Queen Marys College

Chennai, Tamil Nadu Est. 1914 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#62

A first-year B.A. seat at Queen Mary's College is priced at Rs 1,547 for the 2026-2027 intake, and the figure is not a deposit or a first instalment. It is the entire college fee sheet for the year, itemised down to a Rs 11 line for the campus stores, with the semester examination fees the college notifies separately sitting outside it. This is a Tamil Nadu government college that admits only women, sits on Kamarajar Salai facing the Marina in Chennai, and was placed 62nd among Indian colleges in NIRF 2025. There is no entrance exam. The undergraduate application is filed once with the state, through Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Colleges Admissions, whose district-wise list puts the college's sanctioned undergraduate strength at 2,038, and the seat is then decided on a Plus Two mark inside the candidate's reservation category.

Overview

The college opened in 1914 as Madras College for Women, started by the British government with an intake of 33 students. Its own timeline dates the name change to 1917, undergraduate teaching to 1916, postgraduate teaching to 1958, Tamil-medium undergraduate courses to 1969 and autonomous status to the 1987 academic year. The green campus of 17 acres on Kamarajar Salai overlooks the Marina.

Autonomy here has been a working instrument rather than a line on the letterhead. Under it the college claims the first Knowledge and Skill mapped syllabi at any government college, from 2018-19 at postgraduate level and 2019-20 at undergraduate level, and it sets its own examinations and syllabi while the degree still comes from the University of Madras.

The charter and the balance sheet point the same way. The mission the college publishes is to function exclusively for the uplift of women in the state and nation, and its return to the education ministry puts 4,413 women in undergraduate classes and 608 in postgraduate ones, and enters all of them in a single column: fees met from state and central government funds. The institutional and private columns beside it are blank, and so is the column for students paying their own way.

Courses & Fees

The 2026-2027 fee sheet prices a degree by subject and prints no separate line for the afternoon shift. Every undergraduate course fits on one page.

Undergraduate programmeFirst-year total, Tamil Nadu HSC
B.A. History, Economics, Sociology, Tamil, English, Telugu, SanskritRs 1,547
B.Com. General and B.Com. Corporate SecretaryshipRs 1,547
B.A. Indian MusicRs 1,567
B.Sc. Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geography, Nutrition and Dietetics, Biochemistry, Physical EducationRs 1,567
B.Sc. Computer Science and B.C.A. Computer ApplicationRs 1,667
B.Sc. Clinical Nutrition and TTMRs 2,067

The heads behind those totals explain where the differences come from. Admission is Rs 5 and medical inspection Rs 5, verification of each Plus Two certificate is Rs 50, the parent-teacher association takes Rs 500 from everyone and the campus stores Rs 11. The Rs 20 laboratory fee is charged on every science course and on B.A. Indian Music but on no other arts course, the two computer courses add Rs 100 of computer stationery, and Clinical Nutrition and TTM carry an extra Rs 500 under a column the sheet heads DJ OC.

Everything left is the sheet's two blocks of special fees, PD I and PD II, which it prints head by head on its second page without ever saying what PD stands for. PD I comes to Rs 265: Rs 100 games, Rs 50 semester stationery, Rs 20 union, Rs 20 magazine, Rs 15 college day and Rs 10 each for the library, audio visual education, the calendar, fine arts, sports tea and the Social Service League. PD II comes to Rs 711: Rs 200 admission, Rs 100 recognition, Rs 80 general registration, Rs 60 each for sports and library, Rs 41 insurance, Rs 30 each for matriculation, development and infrastructural facilities and the cultural and youth festival, Rs 25 convocation, Rs 20 alumni, Rs 20 red cross, Rs 10 NSS and Rs 5 flag day. Only the recognition line moves with the board you came from, and it is the one number a non-state candidate has to add: a CBSE or ISC candidate pays Rs 200 there instead of Rs 100, lifting PD II to Rs 811 and every total in the table above by Rs 100.

Postgraduate pricing follows the same logic with one exception that is worth reading before you apply.

Postgraduate programmeFirst-year total
M.A. Tamil, English, History, Economics, Sociology and M.Com.Rs 1,577
M.A. Indian Music and the M.Sc. sciencesRs 1,607
M.Sc. Computer ScienceRs 1,807
M.C.A. Computer Applications, SC and ST candidatesRs 1,807
M.C.A. Computer Applications, other than SC and STRs 2,807

The M.C.A. is the only programme on the sheet carrying a tuition fee, Rs 1,000, and the only one where the amount turns on the candidate's community. Every other master's degree in the table has a tuition line of zero.

Doctoral study is priced by faculty rather than by subject: the sheet totals Rs 1,335 for an arts research scholar and Rs 1,935 for a science one in the first year, on a tuition line of Rs 300 or Rs 500 charged three times, with a Rs 3,000 parent-teacher association line printed separately below.

Admissions

Undergraduate entry runs in two stages, and the first one does not happen at Kamarajar Salai. Queen Mary's is one of the government arts and science colleges on the TNGASA district-wise list for 2026 undergraduate admissions, so the application is filed with the state rather than with the college. The state's procedure note names www.tngasa.in as the only official website, routes help through an Admission Facilitation Centre at a government arts college in each district, and puts no limit on how many colleges or courses a candidate lists, at an application and registration fee of Rs 50, or Rs 2 for an SC, SCA or ST candidate.

The mark that decides the seat is not one mark for everybody. The state note sets out three rank lists: a Tamil list on the Tamil mark out of 100, used for B.A. Tamil Literature and B.Lit.; an English list on the English mark out of 100, used for B.A. English Literature; and a general list on the remaining four subjects out of 400, used for every other B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.B.A., B.C.A. and B.S.W. seat. Each college then publishes its own rank lists and its own tentative allotment, and the candidate reports to the college named in the allotment letter. Queen Mary's own admission page states only the general rule, that rank lists are prepared on the Part-III total out of 400 secured in the HSC examination and posted on the college website, so a Tamil or English literature applicant should read the state note beside it.

Only women candidates are eligible, and the applicant must have appeared for the Tamil Nadu HSC or an equivalent and passed in all subjects; a postgraduate applicant needs a bachelor's degree from the University of Madras or an equivalent university. On age the two documents disagree, and the state's is the one governing this cycle: TNGASA sets an upper limit of 40 as on 01/07/2026, with relaxation of 5 years for a differently abled candidate and 3 years for SC, SCA, ST, BC, BCM, MBC and DNC candidates and for women, while the college's own page still prints an age ceiling of 24 years as on July 1st, relaxed by 2 years for physically challenged candidates.

Government reservation norms govern the allotment, and they are not a footnote here. The seat matrix splits every section into OC, BC, BCM, MBC and DNC, SC, SCA and ST lines before anyone applies, leaving 399 of the 1,306 morning academic seats to open competition, so a candidate is ranked inside her own community rather than against the whole field. Separate quotas run for physically challenged candidates, sports candidates with priority for national and state level, Tamil candidates from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and ex-servicemen; the state application form adds NCC 'A' certificate holders and the children and widows of eligible security-forces personnel.

The last stage is compressed enough to catch applicants out. Shift I and Shift II admissions are conducted on the same day, so a candidate cannot hold a morning offer while waiting on an afternoon one, and if selected during counselling, the student pays her fees the same day, which is why the fee sheet above is worth reading before the counselling date rather than after it. Certificates have to be carried in original on the day: mark sheets, transfer certificate, a current community certificate with the Gopuram seal, conduct certificate, medical certificate, photographs and attested copies of everything. Hostel applications are made afterwards, through the Deputy Warden, once general admission is complete.

The college is listed under the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Collegiate Education, which sanctions its course-wise strength, and that listing is the state's own record of what the college is approved to teach.

Cutoff

The college advertises no cutoff mark. What it publishes instead is a provisional rank list for each admission cycle, and the closing figure for a subject is whatever the last admitted candidate in that category scored once counselling for that day is finished.

Open that list before you convert anything. It is not one ranking but a stack of them, broken out by department, by shift and by medium, with several departments splitting again into candidates who took that subject at Plus Two and candidates who did not, and the academic and vocational sections ranked apart. The department lists do not all print on the same scale either, because the Tamil and English departments rank on a single language mark while the rest rank on a four-subject total, so a mark carried across from one of them means nothing in another.

Dates from the 2026-2027 intake show the shape of it. Counselling for the special quota was held on 5 June 2026 and the sports quota on 6 June, the general rounds were scheduled department by department across 8, 9 and 10 June and again across 15, 16 and 17 June, and a third round for arts courses took place on 22 June 2026 and for science courses on 23 June. A third round exists because seats remain after the first two, so a candidate whose total falls short of the opening list is not automatically out. Watch the notifications page rather than a third-party cutoff table.

Placements

Queen Mary's files outcome data with NIRF every year, and that return is the only placement record the college publishes with numbers attached. Read it as three cohorts rather than one headline.

Undergraduate cohort2022-232023-242024-25
Graduated in minimum stipulated time1,1591,1611,194
Placed536824818
Median salary of those placedRs 1,92,000Rs 2,52,000Rs 2,76,000
Selected for higher studies475270297

The median has climbed in each of the three years while the placed count roughly held after a jump. Read the higher-studies row against the placed row and the two routes out of this college have been pulling apart: 475 against 536 in 2022-23, the closest they have come, then 297 against 818 by 2024-25.

Postgraduate outcomes move differently.

Postgraduate cohort2022-232023-242024-25
Graduated in minimum stipulated time261266285
Placed83158107
Median salary of those placedRs 2,64,000Rs 3,12,000Rs 3,12,000
Selected for higher studies726932

A master's here has paid a higher median than the bachelor's in each of the three years, but the share of a cohort placed has swung hard, from just under a third to nearly three in five and back to a little over a third. The Placement and Training Cell, established in 2007, runs the interface with employers alongside free coaching in office and accounting software, and the college names WIPRO, Southerland, Tally and HCL among the firms its students have gone to, with Home Science graduates placed at MV Diabetes Care Centre and Chemistry graduates at a firm it names only as Domes-e-data.

One company-level document sits behind those names, and it does not match them. A self-reported employer sheet for 2020-21 records 17 students who entered their own offer details, at an average of Rs 11,426 a month, with B.Sc. Mathematics contributing 5 of them, Biochemistry 4 and B.Com. Corporate Secretaryship 3. The employers on it are Accenture, AGS Health, Hinduja Global Solutions, NTT Data Services, VFS Global, Omega Healthcare, Annexmed, Finwizz, Nexus, IQ Back Office and Yalamanchili Software Exports, and medical coding and process-associate roles dominate. Each row is a student's own entry on a form that asks her to upload an appointment letter, ID card or salary slip, so read it as a sample of who hires here and at what monthly rate, not as a placement report.

Seat Matrix

Seats are sanctioned section by section and split by reservation category before a single application is filed, which is why the college publishes a grid rather than a total.

Sanctioned seats, 2025-26AcademicVocational
Undergraduate, Shift I1,30660
Undergraduate, Shift II61656
Postgraduate, Shift I3400

Those four undergraduate figures add to 2,038, which is exactly the sanctioned strength the state's own college list prints against Queen Mary's, so the college grid and the TNGASA list are describing the same seats.

Within the 1,306 morning undergraduate seats the split is 399 OC, 349 BC, 42 BCM, 263 MBC and DNC, 198 SC, 34 SCA and 21 ST. The largest single section is B.Com. General in the afternoon shift at 96 academic seats plus 24 vocational; the smallest undergraduate one is B.A. Sanskrit at 12, and three master's sections run smaller still at 10. Tamil-medium sections exist in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, History, Maths, Physics, Tamil and Zoology, which matters because that choice follows a student into a separate stipend scheme described further down.

Rankings

NIRF placed the college 62nd in the College category in 2025 on an overall score of 57.68, and the five parameters behind that total are unusually far apart.

NIRF 2025, College categoryScore
Overall score57.68
Teaching, Learning and Resources65.49
Research and Professional Practice34.24
Graduation Outcomes74.13
Outreach and Inclusivity58.25
Perception19.87

That shape says something concrete to an applicant: students who enrol here finish on time and move on, while the college's name carries little weight with the employers, academics and public that NIRF surveys for its perception score. Research and professional practice at 34.24 is the second-weakest of the five, which is the figure to weigh if a Ph.D. is the reason you are applying.

The rank itself has been anything but steady. The college's own NIRF page records 77th in 2018, 40th in 2019, 41st in 2020, 55th in 2021, 47th in 2022 and 60th in 2023. It lists a submission for 2024 without a rank against it, so the published trajectory has no 2024 point. Against that record, 62 in 2025 is the lowest placing since 2018 rather than a stable position, and a single year's number should be read inside that swing.

Departments

The college runs 24 departments, and seven of them teach a language.

LanguagesTamil, English, Telugu, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, French
Humanities and social sciencesHistorical Studies, Sociology, Economics, Music
Basic sciencesPhysics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Geography
Applied and professionalBiochemistry, Home Science, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Commerce, Corporate Secretaryship, and Physical Education, Health Education and Sports

Above the undergraduate layer the college counts 23 undergraduate programmes, 18 postgraduate programmes, 13 M.Phil. programmes and 13 departments carrying research to a Ph.D. The newest degree on that list is the M.C.A., started in 2023 with AICTE approval, and six new courses opened in the afternoon shift in 2025. Sanctioned undergraduate intake has moved the other way in the college's own NIRF filing, from 1,568 in 2022-23 to 1,476 and then 1,369.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The Resource Centre for students with visual impairments opened in 2007 and now serves about 75 students across the Tamil, English, History, Sociology, Economics and Music departments. It runs a dedicated laboratory with JAWS and NVDA screen readers installed on 14 machines, a Braille printer and Braille stationery, tactile devices, talking clocks and a Braille chess board, and the college arranges readers and scribes, weekly classes and sports coaching through it. The digital library has a ramp.

A second facility is rarer still: a primary school inside the campus gates. The Social Service League School was started in 1946 by the then principal, Miss K. Myers, as a free school for children of families below the poverty line from the settlements around the college, and gained permanent state recognition fourteen years later. It functions as a government school, the children get free lunch and every college department runs activity sessions with them. For a student reading sociology, that is a field site inside the same gates.

The everyday runs on smaller arrangements. A staff and students' co-operative store makes every student a member for a token Rs 11 at admission and supplies prescribed textbooks at subsidised rates, which is the same Rs 11 that appears as the stores line on the fee sheet. The digital library opened in a new building in 2011 and the Kalaignar Maligai block in 2010. Wheelchairs, and a means of moving a student from one block to another, are recorded too, and on both lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets the college ticks the highest option its disclosure offers, more than 80% of buildings.

Hostel

Residential capacity changed materially in 2025. A seven-storeyed women's hostel built at a cost of Rs 42 crore was inaugurated on 21st May 2025 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, in fulfilment of an assurance given at the 104th convocation in 2022, and it accommodates 455 students. The college describes triple-sharing rooms with individual cots and study desks, 24x7 CCTV, a lift, a medical room and water dispensers on every floor. Foundation was laid at the same event for a Rs 5 crore auditorium funded under the MPLADS scheme by the Rajya Sabha member P. Wilson.

The college does not publish a room rent, a mess charge or an allotment rule for the hostel. What it does publish is the route: apply through the Deputy Warden after general admission is complete, not as part of the admission itself, and the hostel office answers on 044-28441729.

Faculty

The faculty list filed with NIRF runs to 232 entries, and exactly one of them is a man. Whatever a student reads here, she will be taught it almost entirely by women, from the principal down.

Qualifications sit high on the same list: 168 of the 232 entries carry a Ph.D. and 59 an M.Phil., and the designations run 105 associate professors against 64 assistant professors. Not all of it is the regular cadre, and the return says so: 62 of the 232 are entered with a designation of Other and an association type of Other rather than Regular, which is just over a quarter of the names on the page.

Length of service is the other pattern in it. A block of 27 entries share a joining date of 26 December 2007, another 18 joined across July 2010, and 4 run back into the 1990s. Against that tenured core, 10 of the listed faculty had left by the middle of 2025, 6 of them on 30-05-2025 alone, and 4 fresh regular appointments were made in November and December 2024.

Notable Alumni

The college's alumni record leads with the freedom movement rather than with corporate titles. Capt. Lakshmi Sehgal of the Indian National Army studied here, and the college states that its alumnae contributed to the Quit India Movement, with many unnamed women from the college involved in the nationalist movement. Among its academic alumnae the college names Dr. Rajammal Devadass, a nutrition scientist who became Vice Chancellor of Avinashilingam Deemed University.

One entry in that record is a piece of social history rather than a name people know. The first three child-widow graduates from South India came from this college: Ammukutty, Parvathy and Lakshmi, residents of the Icehouse widows' home, who joined in 1917, after which Ammukutty taught in Coimbatore and Lakshmi taught at the college itself. Read against a 1914 founding intake of 33, that is the arc the institution was built for.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

The college holds an A+ grade from NAAC, and says it was the first government college to go in for NAAC accreditation, earning a 4 star status in 1999 and being reaccredited in 2025. Its own milestone timeline dates that first star rating to 1998 instead, and records an A grade in 2015. Autonomy was granted in the 1987 academic year and extended to all M.Phil. programmes in 2007.

Programme-level approval matters for one course only. The M.C.A. started in 2023 with AICTE approval, and it is the single programme here that sits under a national technical regulator; the rest of the teaching runs under the University of Madras affiliation and the college's own autonomy. The college publishes its AICTE letter of approval and its mandatory disclosure alongside its NAAC certificates.

Aid

Scholarships

Financial aid at Queen Mary's is not a college scholarship fund. It is the state and central schemes, applied through the college, and they are the machinery behind the reimbursement column in the NIRF return.

SchemeStudents who received it
BC, MBC and BCM scholarship2,375
SC and ST scholarship1,594
Adi Dravidar Welfare prize money for SC, ST and SC convert students68
Central Sector Scheme for College and University Students17
Post Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities3
Post Matric Scholarship for Minorities2

The parental income ceiling is Rs 2.50 lakhs for the community, minority and disability schemes and Rs 8 lakhs for the Central Sector one. The Adi Dravidar prize money publishes no income line at all, and goes instead to students who secured 60% and above marks in first attempt.

One scheme is specific to this college's Tamil-medium sections. An undergraduate who studies through Tamil medium and writes her examinations in Tamil receives Rs 900 a year under a stipend initiated in 1971-1972, and the beneficiary count was 290 in the first year, 288 in the second and 262 in the third. Doctoral scholarships require 60% marks in postgraduate degree. The college does not publish a merit scholarship of its own, so a high rank-list mark buys the seat rather than a discount.
