Dr.n.g.p. Arts And Science College
Dr. N.G.P. Arts and Science College admission runs through no counselling portal and no entrance test. You apply on the college's own system and your Class 12 marks are read there. The same marks then decide what you pay, because the college converts a Tamil Nadu higher secondary total of 570 and above into a full waiver of the education fee. Its return to the Ministry of Education carries the figures no brochure prints: seats sanctioned against students actually admitted, and the median salary of the graduates it placed.
Overview
This is an arts and science college owned by a hospital trust, and the subject list gives that away. Medical Physics, Clinical Laboratory Technology and Hospital Administration are taught here alongside the commerce and computing degrees that fill most of the seats. The college was established in the academic year 1997-98 under Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami as chairman and Mrs. Mathura V. Palaniswami as secretary, and began with four undergraduate programmes, seven years after the same founder's Kovai Medical Center and Hospital started functioning on 24 June 1990. The trust has since renamed itself, and the college's administrative mail still routes through the hospital group's domain.
Two pieces of status matter to an applicant. The college was conferred autonomous status in the academic year 2015-16 by the University Grants Commission and is recognised under sections 2(f) and 12(B), so it writes its own syllabus and runs its own examinations while Bharathiar University awards the degree. Its accreditation now stands at an A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.64 in the third NAAC cycle, and the college's older letterheads still carry the second-cycle A grade it held before that.
Courses & Fees
The teaching list is broad rather than deep, and it leans towards degrees with a job title attached. The college offers 30 undergraduate, 17 postgraduate, 12 research and 11 diploma programmes, spread across six faculties.
| Faculty | Undergraduate degrees | Postgraduate degrees | Doctoral subjects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic and Applied Sciences | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Catering Science and Hotel Management, Costume Design and Fashion | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medical Physics | Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |

No tuition amount appears on the college's website, in its 2025-26 handbook or in the fee documents it links. The online payment page prints the payment gateway's transaction charges and nothing else, from nil on UPI and RuPay debit to a flat charge on net banking and a percentage plus GST on a credit card; the fee heads themselves open only to a student who logs in with a roll number and date of birth. Until you hold that roll number, the amount is whatever the admission counter quotes you.
What the college does publish to the rupee is the discount, and it is priced off your board marks. The scholarship table is a fee schedule read backwards.
| Qualifying result | What the college waives |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu state board, 570 marks and above | 100% scholarship for education |
| Tamil Nadu state board, 550 to 569 marks | 75% of tuition fees |
| Tamil Nadu state board, 525 to 549 marks | 40% of tuition fees |
| Tamil Nadu state board, 500 to 524 marks | 25% of tuition fees |
| CBSE, 450 to 499 marks | 50% of tuition fees |
| CBSE, 425 to 449 marks | 25% of tuition fees |
| School national-level sports participant or medallist | 100% on education and hostel |
| School state-level sports participant or medallist | 50% on education and hostel |
| Ward of a college employee | 25% of tuition fees each semester |
| Sibling of a current student | 25% of tuition fees each semester |
Smaller concessions are stated as flat sums rather than percentages, which is unusual enough to be worth reading before you apply: Rs 10,000 a semester for a top-three departmental rank holder who stays on for a postgraduate degree, Rs 5,000 a semester for any other alumnus who does, Rs 5,000 to a student who refers a new admission and Rs 3,000 off the first semester for the candidate referred.
The spend behind those slabs is published batch by batch, which is rare and lets you check the ladder against reality rather than take it on trust.
| Batch | Students on merit concession | Students on sports concession | Total concession (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-2022 | 123 | 31 | 33,80,700 |
| 2022-2023 | 360 | 20 | 33,87,080 |
| 2023-2024 | 351 | 39 | 67,10,550 |
| 2024-2025 | 301 | 32 | 66,65,450 |
| 2025-2026 | 317 | 41 | 88,83,150 |
| 2026-2027 | 186 | 22 | 44,42,000 |
Trust money reaches a much wider group than the merit ladder alone. In the ranking filing 2,956 undergraduates appear on a full tuition fee reimbursement from institution funds, against 219 on state and central government funds and 179 on private-body funds. The renewal condition tied to your semester average is what the college charges for that.
Admissions
Application is direct, and the whole of it belongs to the college. Registration opens on a separate admissions site where a candidate verifies a mobile number by OTP, sets a password, picks a programme level and course, and pays an application form fee the college states is non-refundable, and the admission page routes every applicant to that same online form and takes enquiries on 0422 236 9252. Neither page names an entrance examination, a counselling authority or a selection interview at any stage.
What the college weighs is the qualifying examination, read under two sets of external rules. Its own by-laws state that applications must come on the prescribed form and that all admissions are made as per the guidelines prescribed by the affiliating university and the Government of Tamil Nadu. Where an entry condition is printed, it is a plain mark bar rather than a test score: the postgraduate diploma in hospital health care management asks for any bachelor's degree with 50% marks, the diploma in clinical research and data management for a bio science bachelor's degree with the same 50%, and the six-month diplomas for an HSC pass.
Timing is the part most applicants get wrong, because the cycle closes earlier than a counselling calendar would. In the 2025-26 session the college's calendar opened classes for second and third year undergraduates and second year postgraduates on 11 June, staggered the first year undergraduate opening across 13, 16 and 17 June, and started first year postgraduates on 23 June. A student who applies in July is joining a class that has already been running for a month.
Cutoff
No admission cutoff exists to look up here, and the reason is worth spelling out, because the college does publish something called a rank list and it is a different document entirely. The two rank lists on its site cover the UG 2016-19, UG 2017-20, PG 2017-19 and PG 2018-20 batches, and the April 2020 list names the first, second and third rank holders in each department with the CGPA each finished on, issued under the Office of the Controller of Examinations. Those are graduation merit lists for students on their way out, not entry bars for students on their way in.
The nearest published signal of where an applicant stands is the mark ladder in the fee section, and its lowest rung is the useful one: 500 marks on the Tamil Nadu state board is the point at which the college begins paying part of your fee. Below that the college still admits, it simply charges in full.
Placements
The college files placement numbers to two different audiences, and the two counts answer different questions. The ranking return counts students; the placement record counts offers.
| Graduating batch | On-time graduates | Students placed | Median salary | Went to higher study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate 2021-22 | 1,862 | 582 | Rs 280,000 | 559 |
| Undergraduate 2022-23 | 1,933 | 970 | Rs 300,000 | 548 |
| Undergraduate 2023-24 | 1,562 | 1,030 | Rs 370,000 | 523 |
| Postgraduate 2021-22 | 373 | 135 | Rs 180,000 | 30 |
| Postgraduate 2022-23 | 409 | 336 | Rs 300,000 | 35 |
| Postgraduate 2023-24 | 481 | 445 | Rs 410,000 | 19 |
Two things in that table are worth a minute. The postgraduate median overtook the undergraduate one for the 2023-24 batch, at Rs 410,000 against Rs 370,000, which reverses the usual pattern in a college where the master's programmes are much the smaller side. And between a quarter and a third of each undergraduate cohort leaves for further study rather than a job, 523 of 1,562 on-time graduates in 2023-24, so the placement figure is struck over a batch that has already shrunk.
The company-wise sheet counts offers rather than students, and its totals run well above the ranking return for the same year.
| Recruitment year | Companies listed | Offers logged |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | 44 | 1,837 |
| 2024-25 | 50 | 2,355 |
| 2025-26 | 41 | 3,144 |
Read the two together for the same year and the gap is plain: 1,837 offers logged in 2023-24 against 1,030 undergraduates and 445 postgraduates recorded as placed, so the offer sheet cannot be read as a headcount. It is also top-heavy in a way the total hides. In 2025-26 the four largest entries alone, Sutherland at 575, Quess Corp at 414, V4U Solutions at 296 and Apollo Pharmacy at 277, account for more than half the year's offers, and the 2023-24 sheet is shaped the same way around Concentrix at 264 and Pronoia Insurance at 248. Volume comes from process, insurance and staffing employers; the named IT firms sit further down, with TCS at 245 in 2025-26. The placement cell's own summary for the latest year claims 3,100 offers and more than 60 drives, a highest package of 10 lakh and an average of 3.6 lakh. Plan against the medians in the first table, not the highest package in the last one.
Seat Matrix
The college's own filings show the undergraduate gate slackening rather than tightening.
| Level and year | Sanctioned first-year seats | First-year students admitted |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, 2019-20 | 2,220 | 2,090 |
| Undergraduate, 2020-21 | 2,514 | 1,986 |
| Undergraduate, 2021-22 | 2,574 | 1,680 |
| Postgraduate, 2020-21 | 656 | 449 |
| Postgraduate, 2021-22 | 690 | 425 |
| Postgraduate, 2022-23 | 656 | 506 |
The 2021-22 undergraduate round admitted 1,680 students against 2,574 sanctioned places, and the sanctioned intake has since been cut to 2,520 for 2022-23 and 2,340 for 2023-24. A college trimming its own approved intake two years running is not rationing places. No category-wise or department-wise split of those seats is published, so the working limit on any one degree is whatever that department can seat, settled inside the admission office.
Rankings
On the ranking table this is a long-standing entrant rather than a new arrival, and it is not climbing. The college reports NIRF placings of 66th, 75th, 88th, 59th, 85th, 67th, 91st and 44th for 2025, 2024, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017, which puts its best year nearly a decade back. Its current place is 66th on an overall score of 57.56, and the five parameters underneath that number split sharply.
| NIRF 2025 parameter | Score out of 100 |
|---|---|
| Teaching, learning and resources | 69.35 |
| Research and professional practice | 36.08 |
| Graduation outcomes | 69.90 |
| Outreach and inclusivity | 53.92 |
| Perception | 15.38 |
Top and bottom of that table give the honest summary of the place: sound on what it does with the students it enrols, barely known outside its own district. One label needs correcting, since the admissions portal presents that 66th place as a 2026 result; the Ministry has published no 2026 college table, and the rank comes from the 2025 edition.
Departments
Teaching is cut fine. The college runs 32 departments across the six faculties, so a single-specialisation degree such as commerce with banking and insurance or computer science with cognitive systems has a department of its own rather than sitting as an elective inside a larger one. Commerce alone accounts for ten of them and computer science for eight.
The bio science and physics side is where the hospital connection shows most clearly, in departments of Medical Physics and Clinical Laboratory Technology that few arts and science colleges carry. Research is narrower than teaching, at 12 doctoral subjects against 30 undergraduate degrees, and it has institutional backing: seven science departments are recognised under the DBT Star College Scheme. Set against that undergraduate spread, the research and professional practice score of 36.08 is the ranking's verdict on the same imbalance, so anyone treating an M.Sc. here as a step towards a doctorate should ask the department how many scholars it is supervising right now.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The computing provision is sized for the number of computing degrees on offer. The college reports 19 computer laboratories with licensed software, a 1 Gbps fibre-optic backbone reaching every block and the hostel buildings, and 100 Mbps internet available 24x7 over leased lines from multiple providers, with CCTV in all of those laboratories.
The central library is a working collection rather than a showpiece, and its subscriptions say more than its shelf count does. It holds 52,000 books, 6,500 bound volumes of journals, 260 journals and magazines and 4,050 project reports, with more than 1,95,809 electronic books and journal access through EBSCO, N-LIST, ScienceDirect and the National Digital Library. Two of those subscriptions are the giveaway for a commerce-heavy college with a research ambition: the CMIE ProwessIQ financial database and Turnitin with remote access for plagiarism and AI-writing detection. Circulation runs 8.00 am to 8.00 pm on working days and 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturdays.
Getting there is a solved problem for a Coimbatore day scholar, since the college runs a total of 30 buses to all parts of Coimbatore and the surrounding areas. Sport is indoors and compact rather than sprawling: 6,000 square feet of indoor playing arena covering badminton, table tennis, chess and carrom, plus separate fitness centres of 1,500 square feet for boys and 750 for girls, open 6.00 am to 8.00 am and 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm.
One feature of this campus is regime rather than infrastructure, and it catches out applicants who did not read the rules. Cell phone use is prohibited across the campus and a seized handset is returned at the end of the course with the SIM card handed back immediately, and the dress code requires the prescribed uniform, tucked-in shirts with no exemption for functions or examinations, black formal shoes and a black belt for male students, with tight fits and leggings not permitted for female students. Better to know that before the application than after.
Hostel
Residence is arranged by the trust across its group campuses rather than inside the arts and science college itself, so the walk to class depends on which block you are given. Male arts and science students are housed at Neithel hostel, in the Dr. N.G.P. College of Education premises, which offers single, two-inmate and three-inmate rooms, all with attached rest rooms. Women share accommodation with the health sciences and engineering students at Thamarai and Malligai at Kovai Estate, on the KMCH College of Pharmacy premises, where Thamarai runs single, two-inmate and four-inmate rooms and Malligai offers single and three-inmate rooms in air conditioned and non air conditioned versions.
The rules are tighter than most college hostels and they are published in full. Inmates are allowed home on the first and third weekend only, keep a study hour from 08.45 P.M to 10.00 P.M and a silent hour from 10.00 P.M to 07.00 A.M, and may leave only with a parent or guardian for the first six months. Parental consent is automated rather than assumed: an approved leave request triggers an IVRS call to the parent from 7598902303, and the leave is granted only if they press 1. Meals run to a fixed clock, breakfast 07.00 to 08.45 A.M, lunch 12.00 noon to 01.45 P.M, tea and snacks 04.30 to 05.30 P.M and supper 07.00 to 08.45 P.M. Room rent and establishment charges are collected a year in advance with a month of mess charges as a refundable advance, but no rent amount and no bed count for any block is published, so both have to come from the hostel office.
Faculty
The teaching strength here is filed twice over, and the two filings do not agree. The ranking return entered 456 faculty members for the 2025 cycle, while the college's own profile claims more than 360 teaching staff of whom over 200 are doctorates, serving 7500 students on roll. The narrower claim is the more useful one, because it is the doctorate share that decides who can supervise research, and better than half the teaching staff clearing that bar is a strong figure for a self-financing college.
The principal is Dr. S. Saravanan, whose listed qualifications are M.Com., M.Phil., two M.B.A.s and a Ph.D. The layer below him is not organised one dean per faculty. The college names a Dean of Research and Development, a Dean of Computer Science, a Dean of Commerce, a Dean of Basic and Applied Science and Bioscience, and an Associate Dean for Student Affairs who also heads Management, so the two biggest teaching blocks get a dean of their own while research and student welfare get one each, and four of those five posts are held by women. A humanities applicant should expect to deal with a head of department rather than a dean.
Notable Alumni
The college publishes no list of distinguished alumni with names, batches and current roles, and nothing here should be invented to fill that gap. What it does publish is the machinery, and the machinery is unusually well developed. The alumni association is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975, with life membership at Rs 100 as a one-time payment, and its chapters carry their own names: NGP Islanders in Colombo and NGP Desert Hunters in Karama, Dubai, alongside national and local chapters in Bangalore and Tirupur. Where the association has left a permanent mark is in the departments: twenty six endowment funds of Rs 1 lakh each, instituted by named graduating batches, sit with the departments they came from, and the batches chose the names, so Medical Physics carries a Homi J. Bhabha endowment, Microbiology a Louis Pasteur endowment and Catering Science an Auguste Escoffier endowment. Named achievements in a particular subject have to be asked of that department.
