, while the government pays aided faculty salaries and self-financing staff are paid from collected fees, in the annual quality report for 2022-23.

Admissions

The 2026-2027 prospectus sets out a route with no examination anywhere in it: register, validate a mobile number by OTP, fill the form after the results are published, upload documents, pay online. Forms are not sold at the office counter, and the help desks on campus exist for applicants who need assistance with the online form rather than as an offline alternative, in that prospectus.

The subject rules do more filtering than any mark. A candidate without mathematics in Plus Two is not eligible for Computer Science, Computer Application, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Data Science or Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Pure science candidates who took zoology and botany are eligible only for Biochemistry, Microbiology or Zoology, and both B.Sc. Biochemistry and B.Sc. Zoology additionally require chemistry. B.Com., B.B.A. and Banking and Finance require commerce and accountancy. Economics, History, Psychology, Tamil and English literature are open to every group. The upper age limit for undergraduate entry is 21 as on 1 July 2026, relaxed by five years for differently abled candidates and by three years for women and for SC, SCA, ST, BC, BCM, MBC and DNC candidates, in the same prospectus.

The paperwork that catches applicants out falls due after admission rather than before it. Candidates from other state boards or other universities have to produce a migration certificate from their previous institution and an eligibility certificate from Thiruvalluvar University at Serkkadu, Vellore, both after admission rather than before it. A laptop is compulsory for all programmes, stated alongside the campus rules on 75 per cent attendance and English as the campus language, and Catholic applicants are additionally asked for a letter from their parish priest.

Cutoff

Nothing this college prints records where a merit list stopped. The portal returns a selection outcome to one applicant at a time, through an application status lookup and a certificate upload step for selected candidates, so no mark, rank or category table follows the round into public view, as the portal's own navigation shows. That holds for the MBA and MCA as well, where what the college publishes is a qualification bar rather than a mark: a bachelor's degree carrying mathematics or statistics, either at Plus Two or as a main or allied subject in the degree, a B.E. or B.Tech with no such condition attached, and a lateral entry into the MCA for B.C.A. and B.Sc. Computer Science graduates, in its admission guidelines.

Intake data is the only public measure of pressure, and it says the two halves of the college behave differently. On the undergraduate side, 1,344 of 1,369 sanctioned first-year places were filled in 2022-23 and 1,266 of 1,350 in 2021-22. On the postgraduate side, 462 of 570 were filled in 2023-24 and 445 of 619 in 2022-23, in the 2026 ranking submission. An undergraduate seat here is close to fully subscribed and a postgraduate one is not. Those totals are college-wide, so they say nothing about which subject is hardest to get into, only that the undergraduate side has been filling almost everything it is allowed to fill while the postgraduate side has not come close in either reported year.

Reservation here is countable rather than assumed. The quality report earmarked 519 seats for reserved categories under central and state government rules in 2022-23 and records 416 of them filled, against 1,935 students admitted that year, in the annual quality report. The rules the college publishes for itself are the state's: its admission guidelines require the Tamil Nadu communal reservation policy to be followed in selection, reserve three per cent of undergraduate seats for sportspersons under a 1994 government order, and oblige it to send the university a statement of the admissions made under the reservation rules once the process closes, on its regulations page. A percentage quoted against any of that on a listing site has no published document behind it, and the only office that knows where last year's list for a given programme stopped is the college office itself.

Placements

Undergraduate and postgraduate outcomes here point in opposite directions, and the filings are unambiguous about it.

Undergraduate yearGraduated in stipulated timePlacedMedian salaryTo higher studies
2022-23742256Rs 180,000447
2023-24629177Rs 192,000346
2024-25670213Rs 202,000368

Master's cohorts in the same submission behave nothing like the undergraduate ones.

Postgraduate yearGraduated in stipulated timePlacedMedian salaryTo higher studies
2022-23329249Rs 216,00056
2023-24339223Rs 120,00024
2024-25396248Rs 240,00041

More undergraduates leave for further study than for a job in every one of those three years, and the gap is wide: 368 went on to study against 213 placed in 2024-25, in that submission. At master's level the ratio flips, 248 taking a job against 41 who kept studying. A B.Sc. or B.A. taken here is, on the college's own numbers, most often a step towards a master's degree, and the master's is where the campus offer arrives.

Read the recruiter names rather than either median, because the college's two filings for the same year do not agree. Against the Rs 120,000 postgraduate median in the ranking submission, the placement return the college posts beside it on the same ranking-reports page, headed India Rankings 2025, records a median of Rs 216,000 and an average of Rs 228,564 for that same 2023-24 postgraduate batch, in that return.

The employers themselves are consistent, and they are local. The 2023-24 undergraduate sheet records offers from a minimum of Rs 96,000 to a maximum of Rs 420,000, with TVS Motor at Hosur taking 8, Sagility at Electronic City 6 in its largest entry, and Foxconn at Sriperumbudur, Tata Electronics at Hosur, Global Calcium at Hosur and Pegatron at Mahendra City, Chengalpattu 5 each, alongside single offers from TCS Chennai, Royal Enfield Tirupattur, Bajaj Finance and Shriram Finance. The postgraduate sheet for the same year reaches a maximum of Rs 540,000 and adds Accenture, Amazon Development Centre, Bahwan CyberTek and AVASOFT, in the placement document filed with the 2025 submission. Manufacturing around Hosur and Sriperumbudur and business process work in Bengaluru, not software engineering in Chennai, is what this campus converts a degree into at scale.

The college's own quality report will not reconcile with the ranking tables at all. For 2022-23 it records 339 outgoing students placed and 454 progressing to higher education, along with 1,826 students who used its coaching and career counselling, in the 2022-23 annual quality report, while the ranking submission counts the undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts of the same year separately and reports a higher figure in each column.

Seat Matrix

No outside authority allots a seat here. Responsibility for admission sits with the Principal, the Additional Principal, four vice principals covering administration and academics in both shifts, the senior-most staff member and a staff representative, who make up the college's own admission committee, whose membership it publishes, so there is no counselling round here to produce the category-wise matrix a student might expect. What is published is the sanctioned intake: 1,323 undergraduate and 570 postgraduate places for 2024-25, in the 2026 ranking submission. The two AICTE programmes carry an approved intake of their own, MBA, started in 2011, and MCA, started in 1998, each approved for 60 seats, in the college's AICTE mandatory disclosure.

Below that total, the closest thing to a per-programme seat count is the first-year roll of any subject that runs in a single section.

B.C.A. is left off that list deliberately: the portal advertises a second section of it, so a single first-year figure would understate what the subject actually holds. B.A. History is in the table on its 2024-2025 first-year roll, but a school leaver should not read it as an offer without asking, because the current prospectus contradicts itself about the subject: History is absent from the list of programmes open for admission while the eligibility clause on the same page still names it as open to every Plus Two group, in that prospectus.

Research is the parameter that moves, and it does not move the rank with it. The research and professional practice score went from 64.04 in the 2022 table to 79.93 in 2023, lifting the college from 82nd to 42nd, then rose again to 87.70 in 2024 while the rank slipped to 47th, and when it fell back to 75.40 in 2025 the rank dropped to 80th even though teaching, learning and resources climbed nearly five points to 61.69. Perception is the standing drag: it is the lowest of this college's five parameters in all four years, moving between 11.32 and 15.75 while research swung by more than twenty points.

The research volume behind that parameter is genuine. The 2022-23 quality report counts 312 papers in UGC-CARE listed journals, 64 books and chapters, 750 Scopus citations for the year, a Scopus h-index of 11, 35 doctoral candidates registered and Rs 3.1250 lakh of institutional seed money paid to teachers, in the annual quality report.

Departments

Twenty-one departments teach degree programmes, and their sizes are wildly uneven, which matters when the question is how much individual attention a subject can give.

Commerce carries 495 students on 12 teachers and Commerce CA carries 222 on 4, while English carries 259 on 21 and Tamil 228 on 18, on the same listing. The language departments are staffed for the service courses every student takes, so their ratios flatter them; commerce and management are where a class is genuinely large. Communicative English, Life Education and Placement teach across programmes without owning a degree, and Physical Education, Library and Office are counted separately again.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The teaching plant runs to 73 classrooms with ICT facilities, 43 laboratories, 24 seminar halls, 97 classrooms and seminar halls counted as ICT-enabled, 531 computer systems on a campus network with Wi-Fi rated up to 250 Mbps, eight servers, and a Cybrary of 30 computers set aside inside the library for research scholars. Infrastructure spending excluding salaries came to Rs 476.42532 lakh in 2022-23, in the annual quality report.

Buildings here carry names, not numbers, and two of them repeat names from the college's own Roll of Honour: the John Med block and the Murphy hostel share the names of the first and second principals, listed on the principal's page. They sit alongside the Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee and Bicentenary blocks, the Communicative English block, the Abraham Parampara Exam Hall, Carreno Hall, Kamarajar Arangam, the Don Bosco Indoor Stadium, a gym, volleyball and basketball courts, a cafeteria, an ATM and a solar installation, on the infrastructure gallery. The accessibility answers in the ranking submission are banded rather than absolute: lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets in more than 80 per cent of buildings, which leaves a remainder the submission does not identify, in that submission.

Hostel

Four hostels publish a capacity and a resident director, and three of the four are for men.

HostelOpenedCapacityFor
Rinaldi1957270Men
Guezou2006160Men
Murphy1979126Men
Amalagam1997120PG women

The prospectus is blunt that undergraduate hostel seats for boys and girls are limited while postgraduate hostel facilities are available for both, in its hostel note. The hostel login portal additionally lists St. Joseph, Mazzarello Home Girls Hostel, Savio Sports and Rinaldi FOSS as separate houses, so the four blocks with a published capacity are not the whole residential estate, and an applicant who needs a bed should confirm availability for her own programme and year before accepting a place.

Faculty

The college reported 200 full-time teachers against 200 sanctioned posts in 2022-23, of whom 123 hold a doctorate, and recorded a student to full-time teacher ratio of 4,734 students to 200 teachers as on 28 April 2023. Their combined teaching experience in this institution alone came to 1,806 years, in the annual quality report. Long tenure is the pattern: the faculty table filed with the 2026 ranking submission lists members in continuous service since 1987, 1990 and 1991, in that submission.

The Platinum Jubilee appeal on the principal's page is signed by Rev. Dr. Praveen Peter SDB as Principal, though the Roll of Honour printed directly beneath it still ends at Rev. Dr. Maria Anthonyraj, in office since 2015, on that page. Every one of the fifteen names on that roll, from Rev. Fr. John Med in 1951, carries a priest's title.

Notable Alumni

The college publishes no list of distinguished alumni. Its Illustrious Alumni page carries the words "Under Construction" where the names would be, on the college website, and no alternative roll appears in its ranking submissions or its quality report. Any list of famous Sacred Heart College alumni circulating elsewhere should be checked against the Kerala institution of the same name before it is believed.

News & Articles

The live story on campus is the Platinum Jubilee. Its opening was inaugurated on 8 September 2025, an All India Science and Technology Fest followed on 13 September 2025, an All India Kabaddi Tournament for men and women ran from 25 to 28 December 2025, the Rector Major of the Salesian Society, Rev. Fr. Attard Fabio, is listed to visit on 17 February, and the jubilee closes with a grand conclusion and alumni reunion in December 2026, on the principal's page. The same appeal states that the college is building a corpus fund for student scholarships, breakfast and midday meal programmes and research.

Routine notices run through two pages that disagree about how current they are. The examination notice board still leads with a revaluation window and a special supplementary examination for the classes that went out in 2023, on that board, while the examination page beside it carries the photocopy and revaluation dates for the November 2025 semester examinations, on that page. Read the second before trusting the first.

College Compare

Sacred Heart College is the only institution in Tirupattur district anywhere in the 2025 national college table, so "the best college in Tirupattur" is a comparison with an empty field. Its real peers are elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, clustered within two points of it.

Fewer than half a point separates the three colleges around it, so that ordering will not survive a single cycle. The choice a Tirupattur family is actually weighing is not between these campuses at all; it is between a college on the doorstep and a hostel place in Kumbakonam, Sivakasi or Coimbatore for a rank a few places higher.

Office hours are quoted two ways by the college itself, at 08:30 AM to 05:30 PM in that disclosure and 09:00 AM to 04:30 PM in the admission portal's footer, so call before travelling. The campus and its affiliating university sit in different districts: the college gives its address as Tirupattur District, while Thiruvalluvar University is at Serkkadu near Vellore, which is where an out-of-state applicant's eligibility certificate has to be obtained after admission, per the prospectus.

Verified

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

The grade rides the masthead of the college's website. The document proving it is on none of its pages. Every cycle listed on the college's accreditation register carries a certificate link, and each one opens a file in a document folder the server no longer holds; the annual reports listed on its reports page break the same way. The assessor's half of the record still stands. NAAC publishes its register of institutions holding valid accreditation as on 14-08-2025 from its accreditation status page, the college is carried in it as a Tirupattur college affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University, and that entry agrees with the fifth-cycle A++ at a CGPA of 3.53 the admission portal prints, awarded in 2024 under the Revised Accreditation Framework.

Autonomy is the older status, and the same register dates it block by block, from 1987-1988 to 1991-1992 at the start through to a block covering 2020-2021 to 2024-2025, with nothing published after that. Autonomy is what lets a college write its own syllabus and run its own examinations while Thiruvalluvar University awards the degree, so a candidate joining in 2026 has a fair question for the office, which is under whose scheme her final-year papers will be set. The extension order that would answer her is not among the documents it has put online.

Below the institution there is nothing to grade. No programme here appears in the National Board of Accreditation's published lists of accredited programmes, which follows from what the college teaches: NBA's lists are filled with engineering, pharmacy and management programmes, and this roll is arts, commerce and science. The MBA and the MCA are the two degrees that answer to a national technical regulator at all, through the AICTE approval recorded in the college's mandatory disclosure; the rest are approved by the university and the state. So the only accreditation a student here can point to is the institutional one, and beyond those two degrees there is no second certificate underneath it to produce.

Aid

Scholarships

Which stream admits you decides how much of the fee the state carries. Tamil Nadu waives tuition for every undergraduate in an aided college, and for undergraduates and postgraduates alike in a government college, in the Higher Education Department's policy note for 2026-2027. At Sacred Heart that reaches the nine sections carrying aid and stops there, so a self-financing seat in the same subject, on the same campus, in the other shift, sits outside it.

The ranking submission's own columns show where the shortfall lands, which is on postgraduates. They leave 356 of the 881 on that roll with no reimbursement at all; of the rest, 326 are carried by state and central schemes, 103 by the college and 96 by private bodies, in the 2026 submission. The same table records 865 of those postgraduates, and 3,695 of the 3,768 undergraduates, as socially challenged under the combined SC, ST and OBC heading, so eligibility on paper is far wider than the reimbursement columns beside it.

Two state schemes are named in the prospectus, and eligibility for both is settled by the school you left rather than by the marks you left with. Pudhumai Penn pays women and Tamil Puthalvan pays men, each Rs 1,000 a month while they are in higher education, and each asks for classes VI to XII in a government school or, in Tamil medium, in a government-aided school, in the policy note. Take that eligibility from the state's wording rather than the college's, because the prospectus lists the aided-school route for the women's scheme and not for the men's.

The college's part of a state claim is clerical, and it is where claims die. Four documents are demanded before a claim moves: an attendance certificate from wherever you studied last, a Tahsildar's online income certificate for your parents dated 2026, an online community certificate, and a nationalised-bank savings account seeded to your Aadhaar. The warning attached to them is the one that costs students a year, since the name, date of birth and gender printed on the Aadhaar card have to match the class 10 and class 12 mark sheets, and a mismatch must be corrected in Aadhaar first, in the prospectus. There is no standing scholarship page anywhere on the college website: those instructions sit inside the prospectus, and what was actually handed out appears in the events feed.

Money from outside government arrives as organised charity with a named donor rather than as a scheme with a form, and the Department of Extension Education and Services runs all of it.

The categories in the largest of those say who this money is for. The IVDP beneficiaries were 11 orphans, 133 semi-orphans, 2 physically challenged students and 20 ultra-poor students from other states, in the college's report of it, and the Tiruvannamalai grant was split half to college students and half to schoolchildren from families its report describes as Gypsy, in that report. None of it is applied for online. It is handed over at a programme, which makes the department, not a portal, the way in.

The one award the college funds from its own budget with a published rulebook is research money rather than fee relief. The Sacred Heart Fellowship has run since 2017-18 for final-year postgraduates who mean to carry on into research, screened by a scrutiny committee the Principal appoints, then by anonymous expert reviewers, then at an oral presentation, and opened to M.Phil candidates in 2018; its published register runs to 57 awards sanctioned between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 each, on the fellowship page. The latest entries on that register are dated 2022-2023, so ask whether it is still being awarded before counting on it.

Voices

Student Reviews

The only student feedback published about this campus is the college's own, and it questions people on their way out rather than students currently in class. The exit survey for 2022-23 drew 1,715 undergraduate and postgraduate respondents and was analysed in-house, in the survey report. Reaching that file takes one correction: the annual quality report links it under a www address the college's certificate does not cover, and it opens only with the www removed.

Its readings are uniformly high and uniformly self-reported. In the summary of findings, 96 per cent called the curriculum highly relevant to their degree and to the jobs they were chasing, 87 per cent judged their teachers competent, 97 per cent called the evaluation fair, 88 per cent said they were leaving with their next step decided and 90 per cent recorded themselves satisfied overall, in that report. The questionnaire, the sample, the analysis and the write-up all belong to the institution being rated, and nothing in it is broken out by department or by shift, so none of those figures separate the aided morning college from the self-financing afternoon one.

What students asked for is the part worth mining, because a request marks a gap. The leavers wanted extra bus services, undergraduate hostel places and more restrooms, and their suggestions to the college were more certificate and skill courses, more advanced technical ones, more placement opportunities, one compulsory NPTEL course, stronger career guidance and awareness programmes on drug addiction and on health and food habits, in the same report. The hostel request matches what the college publishes elsewhere, since three of the four residences with a stated capacity are for men and the prospectus itself calls undergraduate hostel places limited.

A star average borrowed from a listing site would not survive its own footnotes here. None of them records whether the reviewer sat in the aided or the self-financing shift, or in which of the twenty-one departments, and on a campus where those two facts set the fee and the size of the class, one figure averaged across the lot describes nobody in particular.
