Indian Institute Of Technology, Jodhpur
IIT Jodhpur sits 27th among India's engineering institutions in the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework, and it earns that place from an 852-acre campus on the edge of the Thar desert rather than from any long head start. Founded in 2008, it admits its B.Tech students through JEE Advanced and the JoSAA counselling that follows, and one detail sets its fee apart from most private rivals: the tuition a family pays is scaled to what it earns, dropping to nothing for the lowest income band.
Overview
IIT Jodhpur was set up in 2008 as one of the new Institutes of Technology, and it now runs from a permanent residential campus of 852 acres at N.H. 62, Nagaur Road, Karwar, Jodhpur 342030 in Rajasthan. The campus lies out on the arid plain north of Jodhpur city, which makes it one of the few Institutes of National Importance built into a desert setting rather than a metro or a hill station.
The institute took its statutory shape through the same route as the rest of that founding wave. It began teaching under the mentorship of an older IIT and used a transit campus in Jodhpur before its own campus was ready, and it became a full IIT in law once The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 brought the new institutes under the parent Act. Unlike the schools-based structure some of its peers adopted, Jodhpur is organised into conventional academic departments, which shapes how a student here belongs to a single discipline from the day they arrive.
Courses & Fees
What you can study at Karwar spans the four-year B.Tech, master's degrees and the doctorate, and the entrance test that opens each one differs by level, as the table lays out.
| Programme | Level | Entrance route |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech | Undergraduate | JEE Advanced, then JoSAA |
| B.S. | Undergraduate | JEE Advanced, then JoSAA |
| M.Tech | Postgraduate | GATE |
| M.Sc | Postgraduate | IIT JAM and institute selection |
| MBA | Postgraduate | School of Management admission process |
| M.Des | Postgraduate | Institute selection |
| PhD / dual-degree research | Doctoral | Institute selection and national fellowships |
The B.Tech fee is where Jodhpur diverges most from a private engineering college, because its tuition is means-tested rather than flat. For 2025-26 the tuition for B.Tech and B.S. students is set to zero when annual family income is below Rs 1 lakh, Rs 33,333 a semester when that income falls between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 1,00,000 a semester above Rs 5 lakh. SC, ST and PwD students are exempted from tuition altogether. On top of tuition every student pays a fixed set of charges shown below.
| Charge (per semester unless noted) | Hosteller | Day scholar |
|---|---|---|
| Admission fee (one time) | Rs 3,800 | Rs 3,800 |
| Convocation fee (one time) | Rs 3,000 | Rs 3,000 |
| Semester fee | Rs 27,250 | Rs 20,000 |
| Refundable deposit (one time) | Rs 8,000 | Rs 8,000 |
Postgraduate seats cost far less than the top B.Tech band. M.Tech full-time regular tuition is Rs 13,000 a semester, an M.Sc regular seat is Rs 6,500, and a regular PhD is Rs 10,000, while the two-year MBA admitted from 2025 is billed at Rs 2,25,000 a semester. The one-time and semester charges above apply on top of these tuition figures, and the refundable deposit is returned when a student leaves.
Admissions
You do not apply to IIT Jodhpur for a B.Tech seat; the institute never receives a direct application. The chain runs from a qualifying JEE Main score to a JEE Advanced All India Rank, and it closes in JoSAA counselling, where your rank meets the branch preferences you have locked and only then can an allocation to Jodhpur follow. There is no Jodhpur-set entrance paper, and the category reservations and supernumerary seats run on the common IIT rulebook, not on anything this campus adds of its own.
Postgraduate admission splits by programme. The M.Tech route asks for a valid GATE score; the M.Sc seats come mainly from IIT JAM together with the institute's own shortlisting; the School of Management fills its MBA through the process it notifies; and PhD scholars enter by institute selection backed by national fellowships. Since each of these opens and closes on its own calendar, the live notification on the institute's admissions pages is the one to plan around, not last year's dates.
Cutoff
No single "IIT Jodhpur cutoff" exists to be looked up, because the decision to admit or reject a B.Tech candidate is made inside JoSAA's national counselling and not on the Karwar campus. A seat instead comes down to a closing rank, the rank of the last student admitted to a given branch in a given category, and the figure that matters to you is the one at the round your own rank can plausibly reach.
Two things specific to Jodhpur push those closing ranks around. The institute admits a fairly small B.Tech class, which leaves each branch with only a handful of seats per category, and a handful of seats can close at very different ranks from one round to the next. Computer science attracts the strongest applicants here, as everywhere, and stays the hardest branch to secure, while several of the others close at ranks a determined JEE Advanced qualifier can realistically target. Use last year's closing rank for your precise branch and category as a rough guide held loosely, because at an institute climbing the tables these ranks tend to tighten rather than ease from one cycle to the next.
Placements
For IIT Jodhpur, the placement figure worth trusting is the median in its NIRF return, since the median marks where the middle graduate of a full batch landed while a lone "highest package" marks only the luckiest one. Its 2023-24 undergraduate cohort recorded a median of Rs 12,00,000, with 322 of 418 who finished in the minimum time placed and 94 more leaving for higher studies. Set the last three batches beside each other and a pattern emerges: the class keeps enlarging while the median it clears has drifted down from its 2022-23 peak.
| Graduating batch | Graduated in stipulated time | Placed | Median salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 207 | 164 | Rs 15,00,000 |
| 2022-23 | 312 | 256 | Rs 16,00,000 |
| 2023-24 | 418 | 322 | Rs 12,00,000 |
Read the 2023-24 dip as a bigger class walking into a tighter market, not as a campus losing ground: it was the largest of the three batches, its median stepped down, and the number choosing to study further rather than take a job climbed to 94. Master's outcomes sit below undergraduate ones, which holds across the IIT system. Postgraduate pay lands lower still, and of the 159 who completed a postgraduate programme in 2023-24, 122 were placed and 36 continued into further study, on a median of Rs 8,00,013. A single eye-catching offer would flatter this page; the median will not, and that is exactly why it is the number a family should carry into a comparison with any rival institute.
Seat Matrix
Jodhpur's sanctioned intake has moved around year to year as the campus matured, and the split by branch is reset at every counselling cycle. Its NIRF return lists 510 sanctioned four-year undergraduate seats for 2023-24, after 530 in 2022-23 and 490 in 2021-22, plus 276 seats in its two-year postgraduate programmes. Treat that institute-wide count as a cap and nothing finer: it reveals nothing about the branch-by-branch allocation, the division between gender-neutral and female-supernumerary seats, or the reserved-category shares.
Because each branch ends up with only a small slice of that total, the reliable step is to pull up the JoSAA seat matrix for the current year rather than estimate a branch figure from the sanctioned total. Added across all year-groups, the same 2025 filing puts 1,930 students on the four-year undergraduate programmes and 454 on the two-year postgraduate ones, with the doctoral cohort sitting above that.
Rankings
IIT Jodhpur's national standing rests almost entirely on the government's own framework, where its engineering placing is its strongest single credential. It ranked 27th in engineering on a score of 61.31 in NIRF 2025, and 66th overall on a score of 53.17.
| Framework category | NIRF 2025 rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering | 27 | 61.31 |
| Overall | 66 | 53.17 |
Underneath that one engineering number the profile is markedly lopsided. Its teaching-and-resources sub-score of 86.92 is its clear strength, its graduation-outcome sub-score of 70.43 and outreach sub-score of 66.41 are solid, its research sub-score of 44.03 is middling, and its perception sub-score of 12.93 is the weakest part of the profile. That gap is no surprise for an institution barely a decade and a half old and sited away from the big metros: a thin perception score alongside its high teaching-and-resources marks is close to what age and geography would produce, and perception is the sub-score likeliest to climb as its graduates reach senior positions.
Departments
IIT Jodhpur teaches through conventional academic departments rather than the broad schools some newer IITs chose, so a student here sits within a single discipline. The departments span engineering, the natural sciences, and the humanities and social sciences.
| Department | Broad area |
|---|---|
| Aerospace Engineering | Engineering |
| Bioscience & Bioengineering | Engineering and life sciences |
| Chemical Engineering | Engineering |
| Civil and Infrastructure Engineering | Engineering |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Engineering |
| Electrical Engineering | Engineering |
| Electronics Engineering | Engineering |
| Energy and Automotive Engineering | Engineering |
| Environmental and Sustainability Engineering | Engineering |
| Materials Engineering | Engineering |
| Mechanical Engineering | Engineering |
| Chemistry | Natural sciences |
| Mathematics | Natural sciences |
| Physics | Natural sciences |
| Economics | Humanities and social sciences |
Alongside these departments the institute runs schools and centres, including its management, design and interdisciplinary units, which is where its MBA, M.Des and several of its research programmes sit. The department a B.Tech student enters is decided in JoSAA, so the branch order submitted at counselling is what ties an admitted candidate to one of the engineering departments above.
Facilities & Infrastructure
IIT Jodhpur is a fully residential campus laid out across 852 acres on Nagaur Road at Karwar, so its lecture halls, laboratories, hostels and faculty housing sit together on one site out on the desert plain. The scale of the land is the defining physical feature: it was raised from open ground for the institute, not inherited from an older college, so its teaching and research buildings are new-build stock.
The clearest measure of how much has been put into that campus is the institute's own research and capital activity. Its 2025 NIRF filing records 360 sponsored research projects drawing on 74 funding agencies in 2023-24, and 103 consultancy engagements in the same year, the kind of funded work that only lands where the laboratories and equipment already exist. A prospective student after hands-on research can read that volume as a sign the facilities are in place; the institute keeps the current inventory of its labs, library and sports and hostel blocks on its own site, which is the source to consult before a visit.
Hostel
A hostel place at IIT Jodhpur comes with the seat; there is no separate accommodation form to file, because the campus at Karwar was built to house everyone who studies there. Enrolment registers each student as a resident, which the site's location on the open desert plain, a fair way out from Jodhpur city, all but demands. The refundable deposit and the semester charges set out under fees are collected with the academic bill and pay for the residential side of life on campus.
Board and lodging are revised each session and published with the annual fee notice, so the figure a first-year student should budget for is the current hostel and mess charge on that notice rather than any older number floating on an aggregator. Because a place in hall is allotted with the seat, an admitted B.Tech student does not compete separately for accommodation the way they might at a city college that houses only some of its intake.
Faculty
The teaching staff has grown alongside the student body. Jodhpur's 2025 NIRF submission records 289 faculty members, and for someone weighing an offer, that number counts less for its size than for the supervision and research it makes possible.
For an institute this new, the doctoral base is substantial. The same return lists 788 full-time PhD scholars, and it is that population of research students, together with the funded projects and consultancy the filing details, that gives a B.Tech or master's student a realistic shot at joining an active group. Between the teaching-heavy tilt of its sub-scores and the scale of its sponsored research, the picture is of a faculty geared to output in the lecture hall and the laboratory rather than to reputation.
Notable Alumni
The first cohort walked through the gates in 2008, which means Jodhpur's oldest B.Tech alumni only graduated around the middle of the last decade, with its master's and PhD alumni more recent again. At fifteen-odd years out at most, those careers are still being built rather than written up in honour rolls, and a research-led institute tends to send its strongest graduates into labs and engineering teams where standing is earned quietly rather than in the headlines. This page will not hang a famous name on the institute without a record to back it, so the section waits until verifiable ones exist; the constraint is the age of the place, not the calibre of the people it has taught.
News & Articles
IIT Jodhpur publishes its own streams of notices, covering admissions, recruitment, tenders and events on campus, and it is the academic-affairs area of the site that carries the dated circulars on fees, registration and cut-off dates. If you are in the middle of an application, watch those official pages first: a revised fee notice or a shifted counselling date shows up there ahead of any coaching site or news aggregator that later restates it.
College Compare
The fair peer group for IIT Jodhpur is the batch of newer IITs it grew up with, not the decades-old institutes that started far ahead of it. Its NIRF 2025 engineering score of 61.31 put it 27th, just below IIT Mandi at 26th on 62.08 and IIT Gandhinagar at 25th on 62.31, and just above NIT Warangal at 28th on 61.05. So little separates the three that a few hundredths of a point set the sequence.
That near-tie is the point. The decision does not rest on who sits one rung higher, but on how a specific branch, the placement median and the feel of each campus stack up for you in particular, and on those axes Jodhpur, Mandi and Gandhinagar genuinely diverge. Against the larger, longer-established IITs, Jodhpur trades away sheer scale and a deep alumni base and offers instead a big campus built from scratch, tuition pegged to income, and a desert-edge address that will appeal strongly to some students and not at all to others. Weigh that exchange honestly before committing.
Contact & Location
The institute's permanent home is at N.H. 62, Nagaur Road, Karwar, Jodhpur 342030, in Rajasthan, out on the plain to the north of the city. Contact numbers, the email addresses of individual departments and offices, and the directions the institute prefers you take are all kept current on its own website, which is the source to trust given how far Karwar sits from the city centre.
The city of Jodhpur has good rail and air links from around the country, and the last stretch out to Karwar is a drive beyond the built-up area. The campus is a secured place where people actually live and work, closed to casual foot traffic, so anyone hoping to see it should write to the institute beforehand and clear entry at the gate and any access to the halls.
