Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam - 629 165, Kanyakumari Dist.

Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu Est. 1964 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#63

Getting into this Kanyakumari college is settled by one number you already have. The 2026-27 provisional rank list for B.Com (Aided) runs from 393 marks at the top to 191 at the foot of its academic stream, and every applicant on it is ranked on nothing but a Higher Secondary total. No entrance test sits in front of that list. What follows is the paperwork, the seat counts and the fee heads that the college itself publishes, checkable against the pages linked in place.

Overview

Bishop Rt. Rev. I.R.H. Gnanadason inaugurated the college on 6th August 1964 as a men's college running a Pre-University Class of 171 students with 13 teaching staff, on 32 acres that a London Missionary Society missionary from Newcastle, Rev. James Emlyn, had bought and the Kanniyakumari Diocese of the Church of South India set apart as an endowment to meet the university's land requirement, according to the college's own history. It admitted women from 1977, took the name Nesamony Memorial Christian College in 1984 after the parliamentarian A. Nesamony, and moved to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in 1991 after spells under Madras and Madurai Kamaraj. Degrees, syllabus and end-semester examinations still belong to that university, which is why the college's notice board carries M.S. University timetables and result links rather than its own.

Two accreditation lines are worth reading together before the rank is. The college's NAAC record shows a first cycle graded B+ at 2.80 in 2003, a second graded A at 3.01 in 2014, and a third cycle in 2025 graded B++ at 2.95, so the current grade sits below the one it held a decade ago.

The rank moves the same way. The college was placed 42nd nationally in NIRF 2024 on a score of 57.03, then 63rd in 2025 on a higher score of 57.67, by its own ranking table, which also records 88th in 2023 and 91st in 2022. Scoring better and finishing lower is what a crowded band looks like from the inside.

Where those 2025 points come from is the more useful reading, and it is lopsided. Teaching, learning and resources carries 69.87 on the NIRF 2025 college table and research and professional practice 68.56, which is where the place earns its rank. Graduation outcomes hold it down at 55.72 and outreach and inclusivity at 55.12, while perception returns a flat 0.00. A rural aided college with a working research profile and no national name is the shape that produces that spread, and the perception zero is worth knowing before you weigh this rank against a college whose reputation carries it.

Courses & Fees

The teaching runs on two parallel tracks, government-aided and self-financing. The courses list puts twelve undergraduate degrees on the aided side and eight on the self-financing side, with the postgraduate side almost entirely self-financing apart from M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Physics and M.A. History. MCA and MBA are the two AICTE-approved programmes. Four subjects sit on both tracks, B.A. English, B.Sc. Mathematics, B.Sc. Computer Science and B.Com, so at this college each of those is two separate admissions to the same degree.

The handbook gives the short answer on tuition, together with the small charges that surround it.

Fee headAmount
Tuition, undergraduate aided coursesExempted
Late payment of a semester feeRs 1 per day
Readmission after a name is struck off the rollsRs 5
Duplicate transfer certificateRs 500
Bonafide certificateRs 50
Certificate from college records, passed-out studentsRs 100 plus search fee
Student aid fund contribution, per studentRs 2

The prospectus adds the per-course sheet the handbook leaves out. It is dated 2022-2023 and it covers the aided track only, and it prints an ellipsis instead of a figure wherever a head does not apply, which on the undergraduate rows is the tuition column the handbook already exempts.

Aided course, prospectus fee sheetTuitionScience feeSpecial fee
B.A.--Rs 509
B.Sc. Mathematics-Rs 40Rs 254
B.Sc. Physics-Rs 130Rs 459
B.Sc. Chemistry-Rs 175Rs 484
B.Sc. Botany-Rs 175Rs 459

M.Sc. MathematicsRs 375Rs 244-
M.Sc. PhysicsRs 375Rs 250Rs 244
M.A. HistoryRs 250Rs 244-

The same page prices what every first-year student pays once, on either track: an entrance fee of Rs 100, a recognition fee of Rs 100, an admission fee of Rs 5, Rs 50 for each Higher Secondary certificate verified, Rs 51 to the Flag Day fund, Rs 20 to the Youth Red Cross Society, Rs 10 for NSS and Re 1 for the Harijan Seva Sangam.

What no college document prints is a tuition figure for a self-financing course. The prospectus sheet stops at the aided rows, and the online fee portal asks for a roll number in capitals before it will show a bill, so a self-financing applicant has to ring the office number in the contact table below to get the figure.

Seats are published, though, and the picture they give is unusually candid. The programme table in the college's NAAC Self Study Report lists sanctioned strength beside students actually admitted, subject by subject.

Commerce and computing fill; the language and humanities classrooms do not. B.C.A., B.Sc. Chemistry, one of the two B.Sc. Computer Science sections and one of the two B.Com sections each took every seat they were given, while B.A. Tamil took barely a third of its strength and B.A. Tourism and Hospitality Management admitted nobody at all. The postgraduate rows in the same report repeat the split.

Admissions

Admission is made under the Tamil Nadu government order for the year, and the college admission policy states the ranking rule in one line: the list is drawn on the marks obtained in the subject component out of a total of 400 under Part-III of the Higher Secondary examination. The upper age limit for an undergraduate seat is 21 as on 1st July, community certificates issued by the Tamil Nadu government must be produced in original at the interview, and the application has to reach the Principal within 10 working days of the Plus Two results. Marks are verified afterwards with the Director of Government Examinations, and a bogus mark sheet costs the seat and invites criminal action.

Reservation here starts from a smaller pool than at most Tamil Nadu colleges, because half the seats are held for the community that runs the institution.

CategoryShare of seats
Minority quota, community running the college50%
Open Competition31%
Backward Classes26.5%
Backward Classes Muslim3.5%
Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities20%
Scheduled Castes, including SCA18%
Scheduled Tribes1%

That same policy reserves 3% of seats for physically handicapped candidates, six seats for children of ex-servicemen of Tamil Nadu origin, 3% for sportspersons at undergraduate level and 2% at postgraduate level, and one seat for an outstanding NCC candidate whose application a unit commander forwards, as it sets out.

The mechanics differ by track. Aided seats are filled through counselling and an interview, self-financing seats through a separate application for each course, and the step-by-step application sheet makes one concession: the aided science courses share a single application, while every other course, aided or self-financing, needs its own. For the current cycle, first-year undergraduate classes began on 19th June 2026 and first-year postgraduate classes on 6th July 2026, each opening with an orientation programme.

Cutoff

Each list heads its marks column Cut off Marks, but nothing is fixed before you apply: the bar is wherever the last admitted candidate lands once that year's applicants are ranked. What the college does is publish the finished list in full, programme by programme, names and marks together. Undergraduate marks below are the Part-III subject totals the admission policy scores out of 400, and the figures are the top and bottom of each list for 2026-2027 as printed.

Sources: B.Com, B.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Physics and M.A. History provisional lists.

Two things follow from the shape of those lists. Aided postgraduate admission is ranked on your undergraduate CGPA rather than on a written test, so a degree result already in hand is the whole application. And the B.Sc. Computer Science list is split in two before ranking begins, one list for applicants who studied Mathematics without Computer Science at school and one for those who studied both, which means your Plus Two subject combination decides which queue you stand in rather than how far up it you land.

Placements

The placement figure here is small; the higher-study figure is not. The college's NIRF 2025 data submission records 695 undergraduates completing within the minimum stipulated time in 2023-24, of whom 114 took a job at a median salary of Rs 180000 while 384 moved on to another course. Its postgraduate row for that year reads 423 completing, 86 placed at a median of Rs 192000, and 154 continuing to study. Three filed years of undergraduate medians run Rs 120000, Rs 156000 and Rs 180000, so the figure has gained half its value in two cycles while the number of undergraduates placed went 20, then 44, then 114.

That table stops at 2022-23 and the cell's annual reports stop a year earlier still at 2021-22; the only later thing it posts is a 2023-24 photograph of students placed at Foxconn, with no count attached. Nothing recent is therefore auditable against the NIRF filing. Regional banking, insurance, retail and IT services are what the record shows, at salaries the NIRF medians describe accurately. Departments

The subject you apply to may be taught by one of two departments with the same name, because the aided and self-financing streams are staffed and headed separately. The faculty directory is filtered by stream for exactly that reason, and it lists Tamil, Malayalam, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Botany, Zoology, History, Economics, Commerce, Library and Physical Education on the aided side, and Tamil, Malayalam, English, Hindi, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Science and Application, Botany, Zoology, Physical Education, Economics, Tourism, Commerce and Management Studies on the self-financing side. History and Library exist only as aided departments; Hindi, Tourism, Management Studies and Computer Science and Application only as self-financing ones.

Research is concentrated rather than spread. The college counts 12 research centres and 78 research guides, a heavier research footprint than the graduation-outcome half of its NIRF score would lead you to expect, and its Self Study Report describes twelve research rooms with a dedicated lobby for scholars.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus is compact for its enrolment and the NAAC Self Study Report says so plainly: 14 acres of main campus with 21637 square metres built up, holding 260 rooms across ten blocks, 10 laboratories, 12 research rooms, 10 department libraries besides the central one, and 515 computers on Wi-Fi. That report also lists a biogas plant, incinerators, a vermicompost plant and electronic waste recycling among the working services.

The site's own facilities index adds an indoor stadium, a language lab, rainwater harvesting, a solar power project, a students service centre and a research scholars lobby to that list.

The library is named for the missionary who bought the land. Rev. James Emlyn Memorial Library sits on the first floor of the Emlyn block and holds the following.

The general reading room seats nearly 100 readers at a time, the dailies come in Tamil, Malayalam and English, borrowing runs on a fifteen day loan renewable once, and the electronic subscriptions arrive through the INFLIBNET N-LIST programme. Opening hours are 9.15 am to 4.30 pm on working days, with Wednesdays kept open through the summer vacation.

On the sports side the department runs a multi sports complex with a wooden-floor badminton court, a physical fitness centre, indoor table tennis and a gymnastics floor, and an outdoor stadium built around a 200 metre track with a football field inside it.

Hostel

Residential provision here is for women only. The Women's Hostel has run on campus since the academic year 2009-2010, partly sponsored by the University Grants Commission, and any female student enrolled in the college is eligible to become a resident; rooms are furnished and the mess operates on a dividing system, which means residents share the running cost rather than paying a fixed tariff, according to the college handbook. A separate retiring hall for girl students sits alongside it among the physical facilities the Self Study Report lists.

We could not find a published men's hostel, a room count or a hostel tariff for this college, so a male applicant from outside Kanyakumari district should ask the office about accommodation in Marthandam before accepting a seat.

Faculty

The staffing is heavily aided and almost entirely mid-grade. The Self Study Report records 51 associate professors and 129 assistant professors recruited against state government sanctioned posts, plus 23 assistant professors recruited by the management, and not a single professor-grade post sanctioned or filled on either side. Qualification is the stronger number in the same report: 152 permanent teachers hold a Ph.D., against 21 whose highest qualification is an M.Phil. and 6 a postgraduate degree.

The college handbook puts current teaching strength at 198 with 72 non-teaching staff and about 3159 students on the rolls, and it prints every teacher's name, degree and mobile number, as does the public faculty directory. An applicant can therefore find the mobile number of the head of the department they are applying to before they apply, which is unusual enough to be worth using.

Notable Alumni

The college publishes a Distinguished Alumni page but has left it empty, so the only named alumni on its own site sit under the NCC unit. The NCC prominent alumni list names Maj Gen V. David Iver Devavaram, from the first cohort the college taught; Major Sabari PM, a battery commander who was NCC Senior Under Officer while reading B.Sc. Physics; and Major Vivek Vijay, a training company commander who read B.A. History.

Current achievement is better documented than past achievement. The university ranks page lists first-rank holders in the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University examinations for 2025-2026 in B.A. History (English), B.A. Economics, B.Sc. Physical Education, M.A. English, M.A. History and M.Sc. Physics. We name only people the college itself documents, and stop there.
