Indian Institute Of Technology, Bhubaneshwar
IIT Bhubaneswar is the Indian Institute of Technology that Odisha campaigned for across decades, sanctioned in 2008 as one of eight new IITs and now ranked 39th in engineering by the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework. A student weighing it against an older IIT has to assemble the real picture from the institute's own fee circular, placement report and ranking submission, because the pages that rank for its name are its home page, its Wikipedia entry and its social feeds rather than an applicant guide. This page gathers those primary numbers into one place: what a B.Tech seat costs once the waivers apply, how the JEE Advanced and JoSAA route fills it, where the institute sits in the national tables, and what its graduates were actually paid.
Overview
IIT Bhubaneswar is an Institute of National Importance, the statutory standing every IIT carries, and it began teaching in 2008 from rented and borrowed premises around Bhubaneswar before moving onto its own land. Its permanent campus is at Argul, near Jatani in the Khurda district, on the southern edge of the Odisha capital, and the shift out of the temporary city campuses is the dividing line in the institute's short history: laboratories, hostels and lecture blocks that were once scattered now sit on one residential site.
The part worth understanding first is how the academics are organised. Instead of the department structure most engineering campuses use, IIT Bhubaneswar groups its teaching and research into seven Schools, and a School here is broader than a single subject, folding several allied disciplines under one roof. That structure is paired with a deliberately flexible degree: undergraduates can add a Minor Programme in a second discipline, take Open Electives outside their own School, and stack a Micro-Specialization onto the core credits. The institute is led by a director, Professor Shreepad Karmalkar, who took charge in late 2022.
Courses & Fees
The institute teaches the full technical ladder, from a bachelor's degree to doctoral research, and the table below sets out the main entry points and how each one is filled.
| Programme | Duration | Entrance route |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech | Four years | JEE Advanced, seats through JoSAA |
| Dual Degree (B.Tech and M.Tech) | Five years | JEE Advanced, seats through JoSAA |
| M.Sc | Two years | IIT JAM |
| M.Tech | Two years | GATE, offers through COAP |
| Ph.D | Varies | Institute written test and interview |
Fees are where a family actually plans, so the figures below come straight from the institute's own 2025-26 fee circular for B.Tech entrants. Tuition is a flat amount per semester for a general, EWS or OBC student, and it is the single line that a category changes.
| Fee head | GEN / EWS / OBC (₹) | SC / ST / PwD (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee (per semester) | 1,00,000 | 0 |
| First semester total, new admission | 1,59,540 | 59,540 |
| Later autumn semester (3rd, 5th, 7th) | 1,39,540 | 39,540 |
| Spring semester (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th) | 1,37,150 | 37,150 |
Two things in that circular matter more than the headline. The first semester is heavier because it carries a one time block, including a refundable caution deposit of ₹12,000, that no later semester repeats, which is why every autumn and spring figure after it is lower. The second is the waiver ladder: SC, ST and PwD students pay no tuition at all, a family earning under ₹1 lakh a year has the fee fully remitted, and a family between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh gets two thirds of it back. So the ₹1,59,540 sticker is the top of the range, not a fixed toll, and a large share of admitted students pay well below it.
Admissions
Every seat here is filled by a national counselling round, not a form sent to the institute. A B.Tech or Dual Degree candidate must clear JEE Main, then sit JEE Advanced, and is then allotted a branch through JoSAA, the joint counselling that pools all the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes into one choice-filling process. The two year M.Tech programmes admit on a valid GATE score, with offers routed through COAP, the common offer-acceptance portal the IITs run among themselves; there is no CCMT round for an IIT. The M.Sc programmes take students through IIT JAM, and doctoral applicants apply to a School directly and face a written test and interview, which the institute runs as a round-the-year admission rather than a single annual window. Because the deciding step sits inside a centralised round, the number that governs an undergraduate's outcome is the all-India rank carried into JoSAA, not anything filed with the institute itself.
Cutoff
IIT Bhubaneswar has no fixed cutoff mark. Admission turns on the JoSAA closing rank, and that figure is set separately for every branch, category and counselling round only after the round's seats are allotted, so it lands differently each year as the applicant pool and the seat sharing shift. What holds steadier is the ordering across the seven Schools: the computing and electrical branches under the School of Electrical and Computer Sciences close tightest, while the mechanical, civil-infrastructure and materials branches stay open to wider ranks. Sitting 39th in engineering rather than among the first-generation IITs, its branches are usually reachable at ranks that would fall short at an older IIT of the same name. Treat last year's closing rank as a bearing rather than a guarantee, and read your own branch and category off the current JoSAA cycle, because a rank that just cleared one year can miss the next.
Placements
The number that best survives a young institute's noisy hiring season is the median B.Tech pay in IIT Bhubaneswar's ranking-framework return. A median sits at the middle graduate, so it shrugs off the small tail of very high offers that inflates a mean, which makes it the fairer figure to read year on year. The return records that median for the four-year B.Tech over its three most recent batches.
| B.Tech graduating batch | Placed / graduating | Median salary (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 236 / 254 | 15,00,000 |
| 2022-23 | 247 / 299 | 15,98,000 |
| 2023-24 | 254 / 321 | 14,00,000 |
The three-year arc says more than any single figure. In the same return the B.Tech median rose from ₹15,00,000 for 2021-22 to ₹15,98,000 for 2022-23, then settled to ₹14,00,000 for 2023-24 even as the count placed climbed from 236 to 254, the familiar shape of a larger cohort clearing at a slightly softer top. The five-year Dual Degree and the two-year M.Tech sit below the B.Tech line, as they do at most IITs: the Dual Degree median was ₹13,38,000 for 2023-24 and the two-year postgraduate median was ₹8,00,000.
For the most recent season the institute's Career Development Cell publishes its own count. In its 2024-25 report, 254 of the 282 B.Tech students who took part were placed, a rate of 90.07% against 315 registered, with an average package of 14.98 lakh and a top offer of 67.6 lakh; the M.Tech placement rate was 64.12%. That average runs close to the B.Tech median in the table above, and when an average and a median sit together like that, the batch was not carried by a handful of very large offers.
Seat Matrix
IIT Bhubaneswar's intake is sanctioned as a total each year, then broken down by branch and by reservation category in the JoSAA seat matrix that appears once counselling opens. Its 2025 ranking return gives the sanctioned totals by level, below.
| Level | Sanctioned intake, 2023-24 |
|---|---|
| B.Tech (four year) | 353 |
| Dual Degree (five year) | 123 |
| Postgraduate (two year) | 296 |
How those totals divide by branch, the supernumerary seats set aside for women candidates, and the full reservation split are decided in each year's JoSAA matrix rather than fixed once, so check the live matrix for the exact seats in the branch you want before you commit a choice list.
Rankings
IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked 39th among engineering institutions in the NIRF 2025 engineering list, and it also holds a place inside the overall national ranking. Inside that engineering score, its teaching, learning and resources measure is one of its stronger metrics, while its perception score, the part driven by how widely employers and academics rate it, is the weakest, which is the familiar profile of a young institute whose research base has outrun its public reputation. The structured NIRF standing is shown in the ranking panel on this page.
Departments
IIT Bhubaneswar runs its academics through seven Schools rather than conventional departments, and each School carries several related disciplines:
- School of Basic Sciences
- School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences
- School of Electrical and Computer Sciences
- School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management
- School of Infrastructure
- School of Mechanical Sciences
- School of Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
That grouping is not just an administrative label. The School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences and the School of Infrastructure give the campus a research identity rooted in geosciences and in coastal and disaster engineering, subjects that fit a coastal state, and they sit alongside the more universal electrical, computing and mechanical work. Research volume backs the teaching: its 2025 NIRF submission records 171 sponsored projects running in 2023-24 and 10 patents granted in 2023.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The Argul campus is a self-contained residential site, and the move onto it is what let the institute pull its laboratories, library and housing together after years split across temporary premises in the city. The academic core is built around the School laboratories and a central library, and because the degree pushes students across Schools through minors and open electives, the layout assumes a student will work in more than one building rather than stay inside a single department. The institute has also tied its infrastructure to outside research money, signing agreements such as a 2024 collaboration to help build a compound-semiconductor ecosystem, which puts specialised fabrication and materials work on a campus of this size.
Hostel
IIT Bhubaneswar boards its undergraduates on the Argul campus, so hostel and mess costs are line items inside each semester's fee rather than a separate, optional bill. From the official fee circular, a student pays ₹18,000 as a hostel mess advance and ₹9,500 in hostel establishment charges each semester, on top of a one time hostel admission fee of ₹2,500 at entry. The establishment charge covers the teaching terms; a student staying on through the vacation pays a further ₹500 for each 15 day block. Residence is a condition of study here, not a choice, and it fits how the degree is built: the open electives that reach across Schools and the faculty research groups both assume a student is on campus through the working week.
Faculty
IIT Bhubaneswar's 2025 ranking return names 201 faculty, every one of them a doctorate-holder. Five are senior visiting professors and two are on contract; the regular appointments that make up the rest run heaviest at the assistant-professor grade, the mark of a campus still hiring into its schools. This faculty base is what the research record rests on, since the 171 sponsored projects, the granted patents and the doctoral programme are all faculty-run, and the same return reports 450 full-time Ph.D scholars, a sizeable research population for an institute founded in 2008. The roster leans toward the basic sciences and the core engineering Schools the institute stood up first.
Notable Alumni
IIT Bhubaneswar admitted its first students only in 2008 and graduated its earliest four year batch around 2012, so it does not yet carry the decades-long alumni record an older IIT can point to. No verified, published roster of widely recognised alumni exists to reproduce here, and naming people whose record cannot be traced would be guesswork, so this section stays honest about the institute's age rather than filling it. Anyone curious about graduate outcomes is better served by the institute's alumni cell and its published placement reports, which list recruiters and higher-study destinations first-hand, than by a borrowed list of names.
News & Articles
IIT Bhubaneswar posts admission notices, examination schedules, fee-remission windows and research announcements far quicker than any profile page can keep current. The institute's own website carries the authoritative version of each update, from convocation dates to research tie-ups and the memoranda it signs with industry and skill-development bodies, and it is where a live deadline should be confirmed. Treat any date-bound claim from a third-party site as provisional until it is checked against the official notice.
College Compare
Odisha is unusually well represented in the national engineering table, and that gives a candidate a sharp local comparison. In NIRF 2025 engineering, the older NIT Rourkela led the state at 13th, the private KIIT Bhubaneswar across the city came in at 36th, and IIT Bhubaneswar followed at 39th. A private university edging an IIT in one year's score is less surprising than it sounds, because the framework rewards research volume, graduation outcomes and outreach that a large, well-funded private campus can scale quickly, and it does not measure the JEE Advanced selectivity that still separates an IIT seat from the rest. The choice is best made branch by branch rather than on the badge: a top computing applicant will stack IIT Bhubaneswar against higher-ranked IITs, a mechanical or civil applicant may reach its seats more easily than those of an older IIT, and NIT Rourkela or KIIT down the road is a real option to weigh on branch fit and fees, not on the name.
