IIT Mandi rose to 26th among India's engineering institutions in the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework, five places above where it sat a year earlier, and it did so from a mountain campus in the Kamand valley of Himachal Pradesh that most of the older IITs would find remote. It admits its B.Tech students through JEE Advanced and the JoSAA counselling that follows, teaches through nine schools rather than the conventional departments, and places 10th in the country on NIRF's Innovation list, a stronger showing there than its engineering rank alone would suggest.

Overview

IIT Mandi was set up in 2009 as one of the second generation of IITs, and it became an IIT in law under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. Its campus sits on the left bank of the Uhl River at the Kamand and Salgi villages, about 14 km from Mandi town, which makes it one of the few Institutes of National Importance built into a Himalayan setting rather than on the plains.

The institute is organised differently from the founding IITs. Instead of departments it runs nine schools: Biosciences and Bioengineering, Computing and Electrical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. That structure folds several disciplines into each school, so a student here belongs to a broad academic unit rather than a single narrow department, and the engineering, science, management and humanities streams sit under one roof at Kamand.

Courses & Fees

The teaching at Kamand runs from a four-year B.Tech up through master's and doctoral study, with each programme reached by the entrance route named beside it.

The fee a first-year B.Tech student pays is set out in the institute's own notice for the 2026 batch. The institute fee, which covers tuition and registration, is Rs 1,01,000 a semester for general, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates; one-time non-refundable charges of Rs 10,000 and a refundable deposit of Rs 7,000 are added at admission, for a first-semester total of Rs 1,18,000. SC, ST and PwD students are given a full exemption from tuition, so their institute fee falls to Rs 1,000 a semester on the same notice.

Two income-linked waivers pull that figure down for others. Undergraduates on the B.Tech and B.S. programmes have their tuition written off in full when yearly family income falls under Rs 1 lakh, and two-thirds of it written off when that income lands in the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh band. Living costs are billed on top: hostel charges are Rs 9,600, mess charges run to about Rs 16,884 paid to the vendor through the institute, a refundable mess security of Rs 5,000 and a medical cover of Rs 750 a year complete the bill. A master's or doctoral seat costs far less than the undergraduate one; the institute fee for the M.Sc, MA and M.Tech intake is Rs 11,000 a semester.

Admissions

A B.Tech seat at IIT Mandi is never won by applying to the institute at all. Eligibility opens with a qualifying JEE Main result, turns on the All India Rank a candidate earns in JEE Advanced, and is settled inside JoSAA counselling, where that rank is weighed against the ordered branch list a student submits before Kamand can extend an offer in any round. No undergraduate applicant sits a Mandi-set paper, and the category-reservation and supernumerary quotas follow the common IIT norms rather than a rule specific to this campus.

Postgraduate entry runs on its own exams. M.Tech admission needs a valid GATE score, the two-year M.Sc and MA seats are filled largely through IIT JAM and the institute's own selection, and the School of Management runs its MBA and integrated MBA through its notified admission process. Doctoral and integrated-PhD scholars are taken through the institute's selection alongside national fellowships, and the official admissions pages carry the current notifications for each route. Because deadlines and eligibility shift each cycle, those notices are the version to plan against.

Cutoff

There is no IIT Mandi cutoff to look up, and that is structural rather than an omission: the number that admits or turns away a candidate is set inside JoSAA's national counselling, not by anything the Kamand campus itself decides. What governs a seat is the closing rank JoSAA records for one named branch in one named category, read at the round a candidate can realistically expect a call.

Two features of Mandi bend that number. The sanctioned undergraduate intake is small beside the largest IITs, so each branch holds only a thin band of seats and its closing rank can lurch from round to round. And because the institute belongs to the 2009 generation, most of its branches settle at ranks a founding-IIT aspirant would find comfortable, with computer science the single line that stays genuinely hard to reach. The workable planning figure is last cycle's closing rank for the branch and category in question, held loosely, since it can only tighten as more strong candidates rank Kamand ahead of their alternatives.

Placements

The most honest placement signal for IIT Mandi is the median it files with NIRF each year, since a median describes the middle of an entire graduating cohort while a single headline package describes one fortunate student. The 2023-24 undergraduate cohort recorded a median of Rs 18,50,000, 196 placements out of 280 who finished, and 73 graduates who left for further study instead. Read across three years, the undergraduate figures trace a cohort that keeps enlarging while the median it clears has shifted.

Graduating batchGraduatedPlacedMedian salary
2021-22187157Rs 21,00,000
2022-23232207Rs 22,00,000
2023-24280196Rs 18,50,000

That last row reads as a leaner year rather than a warning sign: the cohort was the biggest of the three, both the placed count and the median eased, and the tally opting for higher study leapt from 24 to 73. The straightforward account is a larger class arriving into a cooler hiring market, not any slippage at the campus. Postgraduate numbers run lower, the pattern at every IIT. The 2023-24 postgraduate median stood at Rs 7,15,000, with 95 of 251 graduates placed and 111 moving into further study. A single top offer would flatter the page more than these medians do, but only the median lets a family compare Mandi like for like against another institute.

Seat Matrix

IIT Mandi's sanctioned intake has expanded steeply as the campus has filled out. The institute reported a sanctioned undergraduate intake of 520 four-year seats for 2023-24, up from 301 two years earlier, and 231 postgraduate seats in its two-year programmes. That headline figure is only an upper bound. The way it divides across branches, across the gender-neutral and female-only quotas, and across the reserved categories is re-drawn every admission cycle and cannot be read off the campus-wide number.

The practical consequence is that any one branch here carries a slim allocation, so the sound move is to open the current year's JoSAA seat matrix directly rather than back out a branch total from the sanctioned intake. Counting every year-group at once, actual enrolment runs well past a single year's intake: 1,345 students on the four-year undergraduate track and 515 on the two-year postgraduate one as of the 2025 submission, with the doctoral community adding several hundred on top.

Rankings

IIT Mandi's NIRF standing has firmed up on the measures that matter most to an applicant. Its engineering rank has improved for two editions running, its overall position has climbed year on year, and it has held a place inside the national Innovation top ten across both years, a table that rewards research translation and entrepreneurship rather than classroom teaching alone.

The engineering climb is real: IIT Mandi ranked 26th with a score of 62.08 in 2025, up from 31st and a score of 59.86 in 2024. Behind that single score the institute is uneven in a telling way: its teaching-and-resources sub-score of 81.90 and its graduation-outcome sub-score of 78.29 are strong, while its perception sub-score of 21.95 is the weakest part of its profile. For a young institute in a remote valley, a low peer-and-recruiter perception score against strong delivery numbers is close to what its age and location would predict, and it is the axis most likely to move as more of its graduates reach senior roles.

Departments

Teaching and research at IIT Mandi are grouped into nine schools rather than departments: Biosciences and Bioengineering, Computing and Electrical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The table sorts them by broad area.

The school structure is the thing that most sets Mandi apart from an older IIT. A student in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering, for instance, sits alongside both computer science and electrical faculty rather than in a single-discipline department, and the same breadth holds in the sciences and engineering schools. That arrangement is meant to keep interdisciplinary work close at hand, which suits an institute whose research strengths span materials, biosciences and computing.

Facilities & Infrastructure

IIT Mandi is a fully residential campus laid out along the Uhl River at Kamand, so classrooms, laboratories, hostels and faculty housing sit together on the one Himalayan site about 14 km from Mandi town. The setting is the defining feature: the campus is spread across the valley on both banks of the river, and daily life for students and staff largely stays on it rather than in the town.

Kamand was raised from open hillside for the institute, not inherited from an older college, so its lecture theatres and labs are new-build stock and the annual capital outlay on equipment, laboratories and workshops has kept climbing as each larger cohort arrives. The institute keeps a current inventory of its laboratories, library and sports and hostel blocks on its own site, and that is the source to consult before a visit, given that a Himalayan campus of this kind is a secured academic estate people live on rather than somewhere a visitor simply walks in.

Hostel

Housing at IIT Mandi is allotted as part of admission, not sought through a separate hostel application, because the institute is built to accommodate its whole community up at Kamand. Everyone from first-year undergraduates to the sizeable body of PhD scholars is resident, which the campus's position deep in the valley, well clear of Mandi town, effectively requires.

Board and lodging are billed on top of the academic fee and revised each session. For the 2026 intake the hostel charge is Rs 9,600, mess charges run to about Rs 16,884 paid to the vendor through the institute, and a refundable mess security of Rs 5,000 is taken once. A first-year budget at Mandi therefore needs to set aside these living costs beyond the semester institute fee, and meals run through the campus mess system that every resident student is part of.

Faculty

IIT Mandi's faculty has expanded in step with the intake. Its 2025 NIRF filing counts 211 faculty members, distributed across the nine schools, and for an applicant that headcount matters less on its own than for the research it sustains.

Research runs deep here for a campus this young. The same filing lists 672 full-time doctoral scholars, 195 sponsored projects drawing on 56 funding agencies, and 52 consultancy engagements in 2023-24. A student after laboratory or field work can plausibly find a group to join precisely because that volume of funded enquiry and PhD supervision is in place, and it is the same output that carries Mandi into the top ten of NIRF's national Innovation table.

Notable Alumni

IIT Mandi enrolled its founding class in 2009, so its first B.Tech graduates left only in the mid-2010s and its master's and doctoral alumni are younger still. Careers at that stage are mid-build rather than the stuff of published honour rolls, and a research-heavy campus routes many of its ablest graduates into laboratories and technical teams where a reputation accrues quietly, out of public view. Rather than pin a name on the institute that cannot be tied to a verifiable record, this section stays open until such records accumulate; the reason is Mandi's short history, not any shortage of ability among the people it has trained.

News & Articles

The institute runs its own online notice boards for admissions, recruitment, tenders and campus events, and its Academics section is where the dated circulars on fees, registration and deadlines actually live. For anyone mid-application, those first-party pages are the ones to watch, because a reissued fee sheet or a moved counselling date lands there ahead of any coaching portal or news summary that later repeats it.

College Compare

The honest comparison set for IIT Mandi is the wave of IITs founded alongside it in 2008 and 2009, the peers it actually competes with, not the older institutes with decades of head start. In NIRF 2025 engineering its score of 62.08 placed it 26th, one step behind IIT Gandhinagar at 25th on 62.31 and one ahead of IIT Jodhpur at 27th on 61.31, and all three belong to that same founding cohort. The margins between them are small enough that the ordering turns on fractions of a point.

The useful question, then, is not whether Mandi finishes a rung above or below Gandhinagar and Jodhpur, but which of the three fits a given student best once the specific branch, the placement median and the campus setting are set side by side. Measured against the bigger, older IITs, Mandi gives up sheer scale and a deep alumni network and offers in return purpose-built facilities, a top-ten Innovation record and a campus in the Himalayas, and a student weighing it should reckon with that exchange plainly.

Contact & Location

IIT Mandi's campus is at VPO Kamand, Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh 175005, on the left bank of the Uhl River about 14 km from Mandi town. For current phone numbers, school and office email addresses, and the route it recommends up to Kamand, the institute's own website is the authoritative source, since the campus sits well outside the town proper.

Mandi is reached by road from Chandigarh and the wider Himachal hill network, and the final leg out to Kamand is a valley drive. Because that campus is an inhabited, secured academic estate in the hills and not a public thoroughfare, anyone intending to visit should arrange gate entry and any hostel access with the institute in advance.
