In 2023-24, 237 students finished the four-year undergraduate degree at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, 72 of them were placed, and 163 went on to higher studies. The university's own ranking return records the same shape in each of the two years before that. A BCKV undergraduate seat is, in practice, a route into a master's degree and a competitive examination rather than into a recruiter's offer, and everything below reads differently once that is fixed: the fee charged per semester, the seat matrix published this year, and an admission process that puts no entrance test between a school leaver and the two B.Sc. degrees on the state merit route.

Overview

BCKV is a smaller university today than its name suggests, because two other universities were carved out of it. It was established in 1974 with its headquarters at Mohanpur in Nadia district, opening with two constituent faculties, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, and adding a North Bengal campus at Pundibari in Cooch Behar in 1980. The veterinary side left in 1995, when the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences was created by separating out that faculty, and the North Bengal campus left in 2001 with the establishment of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, at which point the Faculty of Horticulture and the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering were added alongside the Faculty of Agriculture that remained. Two colleges of agriculture opened later as extended campuses, at Burdwan in 2014 and Bankura in 2015, teaching undergraduate agriculture only.

That history is worth carrying into counselling, because the three names still get mixed up. West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences and Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya run their own admissions and are not campuses of this university. The spelling moves too: the university writes itself Viswavidyalaya, while the national ranking framework and the higher education survey both write Vishwavidyalaya, so a search that returns nothing under one spelling will return plenty under the other.

What the university produces reaches the state's fields under its own prefix, which is a fair guide to what it teaches. Its register of released varieties records Bidhan Rice bean-3 in 2016, the jute variety Kisan Pat in 2017, the jute variety Sweta in 2018, and a cluster in 2019 that runs Bidhan Khesari-1 in grasspea, Bidhan Suruchi in rice, Bidhan Chilli-4, Bidhan Super in brinjal, the marigolds Bidhan Basanti and Bidhan Gold, and Trombay Bidhan Mustard-204. Jute, grasspea, betelvine and taro appear on that list because they are what Nadia and the districts around it actually grow.

Courses & Fees

Three undergraduate degrees, all of eight semesters, and which one you take decides where you sit for it. The university's programme table places B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture at Mohanpur and at both extended campuses, B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture at Mohanpur only, and B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering at Mohanpur only. Neither extended campus carries a postgraduate or doctoral curriculum, so a Burdwan or Bankura offer is an undergraduate offer and nothing beyond it.

The recurring cost is published head by head, and it is low. The semester fee break-up in the university's 2026-27 admission notification comes to Rs 12,800 a semester for a hosteller and Rs 11,000 for a day scholar.

Hostel establishment chargeRs 600Nil
Electric chargeRs 600Nil

A one-time charge sits on top of the first semester. The same notification puts it at Rs 8,000 as the admission fee, Rs 500 as a library deposit and Rs 100 each for the identity card and the library card, with a registration fee listed in the same block and a refundable hostel security deposit of Rs 3,000 returned only after the course is completed. Candidates entering on the ICAR quota pay almost none of that at the university counter, because Rs 10,000 has already gone to ICAR and only Rs 200 is left to settle.

Agricultural engineering is billed on its own schedule and it is front-loaded. The institute profile BCKV files with the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board puts the total payable including tuition at Rs 27,500 for the first semester and Rs 12,800 for each of the seven that follow. That document carries the board's own disclaimer that the information is supplied by the institute and not verified by the board, so read it as the university's figure rather than a regulator's.

Admissions

Entry to the two B.Sc. (Hons.) degrees turns on school marks, and no entrance examination stands in the way. The 2026-27 undergraduate notification restricts applications to candidates who passed the Higher Secondary examination in 2026 or 2025, sets a minimum age of 16 years in line with ICAR guidance, and asks for at least 65% in aggregate across English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology from General, OBC, EWS and sports-quota candidates, with a lower floor for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Vocational-stream candidates from the state technical education board qualify on a different subject combination, English and biology with physics or chemistry plus two listed agriculture or horticulture vocational subjects.

One application covers everything on the merit-list route. The notification records that the process is entirely online, that a single form covers B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture at all three campuses and B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture at Mohanpur, and that counselling and provisional admission are conducted online with only the final and mop-up rounds held offline. Merit lists come out board by board, one set for the West Bengal council, one for other boards and one for the vocational stream, with separate category lists inside each.

The ICAR quota is a different competition, and the university does not run it. Those seats are filled through the All India Entrance Examination, CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026, and candidates entering on the ICAR and Hill quotas are told in writing that upgradation will not be allowed to them, so the first seat allotted is the seat taken.

B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering never touches that merit list. BCKV is listed in the university group on the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board's roll of participating institutions, which places its first-year engineering seats inside the board's counselling rather than the university's own lists, and the university separately notifies counselling for third-semester lateral entry through JELET. Neither JEE Main nor NEET has any part in admission to this university.

Master's and doctoral admission goes back offline. The university's admission notices for the previous session record successive rounds of offline counselling for both the master's and doctoral programmes, with ICAR-quota candidates reporting in person at Mohanpur, so a postgraduate applicant should budget for the journey rather than expect to accept a seat from a browser.

Cutoff

There is no rank cutoff to quote for the B.Sc. degrees, and that is a fact about how BCKV admits rather than a hole in the record. Selection runs on Higher Secondary marks, merit lists are released as name-by-name documents split by board and category, and after every phase the university publishes a fresh vacant seat matrix and allocation list instead of a closing-mark table.

How far down the order those phases reach is visible in the vacancies. After three phases of online admission for 2026-27 the university published 57 seats still vacant across the three agriculture campuses, a further block of vacancies in horticulture at Mohanpur and two seats under the sports quota. Horticulture is the line to watch there, because its vacancy list after three phases was longer than half of what that course offers outside the ICAR quota, while agriculture had filled the larger part of its own. The question to ask at BCKV counselling is therefore not what last year closed at, but which of the two degrees and which of the three campuses are still open by the time your name comes up.

For B.Tech the cutoff sits outside BCKV altogether. Opening and closing ranks for its agricultural engineering seats are produced in the state board's counselling rounds and published by that board, not by the university, and BCKV's own admission notices carry schedules rather than rank data. No closing rank is stated here, because none appears on either the university's notices or the institute profile it files with the board.

Placements

The placement figure at this university only makes sense next to the higher-studies figure. In its 2025 ranking return BCKV reports that of 237 undergraduates who finished in the minimum stipulated time in 2023-24, 72 were placed at a median of Rs 4,80,000 while 163 were selected for higher studies. That is not a one-year quirk: the same return shows 236 graduating, 83 placed at Rs 4,70,000 and 149 continuing in 2022-23, and 249 graduating, 80 placed at Rs 4,50,000 and 163 continuing in 2021-22.

The master's cohort turns that around and is paid better for it. The return records 152 of 263 postgraduates placed in 2021-22 at a median of Rs 6,73,000, 87 of 193 in 2022-23 at Rs 6,73,500, and 58 of 123 in 2023-24 at Rs 6,95,000, so close to half of each master's cohort takes a job, at a median well clear of the undergraduate one. Anyone weighing four years here should read the two tables as one sequence rather than as alternatives.

Agricultural engineering reports its campus placement separately and modestly. The institute profile filed with the state entrance board records 20% of students placed through campus interview in 2024, 25% in 2023 and 10% in 2022, and names the destinations as agro-based industry, tractor and farm machinery makers, irrigation, dairy and food processing, aquaculture, government research and training centres, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and other ICAR institutes, the Food Corporation of India, the Tea Board of India, nationalised banks and NGOs.

One thing to know before comparing BCKV with a private campus that leads on recruiters: the university's own placement cell page publishes no placement statistics whatsoever. It sets out what a placement cell should do, lists the resources one would need to run it, and names attracting reputable companies and competition from other institutions among its own challenges. That reads as a cell being built rather than one with a record to report.

Seat Matrix

Undergraduate seats arrive in three blocks, not two, and reading only the first and the last is how the arithmetic stops adding up. The 2026-27 seat matrix counts 205 seats for B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture across Mohanpur, Burdwan Sadar and Susunia in the unreserved and reserved columns and 33 for B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture at Mohanpur, then a separately counted EWS block for each course, then 37 and 9 seats in the ICAR quota, which is how the grand totals reach 262 and 45.

2026-27 undergraduate seatsAgricultureHorticulture
Unreserved and reserved columns20533
ICAR quota seats379
Grand total, EWS block included26245

Four small blocks sit outside those columns and each is easy to miss when scanning the table. The notification reserves 2 seats in B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture at Mohanpur for Hill Tribe candidates recommended by the GTA in Darjeeling, 2 for Jammu and Kashmir students under the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme, 2 under the sports category, and 5 for foreign students split as 3 in agriculture, 1 in horticulture and 1 in agricultural engineering through ICCR or ICAR.

Sanctioned intake reported to the ranking framework is a wider count, covering every four-year undergraduate programme rather than one year's admission matrix. It stood at 288 in both 2023-24 and 2022-23, against 269 in 2021-22 and 268 in 2020-21, with 192 sanctioned for the two-year postgraduate programmes in 2023-24. Agricultural engineering is the narrowest door of the three: its approved intake is 32, taught by 10 full-time faculty members.

Rankings

BCKV holds one national rank and it belongs to the discipline the university was built for. NIRF 2025 records the university under IR-G-U-0568 at rank 16 in agriculture and allied sectors, on a total of 57.64. No other 2025 category table carries it at all, so the agriculture list is the only place a national ranking for BCKV can honestly be read, and dropping the university into an all-purpose league compares it against a field it never entered.

NIRF 2025 agriculture parameterScore
Graduation Outcomes81.65
Teaching, Learning and Resources76.00
Perception40.90
Outreach and Inclusivity36.45
Research and Professional Practice35.94

Graduation outcomes at 81.65 is the standout, and it agrees with the placement filing rather than contradicting it: that parameter rewards degrees finished in the minimum time and students going on to further study, which is what these cohorts do, while research and professional practice at 35.94 is the drag on the total.

The score that jars is outreach and inclusivity at 36.45. The university's own campus overview states its purpose as providing facilities for the study of agriculture, horticulture and agricultural engineering and undertaking educational and extension programmes in agriculture among the rural clientele base, keeping in view the requirements of the state. Reaching rural clientele is the job description here, and the parameter that measures reach and access is one of the two lowest on its card.

Departments

A BCKV degree belongs to a faculty, and the faculty decides how many departments sit behind it. The Faculty of Agriculture runs sixteen departments, from agronomy, genetics and plant breeding, plant pathology and entomology through to agricultural economics, extension, statistics, meteorology and animal science. Its page sets out how the degree is shaped: a specialised subject alongside a job-oriented course in the sixth and seventh semesters, then the eighth given over to Rural Agricultural Work Experience. Master's students there carry at least 40 credits and submit a thesis, and the faculty normally admits 170 postgraduate students a year.

Horticulture is the newest of the three and the most physically separated. The faculty was established in 1996 with five departments, floriculture and landscaping, fruit science, post-harvest technology, plantation spices medicinal and aromatic crops, and vegetable science. Its undergraduate classes are held at Jagulia rather than on the main campus, and its 150 acre Horticultural Research Station at Mondouri carries the practical and project work for all five departments at master's and doctoral level.

The Faculty of Agricultural Engineering carries four departments, farm machinery and power, food engineering, post-harvest engineering, and soil and water engineering, and those four are also the master's specialisations available there.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The library is the part of the estate the university argues for hardest. Its central library occupies a four-storey building on the Mohanpur campus, inaugurated in its present building in 1980, with 5557 square metres of floor space against a planned 7342, and the university describes it as the largest agricultural library in eastern India. Bound journals and the bindery sit on the ground floor, the lending counter, reading room and research cubicles on the first, and current journals, theses and dissertations on the second.

Capital spending backs the benches rather than the shelves, by roughly nine to one. The academic capital heads for 2023-24 read Rs 42,27,532 on new equipment for laboratories against Rs 4,50,130 on the library, the laboratory head having climbed from Rs 27,13,525 two years earlier while the library head fell from Rs 5,50,250. For a student choosing between a laboratory-heavy specialisation and a reading-heavy one, that pair of lines says more than the library's floor area does.

Engineering facilities are counted room by room in the profile the university files with the state board, which is the only place they appear as numbers. It records 8 classrooms and 1 e-classroom, 9 laboratories, a workshop, a common computing centre with 40 computers, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, and a library holding of 3000 books across 750 titles. Accessibility at BCKV comes to two yeses and a no, and the no is the one that shapes a day on a rural campus. The return records walking aids, wheelchairs and transport between buildings as provided and ramps or lifts in the over-80% band, then marks specially designed toilets for handicapped students not available. A band is not a count and a no is a no, so a student who needs step-free access should ask about the particular faculty building and the particular hostel before accepting a seat.

Teaching also draws on an estate that runs well past Mohanpur. Regional research stations at Jhargram, Kakdwip and Gayeshpur, substations at Raghunathpur, Sekhampur and Chakdah, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras in Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia and Purba Medinipur are all part of the university, which is why field work here can mean a posting rather than a walk across the lawn.

Hostel

Which hall you get depends on your degree, your gender and, at BCKV, your town. The list runs to 17 hostels: Raman and Jagadish Abas for undergraduate men at Mohanpur, Vidyasagar and Rabindra Abas for postgraduate men, Matangini Abas for undergraduate women, Nivedita Abas for postgraduate women, LH-IV, Mahesweta and Borlauge Abas for doctoral women and Nazrul Abas for doctoral men, Netaji and Aurobinda Abas for doctoral men at Kalyani, Jhumur and Basi Sen Abas at Bankura, and Bidhan, Vivek and Maitre Abas at Burdwan, each under a named provost, with the mess in every hall run by a students' committee answering to that provost. Two things follow from that list and neither is obvious from the prospectus: the extended campuses have residences of their own, and doctoral men can be housed at Kalyani rather than on the Mohanpur campus.

Hostel charges are folded into the semester fee rather than billed apart, at Rs 600 each per semester for seat rent, hostel establishment and electricity, plus the refundable security deposit of Rs 3,000, which accounts for the entire gap between the hosteller and day-scholar totals in the fee table above.

The regulations are stricter than most campuses publish, and they are worth reading before accepting a seat rather than after. The hostel rules bar boarders from remaining outside the hostel after 8 p.m., set an earlier evening deadline for the women's halls that shifts between the winter and summer months, require a girl student to take written permission from the provost before leaving for anything other than academic work and to sign a movement register, make mess membership compulsory for every boarder with no separate cooking allowed, prohibit heaters and irons in rooms, and close both hostel and mess during the summer recess and the puja vacation.

Capacity is published only for the engineering side, where the institute profile counts 190 seats in the boys' hostel and 40 in the girls'. Nothing hall by hall is published for the agriculture and horticulture cohorts, and the university's own notification makes hostel admission conditional on the availability of a hostel seat, so settle that question at physical verification rather than assume it.

Faculty

The teaching headcount lives in the filings rather than on the university's own pages, and the two filings answer different questions. The 2025 ranking return enters 205 faculty members in its faculty details for the university as a whole, with no split by faculty; the state entrance board profile carries the only departmental figure, 10 full-time faculty against an approved intake of 32 in agricultural engineering.

What those staff are working on is easier to check than how many there are. The 2025 ranking return records 323 full-time doctoral students on the rolls and 106 doctorates awarded in 2023-24, against 112 the previous year and 69 the year before that.

Sponsored research receivedRs 9,22,25,092

The consultancy line is the one that separates a state agricultural university from a purely academic department. 92 paid projects for 36 client organisations in a single year is testing, advisory and technology work for state agencies and industry, and it is the kind of work a master's or doctoral student ends up inside. Ask the department you are applying to which of those projects it holds, because the campus total says nothing about any one discipline.

Notable Alumni

No list of distinguished graduates is published by this university, and none is assembled here from anywhere else. There is a BCKV Alumni Association based in the administrative building at Mohanpur, and its page does two useful things: it names Prof. S. B. Chattopadhyay as the founder Vice-Chancellor of BCKV, and it records that the association meets medical expenses for members in need, alongside reunions held since 2001 with the third in 2015 and a seminar titled Leading Bengal in Agriculture. What it does not carry is a roll of names, so no roll of names appears here.

Reaching Mohanpur is simple once you know which stop to ask for. The notification's route note gives the nearest railway station as Kanchrapara on the Sealdah to Krishnagar main line of Eastern Railway, with buses or autos to the BCKV main gate, and the nearest highway stop as Barajaguli on National Highway 34, a few minutes from the gate by auto or toto. The alumni association's page adds the distances, putting the railhead about 11 km away and Kolkata airport roughly 50 km away by the same highway. Physical verification for admitted candidates is held at the convocation hall in the administrative building on the Mohanpur campus.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

BCKV's accreditation is granted programme by programme, and ICAR is what grants it. The university publishes its ICAR-accredited programmes under a 2022 accreditation, covering all three undergraduate degrees, master's programmes in disciplines running from agricultural chemicals, economics and statistics to fruit science, vegetable science and farm machinery, and doctoral programmes across the same three faculties, each listed with its own self-study report.

The engineering degree carries a second approval on top of that. The Faculty of Agricultural Engineering page offers for download a mandatory disclosure by a university running AICTE-approved degree engineering programmes, which is the approval that governs a B.Tech seat wherever it is taught.

There is no NAAC grade to report. The IQAC link carried on the university's own homepage leads to a page that does not exist, and no grade, cycle or assessment date is published anywhere on bckv.edu.in. Where a listing site displays a NAAC grade for BCKV, it is not coming from the university, and nothing of that kind is repeated here.

Scholarships

BCKV lists twelve funded routes for undergraduates, and nearly all of them pay a monthly stipend rather than waive a fee. The university's undergraduate scholarship table carries a University Scholarship of Rs 1,000 a month for the topper in each semester, ICAR's National Talent Scholarship at Rs 2,000 a month for students studying in an agricultural university outside their home state, ICAR's Merit-cum-Means award at Rs 500 a month for students below a stated parental income ceiling, and ICAR's post-matric scholarship for SC and ST students at Rs 300 a month with an annual grant of Rs 750.

State and central schemes carry the larger amounts on the same table. It lists Kanyashree K2 as a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 for unmarried girl students under the scheme's family income ceiling, the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means scholarship at Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 a month for West Bengal domiciled students with at least 75% in the 10+2 examination, the OASIS scholarship for SC and ST students at Rs 1,200 a month for hostellers and Rs 550 for day scholars, and the central sector scholarship at Rs 1,000 a month for ten months for students above 80% in the 10+2 examination, with the minorities post-matric scholarship at Rs 3,000 a year, the Sitaram Jindal Foundation award at Rs 800 a month and the Beedi Workers Welfare Fund at Rs 15,000 a year and the disability post-matric scheme making up the rest.

Now set that table beside the ranking return, because the two answer the same question differently. Not one of the 452 socially challenged undergraduates BCKV counts among its 1054 on roll is recorded as receiving full tuition fee reimbursement from any source at all, government, institutional or private, and the postgraduate row reads the same way at 126 of 326. That is consistent with the scholarship table rather than a contradiction of it: what BCKV administers is stipends and one-time grants, and none of them is a tuition waiver. Budget for the full semester fee and treat any award as income against it.

Voices

Student Reviews

A single score for BCKV would be averaging four experiences that have little to do with each other. A horticulture student at Mohanpur, an agriculture student at Susunia in Bankura, an agricultural engineering student who arrived through the state entrance board and an ICAR-quota entrant living several states from home are under different faculties, different admission rules and different hostel provosts, and no methodical survey of any of those four groups exists in public. So there is no rating here.

The compensation is that BCKV writes down more about daily life than most campuses do, and the written rules are worth reading before the reviews. The hostel regulations, the seasonal evening deadline for the women's halls and the closure of hostel and mess during the recess are all quoted above from the university's own pages. Two things they do not answer, and a current student can: whether a hostel seat was actually available to first years at your campus last session, and which sixth-semester specialisations ran in the last two batches, because that choice, rather than the degree title, decides what you come out qualified in.
