Coep Technological University

Maharashtra's admission brochure lists most government and aided engineering institutes in groups. COEP Technological University gets a row of its own, and the numbers in it belong to no one else: 80 per cent of its first year seats go to Maharashtra candidates at state level and 20 per cent to All India candidates, with nothing set aside for a home university zone. That single line settles most of what an applicant needs to know. There is no JoSAA choice filling here and no institute application form for a regular seat; the Maharashtra CET Cell allots every one of those seats, on an MHT-CET merit number for the larger share and on JEE Main marks for the smaller one.

Overview

The institution is far older than the university it now is. Teaching began in July 1854 as the Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School, training subordinate officers for the Public Works Department. It became College of Engineering, Poona in 1911, awarded a Licentiate in Civil Engineering under the University of Bombay before moving to the University of Pune, and started its degree courses in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering in 1908, 1912 and 1932. The same page places it third oldest among engineering colleges in India and in Asia, behind College of Engineering Guindy and IIT Roorkee.

Autonomy came in 2003-04. University status came from the legislature: the Maharashtra COEP Technological University Act was passed as Maharashtra Act No. XXXV of 2022 and first published in the Maharashtra Government Gazette on the 10th May 2022, establishing it as a specialised technological unitary public university. Unitary is the operative word. There are no affiliated colleges to examine and no distant campuses to fund, so everything below describes one address on Wellesley Road.

Courses & Fees

Nine engineering branches and one planning programme make up the undergraduate offer, and the university publishes the seat count for each along with the exact split between the two entrance routes.

Above that sits a large postgraduate layer. The sanctioned intake notice for 2026-27 lists M.Tech and M.Planning specialisations running from construction management and structural engineering through data sciences, VLSI, automotive technology and mechatronics, with 72 seats in town and country planning and 60 in data sciences as the two biggest. Two of those specialisations, data sciences and automotive systems, are open only to working professionals with at least two years of experience after graduation, and their seats sit entirely in the sponsored column.

The fee is where a student has to do real work, because the university does not put a number on a web page. Each year's structure is issued as a signed notice, scanned, and posted to the accounts section of the university site, with separate sheets for first year, second year, third year, final year, foreign and NRI candidates, M.Tech, MBA, PhD and each PG diploma. The first year sheet is built from six heads: tuition, development, examination, a partial alumni association membership, a disaster relief contribution and a refundable caution money deposit. What changes across its columns is not the branch but the category, and whether the seat came through CAP or through the university's own later round. There is no summary figure to lift, so the practical route is to open the sheet for your year and category, then read the amount printed on the acknowledgement letter issued after document scrutiny, which is the figure the demand draft has to match, because no partial payment and no other mode of payment is accepted.

Admissions

The route is the state's, not the university's, and not the national one. Maharashtra's CET Cell is the competent authority that runs the centralised admission process and directs allotted candidates to COEP Technological University alongside the government, aided and unaided institutions in its list. A JEE Main score does not reach this campus through JoSAA; it reaches it through the All India seats inside those same CAP rounds.

Eligibility for the Maharashtra share is set in the same brochure: pass 10+2 with physics and mathematics compulsory and a third listed subject, score at least forty five per cent in those subjects together, or forty per cent for reserved category, economically weaker section and persons with disability candidates from Maharashtra, and hold a non zero PCM score in MHT-CET. Board marks qualify you to apply; they do not rank you.

After the CAP rounds close, the university runs its own ACAP or spot rounds for whatever is left, registered online only, on the schedule the state cell notifies. A seat won there is still a merit seat, but the fee column it falls into is a different one, which is why applicants who treat the spot round as a cheap late entry are often surprised.

Postgraduate entry works on its own logic. M.Tech and M.Planning admission runs on GATE through CAP, and for candidates without a GATE score the university conducts UCET, its own common entrance test, on a syllabus of common mathematics plus a discipline specific paper set as per the respective GATE exam. MBA admission runs through the CET Cell as well. The university's own admission page carries a warning worth repeating in full: all admissions are made purely on inter se merit, and any involvement of agents, middlemen or influencers will not be entertained under any circumstances.

Cutoff

Closing figures here are state general merit numbers with the MHT-CET percentile in brackets, except for the All India row, which is ranked on JEE Main. The university publishes a round by round sheet for every branch and every seat type. These are the first round closings for 2025-26, for the two rows most applicants are watching.

Branch, CAP Round I 2025-26All India seat, JEE merit number (score)General open state seat, MHT-CET merit number (percentile)
Computer Engineering216 (99.4517366)243 (99.8985029)
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning312 (99.3357090)352 (99.8616482)
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering312 (99.3357090)736 (99.7297297)
Electrical Engineering1212 (98.4061304)1481 (99.5084539)
Mechanical Engineering1580 (98.0618894)1756 (99.4352449)
Instrumentation and Control Engineering1453 (98.1860742)1814 (99.4148380)
Manufacturing Science and Engineering2643 (97.1729503)3105 (99.0556065)
Civil Engineering3436 (96.4632740)4694 (98.6211176)
Metallurgy and Material Technology3583 (96.3492020)5522 (98.4056300)

Two rows in that sheet are worth more than the computer engineering line everyone reads first. The first is the spread: the gap between computer engineering and metallurgy is wider than the gap between many institutions, so a percentile that is nowhere near a seat in one branch is comfortable in another under the same roof. The second is that the ladies open state seat closed tighter than the general open one in computer engineering, at merit number 233 on a 99.9013320 percentile, because that column is filled from a smaller and self selected pool.

Later rounds loosen, and by how much is the useful part. By the fourth round of the same cycle the general open state seat in computer engineering closed at merit number 913 on 99.6725154, electronics and telecommunication at 1332 on 99.5546231 and mechanical at 2281 on 99.2859853. Civil and artificial intelligence had no general open allotment left to make in that round at all. A candidate whose percentile sits between the round one and round four numbers is not out of the running in July; they are simply not a round one admission.

Placements

The university's training and placement cell publishes no average package and no highest package. What exists is the return it files with the Ministry of Education, and that reports medians.

Batch graduatingGraduated in minimum stipulated timePlacedMedian salaryWent to higher studies
2023-24, four year UG741587Rs 10,50,000124
2022-23, four year UG756602Rs 9,75,00080
2021-22, four year UG714577Rs 9,70,000135
2023-24, two year PG217140Rs 6,60,00040
2022-23, two year PG275180Rs 6,50,00038
2021-22, two year PG375329Rs 6,96,00035

Read the undergraduate rows as a rate rather than a headline. Placement covered a little under four in five of the students who finished on time in the most recent year filed, and the median moved up while the count placed moved down. The postgraduate rows moved the other way and matter more if you are choosing an M.Tech here: the class shrank, the share placed fell from most of the cohort to under two thirds, and the median has sat near the same level for three years while the undergraduate median climbed past it.

There is a second set of numbers under the same institution's name. Filing for the state public university ranking, which covers the whole university rather than its engineering programmes alone, it reported 778 undergraduates finishing on time in 2023-24, 594 of them placed and 154 going on to higher studies, on the same median. Neither return is wrong; they count different populations. Any figure quoted for this university without saying which return it came from is a figure you cannot use.

Seat Matrix

Ten programmes, one allocation rule, and the same rule applied to every branch. The intake table above carries the branch level split; what makes it unusual is visible only against the rest of the state. In the brochure's allocation table for first year engineering, autonomous government and government aided institutions fill 100 per cent of their seats at state level with no All India quota, ICT Mumbai and Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University Nagpur run 70 per cent state and 30 per cent All India, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University Lonere runs 85 per cent state with a Konkan region share, and COEP Technological University runs 80 per cent state and 20 per cent All India. It is the only institution in that table on those proportions, and it carries no home university and other than home university division, so a candidate from Nagpur competes on the same list as one from Pune.

The other seat rule to know is supernumerary. The state's tuition fee waiver scheme adds up to 5 per cent of sanctioned intake per course as extra seats, open only to Maharashtra candidates whose parents' annual income from all sources is less than Rs 8 Lakh, and the waiver covers tuition only, with every other fee paid by the student. Those seats appear in the cutoff sheets as their own column and often close at a percentile close to the open seat.

Postgraduate allocation follows a different rule again: for engineering, planning and allied courses, government, aided and university institutions including COEP Technological University fill 75 per cent of seats as non sponsored and 25 per cent as sponsored, and management courses at the same institutions run 85 per cent state level and 15 per cent All India.

Rankings

Two Ministry of Education lists carry this university in 2025, and the pair is more informative than either alone.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankOverall scoreTeaching, learning and resourcesResearch and professional practiceGraduation outcomesOutreach and inclusivityPerception

State public universities4352.0457.7538.3163.7452.2952.36
Parameter scores as published: engineering table, state public university table.

Graduation outcomes at 67.69 is the strongest parameter in the engineering row and research and professional practice at 24.82 the weakest, the profile of a teaching campus whose students finish and place while its published research has not kept pace. Perception at 28.82 is the outlier, and the size of it only shows against the neighbours. Of the ten institutions ranked 85 to 95 in the same table, only NIT Kurukshetra at 17.45 and Panjab University at 15.75 come anywhere close, and seven of the ten score below 10. A hundred and seventy years of engineers named Visvesvaraya and Kailath are doing work in that column that the rest of the score sheet does not credit.

Departments

The academics menu groups thirteen departments under two schools. The School of Engineering and Technology holds civil, computer science and engineering, electrical, electronics and telecommunication, instrumentation and control, mechanical, metallurgy and material, manufacturing engineering and industrial management, and planning. The School of Multidisciplinary Sciences, Humanities and Management Studies holds applied sciences and humanities, physics, mathematics and management studies, which is where the MBA is taught. The university records that the country's first department of electronics and telecommunication was established here, and that it produced the country's first doctorate in telecommunications.

Facilities & Infrastructure

What a campus is actually made of shows up in its capital accounts, and COEP Tech files them annually. Nearly all of 2023-24 went into fabric: Rs 25,56,55,632 on classrooms, seminar and conference halls and laboratory space. Books, journals and e-resources took Rs 4,60,40,965 and the workshops Rs 2,50,67,214. Laboratory equipment and software got only Rs 2,65,81,925, roughly a quarter of the Rs 9,52,52,546 spent under that head two years earlier. The vintage of the kit in any one laboratory therefore turns on which year that department's turn came round.

The disability facilities block of that return is answered in bands rather than in addresses, which is useful up to a point and no further. Over 80 per cent of the buildings carry a ramp or a lift, and the same share has a toilet designed for disabled students. Walking aids, wheelchairs and transport from one block to another are all recorded as available. A candidate with a mobility need still has to ask which building their own department teaches in. On sustainability it reports rooftop rainwater harvesting with recharge wells, solar installations and composting for food waste. Beyond the teaching blocks sit the Knowledge Resource Center, a virtual laboratory built under the Ministry of Education's national mission on ICT, and the Bhau Institute of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership, which the university describes as incubating about 112 start-ups on campus. Students built the Swayam pico satellite that ISRO launched in 2016.

Hostel

Hostel admission is competitive and merit driven, not automatic. For continuing undergraduates the merit list is prepared on CGPA with no backlog courses, students carrying backlogs get second preference, and more than three backlogs disqualifies a student from allotment altogether. That notification for 2025-26 set the fee for two semesters at Rs 45,000 per student, Rs 1,15,000 for NRI, foreign national, Gulf and PIO students, with a refundable hostel security deposit of Rs 10,000 and a refundable mess security deposit of Rs 7,000 paid separately to the mess at room allotment, against a second year boys chart of 234 seats and a girls chart of 146.

For the 2026-27 direct second year intake the department notified Rs 50,000 per student with the same refundable security deposit of Rs 10,000, mess fees and mess deposit payable at actuals to the respective mess office, against 34 seats reserved for boys and 22 for girls across all branches, with fees paid online through SBI Collect. Applications, merit list, grievance window, fee payment and room allotment all ran inside four days, which is the part to plan for.

Faculty

Two counts exist and they do not agree, because they are drawn on different bases. The university's own account gives 167 regular faculty including professors of practice, of whom 116 hold doctorates, alongside adjunct faculty drawn from industry. The return filed for the 2025 engineering ranking lists 236 faculty members entered. Neither figure is reconciled to the other on any published page.

Consultancy is where this faculty visibly spends its time, and it is the reason the ranking's weakest parameter reads worse than the campus does. The 2023-24 return sets 1,238 consultancy jobs for 863 client organisations, worth Rs 13,12,33,513, against 162 sponsored research projects from 51 funding agencies worth Rs 23,13,84,775. In 2021-22 the same head carried 688 consultancy projects, so that count has nearly doubled in two years. A department taking on seven or eight paid client jobs for every sponsored research project is doing something no publication count will register, and an intending research student should weigh that as a caution as much as a strength. Doctoral study is substantially part time, with 103 full time and 185 part time scholars enrolled, and 18 full time and 26 part time completions in 2023-24.

Notable Alumni

The university names Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, in whose honour Engineers Day is observed in India, at the head of its own roll. Alongside him it lists Thomas Kailath, Vijay Kelkar, S. G. Dhande, Leena Poonawala, C. K. N. Patel, B. G. Shirke, Madhavrao A. Chitale, Haresh Shah, H. K. Firodia, Harish Mehta, B. S. Sonde, V. R. Katti, Ramesh Raskar, Mahantesh Hiremath, Laxman Narasimhan and Gaur Gopal Das. The list is the university's own and reads as such: it spans water policy, semiconductor physics, construction, computing research and corporate leadership rather than one industry.

News & Articles

Nothing on this campus is announced in a newsroom. Admission notices, CAP reporting instructions, ACAP spot round schedules, hostel merit lists and examination timetables are posted as dated PDFs on the university's admissions and notices pages, often with a window of two or three days between publication and deadline. During an admission cycle those pages, and the state cell's own portal, are the only two places worth refreshing.

College Compare

Comparison by rank alone is misleading here, because the two lists this university appears on place it against completely different sets of institutions.

In the engineering list its immediate neighbours are Chitkara University at rank 89 on 47.34 and SR University at rank 91 on 47.16, and the three arrive at almost the same total by different routes. Chitkara scores 49.46 on research and professional practice where COEP Tech scores 24.82; SR University scores 21.78 there and 8.76 on perception, against COEP Tech's 28.82. Inside Maharashtra the same list carries IIT Bombay at rank 3, Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai at 41, VNIT Nagpur at 44 on 56.58, Symbiosis International at 46, COEP Technological University at 90 and the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology at 92, and of those six, COEP is the only state public university.

Against its own kind the picture changes. Among Maharashtra institutions in the state public university list, Savitribai Phule Pune University is 11th, Mumbai University 12th, COEP Technological University 43rd and Shivaji University Kolhapur 45th. The three others are large multi faculty universities with affiliated college networks; this one is a single technical campus, which is why its graduation outcomes and perception scores read differently from theirs.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council placed the university in the A+ band on its first accreditation cycle, on a certificate valid to January 2028, issued in the name it carried when it was still a college affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University. Programme level accreditation is separate and is held from the National Board of Accreditation, which the university publishes for its undergraduate engineering programmes. That accreditation runs branch by branch and expires branch by branch, so the question to ask about your own branch is not whether the university is accredited but whether that programme's term is current in the year you would graduate.

Aid

Scholarships

Fee relief here works in three layers, and only the first is built into the fee sheet itself.

The state layer reimburses tuition rather than waiving it at the counter. Candidates from SC, ST, VJNT, OBC, SBC, EWS and SEBC categories, orphans, persons with disability and PMSSS candidates apply on the MahaDBT portal, and the government pays the tuition to the institution; the fee sheet marks those columns and the reporting notice tells students to apply within the stipulated time or pay the full open category amount themselves. Female candidates carry two distinct entitlements. The state reserves 30 per cent of seats for female candidates under a Government Resolution of 17th April, 2000, and, separately, the university circulates the Higher and Technical Education Department scheme under which women students from the open, EWS, SBC and SEBC categories get their tuition and examination fees waived in full, provided they hold a Maharashtra domicile certificate, took admission through the centralised process and not at institute level, and apply on MahaDBT. The condition that catches people is the second one: a seat taken in the university's own later round does not qualify.

The third layer is private and larger than most applicants expect. In 2025-26 the university recorded more than 30 NGOs, trusts and foundations supporting 718 students with Rs 4,02,36,942, plus a COEP Alumni Association scholarship reaching 236 students with Rs 1,16,33,155, for a combined 954 students and Rs 5,18,70,097. The same page records support in kind, chiefly laptops, 295 of them across the alumni association, Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled and Mudita Alliance. An SBI branch on campus handles education loans.

MahaDBT is not a minority experience on this campus. Among the undergraduates counted in the engineering return, 1,379 have their full tuition fee reimbursed from state and central government funds; institution funds cover another 342 and private bodies 164.

Voices

Student Reviews

No verified student reviews are published here, and an average star rating would be worse than none, because the students it would average are not paying the same fee, did not enter through the same round and are not taught in the same building.

Anyone who can reach a student already on this campus should spend the conversation on four specifics instead. Whether the National Board of Accreditation term covering their own branch is current or has lapsed between cycles, because COEP Tech holds that award branch by branch and not as a whole. Whether a MahaDBT reimbursement in their category actually landed that year or sat pending until the semester ended. Whether the equipment in their laboratory is the batch bought when the purchase budget was at its peak or the one that has been waiting since. And, from anyone admitted in an ACAP round, what the fee actually came to against a CAP admitted classmate in the same category.
