Placement at Navsari Agricultural University changed shape inside two years. Of the undergraduates who finished in the minimum stipulated time, 60 out of 440 were placed in 2021-22 and 391 out of 598 in 2023-24, on the university's own return to the national ranking framework. That is the sharpest change in any figure NAU reports about its graduates, and it sits beside the admission facts a Gujarat student actually has to plan against: the college-wise merit marks that closed the 2026-27 round, the seats held back for candidates from outside the state, and the one degree in the Gujarat agricultural system that only Navsari teaches.

Overview

NAU is a state agricultural university with a territory, not just a campus. The Navsari Zone of erstwhile GAU had attained the status of independent State Agricultural University (SAU) with the promulgation of Gujarat Agricultural Universities Act 2004 on May 1, 2004, and what it inherited was a working brief for seven districts of South Gujarat viz., Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Dangs and Valsad. The headquarters is in Navsari town, in the belt between Surat and Valsad, and the teaching is scattered deliberately across that map rather than gathered at one address.

The university is younger than most of the units inside it. Its flagship teaching institute, Navinchandra Mafatlal College of Agriculture, was the first educational institute related to agriculture in the region of south Gujarat established in May-1965, and several of the research stations NAU absorbed had been running for decades before either the university or its predecessor existed.

A large minority of the roll has travelled to south Gujarat from somewhere else. NAU reported 1788 undergraduates and 396 postgraduates for the 2025 ranking cycle, of whom 446 undergraduates and 113 postgraduates came from outside Gujarat, with 205 full-time doctoral scholars on the roll.

One administrative detail is worth carrying into the admission section, because it decides who answers a query. The four state agricultural universities admit through a single common process, and its undergraduate help desk sits at Navsari: the state portal sends applicants with a problem to uggsauca@nau.in, an address on NAU's own mail domain, and a landline on the Navsari exchange. The postgraduate round is advertised by the Registrar, JAU, Junagadh instead.

Courses & Fees

Eight institutes award degrees and six polytechnics award diplomas, and the address changes with the subject.

One of those lines has no counterpart elsewhere in the state system, at either level. B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry appears exactly once in the whole state cutoff sheet, at the College of Forestry, NAU, Navsari, and the master's degree in forestry is likewise taught at College of Forestry, Navsari Agril. University and nowhere else among Gujarat's agricultural universities.

Fees come from three separate documents, and only one of them is NAU's. The diploma sheet is the university's own, in Gujarati, and it is worth reading in full because the totals are small and the gap between the columns is not an error.

Diploma fee headBoysGirls
Deposits at first registration480480
Payable annually, at the start of the odd semester100100
Payable each semester640380
Total1220960

The difference in the semester row is tuition and the hostel room charge, and it disappears for women: the sheet's own note exempts female students holding Indian citizenship from both heads, which is why the tuition line of 200 rupees a semester is billed to boys only. Registration, library, examination, gymkhana, cultural and laboratory charges are the same for everyone.

The degree fees are not NAU's to set, and both schedules sit on the state's admission portals rather than on nau.in. The undergraduate one is section 7 of the information booklet for the 2026-27 common admission, which prints a single fee table applying to every constituent college of all four universities. Read it from the source rather than from a listing site: the booklet is published as a scanned image, so its numbers cannot be lifted by machine and are frequently misquoted second-hand. Its three blocks are deposits at first registration, a small annual charge at the start of the odd semester, and the semester bill, and the whole gap between the boys' column and the girls' column is two lines, tuition and the hostel room charge, both waived in constituent colleges for female students holding Indian citizenship exactly as on NAU's diploma sheet. Postgraduate fees come from a third document again, the information booklet for post graduate programmes common to the four universities, where the same waiver runs across every faculty.

Admissions

A JEE Main or NEET score buys nothing at Navsari, and that holds for the two B.Tech. degrees as much as for the rest. Every first-year undergraduate place is filled through the common online admission the four Gujarat agricultural universities run together at ug.gsauca.in, on merit built from a GUJCET score and Class 12 science marks, or through the national quota that the Indian Council of Agricultural Research fills from its own counselling. Those two mechanics are common to every agricultural university in the state, so what follows is the part that is specific to Navsari.

Which of NAU's degrees you want decides which application you fill. The state advertisement splits its programmes into categories, and NAU's degrees fall into two of them: B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry and B.Tech. (Biotechnology) sit in the first, and B.Tech. (Agril. Engineering) sits in the second. A candidate who wants both forestry at Navsari and agricultural engineering at Dediapada is filling two applications, not one.

At postgraduate level the entry bar is a mark, not a rank. The 2026-27 booklet fixes the minimum at the bachelor's degree as 60 percent or an OGPA of 6.00 on a ten-point scale for general and EWS candidates, and 55 percent or 5.50 for SEBC, ST, SC, differently abled and sponsored candidates. The bar is absolute: a candidate from a private university or college that is neither approved by the state government nor accredited by ICAR is not merely ranked lower but is not considered eligible for Common admission for post graduate programmes of SAUs and is barred from sitting the entrance test at all.

Navsari is one of the four places the postgraduate machinery physically happens. The booklet provides for the online entrance test at Junagadh, Anand, Navsari and Sardarkrushinagar and for counselling at the same four campuses, and the candidate names the centre in the application form.

The diploma door is separate again and opens after Class 10 rather than Class 12. NAU's published procedure has the State Council / Nodal Officer inviting online applications through an admission notice in leading Gujarati newspapers timed to the Secondary School Certificate Examination results, with intake for the first semester set by the university.

Cutoff

An applicant here is scored on one of two ledgers and never on both, and domicile decides which. Gujarat's own ledger prints marks out of 100 rather than ranks, college by college, and the figures below are from the third online round, the last one before offline counselling opens.

Read the reserved columns before the general one, because they behave differently here than they do further north in the state. At Waghai the Scheduled Tribe mark of 64.6166 closed above the Scheduled Caste mark of 61.8500, at Bharuch the two sit within a mark of each other at 64.0166 and 64.8000, and even at the Navsari flagship the gap is under a mark. At B. A. College of Agriculture in Anand the order is the usual one, with SC closing at 77.9500 and ST well below it at 67.7833. That is competition from the tribal belt NAU was set up to serve, and an ST candidate planning on a soft landing at a Navsari college is planning on the wrong number.

Agricultural engineering at Dediapada asks the least of a board result of any degree in the table. It closed at 55.3833 in the general column against 78.7166 for the agriculture degree at Navsari, and forestry at 63.9833 is the least contested of the four-year degrees taught in Navsari town itself.

Where Gujarat's sheet prints marks, the ICAR sheet prints ranks, and it splits them by the applicant's home state instead of pooling them. NAU appears against home states from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to Kerala, Rajasthan and West Bengal in the 2025 sheet, which is what the outside-state enrolment figure looks like from the admission end.

The Gujarat line in that table is the one worth pausing on. A Gujarat student is not shut out of the national route at their own state's university: Navsari filled Gujarat-domicile places from the ICAR list too, at rank 2139 in the unreserved column and 10019 in the Scheduled Tribe column for the agriculture degree, and again in later rounds for forestry and for agricultural engineering at Dediapada. That is a second door into the same colleges, on a completely different exam.

Placements

The undergraduate record moved on two counts at once inside two years, and the direction was the same on both.

Undergraduate cohortGraduated in minimum timePlacedMedian salaryWent to higher studies
2021-2244060Rs 2,40,000161
2022-23356114Rs 3,37,000178
2023-24598391Rs 4,22,000207

Higher study was the majority outcome at the start of that window and the minority outcome by the end of it. By 2023-24 the placed count of 391 had overtaken the 207 who went to higher studies, and the median had risen from 240000 to 422000 rupees while the graduating cohort itself grew. Both things rarely happen together.

The postgraduate median nearly doubled over the same window.

Postgraduate cohortGraduated in minimum timePlacedMedian salaryWent to higher studies
2021-2223867Rs 3,20,94142
2022-2318849Rs 5,85,99638
2023-24205122Rs 6,30,00083

On the same return a master's median of 630000 rupees stands against 422000 at bachelor's level, which is what two extra years at Navsari are worth in the published figures.

NAU's own placement office counts differently, and a candidate should know which number they are being shown. The University Placement and Counselling Cell, which sits under the Director of Students' Welfare, reports against a placement year rather than a graduating cohort, and against the students who opted in rather than everyone who finished. On that basis its thirteen-year report puts placement year 2025 at 220 placed out of the 254 who opted in, against 325 of 422 in 2024 and 186 of 303 in 2023, with the top pay packet rising from 10.25 lakhs to 12.00. The opt-in is where the honest caveat lives: in 2025 only 254 of 843 students, under a third, entered the placement process at all.

The recruiter roll is published too, name by name. NAU's Placement Report 2023 names every one of the 91 organisations that interviewed on campus that year, and the list is a fair map of where a South Gujarat agriculture degree actually leads. Gujarat's own agro-industry is heavily represented, with AMUL, GSFC Ltd. and its Agrotech arm, ATUL Ltd. and the ASPEE Group of Companies whose name is on three of the institutes listed above; the crop-input majors Bayer CropScience, Syngenta, Sulphur Mills, Dhanuka Agritech and Rallis (TATA) India Ltd. recruit alongside them; and so, tellingly, do half a dozen taluka-level farmer producer companies at Gandevi, Jalalpore and Valia and rural development bodies such as PRADAN. The single biggest cheque that year came from Aakash BYJU's, a coaching company rather than an agricultural one, which is worth weighing before reading a top package as a farm-sector salary.

The cell's other output is training rather than hiring. Its progress leaflet counts 115 placement interviews in 2025, its highest ever, a highest-ever pay of 12 LPA, and a Campus to Corporate preparatory module that the same cell has run for NAU's passing-out batches every year since 2013.

Seat Matrix

Sanctioned undergraduate intake has not grown; it has wobbled. NAU reported 551 approved four-year seats in 2023-24 against 638 the year before and 551 the year before that, with postgraduate intake steady at 237.

For anyone applying from another state, the ICAR block is the only intake figure fixed and published in advance of counselling.

Postgraduate seats are published faculty by faculty for 2026-2027, and NAU is the only university in that booklet whose master's intake is printed across three towns rather than one. Read the town labels with care: the booklet files the engineering master's under Navsari even though the college itself is at Dediapada.

Inside the agriculture faculty the seats bunch rather than spread. Genetics and plant breeding carries 12 master's places at Navsari and 06 doctoral ones, agronomy 10 and 08, while agricultural meteorology has a single master's place at 01 and nematology and seed science and technology, both offered elsewhere in the state, carry no Navsari seat in that booklet at all. Forestry runs the other way: 14 master's places against 09 doctoral ones is a deep research pipeline for one small faculty.

What survives to the fourth round tells you which colleges fill under pressure. After the third online round the College of Forestry was still carrying 08 general and 08 SEBC vacancies and the biotechnology institute at Surat 07 and 09, while N. M. College of Agriculture had 04 general seats left and Bharuch 03.

Rankings

NAU is ranked in one national table, the specialist one, and its scorecard is lopsided in a way the rank alone hides. In the Ministry of Education's ranking framework, the 2025 Agriculture and Allied Sectors table puts Navsari at 34 with 49.13 points.

NIRF 2025 parameterNAU score out of 100
Teaching, learning and resources80.17
Graduation outcomes69.91
Outreach and inclusivity53.19
Perception15.87
Research and professional practice13.97

The teaching score is the striking one. At 80.17 it is higher than the 76.48 recorded for Anand Agricultural University, the only other Gujarat institution in that table, which is ranked above NAU at 27. What holds Navsari down is the pair at the bottom of its own column: a perception score of 15.87, which measures what academic peers and employers say rather than what the university does, and research and professional practice at 13.97. That pair, and not the rank, is the number a candidate should weigh.

Two other tables put Navsari somewhere different again, and both are worth a candidate's time because they move far more than the NIRF rank does. ICAR runs its own Ranking of Agricultural Universities, and NAU prints its own record in it without editing: ranked XXII (2016), IX (2017), XIV (2018), XLII (2019) XXXI (2020). A single-digit placing one year and a placing in the forties three years later is not a stable institution being measured; it is a volatile ranking, and no one year of it should be read as Navsari's standing.

Gujarat's own rating framework read the same shape as NIRF, one strength and one weakness, in an earlier round. On its 2021-22 Gujarat State Institutional Rating Framework scorecard NAU took 82.07 for teaching, learning and resources and 87.2 for graduation outcomes, both rated five stars, 72.74 for outreach and inclusivity at four, and 30.66 for research and professional practice at two, for 58.53 of the 85.5 points that sheet actually scored it on. Whichever framework you pick, the research column is the one that drags.

Departments

Teaching is organised by faculty rather than by campus, and the list is short: Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Biotechnology, each with its own Dean. Research is organised separately again, across 25 research centres at 15 locations working on the mandate crops of the zone, paddy, sugarcane, cotton, sorghum, small millets, mango, banana, sapota and vegetables.

What distinguishes NAU's departmental map is not the subject list, which the state fixes for all four universities, but which subject is available in which town. The agriculture faculty's 87 master's places at Navsari spread across thirteen disciplines; the 16 at Bharuch cover six, and the 06 at Waghai only three. Those three, agronomy at 03, genetics and plant breeding at 02 and plant pathology at 01, are also the only disciplines NAU teaches at all three addresses. Everything laboratory-bound stays at headquarters: biochemistry, microbiology, plant physiology, molecular biology and biotechnology, agricultural economics, meteorology and statistics have no seat outside Navsari town, and nematology and seed science and technology, both taught elsewhere in Gujarat, carry no NAU seat at all.

Horticulture and forestry are Navsari-only at every level. Horticulture runs fruit science, vegetable science, floriculture and landscaping, post-harvest management and plantation and spice crops, the last of those with one 01 master's place; forestry runs silviculture and agroforestry, forest biology and tree improvement, forest products and utilization and forest resource management.

Some of these teaching units were research stations first. The Soil Science department at Navsari grew out of a project sanctioned initially in January 1967 by Government of Gujarat for the south Gujarat heavy-rainfall zone, and it became a department in 1976. The biotechnology institute at Surat was established as Gujarat Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (GABI) in April 2012 before it took its present name, and forestry taught inside the horticulture college from 1988 until the College of Forestry established to an independent college effective from 01/06/2022.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The most important facility NAU has is land under long-running experiments, and several of those experiments are older than independent India. The Regional Rice Research Station at Vyara is the oldest rice research station in the Gujarat state established at Vyara in the year 1934, the Fruit Research Station at Gandevi was established in 1935 by Gaikwad state to develop horticultural activities in the region, and the Hill Millet Research Station at Waghai in the Dangs has been running since 1954-55 on early-maturing paddy and small millets. The Wheat Research Station at Bardoli was established in May 1963 and, in its own words, transferred to Gujarat Agricultural University from 01/06/1972 and is now running under Navsari Agricultural University from 01/05/2004.

Extension reaches growers through five Krishi Vigyan Kendras at Navsari, Vyara, Waghai, Dediapada and Surat, all of them ICAR institutional projects, alongside an Agricultural Technology Information Center and a Food Quality Testing Laboratory at Navsari. The teaching estate also includes an Educational Museum established at Navsari Agricultural University that was inaugurated by a Governor of Gujarat, a Bakery Training Unit, a Centre for Innovation and Agripreneurship housed above the agribusiness institute, and an organic farm sitting on the historic road Dandi known for Salt Satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi about 3 km from Navsari railway station.

Two units are worth naming because they attach directly to what NAU teaches. The College of Forestry runs a Bamboo Resource Centre with a bambusetum having 34 bamboo species alongside a bamboo nursery, preservation setup and workshop, which is the practical end of the state system's only forestry degree. And the university's most widely used device is a trap rather than a variety: the Nauroji Stonehouse Fruit Fly Trap, which NAU costs at roughly 350 rupees a hectare against a benefit it puts at 81,840 a hectare on its 2009 estimate. Behind both sits a research estate carrying 18 All India Coordinated Research Projects including four voluntary centres.

Capital spending in 2023-24 went overwhelmingly to laboratories rather than books. New equipment took 223550722 rupees that year against 7515044 rupees for the library, and a step change from the 20684982 rupees of equipment spending two years earlier. Disability access is better than partial: more than 80 percent of NAU's buildings carry a ramp or lift and a purpose-built toilet.

Hostel

Residence is the norm here, not the exception, and NAU states the size of the estate on its own site: eighteen boy's hostels, thirteen girl's hostels and one International hostel to accommodate more than 2500 students. Against a total roll of 1788 undergraduates and 396 postgraduates, that is capacity for essentially everyone, which matters for the 446 undergraduates who come from outside Gujarat. What NAU does not publish is the split of those blocks across its five teaching towns, so a candidate offered a seat at Bharuch, Waghai, Surat or Dediapada cannot tell from the site what is available at that specific college and has to ask its office.

The price is published. On the diploma sheet a hostel deposit of 100 rupees is taken at first registration and the room charge sits inside the semester total, waived entirely for women; the mess deposit is left variable because it is fixed locally at each polytechnic. Degree-level room charges come from the state booklets instead, waived for female students on both.

The building programme is running hard, and it is running at the outlying colleges rather than only at headquarters. NAU's 2026-27 tender covers the Construction of UG Girls' Hostel at Navsari, Bakery School at Navsari, and UG Boys' Hostel at Waghai in one notice, and its notification register carries earlier administrative approvals for an EXTENSION OF GIRL'S HOSTEL FOR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AT NAU,WAGHAI and a CONSTRUCTION OF BOYS HOSTEL FOR POLYTECHNIC AT NAU, VYARA, plus a girls' hostel at the College of Forestry and a boys' hostel at the biotechnology institute in Surat.

Faculty

NAU entered 238 faculty members in its 2025 ranking return, carrying 1788 undergraduates and 396 postgraduates between them, spread across the degree colleges at Navsari, Bharuch, Waghai, Surat and Dediapada and a long list of research stations.

The doctoral output those staff supervise is substantial and uneven. NAU awarded 71 doctorates in 2023-24 and 69 in 2022-23, against 164 in 2021-22, a spike the university does not explain in the return; 205 full-time scholars were still registered at the end of the period.

The external research desk grew faster than any other part of the university, which sharpens rather than settles the question its ranking scores raise. Sponsored projects went from 46 in 2021-22 to 136 in 2023-24, the number of funding agencies from 27 to 67, and the money received from 61400000 rupees to 240009000. Consultancy moved the same way, from 12 projects for 6 client organisations to 40 projects for 31 clients, worth 111151000 rupees. Funded work and citation counts are different things, and a prospective research student should ask a prospective supervisor about publications rather than reading the grant totals as a proxy for them.

Notable Alumni

NAU keeps no published roll of distinguished graduates. The alumni activity that does appear on its site is organisational rather than biographical: a Bag-Van Alumni Convention-2025 held in April 2025, and a notice inviting students/alumni of NAU to apply for pre-incubation support under the state's SSIP scheme. Its convocation apparatus is active and public, with archived convocation speeches and annual convocation records, but neither those pages nor any alumni page names individual graduates and their later careers. Rather than repeat names that circulate on listing sites without a traceable source, this section stays empty until the university publishes one.

The main campus sits at Eru Char Rasta on Dandi Road in Navsari town, in the Surat to Valsad stretch of south Gujarat. The rest of the university is not: the biotechnology institute is at Surat, the agriculture colleges at Bharuch and at Waghai in the Dangs, and the engineering college at Dediapada in Narmada district, each in a different district from the last. Check which town your degree is taught in before you accept a seat, because the university's name says Navsari and only some of it is there.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

NAU is graded, but not by the body most candidates check. The agricultural education system accredits its own institutions through the National Agricultural Education Accreditation Board of ICAR, and NAU states on its own site that All the eight constituent colleges of NAU, Navsari are accredited by "National Agricultural Education Accreditation Board" of ICAR, New Delhi up to March 31, 2026. The Accreditation Notification (For the period of five years from 01/04/2021 to 31/03/2026) is posted in full, and it carries the mark itself: the Board accredited Navsari with a grade it records as equivalent to Grade B.

Read the annexure rather than the headline, because accreditation at NAU is programme by programme and some programmes did not get it. The Board approved N.M. College of Agriculture's degrees, the biotechnology institute's B.Tech., the horticulture and forestry degrees and the agribusiness MBA, but held back several master's and doctoral programmes whose degree nomenclature is not recommended by BSMA 2021 guidelines pending the university's own Academic Council, among them soil science, agricultural extension, crop physiology and agricultural microbiology at Navsari and soil science and extension at Bharuch. Two of the three named exclusions belong to the engineering college at Dediapada, whose M.Tech. (Agricultural Engineering) in Soil and Water Conservation Engineering and Food Processing and Food Engineering streams were not approved. An applicant to a master's programme at NAU should ask the Dean whether their specific discipline is inside the accreditation or outside it.

The dates matter now. That five-year window ran to 31 March 2026 and has closed on the published record; no later notification appears on nau.in, so a candidate who needs current accreditation status in writing, most often for a scholarship or a foreign application, should ask the Registrar's office rather than infer it from the site. The supporting document is public: NAU publishes a programme-by-programme self study report covering every degree at every constituent college. There is no NAAC grade for NAU, on its website or in NAAC's accredited list, and none should be quoted for it.

Aid

Scholarships

Fee reimbursement here is close to complete, and most of it arrives from outside the university rather than from any award NAU hands out. Among 1788 undergraduates, NAU classes 233 as economically backward and 813 as belonging to a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or Other Backward Class. State and central schemes covered tuition in full for 965 of them, and NAU's own funds for a further 81. The number left without full reimbursement was 0.

The postgraduate figures follow the same pattern. NAU classes 98 of its postgraduates as economically backward and 213 as socially challenged; 294 were reimbursed by government, 14 by the institution and 3 by private bodies, and here too the number left without full reimbursement was 0.

Nobody calls the biggest saving on this campus a scholarship. Female students holding Indian citizenship pay no tuition and no hostel room fee, on both the postgraduate fee sheet common to the state's agricultural universities and NAU's own diploma fee sheet. With 715 women among the undergraduates and 194 among the postgraduates, that waiver reaches a substantial part of the campus.

There is no verified student rating for NAU on this page, and there will not be one until reviews can be tied to identified students at named colleges. Ratings for a university spread across Navsari, Bharuch, Waghai, Surat and Dediapada are close to meaningless anyway, because the colleges sit in five different towns, so two students at the same university may share a syllabus and nothing else.

What the university does provide is a formal route for a complaint rather than a review. NAU publishes a students' grievance redressal committee policy document, links the National Ragging Prevention Programme from its student pages, and has notified an anti-ragging committee at university level. A student with a problem at Bharuch or Waghai has a written procedure to follow, which is more than a star rating would have told them.
