National Institute Of Technology, Durgapur

#49

NIT Durgapur is the National Institute of Technology most West Bengal engineering aspirants weigh against the state's own heavyweights, IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University, before they weigh it against any other NIT. On the government's NIRF 2025 engineering table it sits 49th, in the working middle of the country's NIT system rather than near its front. Its B.Tech seats are settled by a JEE Main rank read through JoSAA counselling and then divided between a West Bengal home-state pool and an all-India pool. What follows sets out the fee bill, how the branch cutoff is fixed, and a placement record that climbed and then fell back across the three years the institute has reported to NIRF.

Overview

The institute opened in 1960 as Regional Engineering College Durgapur, affiliated to the University of Burdwan, one of the joint Centre-and-state colleges the country raised in that decade to feed engineers into its new industrial belts (Wikipedia). Its rename came slightly later than most of the older RECs: it was granted deemed-university status and became the National Institute of Technology Durgapur in 2003, a year behind the 2002 conversions at Rourkela, Warangal and Calicut, before the National Institutes of Technology Act of 2007 put it on the statutory footing of an Institute of National Importance.

Durgapur itself is an industrial city in West Bengal, and the campus runs to 187 acres with its main gate on Mahatma Gandhi Avenue at the eastern edge of the grounds (Wikipedia). The place is smaller in land than the sprawling steel-town NITs, and its academic identity leans hard toward materials work: metallurgical and materials engineering has been a core department since the REC years, and it is the field three of the institute's four publicly listed notable alumni went on to lead.

Courses & Fees

Undergraduate teaching is built around the four-year B.Tech, with a five-year integrated M.Sc alongside it, while the postgraduate side runs M.Tech through GATE, an MBA under the Department of Management Studies, and M.Sc, MSW and a large doctoral programme. The table maps the main entry routes.

ProgrammeDurationEntrance route
B.Tech4 yearsJEE Main, then JoSAA and CSAB
Integrated M.Sc5 yearsJEE Main, then JoSAA
M.Tech2 yearsGATE, then CCMT
MBA2 yearsCAT, then institute counselling
M.Sc, MSW2 yearsInstitute admission process
Ph.D3 to 5 yearsInstitute written test and interview

The tuition line is the same centrally fixed figure every NIT charges, Rs 62,500 a semester for a B.Tech seat, but the bill a Durgapur student actually pays is set out semester by semester on the institute's fee page. The first semester comes to Rs 1,11,100 once the one-time admission and hostel charges are folded in, and each of the seven semesters after it runs about Rs 90,600, which brings the four-year cost to roughly Rs 7,45,700 for a general, OBC-NCL or EWS candidate (NIT Durgapur B.Tech fee breakdown).

Fee component, B.TechAmount
Tuition fee (each semester)Rs 62,500
First semester total (with one-time charges)Rs 1,11,100
Each later semester (typical)Rs 90,600
Four-year total (general or OBC-NCL or EWS)about Rs 7,45,700
Hostel seat rent (each semester)Rs 10,000

Who pays the full tuition depends on family income. Students in the SC, ST or PwD categories, and any candidate whose family income falls below Rs 1 lakh a year, have the tuition line waived entirely, so their four-year outlay drops to the hostel and institute charges alone (fee breakdown). The postgraduate programmes are cheaper on paper than a private equivalent: the MBA is about Rs 2.15 lakhs for the two years, the M.Tech about Rs 2.05 lakhs, the integrated M.Sc about Rs 2.29 lakhs, and M.Sc or MSW about Rs 95,100 (NIT Durgapur course fees).

Admissions

A B.Tech place at Durgapur is never applied for on the institute's own form. You sit JEE Main, the score produces an All India rank, and that rank is fed into the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, which runs the counselling rounds that allot every NIT and IIT seat; the seats left after those rounds are filled by the CSAB special rounds. The institute publishes the year's reporting schedule and document list on its Admission 2026 page rather than mailing individual candidates.

Because Durgapur is a centrally funded NIT sitting in West Bengal, half of each branch is set aside for candidates who did their qualifying schooling in the state under the home-state quota, and the other half is open to the rest of the country. In practice a West Bengal applicant clears a given branch at an easier rank than an out-of-state one, which is the single biggest reason two students with similar JEE Main ranks end up in different branches. The integrated M.Sc uses the same JEE Main and JoSAA machinery, while M.Tech entry runs on a GATE score routed through CCMT and doctoral admission on the institute's own test and interview.

Cutoff

Durgapur sets no entrance exam of its own for its undergraduate seats and keeps no management or direct-payment quota, so a branch is decided purely by where your JEE Main rank lands as JoSAA works through its rounds and CSAB mops up the remainder. The number that matters is a pairing rather than a single figure: a branch and a quota together, because the closing rank for computer science under the West Bengal home-state pool is a different number from the same branch in the all-India pool.

Layered on top of that split are the category closing ranks, one each for the general, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST and PwD pools, plus the supernumerary seats for female candidates. Within Durgapur's own order, computer science and electronics and communication close at the tightest ranks, while the core departments the campus was built on, metallurgical and materials engineering and biotechnology among them, admit at noticeably wider ranks, which is where a determined core-branch aspirant finds room. None of those numbers carries over from one year to the next, so an old cutoff table is close to useless here; the figure to trust is this year's final-round closing rank for the exact branch, category and quota you hold.

Placements

The institute reports its placement figures to NIRF every year, and the three-year run for its four-year B.Tech cohorts does not move in one direction. The 2022-23 batch was the high-water mark, with 640 of 776 finishing students placed at a median of Rs 13,70,000, and the following year the median fell back to Rs 11,24,000 with 566 placed, even though the graduating cohort had grown to 810 (NIRF 2025 data return).

Placed579640566
Median salaryRs 8,10,000Rs 13,70,000Rs 11,24,000
Went to higher studies101136244

Two things in that table are worth pausing on. The median has swung, not settled, climbing steeply from Rs 8,10,000 for the 2021-22 batch to Rs 13,70,000 a year later before slipping back again, so a single headline year is a poor guide to what an incoming student should expect. And in 2023-24 the count going to higher studies jumped to 244, well up from 136, at the same time as the placed number dipped, which reads less as a campus that could not place its class and more as a cohort where a larger share chose a master's or a research route over the offers on the table. The postgraduate side that year was tighter still: of 192 finishing M.Tech and PG students, 90 were placed at a median of Rs 11,21,000, close to the B.Tech median, with 102 moving on to higher study, per the same return. The NIRF filing stops at headcounts and the median; it names no recruiter and records no highest package. Those surface only in the institute's own training and placement cell summary, published after a season closes.

Seat Matrix

The undergraduate intake is fixed programme by programme and then split down the middle between the West Bengal home-state pool and the all-India pool. Durgapur's NIRF return records a sanctioned four-year B.Tech intake of 876 seats, with 14 in the five-year integrated M.Sc and 305 across the two-year postgraduate programmes (NIRF 2025 data return). The reservation structure of any centrally funded institute then applies to those seats, the SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PwD categories, with the female-candidate supernumerary seats added on top.

The home-state pool is smaller than the campus's own student body might suggest. Across all years of the four-year B.Tech, the institute reported 3,447 students, of whom 1,381 were from within West Bengal and 1,989 from outside the state, in the same return. Most of the campus, in other words, comes from beyond Bengal through the all-India half of the matrix. How that intake divides by branch and category is not a fixed number: JoSAA republishes the full Durgapur seat matrix every counselling season, and that live sheet is what you set preferences against, not any single total.

Rankings

Durgapur's only entry on the NIRF 2025 tables is in engineering, where it holds the 49th rank on a score of 55.94 (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking). The shape of that score is more telling than the rank itself, because the five parameters NIRF scores are far apart for this institute.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources71.25
Research and Professional Practice38.14
Graduation Outcomes77.92
Outreach and Inclusivity58.39
Perception16.97

Graduation outcomes and teaching resources are the institute's two strongest parameters, both comfortably above its overall score, while perception sits at 16.97, the lowest of the five by a wide margin. That gap is the profile of a campus whose teaching and student results are stronger than its national reputation, which for an applicant is a more useful signal than the headline rank: the education a Durgapur degree reflects is running ahead of the brand the market attaches to it.

Departments

Teaching is organised into fourteen departments, and the department you enter is the real unit of choice here, because it fixes both your four years and your placement pool. The engineering side runs computer science, electrical, electronics and communication, mechanical, civil, chemical, biotechnology, and metallurgical and materials engineering, the last of which carries the institute's oldest and deepest research lineage (Wikipedia).

Around those sit the science and humanities departments that teach the first-year foundation and run their own postgraduate and doctoral work: chemistry, physics, mathematics, earth and environmental studies, humanities and social sciences, and the Department of Management Studies that houses the MBA. The materials and metallurgy strength is the thread worth following for a research-minded applicant, since it is where the campus has produced its most recognised graduates.

Facilities & Infrastructure

At 187 acres the campus is a compact walled township, its teaching blocks, laboratories and halls of residence gathered behind a single eastern gate on Mahatma Gandhi Avenue rather than strung along a public road (Wikipedia). Because the estate is small enough to cross on foot, the central library, the department research laboratories and the residence halls all sit within a short walk of the academic core.

The heavier engineering infrastructure follows the department map, with the metallurgical, materials and mechanical laboratories the most developed given the campus's founding focus. For prospective students the practical read is that the facilities are concentrated where the institute's academic strengths already are, rather than spread thin across a very large estate.

Hostel

A hostel place is close to standard at Durgapur, and its seat rent of Rs 10,000 a semester is already folded into the semester totals given above (fee breakdown). Incoming first-year students are allotted rooms through the institute's hostel administration, and the annual allotment notices are posted on the institute's own site each session rather than settled at admission.

Mess is run and billed by the individual halls rather than as one flat institute charge, so the recurring dining cost sits alongside the hostel rent rather than inside it. That structure means the real monthly outlay in residence varies a little from one hall to the next, which is worth checking against the current hostel notice rather than an old figure.

Faculty

With 283 faculty listed in the NIRF 2025 return across those fourteen departments, teaching and doctoral supervision are run at the department level rather than centrally (NIRF 2025 data return). The institute keeps no single ranked staff directory, so the faculty page of the specific department, metallurgy, electronics, whichever one you are weighing, is what tells you who you would actually study under.

Research depth is easiest to see in the numbers the institute files rather than in a prospectus line. Durgapur reported 135 ongoing sponsored research projects backed by 25 funding agencies in 2023-24, concentrated in its engineering and materials departments, in the same return. For a student weighing a research-oriented branch, that funded-project base is a better guide to where the active work is than any faculty headcount on its own.

Notable Alumni

The institute's public alumni record is short and unusually specialised, and it points almost entirely at materials science rather than at corporate or public life. The names it lists are the materials scientists Bikramjit Basu and Aloke Paul, the materials engineer Kamanio Chattopadhyay, and the author Suvasish Mukhopadhyay (Wikipedia).

Three of those four working in materials is not a coincidence: it tracks the metallurgical and materials engineering department that has been the campus's research core since its REC days. It is a narrower alumni signature than the broad industry-leadership rolls of the older NITs, and an honest one, because the institute has not built its public reputation on a long list of chief executives or public figures.

News & Articles

The only news that moves fast enough to matter to an applicant is the admission cycle itself, and it turns over week by week. Reporting dates, the document checklist and any new notification are kept current on the institute's Admission 2026 page, while the result of each recruiting season is posted by the training and placement cell once it wraps. A fee revision, a shifted counselling deadline or a fresh recruiter list lands on those two official channels first, well ahead of any listing site, so those are the ones to keep open across the season.

College Compare

Against the other NITs, Durgapur's 49th place is honestly mid-table: it sits well behind the front of the system, where NIT Tiruchirappalli ranks 9th and NIT Rourkela 13th on the same 2025 engineering list (NIRF 2025 engineering ranking). Read only on rank, it is not the NIT to reach for if your JEE Main number can clear a higher one.

The comparison that actually decides it for most of its applicants is a home-state one. For a West Bengal student, the real alternatives are IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University inside the state, and Durgapur's case is the combination of a national-institute degree, the home-state seat pool that softens the rank, and a fee bill and location that keep a Bengal family close. A strong rank set on computer science shifts the calculation the other way: at that point Kharagpur, Jadavpur or a higher-placed NIT is the seat worth chasing, and Durgapur slides to the fallback.
