Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (deemed To Be University)
Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth is not one college but a federation of them, and the NIRF 2025 university table catches both sides of that. It ranks 67th, with an outreach and inclusivity score beaten by only one university in India, and a research score of 15.24 that sits near the bottom of the hundred universities in that table. The A++ grade printed across its website expires on 20-12-2026. Which of its colleges you name in your choice list decides most of the rest, because only three of them admit on NEET at all and those three do not fill at the same level.
Overview
The university was assembled around a medical college that already existed rather than laid out as a campus from scratch. Sri Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust was founded in 1996 and the SBV trust followed in 2007, per the university's genesis page; the Ministry of Human Resource Development then declared Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, in the de novo category and provisionally for five years subject to annual review, in the gazette notification it publishes. Only the medical college at Pillaiyarkuppam was inside that first declaration. The dental and nursing colleges came in afterwards, and students already enrolled in them kept taking Pondicherry University degrees until the changeover year.
One line in that same notification still governs the finances a student meets. Neither the Government of India nor the UGC provides plan or non-plan grant-in-aid to Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth or to any of its constituent units, so every rupee the place spends comes from fees, hospital income and grants it wins.
What the university is today is a set of colleges, not departments. Its mandatory disclosure lists two medical colleges, one dental college, two nursing colleges, and schools of pharmacy, physiotherapy, allied and healthcare sciences and biomedical sciences, alongside institutes for health professions education, salutogenesis and advanced research. They sit on three campuses: the headquarters at Pillaiyarkuppam near Puducherry, the Chennai campus at Ammapettai in Kancheepuram district, and the newest at Karaikal, whose admission listing currently covers allied health, pharmacy and physiotherapy only.
Courses & Fees
Everything SBV teaches is health science, and the ladder runs from a bachelor's in dialysis or urology technology up to DM and MCh super specialties. Between those ends sit MBBS and BDS, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy degrees, MD, MS and MDS residencies, an MBA and an MPH under the management and public health faculties, a master's in health professions education, and doctoral programmes across medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy, as the programmes list sets out.
Fees are where the university's two halves part company. For the courses filled by its own entrance test, SBV has published rate sheets on its own site; for the ones filled by central counselling, it has not.
| Programme | Annual tuition the university publishes | Sheet's stated year |
|---|---|---|
| B.Sc Nursing, Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College | Rs 1,50,000 | 2018-19 |
| Post Basic B.Sc Nursing | Rs 40,000 | 2018-19 |
| M.Sc Nursing | Rs 50,000 | 2018-19 |
| M.Sc (Medical), microbiology or biochemistry | Rs 1,50,000 | 2018-19 |
| Allied health B.Sc programmes | Rs 30,000 to Rs 75,000 | 2018-19 |
| PhD, full time or part time | Rs 50,000 | batches joining from 2018 |
Those sheets are old, and the university reserves the right to revise them. Read them as the last figures SBV was willing to state in public rather than as a quote for your year, and note the extras the doctoral sheet does put a price on: Rs 5,000 to apply, Rs 10,000 per paper at examination, Rs 30,000 to submit the thesis, and Rs 20,000 for every three months of extension beyond the normal term.
Neither of those sheets reaches MBBS or BDS, and nothing else on the university's site does either. The dental college does link a fee file from its BDS admission page, but it sits on Google Drive as a scanned document whose figures are not in selectable text, which is not the same as a rate published on the college's own pages. Two rules in the university prospectus are worth having in writing before you accept an allotment, because they cut in opposite directions: the tuition accepted at admission holds for the whole course, so an SBV seat carries no annual escalation clause, and a candidate admitted under the NRI quota pays in US dollars for every year of it.
Admissions
There are two doors into this university and they have nothing in common. Three constituent colleges admit only on NEET through the Medical Counselling Committee: MGMCRI and Shri Sathya Sai Medical College for MBBS, MD and MS, MGMCRI again for the DM and MCh programmes, and Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences for BDS and MDS. Everything else, which is the longer half of the programme list by a distance, is filled by SBV's own online entrance test, SBVDUCET: nursing, allied health, pharmacy, physiotherapy, biomedical sciences, the MBA, the MPH, the PG diplomas and the doctoral programmes, per the admission notification.
On the NEET side the university's own rules say plainly that it cannot admit or cancel a seat independently and that candidates must follow MCC and DGHS procedure, in the prospectus. The practical consequence is that the campus admission office you speak to has no discretion over your seat and no useful answer about your chances; the only file that decides is MCC's.
Two residency rules also bind, and they change what the year costs. Undergraduates from outside Puducherry must live in the hostel, which the prospectus puts on safety grounds, and postgraduates on clinical courses must live in it so they can be reached for emergencies. Budget for hostel and mess as a fixed cost rather than an option, whichever campus you land on.
Cutoff
A deemed university has no cutoff of its own to publish, and SBV publishes none. Every seat at all three of its NEET colleges is categorised open in MCC's seat matrix for round 1 of NEET-UG 2026, so no SC, ST, OBC or EWS closing rank exists here at all, only a merit line per college with a non-resident line beside it at the two medical colleges.
The line that behaves like a cutoff is the last All India Rank allotted a seat, and it appears only once a round has closed, in the final allotment result for round 1 of UG counselling 2026 and the equivalent files the Medical Counselling Committee issues after every later round. Search it by college name rather than by the university's, because SBV's own name never appears in it: the rows read Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute and Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, carrying the institute codes MCC assigns them in the seat matrix, 200379, 200390 and 200378 respectively.
Read that way, the round 1 result settles a question the shared university name hides. The colleges did not close anywhere near each other. The Puducherry medical college finished its merit list well above the rank at which the Chennai one was still filling, so a rank that misses the first can still reach the second. The Puducherry dental seats opened at a stronger rank than the Chennai medical seats rather than a weaker one, which reverses the order most candidates assume between a BDS seat and an MBBS one. Both non-resident pools barely moved. Put the three colleges in your choice list as three separate decisions, because that is how the counselling engine treats them.
None of that is a forecast. It describes one round of one cycle, and surrenders, later rounds and the stray vacancy round move every line in it, so the file to open is always the one for your own admission year.
Placements
SBV files placement returns for the whole university, split by how long a programme runs rather than by college, and the spread between those bands is wide.
| Programme band, 2023-24 | Graduated on time | Placed | Median salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, three years | 192 | 190 | Rs 7,10,000 |
| Undergraduate, four years | 369 | 360 | Rs 10,75,000 |
| Undergraduate, five years | 390 | 385 | Rs 15,10,000 |
| Postgraduate, two years | 44 | 44 | Rs 12,50,000 |
| Postgraduate, three years | 237 | 225 | Rs 54,20,000 |
The five-year band, whose sanctioned intake of 500 is the two medical colleges' MBBS seats added together, has climbed steeply across three cohorts: Rs 7,52,000 for the 2021-22 leavers, Rs 14,95,500 for 2022-23 and Rs 15,10,000 for 2023-24, in the same filing. The three-year postgraduate row is the one to handle carefully. The medical college's separate return, filed in the same ranking exercise, reports a median of Rs 19,10,000 for its own 2023-24 postgraduate cohort in its NIRF 2025 data submission, and those two figures cover overlapping groups of residents. Both are the institution's own, but they cannot be quoted as the same thing, so name the return whenever you use one.
Seat Matrix
Every NEET seat the university holds appears in one MCC file, and there are only three colleges in it.
| Constituent college, MCC code | Programme | Quota | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (200379) | MBBS | Self-financed merit | 235 |
| Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (200379) | MBBS | Non-resident Indian | 15 |
| Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute (200390) | MBBS | Self-financed merit | 240 |
| Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute (200390) | MBBS | Non-resident Indian | 10 |
| Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (200378) | BDS | Self-financed merit | 100 |
Only the medical colleges carry a non-resident row; the dental seats go out as a single merit block. Away from NEET, the sanctioned intake the university reported to the ranking framework shows where it has been growing and where it has cut. Its five-year undergraduate sanction has held at 500 for three years and its four-year sanction at 400, while the three-year undergraduate sanction fell from 192 in 2021-22 to 90 and then 98, and a two-year postgraduate intake that did not exist in 2021-22 stood at 125 by 2023-24, in the NIRF 2025 data submission. Three-year postgraduate sanction rose across the same period, from 260 to 282 to 288.
Rankings
Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth appears in exactly one NIRF 2025 table, and it is the university one, where it holds rank 67 with an overall score of 50.46 in the 2025 university ranking. The parameter scores behind that are unusually far apart.
| NIRF 2025 university parameter | SBV score |
|---|---|
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 82.94 |
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 73.98 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 61.88 |
| Perception | 30.28 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 15.24 |
Start at the top, because that row is close to the best in the country. Among the hundred universities in the 2025 table, only Jamia Millia Islamia beats SBV on outreach and inclusivity, and it beats it by less than a point at 83.83. The parameter rewards a student body drawn from many regions and social groups, and SBV's enrolment supplies the reason: of 2,297 students in its five-year undergraduate programmes, 76 come from within the union territory and 2,201 from other states, with a further 103 international students sitting in the three-year postgraduate programmes, in its data submission.
The research row is the opposite case, and it is the reason the overall rank sits where it does rather than higher. A score of 15.24 in the 2025 table puts SBV in the bottom tenth on research and professional practice, which weighs publications, citations, patents and funded projects. It is moving, though. The NIRF 2024 university table put the university at rank 68 with an overall score of 49.14 and a research score of 12.15, so a single year took it from 68 to 67 and its research score from 12.15 to 15.24.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The clearest signal of where money has gone is the library line, which is now close to five times what it was two years earlier. Library capital spending ran to Rs 3,72,12,888 in 2021-22, Rs 10,47,98,681 in 2022-23 and Rs 18,53,89,456 in 2023-24, with another Rs 20,65,45,876 on new laboratory equipment in the last of those years, in the NIRF 2025 data submission.
Clinical facilities are the point of the place. The Pondicherry and Chennai campuses each carry a teaching hospital, and around them the university runs urban health centres, referral clinics, rural health centres and peripheral primary health centres, per its prospectus. A medical simulation centre recognised as an international training centre by the American Heart Association and a cadaver laboratory sit alongside them, as the university's profile page describes. Hostels are separate for men and women and for undergraduates and postgraduates, air conditioned, with reading halls, a gym and grounds for football, hockey, cricket, volleyball, basketball and lawn tennis, in the prospectus rules that also make the hostel compulsory for most students.
The sustainability part of the same NIRF return is worth a look for one answer in particular: alongside solar panels, SBV declares wind turbines installed on the campus itself rather than power bought from a grid supplier. The kitchen answers fit a campus that feeds a hospital as well as a college, with composting and food donation rather than disposal, and single-use plastic items are banned outright.
Hostel
Faculty
The university entered 411 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 submission, and that total is the weakest guide to what you would actually meet, because it pools a medical faculty in Puducherry with a nursing faculty in Chennai and a pharmacy faculty in Karaikal. Ask instead for the department list of the one college you would join.
Doctoral supervision is the part that has changed fastest. SBV had 331 full-time and 139 part-time research scholars on its rolls to 2023-24, and its award record climbed from none full-time and two part-time doctorates in 2021-22 to 10 and 8 the next year and 20 and 15 in 2023-24, in the same filing. Two rules in the prospectus sit behind some of that output: a postgraduate here is expected to publish a paper each academic year in an indexed journal, and a dissertation is to be published or accepted for publication before the final examinations.
Funded research tells a narrower story than the totals suggest. Sponsored projects were worth Rs 14,61,13,100 from 51 agencies in 2021-22 and Rs 17,45,35,000 from 23 agencies in 2023-24, and consultancy added Rs 11,40,49,666 from 41 projects for 39 client organisations in that last year, in the NIRF 2025 submission. The money grew while the number of funders more than halved, and a base that narrow is worth asking about if you are choosing a department for research rather than for clinical work.
One quirk shows up on the university's faculty roster page. A substantial block of its adjunct appointments is held by staff of a single engineering college in Pondicherry, drawn from that college's physics, chemistry, mathematics, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, biomedical engineering and management departments, and almost all of them are attached to the School of Allied Health Sciences. If you are choosing an allied health degree here, part of your basic-science teaching is contracted in from outside the health campus, and it is fair to ask how much.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The A++ grade quoted everywhere on this campus has a date on it, and the date is close. NAAC accredited Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth at a CGPA of 3.58 with validity running from 21-12-2021 to 20-12-2026, an improvement on the 3.11 it held from 16-11-2015 to 15-11-2020, per the university's NIRF 2025 data submission. Anyone joining a course longer than a year is enrolling into a re-accreditation cycle, and the honest question to put to the admission office is where that reassessment stands, not whether the badge exists.
What SBV does with the assessment afterwards is unusually open. Its NAAC page carries the peer team report, the metric-wise score report and the institutional grade sheet, which is the paperwork behind the letter rather than the letter. Read together they show which criteria the grade was earned on and which held it back, and that is a far better brief for asking the admission office where the reassessment stands than the badge itself is.
Course recognition sits elsewhere, with the statutory councils rather than with NAAC. The deemed-university notification made SBV's degrees conditional on the relevant council's norms for each college, naming the dental and nursing councils among them, and the university states on its profile page that its regulatory programmes are recognised by the respective statutory councils. On the clinical side the teaching hospitals on both campuses carry NABH accreditation and their laboratories carry NABL, per that same page, and the university's ranking and accreditation page records a third-cycle NABH nursing excellence certification for the Pondicherry hospital.
Aid
Scholarships
The fee-support picture at SBV is blunt, and it is set out in the university's own return. Counting only its economically backward and socially challenged students, the table below shows who ended up paying nothing: government reimbursement barely reaches this campus, and institutional funds and private bodies carry nearly all of it.
| Programme band | Full tuition reimbursed by state or central government | By institution funds | By private bodies | Not fully reimbursed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, three years | 15 | 228 | 80 | 57 |
| Undergraduate, four years | 111 | 796 | 265 | 155 |
| Undergraduate, five years | 0 | 749 | 580 | 217 |
| Postgraduate, two years | 0 | 84 | 28 | 28 |
| Postgraduate, three years | 4 | 214 | 185 | 72 |
The five-year row is the one an MBBS or BDS candidate should sit with. Of the 1,546 socially challenged students in that band, not one had full tuition reimbursed by any government, while 749 were carried by the university's own funds and 580 by private bodies, in the same filing. Whatever state scheme you are counting on, get its position on a deemed-university seat in writing from the scheme's own office before you accept an allotment.
Inside the university, aid runs through a scholarship committee that awards institutional scholarships, freeships and fee waivers on socio-economic status and merit, and it also points students at outside schemes, per its committee page. That page publishes lists of students who received government scholarships, but the most recent list is for 2019-20. The Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for college and university students is the one central scheme SBV names on its scholarships page, and it routes applications through the Registrar's office rather than a college desk.

Student Reviews
No rating is offered here, because Expertie has collected none for this university and the aggregator averages that fill the gap come from businesses paid to route applicants somewhere. Two arm's-length assessments do exist. The first is NIRF's perception parameter, where SBV scores 30.28 in the 2025 university table. Built from what academics, employers and the public say when surveyed, it sits far below the same table's teaching and outreach scores for SBV, which is the distance between doing the work and being known for it.
The second is the NAAC file already described, and it rewards opening. Beyond both, the question has to be asked one campus at a time. A student at Ammapettai in Kancheepuram district and a student at Pillaiyarkuppam outside Puducherry hold the same degree certificate but entered on different ranks, train in different hospitals and eat in different messes, so a review of "SBV" that does not say which campus it is describing is telling you about a place that does not exist.

Nothing is shown here yet. A university spread across Pillaiyarkuppam, Ammapettai and Karaikal cannot be represented by one picture, and none of the three has been pulled from sbvu.ac.in and self-hosted so far. When images do go up, each will be labelled with the campus it shows, because a candidate allotted to Ammapettai gains nothing from a photograph of Pillaiyarkuppam.
