Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune is a private, health-science-led deemed-to-be university in Pimpri whose dental school ranked 4th in India and whose medical college ranked 12th in the NIRF 2025 tables. It is one of at least half a dozen institutions that carry the D. Y. Patil name, so the first thing to fix is which one this page is about: the deemed university at Sant Tukaram Nagar, Pimpri (website dpu.edu.in), declared a deemed university in 2003, and not the separately run D. Y. Patil bodies in Navi Mumbai, Kolhapur or elsewhere in Pune. If you are weighing an MBBS or BDS seat here, the two things that will shape the decision are the fee, which runs into tens of lakhs a year, and the NEET-UG rank the counselling round will accept.

Overview

The Vidyapeeth gathers a cluster of health-science colleges on one Pimpri campus and runs them as a single deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Its anchor institutions are the Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre and the Dr. D. Y. Patil Dental College and Hospital; around them sit colleges of ayurved, homoeopathy, nursing, physiotherapy and optometry, a biotechnology and bioinformatics institute, and the Global Business School and Research Centre for management. The teaching hospital attached to the medical college gives clinical students a working tertiary-care setting on campus rather than an affiliated one across town. At the institution level it carries NAAC's A++ grade, awarded in its third accreditation cycle.

Two things set this Vidyapeeth apart from a state university. First, as a deemed institution it admits through central deemed-university counselling, not Maharashtra's state CET pool. Second, its reputation rests on dentistry and medicine rather than a broad arts-and-science base, which is why its dental rank sits well above its all-disciplines standing.

Because so many D. Y. Patil universities exist, mixing them up is easy and costly. Ajeenkya D. Y. Patil University, D. Y. Patil International University at Akurdi and D. Y. Patil University at Ambi near Talegaon are all separate Pune institutions with their own approvals; the Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth in Navi Mumbai and the D. Y. Patil group in Kolhapur are separate again. Fees, courses and rankings quoted for any of those do not transfer to the Pimpri Vidyapeeth.

Courses & Fees

The degrees that draw the most applicants are MBBS and BDS, but the Vidyapeeth also awards BAMS through its ayurved college, nursing, physiotherapy and optometry bachelor's degrees, MD, MS and MDS postgraduate seats in the medical and dental colleges, and management and biotechnology postgraduate programmes.

The MBBS bill is easy to underestimate. It is structured as a four-and-a-half-year course in the medical college fee structure, so the yearly tuition below repeats across the first four years and the published fifth instalment of Rs 14,50,000 then covers only the final six months; and tuition is only the start, before the eligibility fee, caution deposit and hostel in the table stack on top of it.

Hostel per year (3-seater, with mess)Rs 3,40,000USD 4,600

The dental course is markedly cheaper than the medical one but is still a private-deemed bill. In its BDS fee structure the dental college sets tuition at Rs 6.50 lakh a year for an All-India-merit candidate and USD 17,000 for an NRI, foreign national or PIO/OCI applicant, notes that tuition rises by 3% each year, adds a one-time eligibility fee of 15% of first-year tuition, and charges an examination fee of Rs 10,000 per subject.

Admissions

A NEET-UG score is the only key to an MBBS or BDS seat here, and the medical college names it as the sole admission test, run by the National Testing Agency. The deemed tag changes where that score is spent: DPU's All-India-merit medical and dental seats are allotted in the Medical Counselling Committee's counselling for deemed and central universities, while the institute fills its own NRI and management-quota seats, so a Maharashtra candidate does not reach the college through the state CET rounds a government college uses. The quota you qualify for decides which portal you register on.

Postgraduate entry follows the same national-test logic through a different door: MD and MS seats turn on NEET-PG, MDS seats on NEET-MDS, and the ayurved college's BAMS intake runs on NEET-UG feeding into AYUSH counselling. In every case the score only becomes a seat once it is carried into the right counselling round and locked into an allotment, so tracking the calendar for your specific quota matters as much as the mark itself.

Cutoff

A cutoff at DPU is a moving number, not a published threshold, and it resets every counselling round. What gates a seat is the NEET-UG rank at which a given round runs out of takers, and that drifts with the quota, the category and how many higher rankers ahead of you surrender the seat. The high fee and the narrower quota pools mean the ranks that clear here in deemed and NRI counselling tend to sit below what a similarly ranked government college demands, so last year's closing rank for this specific college is a guide rather than a guarantee.

For a real estimate, pull the round-wise closing ranks the Medical Counselling Committee publishes after each deemed-university round, and read the ones tagged to your own category and quota rather than the overall topline.

Placements

Medicine and dentistry do not run on campus placement the way an engineering or management programme does. An MBBS graduate finishes a compulsory rotating internship, then either sits NEET-PG for a residency seat or begins practice; a BDS graduate follows the parallel path through NEET-MDS or clinical practice. The on-campus teaching hospital and the dental hospital are where that clinical training and much of the early caseload happen, which is the practical payoff of the Vidyapeeth owning its own hospitals rather than renting patient access from affiliated ones.

The Global Business School and the biotechnology institute do sit in the conventional recruiter-and-package world, but their placement numbers are not backed by an audited, course-wise report anyone outside can inspect. Until each school publishes its own recruiter list and salary spread, a placement figure quoted for the management or biotech stream is best read as a claim rather than a verified statistic.

Seat Matrix

There is no master seat-matrix table for the whole Vidyapeeth; the intake sits inside each college, and it is whatever the National Medical Commission and the Dental Council of India sanction for that college that year. Those seats are then split into the buckets the counselling authorities use: an All-India-merit pool that fills through Medical Counselling Committee rounds, and the separate NRI, PIO, OCI and foreign-national category that the fee schedules price differently. The dental college's own fee document, for instance, quotes tuition against exactly those two categories, All-India merit and NRI or foreign, which mirrors how its BDS seats are pooled.

For the current year's exact numbers, the reliable sources are the college admission brochures on dpu.edu.in and the seat-matrix notification the Medical Counselling Committee releases at the start of each counselling season, both of which are updated cycle by cycle.

Rankings

The Vidyapeeth's ranking profile is lopsided in a telling way, and dentistry carries it. It placed 4th in dental and 12th in medical, and 41st among universities and 71st overall in the NIRF 2025 university and overall tables, which says the health-science colleges outperform the institution's all-disciplines average.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankScore
Dental472.36
Medical1265.17
University4154.90
Overall7152.67

Two sub-scores explain the dental result. In the NIRF 2025 dental table the college posts a near-perfect peer-perception score of 99.54 and a graduation-outcome score of 92.63, both unusually high for a private college. The medical college's strength is different: in the NIRF 2025 medical table its teaching-learning-and-resources score of 77.00 leads its profile while its research score of 51.75 trails it, a shape typical of a clinically strong college that is still building research output.

One caution when you search for NIRF ranks under this name: a separate D. Y. Patil pharmacy institute in Pune holds its own NIRF pharmacy rank, and it is a different institution from this Vidyapeeth. The four ranks in the table above are the ones that belong to the Pimpri deemed university.

Departments

Rather than academic departments in the usual sense, the Vidyapeeth is organised as a set of professional colleges, each with its own faculty and clinical or laboratory base:

  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Dental College and Hospital
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Ayurved and Research Centre
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Homoeopathic Medical College and Research Centre
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Nursing
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Optometry and Visual Sciences
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute
  • Global Business School and Research Centre

Inside the ayurved college the teaching is broken into the classical branches, including samhita siddhanta, sharir rachana, kayachikitsa, shalya, stree rog and prasuti, kriya sharir, swasthavritta, rasashastra and bhaishajya kalpana, and panchakarma, so a BAMS student rotates through the same subject spread a state ayurved college would offer, under one deemed-university umbrella.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The defining facility is clinical, not ornamental: the medical college runs its own NABH and NABL accredited hospital and laboratory, and the dental college runs a dental hospital, so students train on real patient loads on the same Pimpri campus where they attend lectures. Around that sit the usual apparatus of a health-science university, a central library, pre-clinical and research laboratories, hostels for each college and sports facilities.

For a campus visit, the practical detail is that the medical, dental, ayurved and allied colleges share the Sant Tukaram Nagar site in Pimpri, so a candidate can see the hospital, the college and the hostels in a single trip rather than travelling between scattered buildings.

Hostel

Hostel is a real line item to budget for, and the two flagship colleges price it separately. Medical students pay Rs 3,40,000 a year for a three-seater non-air-conditioned room with mess included, per the MBBS fee structure. Dental students pay Rs 3,05,000 a year for hostel with mess, per the BDS fee structure. Both figures sit on top of tuition, so the all-in first-year outlay is meaningfully higher than the headline course fee alone.

Faculty

Teaching here is spread across the professional colleges rather than concentrated in a single arts-and-science faculty, with clinicians in the medical and dental colleges doubling as hospital consultants and dedicated departmental faculty in ayurved, nursing, physiotherapy and the biotechnology institute. The medical college's teaching-learning-and-resources score of 77.00 in the NIRF 2025 medical table, the sub-score that captures faculty strength and student-teacher ratio among other inputs, is the strongest part of its ranking profile. There is no all-college faculty count on dpu.edu.in; each college publishes its own department strength, so the roster for a specific programme lives on that college's pages rather than in one university-wide figure.

Notable Alumni

Deemed status came only in 2003, so the alumni base is still young, and it is made up mostly of practising doctors, dentists and health professionals rather than public figures with widely documented profiles. There is no independently verifiable roll of distinguished graduates to draw on yet; the university's own alumni association is where that record is slowly accumulating.

News & Articles

News here is scattered by design: admission notices, counselling dates and result updates go up college by college on dpu.edu.in and the medical and dental college sites, not into one central feed an outside page could mirror. For a time-sensitive item such as a fee revision or a shifted counselling window, the individual college page is the thing to open, ahead of any third-party digest.

College Compare

Placed against other private deemed medical-and-dental universities in Maharashtra, the Vidyapeeth's distinguishing feature is that its dental school outranks its medical college nationally, 4th against 12th in NIRF 2025, which is unusual and worth weighing if dentistry rather than medicine is the goal. A candidate comparing it should line up three things across shortlisted colleges: the per-year fee for their category, the NEET-UG closing rank the relevant counselling round accepted last year, and the NIRF standing of the specific stream, dental or medical, they are applying to. And they should confirm they are comparing this Pimpri deemed university, not one of the other similarly named D. Y. Patil institutions whose numbers differ.
