Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour
A Bihar-domicile student who reaches an undergraduate seat here through the state entrance test is paid to study. The university's own undergraduate regulation commits a stipend of Rs 2000 per month for eight semesters, plus a book grant, to everyone admitted through BCECE, Patna in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, biotechnology or agricultural engineering. That clause changes the arithmetic of studying here more than any fee table would, and it reaches four seats in every five at the agriculture and horticulture colleges and every seat at the biotechnology, engineering and forestry ones, which carry no national quota at all. What the state entrance does not fill is allotted by ICAR, on national terms. No undergraduate fee schedule is published for any of those five degrees.
Overview
Bihar Agricultural University is a state agricultural university at Sabour in Bhagalpur district, in the eastern half of Bihar. It was established on 5th August, 2010 by an Act (No. 20 of 2010) State Legislature of Bihar as a State University specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act. 1956. What the Act created was an administrative umbrella; the campus underneath it was already more than a century old, because the university was seated on the grounds of Bihar Agricultural College, a college whose foundation stone was laid by Sir Andrew Henderson Leith Frazer; Lt. Governor of Bengal on 17th August, 1908.
Sabour's teaching record starts long before 2010: a B.Sc (Ag) degree ran at the Sabour college from 1945 and first batch of 28 students passed out under Patna University in 1948, the postgraduate courses opened in August 1955 in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Entomology and Agricultural Extension, and the world's first mango hybrids, Prabhashankar and Mahmud Bahar were released from the site in 1951. What 2010 added was jurisdiction. The university now works across 25 districts in Bihar, from Araria and Kishanganj in the north to Rohtas and Buxar in the west, so its colleges and research stations are scattered across the state rather than gathered at Sabour.

Courses & Fees
Five undergraduate degrees are taught across nine college programmes, and one degree accounts for five of those nine. B.Sc (Hons.) Agriculture runs at the Sabour, Saharsa, Buxar, Purnea and Kishanganj colleges with 100 seats at each, which is why a candidate filling BCECE choices is really choosing a district as much as a course.
| Undergraduate programme | Where it is taught | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| B.Sc (Hons.) Agriculture | Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour | 100 |
| B.Sc (Hons.) Agriculture | Mandan Bharti Agricultural College, Agwanpur, Saharsa | 100 |

| B.Sc (Hons.) Horticulture | Nalanda College of Horticulture, Noorsarai | 50 |
| B.Tech (Biotechnology) | College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Sabour | 60 |
| B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering) | College of Agricultural Engineering, Ara | 60 |
| B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry | Bihar Forestry College and Research Institute, Munger | 50 |
Above that, the master's programme carries 144 seats across seventeen disciplines and the doctoral programme 42 across fourteen, with an MBA in Agri Business Management taking 30 students a year at the College of Agri Business Management.
On money, the undergraduate picture is the incomplete one. No semester fee schedule for the bachelor's degrees is published on the university's website or in the state counselling prospectus, and the undergraduate regulation says only that the semester and other fees shall be as prescribed by the Academic Council from time to time. Until the university publishes that schedule, the amount payable is whatever the college quotes at reporting, and the registrar's office is the place to confirm it. The stipend below is the published half of the same equation.
Postgraduate money is documented to the rupee. The university's counselling notice sets what is deposited on the day of admission, and it is a single payment rather than a per-semester schedule.
| Admission fee at counselling | Master's | Ph.D. |
|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS / BC | Rs 8503.00 | Rs 9203.00 |
| EBC | Rs 7003.00 | Rs 7203.00 |
| SC / ST | Rs 6703.00 | Rs 6803.00 |
Applying costs separately and earlier. The current prospectus prices the master's application at Rs. 1400/- and the doctoral one at Rs. 1600/-, halved to Rs 700 and Rs 800 for SC and ST candidates.
The MBA is the expensive degree here and the only one with a published four-semester schedule. Its brochure sets the Total 206481.00 programme fee, front-loaded at Rs 57703.00 in the first semester, with a Concession of rupees 4000 (Four thousand) per semester for SC and ST students. That schedule was published for the 2023-24 batch and the brochure itself warns the actual fee may vary at admission, so treat it as the order of magnitude rather than this year's invoice.
Admissions
There is no application form on this university's website for a bachelor's degree, and candidates who go looking for one lose weeks. The admission page carries one instruction and nothing else: Information regarding Admission through BCECE Board, Patna. The Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board runs the test, the merit list and the choice filling; the university receives the candidates the board allots.
Which BCECE stream you sit in decides which half of the seats you compete for. The board splits its share between the science-group candidates and the agriculture-group candidates, running BCECE (PCM / PCB / PCMB)-2026 50% BCECE (CBA / PCA / MBA / MCA)-2026 50% Online Counselling as two parallel exercises with separate portals. A candidate who took agriculture as a subject at 10+2 sits in the second group; one who took the standard physics, chemistry and biology combination sits in the first. Both routes reach the same lecture hall.
The 2026 cycle shows how the calendar runs. Rank cards came first, the board posted the Seat Matrix posting on website 13.07.2026, choice filling ran from 19 July to 25 July, the first allotment was published on 29.07.2026 and document verification followed within days. Seats left after that went to a mop-up round whose Document Verification and Admission (Mop-up Counselling) 07.09.2026 to 09.09.2026 closed the cycle. A candidate planning for next year should assume the same shape: rank card in late June, choices in July, admission by early September.
The remaining fifth of the undergraduate seats is allotted nationally through ICAR counselling, and the eligibility test there is narrower. ICAR accepts three subject combinations for this university, ABC, PCB, PCM, so a candidate whose 10+2 mix falls outside those three can only come through the state route.
Master's and doctoral entry is the university's own business. It runs a written test of its own, 200 multiple choice questions each of 0.5 marks over two hours with no negative marking. Applications for the current session opened on the Samarth portal on 29-May-2026, closed on 28 June, and the paper was held on 19.07.2026. One eligibility line rules out a large group of applicants at the door: Admission to Master Degree Programme is open for Domicile of Bihar only. Doctoral admission carries no such restriction and is open to all eligible candidates.
The MBA sits outside both systems. Its selection runs on scores from national management tests rather than any paper the university sets, and the prospectus records that admission in CABM is done on basis of scores/marks in CAT/XAT/CMAT/ICAR examinations.
Cutoff
For the undergraduate degrees there is no closing rank to quote, and the reason needs stating precisely, because BCECEB is not a board that withholds results as a rule. Its notice board carries round-by-round seat allotment result PDFs for the medical, dental, AYUSH and engineering counselling it runs. For the BCECE joint and agriculture groups it carries no equivalent file: the seat matrix and the counselling schedule are posted openly, the allotment order itself is downloaded from the candidate's own account on the board's counselling portal, and no institution-and-category table of last ranks for a Sabour, Dumraon or Kishanganj seat is published anywhere on the site. What the board did publish at the close of the 2025 cycle was a category-wise list of roll numbers called to the offline mop-up round for the agriculture group, which is a list of people, not a rank against a college. Any closing rank for Sabour circulating elsewhere has been reconstructed from what candidates reported, not published by the authority that allotted the seat.
The postgraduate entrance does publish a threshold, and it is a qualifying bar rather than a rank. The prospectus fixes it at 45% of the entrance marks for all categories except SC and ST, for whom it is 40%. Clearing that only puts you on the merit list; the seat then depends on where you sit in it.
How tight the list runs shows up in two separate cycles. For the 2025-26 session the university called candidates to counselling in rank bands over two days, 01 to 400 on the first and 401 to 828 on the second, against the 104 regular and 40 non-fellowship master's seats the same notice lists. A year later, the seat sheet the registrar issued after the first day of that year's counselling, dated 6th August, 2026, lists what survived one day of allotment across all six colleges and every one of the seventeen master's disciplines: a Total 1 0 0 1 0 0 row, which is two seats. A candidate ranked deep in the list should plan for the later rounds rather than the first.
Placements
The university files its placement record with the national ranking framework, and that return is the only complete count available. It separates the graduates who took a job from the much larger group who went on studying.
| Undergraduate batch | Graduated in stipulated time | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 159 | 2 | Rs 600000 | 88 |
| 2022-23 | 301 | 97 | Rs 660000 | 189 |
| 2023-24 | 303 | 109 | Rs 660000 | 149 |
| Postgraduate batch | Graduated in stipulated time | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 93 | 4 | Rs 720000 | 20 |
| 2022-23 | 93 | 48 | Rs 900000 | 37 |
| 2023-24 | 89 | 51 | Rs 900000 | 36 |
Campus recruitment at the bachelor's level is thin and recent: only 2 graduates of the 2021-22 batch were recorded as placed, against 109 two years later, so the placement function here is being built rather than being reported on. And the master's degree is where the money in this data is. Its median has held at 900000 for two years running, well above the bachelor's median, and in each of the last two years on that return roughly half of the master's cohort was placed against roughly a third of the undergraduate one.
The higher-studies column explains the rest. In every undergraduate year on that table, more graduates went into further study than into a job, and on the largest cohort the gap was 149 to 109. A candidate reading the placement percentage alone will misread this university, because at Sabour the master's degree, not the job offer, is the ordinary next step out of the bachelor's. The university runs a placement cell for the rest, headed by an Officer-in Charge, Placement Cell & Career Counselling Centre reachable at placementcellbau@gmail.com, and the cell's own page says its students are working in reputed MNCs, agricultural universities, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, state department of agriculture and NGOs.
Seat Matrix
The state board publishes the undergraduate seat matrix in full, category by category, and it reads better as arithmetic than as a list. Every agriculture college holds 100 seats. Twenty go to ICAR. The remaining eighty are split down the middle between the two BCECE stream groups, forty each, and it is those forty that a candidate is actually competing for. Which science combination qualifies for the joint half is set per college, not once for the university, and the state matrix names a different one for two of the nine rows.
| College and programme | Total seats | ICAR quota | Joint group | Agriculture group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour (Agriculture) | 100 | 20 | 40 (PCMB) | 40 |
| Mandan Bharti Agricultural College, Saharsa (Agriculture) | 100 | 20 | 40 (PCMB) | 40 |
| Veer Kunwar Singh College of Agriculture, Dumraon (Agriculture) | 100 | 20 | 40 (PCMB) | 40 |
| Bhola Paswan Shastri Agricultural College, Purnea (Agriculture) | 100 | 20 | 40 (PCMB) | 40 |
| Dr. Kalam Agricultural College, Kishanganj (Agriculture) | 100 | 20 | 40 (PCMB) | 40 |
| Nalanda College of Horticulture, Noorsarai (Horticulture) | 50 | 10 | 20 (PCMB) | 20 |
| College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Sabour | 60 | 0 | 30 (PCB) | 30 |
| College of Agricultural Engineering, Ara (Agricultural Engineering) | 60 | 0 | 30 (PCM) | 30 |
| Bihar Forestry College and Research Institute, Munger (Forestry) | 50 | 0 | 25 (PCMB) | 25 |
The agriculture-group half is scoped the same way. It reads CBA / PCA / MBA / MCA at the five agriculture colleges, at Noorsarai and at Munger, narrows to CBA / PCA at the biotechnology college and to MBA / MCA at the engineering one. A candidate who assumes one eligibility rule covers all nine choices will fill the form wrong.
Three rows of that table carry no ICAR entry at all. The biotechnology, agricultural engineering and forestry seats are filled entirely through the state test, so an out-of-state candidate has no route into them here.
The national share appears in ICAR's own brochure as a single university-level block rather than college by college, and the two documents agree: ICAR lists 100 B.Sc (Hons.) Agriculture seats for this university, broken into 46 unreserved, 24 OBC, 13 SC, 10 EWS and 7 ST places with 4 PwBD and 2 UPS seats applied across them, plus 10 horticulture seats. Twenty seats at each of five colleges is exactly the hundred ICAR names. That twenty per cent is also the whole difference between the two Bihar agricultural universities for an out-of-state applicant: ICAR's brochure fills 20% seats (100% seats at ICAR-NDRI Karnal, ICAR-IARI New Delhi, ICAR-IVRI Izatnagar, RLBCAU, Jhansi and Dr. RPCAU, Pusa), so at Pusa the national counselling allots every seat and at Sabour it allots one in five.
Beyond those sanctioned seats, 02 additional places on the agriculture course at the Sabour college are held for Jammu and Kashmir domicile candidates, a footnote in the state matrix that is easy to miss. They are not a state-quota concession: the university's own regulation records them as Two additional seats for the candidates of J&K state on merit basis through ICAR Entrance to be admitted at BAC, Sabour, so the route into them is the national test, not BCECE.
Rankings
The university is ranked in one national table and one only. It holds rank 36 with a score of 48.05 in the 2025 agriculture and allied sectors ranking, and appears in no other category.
| NIRF 2025, Agriculture and Allied Sectors | Value |
|---|---|
| Rank | 36 |
| Overall score | 48.05 |
| Teaching, learning and resources | 74.71 |
| Research and professional practice | 16.58 |
| Graduation outcomes | 65.30 |
| Outreach and inclusivity | 53.02 |
| Perception | 23.12 |
Teaching, learning and resources at 74.71 is a solid score built on faculty numbers, student strength and spending, the things an undergraduate meets every day. Research and professional practice at 16.58 is the weakest of the five by a distance and is what drags the overall figure down, because it counts publications, citations, patents and funded research per faculty member. Perception, at 23.12, is the second weakest, and reputation scores of that kind move slowly.
The distance between those two numbers, 74.71 against 16.58, is the shape of a university that teaches at scale and publishes very little, and it is the honest summary of what a candidate is buying here.
Where that lands the university nationally is a matter of counting the table. It publishes 40 ranks and tops out at a score of 89.23, so 36th with 48.05 sits near the bottom of the ranked field. Within Bihar it is the only state university ranked in agriculture at all; the other Bihar name on the list, the central university at Pusa in Samastipur, holds rank 14 on a different funding line, and the two are not interchangeable choices.
Departments
Ten constituent units carry the teaching, and they are registered at nine different addresses, which is the fact that matters most to a candidate filling BCECE choices.
| Constituent unit | Location |
|---|---|
| Bihar Agricultural College | Sabour, Bhagalpur |
| Mandan Bharti Agriculture College | Agwanpur, Saharsa |
| Veer Kunwar Singh College of Agriculture | Dumraon, Buxar |
| Bhola Paswan Shastri Agricultural College | Purnea |
| Dr. Kalam Agricultural College | Kishanganj |
| Nalanda College of Horticulture | Noorsarai, Nalanda |
| College of Agri Business Management | Patna (currently functioning at Sabour) |
| College of Agricultural Biotechnology | Sabour, Bhagalpur |
| College of Agricultural Engineering | Ara |
| Bihar Forestry College and Research Institute | Munger |
Postgraduate teaching is organised by discipline rather than by college, and it is concentrated at Sabour. The master's list runs to seventeen subjects, weighted towards soil science, agronomy, genetics and plant breeding, entomology and the two horticulture sciences; the smallest of them, Nematology and agricultural chemicals, take two students each and only as non-fellowship seats. Doctoral supervision covers fourteen subjects, and all but three of the doctoral seats sit at the Sabour college, the other three at Noorsarai.
Alongside the colleges sit 14 research stations and 22 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, spread over three agro-ecological zones in Bihar. Those kendras are not a teaching resource in the ordinary sense, but they are where a large part of the university's extension work with farmers happens, and where students on field assignments are placed.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The teaching estate at Sabour is the old college campus, and the university has layered newer facilities onto it rather than rebuilding. A Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning trains faculty in teaching technology, set up in collaboration with University of Illinois USA. An electronic media production centre built under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana is described as a modern Centre for open and distance learning with the use of e-learning, video conferencing and multimedia learning materials, which is a teaching resource rather than a studio a student would book time in.
Library spending gives a sense of scale that a photograph would not. The university's ranking return records capital expenditure of 13424303 rupees on the library in 2023-24, a similar figure the year before, against roughly half that in 2021-22. The libraries themselves are described as carrying services like E-access, CDROM, book bank, references, circulation, resource sharing, reprography, clipping at the headquarters and at the colleges.
Physical access is reported once, for the whole system, and that is the weakness of the answer rather than its content. Ramps or lifts, and adapted toilets, are recorded as reaching more than 80% of the buildings. Nine addresses are covered by that one figure, so a candidate with a mobility need has to put the question to the college they are choosing rather than to the university.
Hostel
How binding residence is depends on which seat you take. For the MBA the brochure is absolute: it is compulsory for the students to stay in the University/College Hostel. For everyone else the undergraduate regulation is permissive rather than compulsory, providing that the University Hostels shall be made available to all regular students of the constituent colleges.
What a room contains is specified. Every boarder is provided with a chair, a table and a cot and is answerable for their condition; bedding is not on that list. Allotment is not first come first served either, since the merit and seniority will be taken into consideration at the time of allotment of cubicles and dormitories, room changes need the superintendent's permission, and rooms must be vacated before the summer vacation.
The counselling notice is blunt about one category of postgraduate seat that carries no room at all: candidates admitted on non-fellowship and non-residential seats have to arrange their own accommodation near by the campus. That notice put 40 of the master's seats in that category against 104 regular ones, so a candidate accepting one is also accepting a rent bill in Sabour or Bhagalpur.
Faculty
The ranking return names 261 faculty members. The university's own account puts the wider figure at more than 500 researchers and educationist once the research stations and the kendras are counted in, and the gap between the two numbers is the share of this institution's staff who never stand in front of a class.
93 full-time doctoral students are on the rolls. The university awarded 19 doctorates in 2023-24, and 18 and 14 in the two years before that.
External research money has moved sharply in the same window. Sponsored projects went from 8 in 2021-22 to 182 and then 178, and the amount received in 2023-24 was 373137552 rupees from 11 funding agencies. None of that has reached the research score in the ranking table yet, which is measured over a longer window. A prospective research student should ask which of those projects sit in their own discipline, because a university total says nothing about where the money landed.

Contact & Location
Sabour is a short trip east of Bhagalpur, and the practical arrival point depends on how far you are coming from. The campus sits about 8 km east of Bhagalpur and the nearest railway station is Sabour, National Highway 80 runs through the town, and the university's own prospectus puts the airport at Patna roughly 230 kilometres away, which makes the train the sensible approach from anywhere outside Bihar.

Admission queries during the postgraduate cycle go to the registrar's office rather than to a college, and the current prospectus routes them to bauentranceexam@gmail.com. Undergraduate queries about allotment belong with BCECEB, not with the university, until the board has named you.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Agricultural education runs on two separate approvals, and this university holds both. Its current prospectus records accreditation as NAAC Grade A alongside ICAR Grade A, and the same pair is stated on the official admission portal, which describes the university as accredited with NAAC Grade "A" and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Grade "A".
The ICAR half is the one an agriculture student should check first, because it is what a postgraduate admissions office reads. This university's own master's rule requires that the candidate must possess the Bachelor Degree from ICAR's accredited College/recognized by ICAR or UGC affiliated Universities, so ICAR accreditation is one of two routes it accepts rather than the only one, and its doctoral rule applies the same test to the master's degree. Sabour's own degrees clear the ICAR test, which is what a student is buying alongside the teaching.
The statutory position is separate again and is settled. The university was specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956 in the Act that created it, and its earlier prospectus adds that it is an ISO 9001:2015 certified organisation, a quality-management certification rather than an academic one.
Aid
Scholarships
The undergraduate stipend is written into regulation rather than offered as a scheme, which is what makes it dependable. Chapter 4 of the university's undergraduate regulation awards the money to every student admitted through BCECE holding Bihar domicile in B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture/B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture/ B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry/ B. Tech (Biotechnology) / B. Tech (Agricultural Engineering), running for 8 semesters and never beyond the eighth. A further A sum of ₹ 6000 per year covers books.
It can stop. Payment ceases if a student fails to hold a grade point average of 5.0 out of 10 or attendance of 75% across a semester's courses, and it resumes in a later semester once both are met again. Families budgeting on it should treat it as conditional income rather than a grant.
A second, smaller award turns on household income. The merit-cum-means scholarship is open to Bihar residents whose parents' annual income of the parents must not exceed ₹ 1,00,000/-, certified by a block development officer or circle officer, and it requires an overall grade point average of 7.000 or better with no failed course. No student may hold more than one form of financial support at a time, so a household that qualifies for both chooses between them.
Candidates from outside Bihar are covered by a different body altogether, and the reason is the seat they occupy. ICAR funds a National Talent Scholarship of Rs.3000/- per month for students who take an ICAR quota seat in a state other than their own, paid through the university. Since the state stipend follows Bihar domicile and the national one follows an out-of-state ICAR seat, almost every undergraduate here falls under one scheme or the other, but nobody falls under both.

Student Reviews
No star rating for this university appears here. Nothing published about student experience at Sabour has been verified to a standard that would let us put a figure on it.
The questions worth asking instead are specific to how this university works. Ask which college your choice actually locks you into, because BCECE choice filling commits you to a named college in a named district for four years, not to Sabour by default. Ask, if you are offered a non-fellowship postgraduate seat, what accommodation near that campus costs. Ask a current student whether the monthly stipend has arrived on time and whether anyone in their batch lost it on attendance. And ask, in your own discipline, how many of the outgoing batch went into a job rather than into examination preparation, because the university's own filings say the second group is the larger one.
