Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar is one of the second-generation IITs the government set up in 2008, and it is one of the very few among them that will hand a school-leaver a B.Tech seat on the strength of an Olympiad record instead of a JEE Advanced rank. It sits on a residential campus at Palaj, on the bank of the Sabarmati north of Gandhinagar, and it has spent its short life trying to look less like a pure engineering school than most of its siblings.

Overview

IIT Gandhinagar is an Institute of National Importance, the statutory standing every IIT carries, and it runs entirely from its permanent campus at Palaj in Gujarat. Its founding idea was that an engineer is better for having read history and made things with their hands, and that idea shows up in the parts of the institute that have no obvious parallel elsewhere: a compulsory four-week Foundation Programme that puts every incoming batch through sport, the performing arts and workshop skills before a single core lecture, and a menu of minors that reaches into archaeology, cognitive science and design. The Foundation Programme and the Olympiad admission route are the two things prospective students most often hear about first.

On the harder measures the institute has closed a lot of ground quickly. Its 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) result, 25th in engineering nationally, is a top-thirty place earned by a campus that admitted its first undergraduates in 2008. That climb has come from research and teaching rather than brand recognition, a point the ranking pillars make plainly further down.

Courses & Fees

The institute teaches the full technical ladder. Undergraduates enter a four-year B.Tech across eight disciplines: Artificial Intelligence, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Integrated Circuit Design and Technology, Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Above that sit two-year M.Sc programmes in the sciences, a two-year MA in Society and Culture, a broad set of M.Tech specialisations, and a large doctoral school.

IIT Gandhinagar does not price its own degrees; it charges the standard IIT fee structure that applies across all the institutes. Students in the SC, ST and PwD categories pay no tuition at all, and General, OBC-NCL and EWS students from lower-income households receive full or two-thirds tuition remission scaled to family income, so the amount a given student actually pays depends far more on category and income than on the branch they read. Because the tuition figure and the hostel and mess charges are revised periodically, the binding number for any admission year is the one on the institute's official B.Tech admissions page, and it is worth confirming there before planning a budget.

Admissions

For the standard B.Tech seats the path is the two-stage national exam. A candidate must first clear JEE Main to become eligible for JEE Advanced, and a JEE Advanced rank then feeds the JoSAA process that allots seats across the IITs, NITs and IIITs together. IIT Gandhinagar runs no undergraduate entrance test of its own.

The unusual door is the Olympiad route. IIT Gandhinagar admits a small number of B.Tech students who have been selected to national Olympiad training camps or won medals at the international Olympiads, covering mathematics, physics, chemistry and informatics, in the current year or any of the previous four, without requiring a JEE Advanced score from them. It is a narrow channel meant for students who have already proven themselves at the sharpest end of school-level science, and it answers a question a lot of applicants ask: yes, there is a way into this IIT that does not run through JEE, though it is open to very few.

Master's admission is by national test. The M.Tech seats come from GATE ranks processed through COAP and CCMT, the M.Sc seats from IIT JAM, and a PhD place from a direct application to the department, decided on its own shortlist and interview.

Cutoff

Admission to a B.Tech seat turns on one number, the JoSAA closing rank for the exact branch and category a candidate is chasing, and that figure is set fresh each counselling season rather than fixed by the institute. Computer Science and Engineering and the newer Artificial Intelligence programme generally close at the tightest ranks at IIT Gandhinagar, with the core engineering branches closing later in the rounds, though the ordering shifts from year to year as candidate preferences move. The dependable move is to read the branch-and-category closing rank from the current year's round data on the official JoSAA portal rather than plan against a figure from a past season, because a rank that secured a seat one year can miss the next.

Placements

The figures below are the medians IIT Gandhinagar itself reported to the national ranking framework, one for each of the last three undergraduate batches, so they describe the middle of the graduating class rather than a single standout offer. Of the 214 undergraduates who finished on schedule in 2023-24, 160 were placed at a median of ₹14,00,000 and 51 went on to further study.

Graduating batchGraduated on timePlacedMedian salary (₹)
2021-2217313514,17,000
2022-2318813716,00,000
2023-2421416014,00,000

Read across the three years, the undergraduate median has held in the mid-teens in lakh terms while roughly a quarter of each class chooses further study over a job, which is a high research-going share and fits an institute that leans hard on its doctoral and laboratory work. Master's outcomes sit lower, as they do across the IITs: the 2023-24 M.Tech median was ₹13,50,000, with 52 of 73 graduates placed. A peak-package headline would read higher than any of these, but the median is the number that tells a typical student what to expect.

Seat Matrix

IIT Gandhinagar's intake is a fixed sanctioned number set before each admission year, and how it divides across the eight B.Tech branches and the reservation categories only becomes public in the JoSAA seat matrix at counselling time. That approved intake has been rising as the institute adds programmes.

Level2023-24 intake2022-23 intake
UG, 4-year (B.Tech)310225
UG, 5-year6040
PG, 2-year27590

For a sense of the campus behind those admission numbers, the institute reported 1,050 students in its four-year undergraduate programmes, 82 in its five-year programmes and 363 in its two-year postgraduate programmes for 2023-24. Because the four-year undergraduate intake is still modest, an individual branch carries only a small block of seats, so the live JoSAA matrix, with its gender-neutral and female-supernumerary pools, is the only count that reflects what is genuinely on offer when a candidate fills preferences.

Rankings

In the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework, IIT Gandhinagar holds the 25th place among engineering institutions on a score of 62.31, and its strongest parameter by far is teaching, learning and resources at 85.82, well ahead of its research-and-professional-practice score of 41.07 and its perception score of 29.36. That spread is the honest shape of a young institute: it teaches and graduates its students as well as almost anyone, but it has not yet built the outside reputation that older IITs trade on, and the perception pillar is where it loses the most ground.

Across every kind of higher-education institution in the country, the same cycle places it 39th in the overall category on a score of 57.01, a table that mixes engineering schools with universities, medical colleges and management institutes.

As a research body it is ranked 36th on a score of 49.61, a standing that rests on its doctoral output and sponsored projects rather than its student headcount, which is small next to the institutes above it.

Departments

The engineering departments cover Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Circuit Design and Technology among the newer undergraduate disciplines. Alongside them the institute runs strong science departments in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biological Sciences and Engineering, and, unusually for an IIT, a substantial Humanities and Social Sciences group that carries cognitive science, archaeology and the Society and Culture programme. That breadth is not decorative: the minors and the cross-department electives that define an IIT Gandhinagar degree only work because these groups sit next to the engineering blocks.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The permanent campus at Palaj is a self-contained residential township on the Sabarmati riverfront, built from the ground up rather than inherited. Its research base is what a prospective student should weigh most: the institute runs central laboratories, a well-funded library and specialised research facilities, and it has made a visible effort on access, reporting lifts, ramps and adapted toilets in more than 80% of its buildings. The campus also houses maker spaces and workshop facilities that feed the hands-on, project-based teaching the institute is known for, so a mechanical undergraduate and a cognitive-science researcher share the same few square kilometres.

Hostel

IIT Gandhinagar is a fully residential institute, and undergraduates are expected to live on campus through their degree, which is part of how the cross-department culture holds together. Hostel blocks, dining halls and student amenities sit inside the Palaj campus rather than off-site. Because the hostel and mess charges are revised each year and billed alongside tuition, the current amounts are best read from the official admissions and hostel pages for the relevant year.

Faculty

The institute is taught by a young, research-active faculty. Its 2025 NIRF engineering submission lists 154 faculty members, almost all holding a doctorate and most on regular full-time appointments. That base drives the institute's standing more than its size does: it reported 293 sponsored research projects funded by 72 agencies in 2023-24, a heavy load for a faculty of that size. The doctoral school is large for a campus of this age, with 590 full-time research scholars working across the departments, which is why so many of its own undergraduates leave for further study rather than straight into work.

Notable Alumni

The institute graduated its first B.Tech students only in the early 2010s, so a settled roll of nationally known graduates has not yet formed the way it has at the older IITs. Rather than repeat unverified names, the fair thing to say is that its alumni are still early in their careers, with the largest visible cohort in research and higher study given how many graduates continue on. The alumni association reachable from the official website is the reliable place to trace where they have gone.
