#58

Gujarat Technological University inspects its colleges, endorses the teachers they appoint, approves the syllabus they teach and sets the examinations their students sit. It teaches almost none of those students itself. GTU affiliates 468 colleges and counts about 2,71,000 students on its rolls, while its own schools admit a few hundred a year, and the pharmacy rank of 58 quoted against the name was earned by one of those schools, in Gandhinagar. Tell the two apart before comparing anything: a fee, a closing rank or a placement figure carried under this name usually belongs to one specific college.

Overview

Gujarat Act No. 20 of 2007 brought the university into being, and what it brought into being was a network rather than a campus. The university describes itself as a state university with 468 affiliated colleges operating across the state through six zones at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Rajkot, Surat and Bhuj, with about 2,71,000 students enrolled in diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Engineering, architecture, management, pharmacy and computer science are the fields it covers.

Affiliation is a process the university administers, and reading it explains what GTU actually does for those colleges. An institute applies first to its apex body, AICTE or the Pharmacy Council of India or the Council of Architecture or the state government; GTU then runs an academic inspection, and a review committee recommends whether affiliation follows. The same office issues no-objection certificates for a new course, a change in intake, a merger or a closure, and it can withdraw affiliation. It also endorses the appointment of faculty and principals at self-financed and grant-in-aid institutes, after a selection interview held with the vice chancellor's nominee present, which is why a lecturer at an affiliated college in Rajkot has a file at Chandkheda.

The roll in its own schools is small, and unusually international for a state university. Where the 2026 ranking submission counts heads it finds 624 in the four-year bachelor's programmes and 359 in the two-year master's, and of those 624 undergraduates 481 give a Gujarat address, 19 an address elsewhere in India and 124 an address outside the country.

Courses & Fees

Tuition here is quoted by the semester, and the university does not set it. Both engineering institutes are entered in the counselling records under the institute type SFI and the management school under UMGUI, codes the committee's own key expands as self financed institute and university managed unaided course, so the rate is settled outside GTU by the Fee Regulatory Committee (Technical). That committee has not closed the 2026-27 question. Its fee circular prints a provisional annual figure against each GTU institute and in the same breath directs that whole appendix to keep charging the 2025-26 fee, because the Education Department has not yet ruled on whether these state-university programmes are self financed or grant in aid. The seat matrix carries the same limbo as a note where the fee should be.

One master's branch is listed two ways, and the paper weighs heavily on one side. The university's programme list and the school's own mandatory disclosure both name M.E. Electronics and Communication (VLSI Design), started in 2025-26 and sanctioned at 18 seats. The eligibility list on the school's admission page has not caught up and still sets out an M.E. in Internet of Things at the same 18 seats. Take the disclosure as current and treat that eligibility entry as stale.

Two lines sit outside that table and both are paid separately. The engineering school charges Rs 4,500 a semester for its hostel with Rs 5,000 of refundable caution money at the time of admission, and a university examination fee of Rs 1,000 a semester that the student pays online to the university directly. The management school's one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Marketing costs Rs 25,000, billed as Rs 12,500 a semester, and runs on Saturday evenings and Sundays, a timetable built for people already in a job.

The intake numbers are worth checking twice, because two official documents count the same two classrooms differently. The engineering school's own page records its undergraduate branches as AICTE approved with an intake of 60 in computer engineering and 30 in electronics and communication, while the committee's 2026-27 seat matrix prints 68 and 34 against the same institute, for a total of 102. Seats are allotted from the counselling sheet, so that is the document to read when you are counting your chances.

Mevad and Chandkheda cost the same, which is not what the two sets of closing ranks would lead anyone to expect. The fee committee's appendix puts the provisional 2026-27 rate for the Mevad institute's B.E. at Rs 40,000 a year against a proposal of Rs 42,000, its three-year diploma at Rs 30,000 against a proposed Rs 31,500, and the Chandkheda B.E. on that identical Rs 40,000 line. Chandkheda restates its half of that as Rs 20,000 a semester; for Mevad the appendix is the fee notice, and what the state prints about the campus behind it - the mess, the transport, the two absent hostels - stands in the seat matrix instead.

Admissions

Almost no seat in a GTU school is applied for at GTU. Its own programmes are handed to four different authorities, and picking the wrong portal costs a cycle.

Undergraduate eligibility is the state's, not the university's. A candidate needs class 12 science with at least 45% for open category and 40% for SC, ST and SEBC candidates in physics and mathematics with chemistry, biology, computer or a vocational subject, and must have appeared in GUJCET; the whole intake is then filled by the committee. The master's route is split down the middle: for the M.E. programmes admission on 50% of the intake is through the committee, and the page does not say who fills the other half. What the school does advertise itself is an offline round for M.E. seats left vacant after the committee's rounds.

Management applicants come through a national test and a state committee together. All three MBA specialisations are filled on CMAT through the state admission committee, and each of them opens further seats on top of that sanctioned intake, for economically weaker section candidates and for foreign students routed through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The pharmacy school forecloses the usual follow-up on its own admission page: the committee runs the whole process, and no management-quota route into the institute exists.

Cutoff

The engineering closing ranks below are from the third round of the 2026-27 GUJCET counselling, and the gap between the university's two institutes is the first thing to notice. Both award the same degree.

Tuition fee waiver seats sit in a queue of their own and close far earlier than the general one. The same sheet records the waiver seat in computer engineering closing at 1490 at Chandkheda and at 15003 at Mevad, so a candidate eligible for that category is competing against a much shorter list than the open column suggests.

In the 2025-26 M.Pharm allotment, pharmacy postgraduates were ranked twice over, and the state sheet warns you about its own numbering before it starts. It states that the first three digits of the last allotted rank are a code for the board and discipline and the last four digits are the actual rank number, and it runs GPAT-qualified candidates and candidates admitted on the state PGCET paper as separate blocks against the same seats.

Management seats close on a CMAT-based state merit rank, and the three specialisations landed within a few hundred places of one another in the second round of the current cycle. General category home state seats closed at 12401 for International Business, 12472 for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Venture Development and 12713 for FinTech. Whichever of the three you rank first on the choice form, the merit needed is close to identical.

Placements

Two official records carry a GTU salary and they answer different questions. The engineering school's mandatory disclosure to AICTE gives its campus placements over three years as a spread - Rs 2,21,000 at the bottom, Rs 7,00,000 at the top, Rs 3,82,935 on average. The ranking returns give a median per cohort instead, and all three cohorts below finished in 2024-25.

Cohort graduating 2024-25Graduated in minimum timePlacedMedian salaryWent to higher study
Four-year undergraduate programmes10964Rs 3,15,00038
Two-year postgraduate programmes160152Rs 5,45,0005
Two-year M.Pharm5957Rs 6,90,0002

Read the undergraduate row against the postgraduate one before choosing an entry point. A little over half the bachelor's cohort was placed and 38 of them went on to study further, while the master's cohorts were placed almost to a student. The pharmacy median has also moved violently rather than steadily: the same return records Rs 2,50,000 for the cohort graduating in 2022-23, Rs 7,50,000 for 2023-24 and Rs 6,90,000 for 2024-25. Three cohorts of that size do not make a trend line, and a figure quoted from any one of those years describes that year alone.

The three schools are not equally forthcoming, and the gap between them decides how much any placement claim here is worth. The pharmacy school publishes, for three master's batches in Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance, every student by name against the employer they went to or the word Nil, with Zydus Lifesciences the name that recurs most and not one placement recorded as on campus. The engineering school lists its placed postgraduates by name and company, including DRDO, ISRO, BEL and TCS across recent years, but puts no salary against any individual name, only the three-year range in its disclosure. The management school's placement page carries one report, for the batch of 2018-20, and nothing since.

Seat Matrix

GTU's own engineering intake is small, and the state sheet prints all of it in the government GUJCET column at both institutes.

On the pharmacy side the university's own sanctioned postgraduate intake is 55 seats for the two-year programme, split across the four specialisations, with the 100 B.Pharm seats the school lists beside them. The seat count for the affiliated network sits in a different document: the university's affiliated institute page carries a zone-wise intake workbook and a course-by-course institute list for the current year, with the AICTE intake and the GTU intake side by side. If the college you are applying to is not one of the two institutes above, that is where its seats are.

Rankings

GTU holds one rank in the ministry's 2025 tables and it is a pharmacy rank: 58th, on an overall score of 49.72, made up of 66.83 for teaching and resources, 29.68 for research, 65.07 for graduation outcomes, 50.47 for outreach and inclusivity and 27.10 for perception. In the 2024 table the same school stood at 70 on a score of 44.33, with teaching and resources at 68.87, research at 17.50, graduation outcomes at 59.96 and perception at 14.32. Research and perception each added about twelve points and graduation outcomes five; teaching and resources went the other way, down about two.

What the rank measures is narrower than the name on it. The submission behind that number covers a sanctioned two-year intake of 55 and a total roll of 109 students, which is the postgraduate half of the Gandhinagar school, not its 100-seat B.Pharm and not the pharmacy colleges affiliated to the university. The table also prints Ahmedabad against the entry, which is where the university is registered rather than where the ranked school sits: that school's address is in Sector 26, Gandhinagar. A B.Pharm student at an affiliated college in Surat gets a GTU degree and no share of the ranking either. The university files returns in six categories for the 2026 cycle, overall, sustainability, innovation, engineering, pharmacy and management, and publishes each one, so the raw data behind any future rank is readable before the table is.

Departments

Teaching at GTU is divided among six institutes and a doctoral department, and they are not all in Ahmedabad. The School of Applied Sciences and Technology, the School of Engineering and Technology, the School of Indian Knowledge System, the School of Management Studies, the School of Pharmacy, the GTU Institute of Technology and Research and a Ph.D. department each run their own programmes, and the list of what they teach ranges from an M.A. in Hindu Studies to an M.E. in structural engineering and an M.Sc. in industrial biotechnology.

The doctoral department is where the affiliating character shows up in the university's own numbers. The register holds 129 full-time scholars and 1,559 part-time ones, and the doctorates conferred that year ran 8 to 135 on the same axis. Part-time doctoral study on that scale is a teaching workforce upgrading its qualifications, most of it employed at the colleges GTU affiliates rather than at GTU.

The research ledger leans the same way. In 2024 the university had 147 patents granted and 21 published, and in 2024-25 its sponsored research came to 12 projects and Rs 10,17,81,964 while its consultancy came to 116 jobs, 112 client organisations and Rs 8,02,42,486. Consultancy on that scale, run off schools this small, is the arithmetic of a body that spends its year inspecting, examining and advising institutions other than itself.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The Chandkheda campus carries the shared services for a university that mostly examines students elsewhere. It runs a central library online and an intellectual property facilitation centre, lists a dispensary, a gymnasium, a creche, a guest house and staff quarters among its centralised facilities, and keeps a counselling centre named SAMVAD that offers brief psychotherapy, stress and grief counselling and personality and anxiety assessments from room A-011 on the ground floor of the GTU building, between 10:30 am and 6:00 pm. A student at an affiliated college is not the intended user of any of it.

Physical access is one of the few things GTU files twice over, once for the university and once for its Gandhinagar school, and the two returns come back word for word the same: more than 80% on each of the two questions about buildings, an unqualified yes on wheelchairs, walking aids and moving a student from one building to the next. For an institution whose own schools sit in three districts, that matching pair is as close as the record comes to comparing one of its campuses with another. The capital lines for 2024-25 read Rs 96,12,438 for the library, Rs 7,28,51,235 for new laboratory equipment and Rs 4,88,77,527 for engineering workshops, that last against Rs 13,80,744 the year before.

Hostel

There is one hostel campus and it is at Chandkheda, behind the administrative building. Its own page sets the terms out as twin sharing, with a separate bed, chair, study table and cupboard for each student, hot water in winter, round the clock water and electricity, a mess for all students and kitchen and air conditioning for international students, CCTV cover and an indoor and outdoor sports facility, with a rector named and contactable on the same page. Rainwater harvesting, a sewage treatment plant and rooftop solar are listed alongside.

Three things a candidate should settle before assuming a bed. The management school states that the university has two hostel buildings, one for boys, with girls accommodated at a staff quarter in the same premises, and the sentence on that page which should carry the total capacity has no number in it, so no published figure for beds exists. The pharmacy school in Gandhinagar tells its own students that hostel facility is available at the GTU Chandkheda campus and that students have to manage transportation on their own. And the state seat matrix records a boys' hostel, a girls' hostel and a mess at Chandkheda with no transport, and at Mevad neither hostel, a mess and transport. A student allotted Mevad is arranging their own accommodation.

Faculty

The teaching staff of the schools is published in full, name by name, in the ranking returns rather than in a prospectus. The 2026 overall submission carries a faculty table running to 158 entries, each with designation, gender, qualification, months of experience, joining date and whether the teacher is still in post; the pharmacy submission lists 19 for the School of Pharmacy on the same fields and marks exactly one of the nineteen adhoc. A prospective research supervisor can be looked up there before an application goes in.

Academic governance is staffed differently, and it is the clearest signal of what kind of university this is. GTU's Faculty of Engineering for 2024-27 is chaired by teachers who work elsewhere: the dean is at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in Chandkheda, the dean for diploma engineering at Government Polytechnic Himmatnagar, and the chairpersons for mechanical, civil, computer, instrumentation and textile engineering at government colleges in Patan, Modasa, Morbi and Ahmedabad, with two of GTU's own teachers, from the engineering and the applied-sciences schools, chairing boards of studies alongside them. The syllabus a student at an affiliated college studies is set by that board.

Notable Alumni

Ask GTU who its distinguished graduates are and it does not answer. Its official alumni network runs a members directory, a mentoring and jobs board and a periodic meet, and it even carries a pair of alumni honours, the GTU Star Award and the GTU Rising Star Award - but what it publishes against them is nomination criteria, not a roll of recipients. That is simply what an affiliating university's alumni record looks like. The 468 colleges all award the same degree, so anyone described in public as a GTU alumnus actually sat their examinations at one particular college, and that college is where the claim can be settled.

News & Articles

Three things on GTU's own noticeboards are worth a candidate's attention this cycle. The university has published its NIRF 2026 submissions in six categories, so the data behind next year's ranking can be read now rather than after the tables come out. Its affiliation office has issued the public notice for the 2026-27 affiliation process, together with a revision of affiliation fees for new institutes and penalty charges for existing ones, which is what decides whether a college can admit at all next year. And the alumni portal records the bhoomi poojan of a new GTU campus, its foundation stone laid by the Union Home and Cooperation Minister, Amit Shah.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

Read the accreditation with its expiry attached: this one is in force from 14-02-2023 until 13-02-2028 on a CGPA of 3.26. The state counselling sheet prints the letter that goes with the number, A+, beside every GTU institute in the book. It also publishes its UGC 2(f) and 12(B) letters and the NAAC accreditation letter on the About page, the recognitions that bring a state university under the UGC Act and make it eligible for UGC grants.

Programme-level approval is a separate matter and sits with the apex bodies. GTU's own list of programmes records, against every entry, whether the approval came from AICTE, from the Pharmacy Council of India or from the university itself. That third group is wider than it first looks: it takes in every postgraduate diploma, the doctoral and post-doctoral programmes, and all four of the applied-sciences school's degrees, none of which answers to an outside council.

Scholarships

GTU runs a merit scholarship of its own for students in its schools, and the award is set by the marks of the year before. The published table gives 100% at 90% or above in the qualifying year, 75% between 80% and 89.99%, 50% between 75% and 79.99% and 25% between 65% and 74.99%, in every year of an undergraduate or postgraduate programme, capped at 20% of those admitted. What the percentage is applied to is not stated on that page, so ask the institute office what the base amount is before treating it as a fee waiver.

Research students are funded separately and more concretely. The same page records a stipend of Rs 12,400 a month for GATE-qualified students and Rs 6,000 a month at BISAG for selected students doing a postgraduate dissertation. Neither of those is the widest-reaching scheme on the campus. The return counts 205 undergraduates and 110 postgraduates whose whole tuition is met out of state and central government funds, well past the 20% ceiling GTU puts on its own merit award.
