Dr Y S R Horticulture University
Two candidates in the same open category, sitting the same AP EAPCET paper, needed ranks of 4543 and 23005 to hold a seat at the end of the last published counselling. The only difference between them was a certificate from a Mandal Revenue Officer saying the family owns an acre of land. Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University is Andhra Pradesh's horticulture university, with a forestry degree running alongside since 2025-26, and the door a candidate walks through decides more here than the score does.
Overview
The university was set up by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through G.O.Ms.No.134 dated 26-06-2007 at Venkataramannagudem, near Tadepalligudem in West Godavari District, and it calls itself the second Horticultural University in the country. The reasoning it publishes is commercial rather than academic: Andhra Pradesh is the leader in the production of mango, oil palm, chillies, turmeric, sweet orange, papaya and second largest producer of total fruits and spices, and a state with that crop mix wanted its own faculty for it.
Its first years were borrowed. For the opening session the state's Agricultural Production Commissioner ran it as Special Officer, supported by an officer on special duty and a coordinator drawn from Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, and the horticulture teaching then running at Rajendranagar in Hyderabad under that university was moved across. It started functioning independently from 10-05-2008 once its Board of Management and first Vice-Chancellor were in place.
One of the three colleges it opened in its first academic year is no longer its own. Alongside Venkataramannagudem and Anantharajupet it started a college at Mojerla in Mahaboobnagar District; Mahaboobnagar went to Telangana in 2014, and the ICAR accreditation register now files College of Horticulture, Mojerla under Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University at Mulugu instead. What is left in Andhra Pradesh is five Colleges of Horticulture, at Venkataramannagudem, Anantharajupeta, Parvathipuram, Chinalataripi and Pulivendula, and four horticultural polytechnics of its own.
Around the teaching sits a research and extension network the university sizes at 4 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, 20 Horticultural Research Stations, 5 Colleges of Horticulture and 4 Horticultural Polytechnics, working through Rythu Bharosa Kendras and the state Department of Horticulture. Its student body is unusually female and almost entirely local: the ranking framework return counts 435 male and 1107 female undergraduates, 1448 of them from within the state against 93 from outside it.
Courses & Fees
The undergraduate list is two degrees long. B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture runs at all five constituent colleges and at three private colleges affiliated to the university, and B.Sc. (Hons.) (Forestry) is taught at Venkataramannagudem alone. Below them sits a two-year Diploma in Horticulture taken straight after Class 10, and above them a master's list that reaches past horticulture into plant pathology, entomology, plant breeding, natural farming, soil science and an MBA in agri-business management.
| Level | What is taught | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma, two years | Diploma in Horticulture | Four constituent and seven affiliated horticultural polytechnics |
| Undergraduate, four years | B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture | Five constituent colleges and three affiliated colleges |
| Undergraduate, four years | B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry | College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem |
| Master's, two years | M.Sc. (Hort.) in Fruit Science, Vegetable Science, Floriculture and Landscaping, Plantation Spices Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Post Harvest Management | Venkataramannagudem and Anantharajupeta |
| Master's, two years | M.Sc. in Plant Pathology and Soil Science; M.Sc. (Ag.) in Plant Protection Entomology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Natural Farming | Venkataramannagudem and Anantharajupeta |
| Master's, two years | M.B.A. in Agri-Business Management | College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta |
| Doctoral, three years | Ph.D. (Hort.) in the five horticulture disciplines; Ph.D. in Plant Pathology and in Plant Protection Entomology | Venkataramannagudem and Anantharajupeta |
The undergraduate bill is printed as one figure to be paid at joining, and hostel charges are folded into it rather than billed separately, which is why the total looks large beside a tuition line that is a small fraction of it.
| Head, 2026-27, constituent colleges | Government seat | Payment seat |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee, per semester | Rs 9,195 | Rs 1,25,540 |
| Other fee | Rs 18,533 | Rs 18,533 |
| Library deposit, refundable | Rs 3,125 | Rs 3,125 |
| Laboratory deposit, refundable | Rs 3,125 | Rs 3,125 |
| Hostel deposit, refundable | Rs 10,490 | Rs 10,490 |
| Mess advance, refundable | Rs 10,490 | Rs 10,490 |
| Hostel establishment charges, per semester | Rs 12,480 | Rs 12,480 |
| Hostel room rent, per semester | Rs 2,530 | Rs 2,530 |
| Total at joining | Rs 69,968 | Rs 1,86,313 |
That total is not the annual cost of the degree. Four of its heads are deposits handed back at the end, and the tuition line is charged per semester, so Rs 69,968 is a first payment rather than a year's bill. Line up the two columns and seven of the eight heads are identical; only the tuition row differs, which is the whole of why a payment seat is priced where it is. Getting to the counselling table costs Rs.1200/- for general candidates and Rs.600/- for SC, ST and differently abled candidates in registration fee, and walking away later costs Rs.5,190/-, or Rs.2,595/- for SC, ST and PH candidates, forfeiting everything else if admissions have already closed.
The three affiliated colleges are priced per year and each one differently, under a state government order of October 2023.
| Affiliated college | Convener quota, per year | Management quota, per year |
|---|---|---|
| K. B. R. College of Horticulture, C.S.Puram | Rs 38,700 | Rs 77,400 |
| N.S. College of Horticultural Sciences, Markapur | Rs 44,000 | Rs 88,000 |
| Sri Krishnadevaraya College of Horticultural Sciences, Ananthapuramu | Rs 77,700 | Rs 1,55,400 |
Postgraduate money works on a different clock. Master's and doctoral fees are priced across the whole degree rather than per year, semester column by semester column, and both annexures carry the same standing order from the Registrar: in every academic year there is a ten per cent hike in the fee structure of postgraduate degree programmes. Both also exempt day scholars from hostel room rent, hostel establishment charges and the hostel and mess deposits, which is the largest single saving available at this level. The M.Sc. annexure and the doctoral annexure are scanned images rather than text, so their grand totals cannot be copied and no listing site carries them; read your own row off the annexure itself before budgeting. Two postgraduate costs are printed in plain text and are worth knowing early: an application fee of Rs.1500/- for General (OC & BCs) and Rs. 750/- for SC/ST Differently abled, and a seat cancellation fee of Rs.2,500/- for general candidates and Rs.1,250/- for SC, ST and PH candidates, charged whether the seat is given up before or after admissions close.
Admissions
There is no JEE and no NEET anywhere in this university, and no single entrance either. Five separate doors lead to the same B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture classroom, and they run on different exams, different application methods and different deadlines.
| Route | What it runs on | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| General and payment seats | AP EAPCET 2026 rank | Bi.P.C. or M.Bi.P.C. Intermediate candidates of Andhra Pradesh |
| HORTICET-2026 | The university's own written test | Holders of the Dr.YSRHU Diploma in Horticulture |
| ICAR All India Quota | CUET (UG) 2026, through ICAR's counselling portal | Candidates from outside the state |
| NRI and NRI sponsored quota | Merit in Intermediate marks, no entrance | NRI and NRI sponsored candidates |
| In-service quota | Reserved seats filled outside the EAPCET merit list | Horticulture Extension Officers and university field staff |
For the main route the brochure is exact. Selection for both undergraduate degrees is carried out duly following the G.O.Ms.No.184, Dt.20-08-1993 Govt. of A.P., on AP EAPCET 2026 rank with State Level rank only considered, and a tie broken on the optional-subject marks of the qualifying examination before age is looked at. The brochure does not say which way age then cuts; the older courses page, which reverses the two tests, gives it to the older candidate. Registration ran from 24-07-2026 to 10-08-2026, and no separate login is created: the registered mobile number and the EAPCET hall ticket authenticate every step.
The farmers' quota takes forty per cent (40%) of the seats and is the reason the cutoff table below has two columns for every category. Two tests have to be satisfied together. The land test is an acre standing in a parent's or the candidate's own name, and the brochure rules out anything owned by grandfather, grandmother, guardian or any other relations, which is where most claims die. The schooling test wants four years spent in non-municipal-area schools somewhere between Class 1 and Intermediate. Proving both takes four uploads, a Tahsildar-certified Form-I of patta numbers, a headmaster-certified Form-II for the schooling, the Adangal or 1B from Meebhoomi, and every study certificate being claimed; an incomplete set is summarily rejected rather than queried.
Two rules then decide which pool your rank sits in. Region comes first: 85% of available seats shall be reserved in favour of local candidates of Andhra University and Sri Venkateswara University regions in the ratio of 65.62 and 34.38 under G.O.Ms.No.21 of May 2025, leaving the rest unreserved. Category comes second, and it is not the roster a candidate from another state would recognise: the Scheduled Caste share is split three ways, SC-I at one per cent, SC-II at 6.5% and SC-III at 7.5%, under the Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Castes (Sub-Classification) Rules, 2025. Backward classes take 29% across five sub-groups, Scheduled Tribes six per cent, special categories nine per cent, and EWS adds 10% (supernumerary) seats on top.
HORTICET is the route almost nothing written about this university describes correctly. It is not an alternative to EAPCET for school leavers: eligibility is a pass in Diploma in Horticulture course from Dr. YSRHU and nothing else, which makes the university's own polytechnics a second entrance into its own degree. The paper is 200 multiple choice objective questions over two hours in English, sat at Venkataramannagudem or Anantharajupeta, and it is still written on paper in blue/black ink. There is a floor as well as a rank: the qualifying percentage of marks is 25% of the aggregate for general and backward class candidates, with no minimum at all for SC and ST candidates. The application is posted, not uploaded: the form has to reach the Registrar on or before 26-08-2026 by 4.00 PM with a demand draft or online payment proof for Rs.500/- for SC/ST and differently abled (PHC) candidates and Rs.1000/- for all other candidates, and a college preference form goes in the same envelope. The paper was set for 10-09-2026, which the notification itself marks tentative.
The all-India quota is the one place where the university's own website is behind the rulebook. Its courses page still says those seats are filled on performance in the AIEEA written examination, but ICAR's public notice for this session invites candidates who have appeared in CUET (UG) 2026, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to use its own portal for registration, choice filling and seat allotment. An applicant from outside Andhra Pradesh should therefore prepare for CUET and watch that portal rather than wait for a Dr.YSRHU notification.
Postgraduate entry is decided entirely off campus. The admission notification and the information booklet that goes with it both invite candidates who qualified and secured rank in ICAR AIEEA(PG)-2025 and ICAR AICE JRF/SRF (Ph.D) 2025 respectively, and the university holds no entrance test of its own at this level. It applies its own floors on top: a master's applicant needs minimum OGPA of 6.60/10.00 (SC/ST 5.60/10.00) or sixty per cent in the traditional system, a doctoral applicant 6.50/10.00 in the master's from an ICAR accredited university, and the upper age limit is 40 years. A three-year bachelor's degree is not considered at all. The application itself is offline, posted to the Registrar with a demand draft for Rs.1500/- for General (OC & BCs) and Rs. 750/- for SC/ST Differently abled, and counselling is held in person at the Meeting Hall of the administrative office.
Cutoff
The university publishes its closing ranks instead of leaving candidates to reconstruct them from hearsay, and the resulting sheet is the most useful document on its site. These are the last AP EAPCET ranks admitted to its own government colleges at the end of the 2024-25 counselling.

| SC, women | 7217 | 21237 | 10435 | 37733 | 11692 | 23822 |
The farmers' column is looser than the non-farmers' column almost everywhere, and by wide margins: an open-category candidate in the Andhra University region closed at 12565 without the land certificate and 42583 with it. Scheduled Tribes are the one exception: the tribal farmer rank of 11680 closed tighter than the non-farmer 11971, the only row on the sheet where the land certificate bought nothing, and on a six per cent share a single year is too thin to read as a trend. The other number worth stopping on is the EWS row, where the unreserved general rank of 4296 closed tighter than OC's own 4543, so the economically weaker section pool was the hardest door on the sheet rather than the easiest. The university states that these ranks cover the 1st and 2nd online counseling sessions for 2024-25, excluding manual counselling, so the true last rank after the mop-up round is looser still, and it warns in the same note that the figures may not represent the final ranks for admissions in 2025-26. No equivalent sheet has been posted for a later cycle.
For the postgraduate and doctoral programmes there is no closing rank to read, because the merit list is built from national ICAR ranks inside each subject group and the university publishes only its eligible and not-eligible candidate lists. HORTICET publishes a rank list rather than a cutoff, naming each successful diploma holder against a rank.
Placements
Two thirds of every undergraduate batch leaves for more study rather than for work, and the undergraduate median pay of the minority who take a job has fallen in each of the three cohorts the university has filed.
| Cohort | Graduating | Placed | Median salary | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, 2022-23 | 362 | 86 | Rs 5,80,000 | 253 |
| Undergraduate, 2023-24 | 348 | 30 | Rs 5,00,000 | 291 |
| Undergraduate, 2024-25 | 328 | 71 | Rs 4,20,000 | 234 |
| Postgraduate, 2022-23 | 61 | 25 | Rs 6,20,000 | 36 |
| Postgraduate, 2023-24 | 61 | 1 | Rs 4,50,000 | 57 |
| Postgraduate, 2024-25 | 49 | 2 | Rs 6,24,000 | 20 |
Take the postgraduate median with care. In the two most recent years it rests on 1 and 2 placed students, which is a salary and not a market. What those rows really show is a master's cohort that goes into research and doctoral study: 57 of 61 in one year, and 63 full-time doctoral students on the rolls with 38 of them finishing in 2024-25 alone.
The machinery behind the numbers is thin, and the university describes it plainly. Each constituent college hands the job to a senior faculty member as its placement cell officer, who invites human resource staff from agriculture-based industries, banks and fertiliser companies and runs coaching in communication skills, bank examinations, personality development and how to present a bio-data. The site carries no recruiter list, no placement percentage and no highest package, so the ranking return is the only document in which any of those numbers exist.
Seat Matrix
The undergraduate matrix for 2026-27 is small and easy to misread, because the headline number counts only the government seats.
| Block | Seats |
|---|---|
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, constituent colleges | 360 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, payment seats | 13 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, Category A seats in affiliated colleges | 126 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry, Venkataramannagudem | 60 |
Those government seats are not spread evenly. The college-wise sheet gives Venkataramannagudem 130, Anantharajupeta 70, Pulivendula 60, and Parvathipuram and Chinalataripi 50 each, so more than a third of the intake is at the headquarters campus. The affiliated block shrank this year: the courses page still lists four private colleges with 240 seats between them and 168 on the convener quota, while the 2026-27 brochure counsels only three. An older seat table for this university therefore lists a college that has since dropped out of the counselling.
Several quota blocks sit inside or above that total rather than beside it. The ICAR all-India quota is 20% of the seats in the accredited colleges, which the courses page totals at 66; it leaves out Pulivendula, the one constituent college missing from ICAR's accredited list, so the block does not reconcile against the five-college intake above. HORTICET takes fifteen per cent, split as 61 seats in university colleges and 30 in affiliated ones. The NRI and NRI sponsored quota takes another fifteen per cent, or 56 seats, an industry sponsorship quota 2%, and a handful of places are held for serving Horticulture Extension Officers and university field staff.
Postgraduate intake is published discipline by discipline and it is genuinely small. For 2025-26 the master's programme carried 36 stipend seats and 60 other seats, of which the MBA in agri-business management alone accounts for 25 at Anantharajupeta, plus 4 seats under an outside-state quota. The doctoral programme carried 12 stipend and 13 other seats, with one supernumerary place for a university topper from outside Dr.YSRHU under the Inspire Fellowship. Work from the discipline line, not the total: several fields carry two seats across both colleges.
Rankings
Rank 40 in agriculture and allied sectors is the only national placement this university holds; it appears in no other 2025 table.
| NIRF 2025, Agriculture and Allied Sectors | Value |
|---|---|
| Rank | 40 |
| Overall score | 46.87 |
| Teaching, learning and resources | 71.84 |
| Research and professional practice | 9.53 |
| Graduation outcomes | 74.47 |
| Outreach and inclusivity | 57.29 |
| Perception | 18.43 |
Two of the five columns carry that placement and one destroys it: graduation outcomes at 74.47 against research and professional practice at 9.53, a research score barely half the next-lowest column on its own scorecard. Nothing else on the sheet drags the total the way that column does, and the gap between that score and the university's own research accounts is worth understanding before reading it as neglect. Its filing reports 311 sponsored projects in 2024-25 from 73 funding agencies, and separately 29 consultancy projects. What it does not have is the publication and patent record the parameter mostly measures: 1 patent published in 2024 and none granted. Field trials for a state horticulture department and papers in indexed journals are different kinds of work, and the framework counts the second.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
What matters most in a horticulture degree is the land it is taught on, and that is exactly what the university does not describe in numbers: its infrastructure page is a set of photographs, so no floor area, laboratory count or library holding can be quoted here from an official source. What it does describe in words is the student support around the teaching.
Health cover is organised hostel by hostel: separate consultation rooms, sick room, stretchers wheel chairs, Digital Thermometer, B.P.machine etc., are available in every hostels of the University, a medical officer visits each college for regular checkups, and ambulatory services are provided to all the constituent colleges with a driver on call around the clock, which is not a small thing on a rural campus a long drive from a large hospital. Sport runs under a physical director at each campus, with a Gym for boys and girls, Sports track for Athletics and facilities are available for indoor games alongside a sports complex and indoor and outdoor stadiums.
Accessibility exists only as ticked boxes on the ranking return, and the boxes stop short of the whole campus. Buildings with lifts or ramps and buildings with adapted toilets both sit in the more than 80% band, while walking aids, wheelchairs and moving a student from one block to another are each answered with a plain yes. On a site that runs from lecture halls through hostels to a working farm, the buildings outside that band are the part to ask about before accepting a seat.
Accommodation is not guaranteed with the seat. Both the undergraduate and the postgraduate brochures carry the same one-line condition, that Hostel facility shall be provided subject to the availability of accommodation, even though hostel establishment charges, room rent and the mess advance are billed inside the joining fee.
Hostel
Faculty
The university's own faculty page carries a maintenance notice rather than a list, so the only public roster of who teaches here sits inside its ranking return. That document names 122 teachers with designation, qualification and joining date, every one of them holding a doctorate, and 68 of them women, a bare majority on a campus whose undergraduate roll runs 1107 women to 435 men.
Read the joining dates rather than the total and a different shape appears. 32 of the names, close to one teacher in four, joined between 19-03-2022 and 30-03-2022, in one recruitment that landed fourteen years after the university began teaching. Before it the largest single intake was in 2009. Between early 2011 and September 2016 the list records no new appointment at all, and between 2017 and that 2022 wave none either. What that leaves is a department in two halves, senior staff carried over from the years when horticulture was taught elsewhere, and a large block of assistant professors four years into a first posting, with very little in between. The longest-serving name on the list joined on 17-09-1993, fourteen years before this university existed.
The senior team is named on the University Officers page: Dr. B. Prasanna Kumar as Dean of Horticulture and acting Dean of PG Studies, Dr. S. Surya Kumari as Director of Research, Dr. Ch. Ruth as Director of Extension, Dr. M. Madhavi as Registrar and Dr. C. Madhumathi as University Librarian and acting Dean of Student Affairs. One structural gap is worth knowing before reading any of that as settled: the university says its Board of Management is functioning with Ex Officio Members, with the members from other categories still to be nominated by the Chancellor.

Verified
Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
This is the section to read before believing an accreditation claim made for this university anywhere else. The National Agricultural Education Accreditation Board graded it A for the period 28/03/2021 to 27/03/2026, and ICAR's own notification of the award is published on the university's accreditation page as a scanned letter. That window closed in March of this year, and the current version of ICAR's accredited-universities list, updated in December 2025, is still the one that prints it. No renewal has been published by either body, which is a question to put to the Registrar in writing rather than an answer.
The register names the colleges it covers, and there are four of them: Venkatramangudem, Anantharajupeta, Parvathipuram and Chinalataripi. Pulivendula is not among them, which is why the ICAR quota seats described above are calculated on the other four alone. On the master's side the register recognises fewer disciplines than the university now teaches, so a candidate whose fellowship or later employer asks for an accredited programme should check their own discipline against that list rather than against the university's course page.
NAAC is a separate question, and the answer to it is a blank. The council publishes no grade for this university, the university publishes none either, and its row in the accreditation datasets behind this page carries nothing from NAAC, NBA, AICTE or AIU. None of that stops it awarding degrees, since a state university created by the Government of Andhra Pradesh needs no such badge to do so, but a NAAC grade quoted for it on a listing site is unsourced until the university itself prints one.
Aid
Scholarships
Money at this university flows mostly as fee reimbursement rather than as scholarship, and the scale of it is the important number. Out of an undergraduate roll of 1542, the ranking return counts 1251 socially challenged and 137 economically backward students, and reports how each of them is paying: 1165 draw a full tuition fee reimbursement from state and central government, 22 get one from private bodies, and 201 get none at all. For a family in that group the figure printed in the fee table is not the number that matters; the reimbursement decision is.
The stipends are state money attached to seats rather than applied for separately, and the page describing them is out of date on how the seats are won, still crediting a university entrance test where the current admission booklet uses the ICAR rank alone. On the amounts it is specific. It reports 36 PG and 12 Ph.D students are provided with stipends every year @ Rs.5,000/- per month for M.Sc (20 months) and @ Rs.7,000/- per month to Ph.D students (25 months) from the government of Andhra Pradesh, which is why the postgraduate seat matrix is split into stipend and non-stipend columns in the first place.
That split turns a preference between disciplines into a financial decision. A candidate holding an ICAR rank good enough for either should compare a non-stipend seat in a crowded field against a stipend seat in a quieter one before filling the option form, because the stipend runs for most of the degree and is not awarded later on merit.
Beyond that the university routes students to the state social welfare schemes through the Jnanabhumi portal, including Jagananna Vidya Deevena and Jagananna Vasathi Deevena, and facilitates the ICAR postgraduate scholarships for JRF rank holders and the National Talent Scholarship awarded by ICAR under its higher education scheme. It also records a National Overseas Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe students. Amounts for the ICAR awards are fixed nationally by the council rather than by the university.

No star rating for this university is carried here, because nothing published about student experience at Venkataramannagudem has been verified to a standard that would support one.
What is worth doing instead is putting four blunt questions to someone already on the rolls. Did a hostel bed actually come through, given that the joining fee bills hostel charges while the brochure promises a room only if one is free? If the farmers' quota was claimed, how long did Form-I take at the Tahsildar's office, and did the college accept the Adangal without a second trip? On a non-stipend master's seat, what did the second-year bill come to after the annual revision? And in the outgoing undergraduate batch, how many are sitting the ICAR postgraduate entrance rather than looking for work, given how far the filings put that group ahead?

No photographs of Venkataramannagudem appear on this page. The campus images on the university's own site have not been reproduced here, and taking pictures from anywhere else risks showing a campus that is not this one. Its own photo gallery and infrastructure pages are the place to look before making the trip.
