NIRF Pharmacy
#97

JIS University Kolkata is a private university on Nilgunj Road in Agarpara, and its NIRF rank is a pharmacy rank: 97th in India Rankings 2025, after two years in the unnumbered band below the top hundred. Its Department of Pharmaceutical Technology teaches every pharmacy level from a two year diploma to a doctorate, and the diploma, degree and master's seats all sit under one Pharmacy Council of India file.

The JIS Group runs several other pharmacy institutions under the same banner. The seats, fees, cutoffs and salaries below belong to JIS University itself and to no other JIS campus.

Overview

JIS University exists because of a state law. The Kolkata Gazette published the JIS University Act, 2014, West Bengal Act XXII of 2014 on 21st January, 2015, establishing the university at Agarpara in the district of North 24-Parganas as a private university promoted by the Narula Educational Trust. The university's about page says it came into existence in February 2015, and its self-disclosure to a UGC expert committee gives the exact date of establishment as 3rd February 2015.

The trust named in the Act still runs it. The university's mandatory disclosure lists the Narula Educational Trust at the same 81, Nilgunj Road address and names Prof. (Dr.) Partha Sarkar as vice chancellor.

Pharmacy is one faculty among several here, alongside engineering, management, law, education, hospitality and agriculture, but it is the one NIRF ranked in 2025. The Pharmacy Council of India's letter for the current session addresses the programmes to JIS UNIVERSITY under the council's file PCI-502, and the council's letter for the 2024-2025 session spells the unit out as the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, JIS University, 81 Nilgunj Road, Agarpara, pin code 700109.

That department is older than its NIRF record and younger than the university. The council's executive committee, meeting on 1st and 2nd February 2017, approved 60 degree admissions for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 after a first inspection in November 2016. The department's 2025 brochure dates its first B.Pharm batch to 2016-2020, its first D.Pharm batch to 2018-2020 and its first M.Pharm batch to 2020-2022.

Which JIS Institution Is This?

Six separate campuses appear when the JIS Group lists where its D.Pharm course is available: Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, JIS University, JIS Institute of Pharmacy at Bhutta in Ludhiana, JIS Institute of Pharmacy at Kalyani, Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, and Lord Buddha Koshal Medical College and Hospital. JIS College of Engineering is a different institution again, an autonomous engineering college in Kalyani, Nadia, that describes itself as affiliated under MAKAUT.

JIS University is the only university in that list. Its fee schedule, admission routes and NIRF filing are its own, and none of them describes the colleges listed beside it.

The department's pharmacy programmes run from D.Pharm through B.Pharm, lateral entry B.Pharm and M.Pharm to a Ph.D. At Agarpara the master's degree splits four ways on the Faculty of Pharmacy page, where a Quality Assurance branch sits beside Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and the department brochure also lists a B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology.

The B.Pharm Fee, Semester by Semester

The only pharmacy fee schedule on an official record for this university is the one it filed with the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board. Its institute profile on the board's site carries the board's note that the information is as provided by the institute and not verified, and it lists B.Pharm instalments for each of eight semesters including tuition.

B.Pharm semesterAmount
1stRs 1,06,850
2nd to 6th, eachRs 80,150
7th and 8th, eachRs 80,650

Added up, the eight instalments match the full course figure of around Rs 6.69 lakh that the university's own blog on pharmacy costs gives for B.Pharm. The same profile prices lateral entry at Rs 1,05,244 for the first semester and between Rs 70,050 and Rs 72,050 for each later semester.

One detail in that filing is worth a question at the admission desk. The B.Pharm row is identical, instalment for instalment, to the B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering row printed above it on the same profile. The blog total backs the B.Pharm figures, while the university's AICTE mandatory disclosure prices B.Tech CSE at Rs 64,100 per semester.

D.Pharm, M.Pharm and Ph.D. Fees

No fee for the diploma, any M.Pharm branch or the doctorate appears on the university's programme pages, its 2026 prospectus, its mandatory disclosure or its board filing. The JET page sends applicants to the Admission Department for official payment account details, and that desk is the only published route to those fees.

Admissions

There are two doors into pharmacy at JIS University, and which one applies depends on the course. B.Pharm takes candidates through the state's WBJEE counselling or through the university's own JIS University Entrance Test, called JET. D.Pharm, lateral entry and M.Pharm go through JET.

JET, the University's Own Test

JET is an online multiple choice paper of 100 questions in 2 hours with no negative marking, and the JET 2026 page says no application fee is charged. Candidates book a time slot and sit it from home or a cybercafe, and in special cases at the Agarpara campus. Results are promised within 48 working hours, and the page asks candidates to complete admission within 7 days of the result.

The subject split is where pharmacy applicants get caught out.

Pharmacy courseJET sections and question count
D.PharmChemistry 35, Physics 35, English 30
B.PharmPhysics 25, Chemistry 25, Mathematics 25, English 25
M.PharmB.Pharm syllabus 70, English 30

The B.Pharm paper carries a Mathematics section and no Biology, even though the university accepts 10+2 students who took Biology instead of Mathematics. A PCB student applying through JET is sitting a quarter of the paper outside their board subjects, and revising higher secondary mathematics before booking a slot is the practical response. The JET page also says a candidate who fails the first attempt may be granted another at the management's discretion.

The WBJEE Route for B.Pharm

WBJEE seats are allotted by the board, not by the university. For 2026 the board's pharmacy counselling notification ran three rounds, charged a one time Rs 500 registration fee and ranked every pharmacy course except Jadavpur University's on the Pharmacy Merit Rank. The board's B.Pharm schedule opened registration on 07.08.2026 and published the third round result on 24.08.2026.

An allottee then reports to Agarpara with the WBJEE rank card, the board's allotment and admission letters, the seat acceptance fee receipt, a domicile certificate for West Bengal domiciled candidates and, for a tuition fee waiver seat, an income certificate, per the university's instructions to WBJEE allotted candidates.

M.Pharm Eligibility Depends on Which Page You Read

The university prints two different bars for the same four M.Pharm branches. Its eligibility criteria page and the Faculty of Pharmacy page ask for 70% in a B.Pharm from a PCI approved institute. The individual M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics page and the department brochure ask for 55%, with a 5% relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates, and prefer a valid GPAT score. A graduate between those two marks should get the applicable figure confirmed by the admission cell before relying on either page.

Cutoff

JIS University publishes no JET cutoff, qualifying mark or merit list for any pharmacy course. The WBJEE side is on record: the board's OR-CR report for WBJEE Pharmacy Counselling 2026 lists the opening and closing ranks at which JIS University, Agarpara filled its B.Pharm seats in each round, all on the All India CRL or Pharmacy Merit Rank.

RoundQuota and categoryOpening rankClosing rank

3All India, Open4,32950,312
3Home State, EWS58,88484,317
3Home State, Tuition Fee Waiver8,8098,809

The tuition fee waiver seat is the competitive one here. It closed at 11,338 in the first round and at 8,809 in the next two, while open all-India seats closed at 61,119 and then 50,312, per the same report. The report carries no SC, ST or OBC row for JIS University's B.Pharm.

The board also published how many B.Pharm seats were still empty after the centralised rounds. The vacant seat matrix for Phase 1, Round 1 of the 2026 decentralised counselling lists 27 vacant B.Pharm seats at JIS University, Agarpara, 17 of them in the open all-India column and 10 in the EWS column, out of 2,634 vacant pharmacy seats across the state. Tuition fee waiver seats are left out of that matrix.

Placements

The placement numbers that belong to pharmacy alone are the ones JIS University filed with the ranking framework. The NIRF 2025 data covers graduates to 2023-24, and the NIRF 2026 submission the university hosts adds 2024-25.

B.Pharm graduating yearGraduated on timePlacedMedian salaryHigher studies
2021-2211015Rs 1,60,00029
2022-2310834Rs 1,86,00033
2023-2410856Rs 2,10,00025
2024-2510863Rs 2,80,00029

Placement count and median both climb every year in that table. Between 2021-22 and 2024-25 placements went from 15 graduates to 63 and the median from Rs 1,60,000 to Rs 2,80,000, while the class size barely moved. Even in 2024-25, the 63 placed and 29 in further study do not account for all 108 graduates.

M.Pharm graduating yearGraduated on timePlacedMedian salaryHigher studies
2021-221414Rs 2,40,0000
2022-231815Rs 3,01,0003
2023-241919Rs 3,25,6000
2024-253835Rs 3,30,0003

The master's programme converts far better than the bachelor's. In 2024-25 the M.Pharm cohort doubled to 38, and 35 of them were placed at a median of Rs 3,30,000.

No D.Pharm row exists in either filing, because the framework asks only for four year and two year degree programmes. The department brochure prints a D.Pharm batch figure of 46 for 2023-2025 under a Placement Status heading, but its column is headed No of Students and never says whether it counts placed students or the batch. Its B.Pharm figure of 85 for 2021-2025 matches neither the 108 graduates nor the 63 placed that the NIRF 2026 submission reports for 2024-25, so treat the brochure list as unexplained rather than as a placement rate.

University-wide figures are easy to mistake for pharmacy ones. The placement page advertises a 4.5 LPA average package and 152+ recruiting companies across all courses, and the board profile reports 67% of students placed in 2024 with an average CTC of 4.2 LPA, also without separating pharmacy. The FAQ sets a minimum of 6 on a 10 point scale to sit campus recruitment.

Seat Matrix

The Pharmacy Council of India sanctions JIS University's pharmacy admissions on six separate lines in its decision letter, and the split is uneven between the M.Pharm branches.

Course, 2026-2027PCI approved intake
D.Pharm60
B.Pharm100
M.Pharm, Pharmaceutics15
M.Pharm, Pharmacology15
M.Pharm, Pharmaceutical Chemistry9
M.Pharm, Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance9

Those figures are unchanged from the council's 2024-2025 letter, issued after its EC 415 meeting on 13 Sep 2024 and granted subject to inspection throughout the year. The B.Pharm line has grown since the first approval allowed 60 admissions, and the department brochure adds 10 lateral entry seats into the second year of B.Pharm.

The NIRF returns show the four year degree filling. Every first year intake of 100 admitted 100 students from 2019-20 through 2021-22, per the NIRF 2026 submission, with 10 to 12 lateral entrants on top. M.Pharm filled less evenly: the 2021-22 intake of 36 admitted 19. The university publishes no category-wise break-up of its pharmacy seats, and the UGC proforma it filed before April 2021 states that it reserves no seat under a management quota.

Rankings

JIS University was ranked 97th in the NIRF 2025 Pharmacy category with a score of 41.67, its first numbered pharmacy rank. Before that it sat in the 101-125 rank band in both 2023 and 2024, which the framework lists alphabetically without a score.

NIRF 2025 Pharmacy parameterJIS University score
Teaching, Learning and Resources68.41
Research and Professional Practice12.88
Graduation Outcomes51.09
Outreach and Inclusivity56.93
Perception13.80

At Agarpara the 68.41 for teaching is doing the lifting, while a research mark in the low teens keeps the total near the bottom of the hundred. The same table puts Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, a JIS Group college, at 85 despite lower teaching and research scores of 67.65 and 8.73. That college pulls ahead on graduation outcomes, at 60.74, and on perception, at 19.29, which are the two parameters where JIS University has the most ground to make up. The research inputs are rising, though: sponsored research brought in Rs 62,44,226 from 12 projects in 2024-25 against Rs 45,43,713 from 8 in 2022-23, and 10 patents were granted in calendar 2024, per the NIRF 2026 submission.

The university's own NIRF page is not the place to read the 2025 filing. Its NIRF Pharmacy 2025 link opens the university's annual report and its NIRF Overall 2025 link opens a service rule book, so the framework's copy of the data is the reliable one. With no 2026 Pharmacy table yet on the framework's site, the 2025 ranking of 97 is the current one.

Departments

Facilities & Infrastructure

Pharmacy has its own library and its own instrument room inside the Agarpara campus. The library page lists a Department of Pharmaceutical Technology Library, open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, beside the central library. The department brochure names subject laboratories from pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacognosy to human anatomy and physiology and pharmacy practice, plus dedicated PG research laboratories, a herbal garden and a pharma museum of crude drug samples.

The instruments named by the Faculty of Pharmacy page include HPLC, FTIR, a UV-visible spectrophotometer, a lyophilizer, an ultracentrifuge, a microplate reader and a BSL-2 biosafety cabinet. The pharmacy department's yearly outlay on new lab equipment was Rs 12,65,142 in 2022-23 and Rs 22,92,510 by 2024-25, going by the NIRF 2026 submission.

The campus itself is compact. The university told the UGC it holds 5.28 acres with 21600 square metres of building, and its infrastructure page lists a 200 seat air-conditioned auditorium, a gym and indoor sports.

Hostel

Four hostels are listed on the hostel page, with room rent and mess charged at INR 36,000 per semester and a one time admission charge of INR 5,000.

HostelTotal seatsBoarders listed
Boys Hostel 13220
Boys Hostel 24025
Girls Hostel 1189
Girls Hostel 25530

Rooms are 2, 3 or 4 sharing, and students bring their own mattress, bedding and bucket. The page mentions both on-campus and off-campus living, and the board profile gives a different count of 75 boys' and 70 girls' seats, so ask which building a pharmacy fresher would be placed in.

Hostel

We could not find official hostel and accommodation details for Jis University. Check the official website for the current hostel facilities and fees.

Faculty

The department's headcount depends on which document is read. The NIRF 2026 submission lists 40 regular faculty members against the 41 entered in the NIRF 2025 data, the department brochure counts 31 faculty members with 23 PhDs, and the board profile reports 27 full time faculty for B.Pharm and its lateral entry. The NIRF list is the only one that names every teacher with a joining date.

Jadavpur University's pharmacy school runs through the department's senior ranks, both in the degrees its professors list in the brochure and on its academic board. The Board of Studies is chaired by the head of department, Prof. (Dr.) Pintu Kumar De, with Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Kumar Chatterjee as Dean of Pharmacy and Prof. (Dr.) Biswajit Mukherjee, former head of pharmaceutical technology at Jadavpur University, as an external academic expert. An industry seat on the board goes to a vice president of Chembiotek, and the board also names separate coordinators for D.Pharm, B.Pharm and the Ph.D.

The doctoral side has grown quickly. Full time Ph.D. scholars in pharmacy rose from 25 in the 2025 filing to 45 in the 2026 one, with 40 part time, but only 1 full time scholar graduated in 2024-25.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

The approval that governs every pharmacy seat here is the PCI's, and it is renewed session by session: the current letter runs to the 2026-2027 academic session. The university also lists on its approvals page UGC recognition, membership of the Association of Indian Universities, AICTE approval for engineering and management, NMC approval letters, BCI approval for law, NCTE approval for teacher education, and recognition as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation for 2025-2028.

JIS University publishes no NAAC grade. Its accreditation page carries a NAAC heading, but the declaration it links returns a missing page. The last word on the question in the university's own documents is the No it wrote against NAAC accreditation in the UGC proforma, where it said it was preparing its institutional information for quality assessment by 25.04.21.

The 2026 prospectus does print NAAC 'A+' and 'A' grade institutes among its reasons to grow with JIS, but that is a JIS Group line, not a grade awarded to the university. The accreditation page also lists NBA e-SAR entries for pharmacy and computer science whose links lead nowhere, and it names no NBA accredited programme.

Aid

Scholarships

The strongest financial signal for pharmacy students is in the ranking return, not in the scholarship list. JIS University told the framework that government money paid the whole tuition of 252 students on a four year pharmacy roll of 430, in its NIRF 2026 submission. On the M.Pharm roll of 84, 22 were reimbursed from government funds and 8 from the university's own.

The FAQ names the schemes the university supports: its own Sardar Jodh Singh Merit Scholarship, the AICTE Pragati and Saksham scholarships, the National Scholarship Portal, the Swami Vivekananda Scholarship, Kanyashree Prakalpa, the OASIS portal and the Merit cum Means Scholarship. The FAQ gives no value, eligibility rule or number of awards for the Sardar Jodh Singh scholarship, and nothing on the pharmacy pages says which of these schemes a D.Pharm student can claim. The proforma submitted to the UGC describes fee concessions only as financial assistance to deserving students as decided by the Finance Committee.

Student Reviews

No verified student rating for JIS University's pharmacy programmes is held by Expertie, and nothing on the university's own site is independent of it. The one outside signal is the NIRF perception score of 13.80, a survey of academic peers and employers, which sits well below the university's teaching and outreach marks.
