West Bengal University Of Animal And Fishery Sciences, Kolkata
Counting five years of its own graduates, this university sent 123 veterinary graduates into government service and 29 into the private sector, while its dairy technology faculty sent 10 into government service and 75 into private industry. One registrar, one convocation, two opposite job markets. The choice between them is made at application time, because the four undergraduate programmes here open on three different doors, split across two teaching campuses, and are priced on separate sheets.
Overview
Every degree awarded here is an animal, dairy or fish degree. The university started its journey with a legacy of Century old Bengal Veterinary College on 2nd January 1995, and its own account calls it the second University of its kind in the country, created vide West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences Act 1995 to impart education, training and to conduct research in veterinary and animal sciences, dairy sciences and fishery sciences. The veterinary teaching it inherited had been a faculty of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya until then, and both universities still teach at Mohanpur in Nadia district. They are separate institutions running separate admissions.
Where you will actually study is the part the postal address hides. The self-study report sets it out plainly: the headquarters are at Belgachia in Kolkata, the undergraduate programme of the veterinary faculty has been shifted to the renovated campus at Mohanpur, Dist. Nadia while its master's and doctoral teaching stayed at the headquarters, and the faculty of DT is at Mohanpur, Dist. Nadia, about 50 Km away from Kolkata and the faculty of FS is at Chakgaria, Kolkata, about 15 Km away from the headquarters.

The stated mandate is narrow and worth reading before choosing a programme. The university lists it as producing better quality of Veterinary doctors, dairy technologists and fishery specialists in the State, creating self-employment through livestock, dairy and fish farming, and running need-based research on those three sectors. There is no crop science or agronomy anywhere in the structure.
Courses & Fees
Four undergraduate programmes, a two-year diploma among them, and a postgraduate layer across all three faculties.
| Programme | Faculty | Campus | Length | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.V.Sc. and A.H. | Veterinary and Animal Sciences | Mohanpur, Nadia | Five and a half years | 100 |
| B.F.Sc. (Hons.) | Fishery Sciences | Chakgaria, Kolkata | Four years | 50 |
| B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) | Dairy Technology | Mohanpur, Nadia | Four years | 50 |
| Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy | Veterinary and Animal Sciences | Mohanpur, Nadia | Two years | 35 |
| M.V.Sc., M.F.Sc., M.Tech. | All three | Campus of the discipline | Two years | Set by department |
| Ph.D. | All three | Campus of the discipline | Three years | Set by department |
The fee sheets are published programme by programme, and the veterinary degree is the dearest of the undergraduate three. Its sheet totals Rs 13,770 for a day scholar and Rs 20,870 for a hosteller, with tuition of Rs 3,600 among the heads marked recurring. The sheet shared by fishery science and dairy technology totals Rs 9,860 and Rs 15,160 on tuition of Rs 1,800. Both sheets carry a university uniform charge of Rs 3,000, which the university notes may vary at the time of admission. Neither total is the cost of the degree: each sheet mixes one-time heads such as admission and registration with heads marked recurring, and the recurring ones fall again every semester.
| Undergraduate fee sheet, at admission | Day scholar | Hosteller |
|---|---|---|
| B.V.Sc. and A.H. | Rs 13,770 | Rs 20,870 |
| B.F.Sc. and B.Tech. (D.T.) | Rs 9,860 | Rs 15,160 |
| D.V.P., first semester | Rs 12,650 | Rs 15,650 |
| D.V.P., later semesters | Rs 5,000 | Rs 8,000 |
The diploma is billed unlike the degrees: a flat Rs 5,000 semester fee covering tuition, library and examination, on top of a Rs 5,000 admission fee and a refundable caution money of Rs 2,500, with hostel seat rent of Rs 3,000 a semester where a bed is taken.
At master's and doctoral level the university charges its own graduates and outsiders on two entirely different columns, and that gap is the largest number on any of these sheets. A master's candidate from within the university pays Rs 3,850 as a day scholar at admission and Rs 2,150 a semester after it, while one from outside pays Rs 22,150 and then Rs 15,000. The doctoral sheet runs the same way, Rs 5,750 then Rs 3,650 for an internal day scholar against Rs 30,150 then Rs 20,800 for an external one. Anyone weighing a B.V.Sc. here against one elsewhere should price the master's degree at the same time, because staying on costs a small fraction of arriving.
Admissions
There is no single WBUAFS entrance test. Each programme runs on its own rule, and getting the rule wrong costs a year. Work from the dated notices rather than the course listing on the university's main site, which is out of step with them on intake as well as on entrance: it still prints 44 Seats for fishery science, the same for dairy technology and 30 Seats for the diploma, against 50, 50 and 35 in the current notices.
B.V.Sc. and A.H. turns on the national medical entrance. The current notice requires that the candidate must qualify and obtain a rank in the NEET-UG-2026 conducted by NTA and be a domicile of West Bengal, not less than 17 years and not more than 25 years as on 31st December of that year of admission, holding 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English taken together for unreserved category and 47.5 % in case of reserved category candidates. The ranking that follows is not a fresh calculation: the Provisional Merit List will be made as per NEET-UG-2026 Rank. The window on it has since moved: applications for both this programme and the affiliated Mogra college are extended up to 15.09.2026, with the provisional merit list now due on 18.09.2026.
B.F.Sc. (Hons.) does the opposite. Its notice for the same session states that the selection of students for admission will be done as per merit list without any Entrance Examination and that the list is built from the percentage of total marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English at Higher Secondary, with a floor of 50 % marks (40 % in case of candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC & PwD). Check that against the university's own course listing, which still names a NEET-UG rank among the eligibility conditions for fishery science. The dated admission notice is the document the admission committee works from, and it asks for no entrance examination at all. The Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy runs on the same Higher Secondary merit route, at 45 % marks (40 % in case of candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC, PwD), with vocational stream and open schooling candidates ineligible. Its entry on the course listing carries the identical defect: inside one block it demands a NEET-UG rank and then states that selection is made without any entrance examination. Both notices are unambiguous, and neither programme has one.
B.Tech. in Dairy Technology is the only programme filled from outside the university. Seats go to Candidates those are only allotted for West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences in B.Tech. (D.T.) course through e-Counselling of WBJEE-2026 conducted by West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board, and admission is completed in person over three reporting rounds at Belgachia, with Rs. 13,660/- (Inclusive Rs. 1500/- as cost of online application fee) for General/EWS/OBC (Hosteller) candidates & Rs. 13,360/- (Inclusive Rs. 1200/- as cost of online application fee) for SC, ST, PwD (Hosteller) candidates to be deposited by cash through Bank-challan at Belgachia branch only of Union Bank of India. That is what changes hands on the reporting day, and it is not the same figure as the Rs 15,160 hosteller total on the published fee sheet, which is the full admission-time schedule. Seats left after the board's third round were to come back to the university, which said it would fill them itself among eligible candidates with WBJEE-2026 rank. That plan has since been withdrawn. The university has put its own round in abeyance until further notification to follow a revised WBJEEB notification, and tells anyone who already applied to it apply afresh to participate in the Common Online Decentralised Counselling - 2026 conducted by WBJEEB. The vacant dairy seats are therefore filled through the board, not through this office, and a WBJEE rank is required either way.
Postgraduate entry is internal and examined. Master's candidates need minimum of 6.2 Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) for general category & 6.0 for SC & ST categories in 10 point scale in the qualifying degree, then sit a written test and a departmental interview board. Doctoral candidates need 6.75 Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) in the respective Masters Degree disciplines and face the same two stages. No weighting between the written test and the interview is published, so treat both as gates rather than as a scored blend.
One more door exists, and a Bengal candidate meets it on the same portal. The university also runs admission to JIS College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mogra (Private Veterinary College affiliated by WBUAFS), where 80 B.V.Sc. seats split into 40 management quota and the same number under state quota, and the state quota carries the identical NEET-UG and domicile conditions. Fees there are set by that college, and the notice sends candidates to its own prospectus for them.
Cutoff
The admission notice archive that carries every WBUAFS merit list holds nothing saying where a category finally closed. What the university does publish, programme by programme, is the full ranked merit list with every candidate's score on it, and those lists carry enough to calibrate against.
The veterinary final list for the 2025-2026 session held 495 candidates against the 85 seats the university filled itself that year, the seat matrix for that session having carved only the 15 VCI places out of the hundred. It opens at All India Rank 41754 in NEET-UG 2025, which is where a WBUAFS applicant should set expectations rather than at a medical-college rank. The eighty-fifth name on it sits at rank 67792, an OBC-B entrant, with the name above at 67775 from OBC-A; neither is general category. Read that as a calibration point and not as a cutoff: seats are allotted category by category, candidates withdraw between rounds, and the university runs further counselling for whatever is left.
The category sub-ranks on that same list move the picture in both directions. The strongest scheduled caste candidate came in at 164438, well past the eighty-fifth position, while the strongest OBC-B and OBC-A candidates were at 47597 and 50051, comfortably ahead of it. Anyone in a reserved category who reads only the general column will misjudge the chance, and not always in the pessimistic direction. The fishery and diploma programmes rank on Higher Secondary marks instead, and their lists are published in the same detail. The B.F.Sc. provisional list for that session ran to 161 names, opened at 97.00 per cent and closed at 54.25 per cent, and the 43 seats the university filled itself that year reach down to 86.25 per cent. The diploma list is the one that says most: it carried 28 names against the 37 seats then on offer, opening at 89.00 per cent and ending at 61.25 per cent, so fewer people applied than the course could take. Dairy technology has no comparable list here at all, because its rank is the WBJEE rank and the state board owns it.
Placements
The undergraduate half of the ranking return covers only the five-year veterinary degree, and it moves in two directions at once: the number placed and the median salary both climbed, the share placed did not.
| B.V.Sc. and A.H. outcome | 2021-22 | 2022-23 | 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduated in minimum stipulated time | 115 | 103 | 145 |
| Placed | 103 | 86 | 123 |
| Median salary of those placed | Rs 5,19,996 | Rs 6,96,545 | Rs 7,41,521 |
| Selected for higher studies | 11 | 17 | 22 |
Work the first two rows against each other and the placement rate runs at about ninety per cent in 2021-22, falls in 2022-23 and comes back to roughly eighty-five per cent in 2023-24. The master's rows in the same document are paid about seventy per cent more in each of the last two years: 90 of 112 postgraduates placed in 2023-24 at a median of Rs 12,45,875, 79 of 93 in 2022-23 at Rs 11,58,962 and 74 of 98 in 2021-22 at Rs 12,00,000. The four-year fishery and dairy programmes are not entered in that return at all, so nothing about their salaries can be read off it.
Where those jobs are is answered elsewhere, and it is the more useful answer. The self-study report breaks five years of graduates down by destination and by faculty.
| Destination over five years | Veterinary and Animal Sciences | Dairy Technology | Fishery Sciences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government service, including ARS scientists and assistant professors | 123 | 10 | 103 |
| Public sector undertakings, banks and insurance | 09 | 19 | 31 |
| Private sector | 29 | 75 | 32 |
| Self employment in farming or business | 09 | 08 | 11 |
| Further education | 41 | 11 | 07 |
| Others, including research projects | 11 | 01 | 05 |
| Total | 222 | 124 | 189 |
Read down the columns and the three faculties barely resemble each other. Just over half of the veterinary and fishery graduates left for the state and central payroll, while dairy technology went the other way, at 75 of 124 into private industry. If a private-sector job soon after graduating is the requirement, the dairy degree is the one this record supports, and it is the one filled through WBJEE rather than NEET.
Seat Matrix
Undergraduate seats are published programme by programme, with a nominee block carved out of each before state reservation applies.
| Undergraduate seats | Total | Nominee quota | GTA | University seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.V.Sc. and A.H. | 100 | 15 to VCI | 1 | 84 |
| B.F.Sc. (Hons.) | 50 | 10 to ICAR | 1 | 39 |
| B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) | 50 | 10 to ICAR | 1 | 39 |
| Diploma in Veterinary Pharmacy | 35 | None | None | 35 |
Within the veterinary degree's university seats the notice sets 45+2* unreserved, 17+1* scheduled caste, 05 scheduled tribe, 05+1* other backward classes and 8 economically weaker section, the starred places going to candidates with disabilities on a horizontal basis. Fishery science and dairy technology share an identical split of their own block, at 22+01* unreserved and 07+01* scheduled caste. The diploma has no nominee block at all, and its seats break into 19+1* unreserved and 7+1* scheduled caste.
The dairy programme is the one that did not fill in this year's board rounds. After the third round of WBJEE e-counselling the university put the vacant seat matrix at 12, close to a third of the block it controls, split 07 unreserved, 01+01* scheduled caste, 01 scheduled tribe and 02 economically weaker section. Those twelve are now routed back through the board rather than through the university's own round. A candidate with a WBJEE rank who missed allotment therefore still has a real second window at the dairy faculty, which is not true of the veterinary degree, but the application goes to WBJEEB.
Postgraduate seats are not fixed numbers at all. Master's intake in a department is calculated in the ratio of 1:2 (Teacher eligible to guide a student : Number of Students) and also considering the availability of infrastructural facilities in a department and to a maximum of 6 nos., with one seat kept for ICAR in each department; doctoral intake runs at 1:1 (Teacher eligible to guide a student : Number of Students) and to a maximum of 3 in a Department. The number of places in the discipline you want depends on how many guides that department currently has, and it moves year to year.
Rankings
WBUAFS appears in one national ranking table. Its only entry is IR-G-U-0591 in agriculture and allied sectors, rank 39, total 46.97. No other 2025 category carries it, so an all-purpose league position for this university does not exist.
| NIRF 2025 agriculture parameter | Score |
|---|---|
| Graduation Outcomes | 75.83 |
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 68.78 |
| Perception | 34.67 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 21.23 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 13.32 |
The spread across that card is unusually wide. Graduation outcomes at 75.83 agree with the placement rows above rather than contradicting them, while outreach and inclusivity at 13.32 is the weakest number on the card by a distance. The return feeding that parameter records an undergraduate body of 787 students, 766 of them from within the state and 142 of them women, alongside the access facilities noted further down. A domicile condition on every seat the university fills itself makes regional spread structurally hard to earn here.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The library's lineage runs further back than the university itself, and it is spread across every campus. The central library at Belgachia traces to the Bengal Veterinary College Library, Belgachia of 1893 and was separated from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in 1995; there are now four units, at Belgachia, at the veterinary and dairy campuses in Mohanpur and at Chakgaria. Between them they hold 25,810 printed books and 235 e-books with access to 13,000+ journals through ONOS, running on Koha with barcoded stock, open 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM on working days and lending 3 books in case of U.G and 4 in case of P.G. for a period of 30 (Thirty) days.
Residence is campus-specific, and Mohanpur has by far the most beds.
| Hostel | Campus | Rooms | Beds |
|---|---|---|---|
| APC Roy Hall, boys | Mohanpur | 84 | 252 |
| Kadambini Girls' Hostel | Mohanpur | 64 | 193 |
| Sir S N Bose Hall, boys | Mohanpur | 90 | 147 |
| DVP Hostel, boys | Mohanpur | 16 | 50 |
| Prof. D B Mukherjee Boys' Hostel | Belgachia | 50 | 100 |
| Veterinary Girls' Hostel | Belgachia | 27 | 50 |
| Girls' Hostel | Chakgaria | 27 | 84 |
| UG Boys' Hostel | Chakgaria | 24 | 68 |
| PG Boys' Hostel | Chakgaria | 20 | 35 |
Frazer Hostel at Belgachia is Currently Under Renovation with no occupancy published, every hall runs under a named provost drawn from the teaching staff, and the university states that Hostel room allotment is subject to availability with priority possible by distance from home. Confirm the bed on the day of physical verification instead of counting on one.
The teaching estate outside the classrooms is what a livestock degree needs. Mohanpur carries the university farm, whose production units the self-study report sizes at 12,000 Sq.ft each for large ruminants, pigs and goats or sheep, 10,000 Sq.ft for poultry and the same again for ornamental fish farming, 1,500 Sq.ft for the hatchery and 6 Acres under fodder. Clinical practice is handled by the Veterinary Clinical Complex, created under Veterinary Council of India (VCI) rules and regulations'2008 and functioning since July'2012, whose ambulatory van of TVCC reaches to different nearby veterinary hospital at least twice in a week with batches of senior students aboard. Extension runs through three Krishi Vigyan Kendras, at Ramsai (Jalpaiguri), Ashokenagar (North 24 Parganas) and Digha (Murshidabad).
On disability access the university marks its own paper harshly, and the marking is worth reading. Its 2025 filing puts ramps and lifts in the less than 40% of the buildings bracket, repeats that bracket for accessible toilets, and then answers the wheelchair, walking-aid and inter-building transport question with a flat no. The self-study report says the opposite on the third question, recording that wheelchair facilities are available; the ranking return is the later filing, and the disagreement between two of the university's own documents is worth putting to the Dean of Students' Welfare directly. Because two of those three answers are building by building rather than campus-wide, the block and the hall you would actually be assigned are what to ask about before accepting an offer.
Hostel
Faculty
The teaching headcount is published in the ranking return rather than as a total anywhere on the university site, at 124 faculty members entered across all three faculties. Names, departments, email addresses and phone numbers are listed individually in the university's faculty members directory, which is the practical way to check who currently teaches the discipline you are applying to.
Research supervision is concentrated at doctoral level, with 88 full-time doctoral students on the rolls and 43 doctorates awarded in 2023-24, against the same figure the year before and 40 in 2021-22. The externally funded work multiplied across that same window: 4 projects and Rs 1,85,89,674 in 2021-22 became 35 projects drawing Rs 5,68,41,258 from 10 agencies by 2023-24. Consultancy is the thin line by comparison, at 2 projects for 1 client organisation worth Rs 8,56,000 in the same year. Those totals are spread across veterinary, dairy and fishery departments in proportions nobody publishes, so the question to put to a prospective guide is how many of them are live in that department right now.

Admission business is done at Belgachia even where the teaching is not. Physical reporting for the dairy programme is held at the Office of the Controller of Examinations, WBUAFS, Vivek Bhawan, 68, K. B. Sarani, Belgachia, Kolkata, with the Nearest location- Belgachia Metro Station. Teaching then moves out of the city for two of the three faculties, to Mohanpur in Nadia district.
Verified
Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Two national bodies stand behind what is taught here, and NAAC is not one of them.
The Veterinary Council of India carries the veterinary faculty on its list of recognised veterinary colleges as Faculty of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Mohanpur, Nadia, with 100 seats approved by the central government. That recognition is what makes the qualification registrable as a veterinary degree, and the number on the Council's list matches the number in the university's own seat matrix.
ICAR's accreditation board covers all three faculties together. Its published list grades the university B from 01/04/2021 to 31/03/2026, naming the Faculty of Veterinary Animal Science at Mohanpur, the Faculty of Fishery Sciences Chakgaria Campus and the Faculty of Dairy Technology Mohanpur, with accredited programmes listed down to individual M.V.Sc., M.F.Sc. and doctoral disciplines. That published window has already closed, on 31 March 2026, and no later list shows a renewal, so a candidate who needs live accreditation for a fellowship or a foreign application should ask the university for the renewal order rather than assume one exists.
A search of the university's own website for NAAC returns nothing at all. ICAR and VCI are the normal route for a state veterinary and fishery university, and NAAC is a separate register the university makes no reference to, so no letter grade for WBUAFS is shown here.
Aid
Scholarships
The university's own scholarship page currently reads "Under construction", so no scheme, amount or eligibility rule is published there for an applicant to plan against.
What has been published, in the self-study report, is a five-year table of what the internal awards were worth, and the undergraduate line is thin next to the fee sheet. In 2020-21, counted as on 31 December 2020 and so a part year, the University Scholarship reached 84 undergraduates in the veterinary faculty for 1.05 lakh rupees and 35 in dairy technology for 1.18 lakh. Earlier full years in the same table pay more on fewer students, at 2.41 lakh for 71 veterinary undergraduates in 2016-17. The doctoral rows are the substantial ones, peaking in 2018-19 at 38.31 lakh shared by 63 veterinary students and 20.67 lakh by 34 in fishery sciences.
The reimbursement columns of the ranking return say the rest. Of the 787 undergraduates on the rolls, 312 are entered as socially challenged; the three columns that would record a full tuition-fee waiver for them, from the state and central government, from institutional funds and from private bodies, are each filled with a zero. Plan on paying the sheet in full, and count any award as money that arrives later rather than as a reduction at the counter.

Student Reviews
No rating appears here, and it is the shape of what WBUAFS files that prevents one, not a gap in the research. The only outcome data this university files covers one of its four undergraduate programmes: fishery science and dairy technology are absent from the ranking return entirely, so there is no common measure on which the three faculties could be scored against each other, let alone against a national field.
The question worth putting to a current student is one no document above answers: how the departmental written test and the personal interview were actually weighted for the master's programme, since the university publishes the two stages but never the split between them.
Campus
Gallery
The pictures a WBUAFS applicant needs are not of a frontage, and none are reproduced here: the Belgachia heritage building tells you nothing about where the teaching happens, and the Mohanpur ruminant, pig, goat and poultry units, the Chakgaria ponds and the ambulatory van of the clinical complex are the estate that decides what five and a half years feel like. Nothing from the university's picture gallery has been cleared for reuse, so ask for a campus visit at Mohanpur or Chakgaria and see the working units rather than the offices.
