Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University Of Technology, West Bengal
Two very different things carry this university's name. One is a 40-acre campus at Haringhata in Nadia district that teaches its own students. The other is a network of colleges across West Bengal whose degrees, syllabi and semester results all pass through that campus without their students ever studying on it. Its accreditation report sizes the second one without flinching: the university provides affiliation to more than two hundred (200) Colleges / Institutes, about 150,000 students sit its examinations every semester, and it produces more than 40,000 graduating students a year. Almost none of them live at Haringhata. Knowing which side of that line your admission letter sits on changes the fees you pay, the entrance test you sit and the placement cell that will or will not call you.
Overview
MAKAUT is a state technological university built to affiliate rather than to be one campus. It was created by West Bengal Act XV of 2000, the West Bengal University of Technology Act, 2000, published in the Calcutta Gazette Extraordinary of 20 July 2000, and one of that Act's recitals is the need to improve the education being imparted by engineering and technological colleges already affiliated elsewhere. The intent is stated more directly by the expert committee that recommended the university, appointed on December 31, 1998 under the chairmanship of Dr. Ashesh Prasad Mitra: it set two objectives, and the second was to provide affiliation to engineering, technological and management institutes.
The name changed later. The university records that West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) was renamed as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal (MAKAUT, WB) as per the Govt. of West Bengal Act, 2015, and its masthead still carries the old name in brackets. So does a good deal of its paperwork, which matters when you are checking whether an older degree certificate and a newer transcript belong to the same institution. They do.
The address history matters too, because the campus is recent. The university began operating from the West Bengal State Archives Building located at 43 Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata 700017 and only later moved out: all academic and administrative departments commenced functioning from its new 40-acre campus in Haringhata, Nadia, NH 12 (old NH 34) from 2018. A city campus at BF-142, Sector I, Salt Lake, Kolkata 700064 is still in use. If you are weighing a commute, Haringhata is the answer for in-house teaching, not Salt Lake.

Courses & Fees
The programme list splits in two on the university's own page, and reading the wrong half is the most common mistake applicants make here. Under the heading INHOUSE sit the degrees taught at Haringhata: BTech in COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING with 60 seats, BTech in INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY with 60, a long row of four-year B.Sc. programmes at 30 seats each, BBA variants at 30 and BCA at 240. Under the heading Affiliated Colleges sits a far longer list of BBA, B.Sc. and B.Optom titles that MAKAUT approves but does not teach. A B.Sc. in Culinary Science or Nautical Science on that list is offered by a college, with that college's fee.
In-house fees are published as a single course total rather than a per-year figure, which makes them unusually easy to compare. From the 2026 admission batch, a BTech CSE costs Rs 232300 in total, of which Rs 42600 falls due at the time of admission, and the same total applies to BTech IT, BTech Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology) and BTech Industrial Engineering. BCA and BBA both come to Rs 176300 across eight semesters, the in-house B.Sc. programmes in Biotechnology and Forensic Science to Rs 180300, and BBA LLB(H) to Rs 197250 across ten semesters. At postgraduate level an M.Tech totals Rs 86800 and most M.Sc. programmes Rs 94800.
One line on that fee sheet deserves separate attention. A tuition fee waiver seat in any of the four in-house B.Tech branches carries a total course fee of Rs 12300, because tuition, admission and library charges all drop to zero and only the development, registration and examination heads survive. Read the small print on both totals: the refundable caution money of Rs 8000 sits outside the published course fee and still falls due on day one, which is why the fee waiver student's payment at admission is Rs 10200. That is the cheapest engineering degree the university sells, and it is allotted through the same counselling as the paid seats.
Admissions
There is no single MAKAUT entrance test. Nine separate routes are listed, some run by the university and some by the state board, and the degree you want decides which paper you sit for.
| Route | Conducted by | Leads to |
|---|---|---|
| WBJEE | West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board | B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Pharm |
| CET | MAKAUT itself | Non-AICTE professional programmes, BBA, BCA |
| JEMAT | MAKAUT itself | MBA |
| JELET | WBJEE Board | Lateral entry to engineering, technology and pharmacy |
| JECA | WBJEE Board | MCA |
| JEHOM | WBJEE Board | Hotel management |
| PGET | MAKAUT itself | M.Tech and M.Pharm |
| GAT-B | Regional Centre for Biotechnology | M.Tech Biotechnology |
| Ph.D. | MAKAUT itself | Doctoral admission |
Four of the nine are the university's own papers, and only CET is described as covering programmes outside AICTE's remit. JEMAT is the most transparent of the four: the paper is English for 40 marks, Mathematics for 40 and Logical Reasoning for 20, with final-year candidates eligible to sit it. PGET is sat by subject code rather than as one common paper, so an M.Tech in Geo-Informatics accepts candidates coded CSE, CV, ECE, EE, GEN, GEO or IT while an M.Pharm accepts only PHRM, and a GATE score is accepted in place of PGET for Industrial Engineering and Management.
For undergraduate engineering the practical answer is simpler. Sit WBJEE, get a rank, and enter the state counselling with MAKAUT's own participating institute code 104638.
Cutoff
WBJEE publishes opening and closing ranks institute by institute, and MAKAUT's in-house branches appear in every round. These are ranks in the WBJEE merit list, not marks, and they move between rounds as candidates withdraw.
| Branch | Quota and category | Round 1 closing | Round 3 closing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science & Engineering | All India, Open | 3308 | 3165 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Home State, OBC | 5270 | 5042 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Home State, SC | 10901 | 10847 |
| Information Technology | All India, Open | 4978 | 4426 |
| Information Technology | Home State, EWS | 12680 | 18462 |
| Electronics (VLSI Design and Technology) | All India, Open | 6121 | 5675 |
| Industrial Engineering | All India, Open | 12030 | 10470 |
| CSE, tuition fee waiver | Home State | 2867 | 2068 |
Two patterns in that report are worth reading before you fill choices. The tuition fee waiver seat is the hardest thing to get here, closing at 2068 in computer science while the paid unreserved seat closed at 3165, which is the opposite of the intuition that a free seat is a consolation prize. And every unreserved MAKAUT row in the report sits under the All India quota; the home-state rows the board publishes for this campus are the reserved categories, the persons-with-disability sub-quotas and the fee waiver seats. Other West Bengal institutes in the same report do carry home-state open rows, so a Bengal candidate competing for a general seat here is competing on the all-India list.
Placements
The placement record the university publishes is a named list, not a statistic, and nothing on any of these sheets covers an affiliated college. The 2026 sheet covers a season still running: it stands at 28 students so far, and names Infosys, TCS and IBM against BTech CSE, BTech IT and MCA entries. The 2025 sheet closed at 21, with Accenture, Cognizant and Wipro among the recruiters. The 2024 sheet is far longer at 92 names and adds Deloitte, JSW Steel, Genpact and Jubilant FoodWorks. No salary, package or median appears on any of them.
The longer series sits in the accreditation report, and it describes an earlier and much better period. Against outgoing cohorts of 714, 227, 138, 132 and 108 students from 2021-22 back to 2017-18, the university reported 567, 204, 118, 118 and 96 placed, an average it states as 86.61 per cent, with a further 50 students progressing to higher education in the last of those years. Set that beside the named lists from 2024 onward and the honest reading is that the two datasets do not describe the same years and cannot be stitched into a trend. What you can take from them is the recruiter profile, which is steady: volume IT services hiring, with the occasional manufacturing or analytics employer.
Seat Matrix
What the state board publishes for this campus at the moment is a vacancy table, not an intake table, and the difference matters. After the main WBJEE 2026 rounds closed, the board opened a decentralised phase to fill what was left, and all four of MAKAUT's in-house B.Tech branches still had seats in it.
| Branch | Programme ID | Seats vacant at Phase 1, Round 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science & Engineering | 10033NN | 29 |
| Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology) | 12888NN | 28 |
| Industrial Engineering | 105211N | 37 |
| Information Technology | 10017NN | 25 |
Those four branches are the whole of the university's own B.Tech offering, and the fee sheet lists the same four and no others. Its programmes page has not caught up with that: the INHOUSE table there names a sanctioned intake of 60 for BTech CSE and 60 for BTech IT and does not name the VLSI electronics or industrial engineering branches at all. Treat the seat column on that page as out of date and confirm intake with the admissions office rather than inferring it. The vacancy document runs to eighteen pages of West Bengal institutes and this university occupies four lines of it, because the colleges on its own affiliated list are counted separately: JIS College of Engineering, Narula Institute of Technology, Heritage Institute of Technology and Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology each carry a PI code of their own in the same vacancy table.
Rankings
Two entries in India Rankings 2025 carry this university's name, and they point in opposite directions. The pharmacy entry is new: 83rd in Pharmacy on a score of 43.54, with 69.59 for teaching, learning and resources, 64.56 for graduation outcomes, 46.50 for outreach and inclusivity, 14.50 for research and professional practice and 7.47 for perception, tied on score with DIT University, in a category where the 2024 pharmacy table does not list MAKAUT anywhere. Those five numbers describe a school NIRF judges reasonably equipped to teach, barely present in published research, and almost unknown to the academics and employers it surveys.
Engineering went the other way. MAKAUT is listed in the 2024 engineering table and again in the 2025 engineering table, each time inside a rank-band rather than at a numbered position, and the band it occupies in 2025 sits below the one it occupied in 2024. A band is a range, so what moved is the range the ministry places it in and not a single position.
The university-level tables tell the same story. MAKAUT is printed in the India Rankings 2024 list of State Public Universities in the rank-band 51 to 100, a line its homepage banner still runs. Neither the 2025 ranked positions nor the 2025 band beneath them carries it. A table you are absent from is not a score against you, and an institution can leave one by not submitting, but it does settle which year the banner is quoting.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The library is the one facility here that serves both halves of the university, and that is not an accident of policy. The university library resource is open to all students and faculty members of affiliated colleges, who need only bring a college ID card to use the reading room, the shelves and the e-resources. Founded in 2004, it now holds roughly 23000 print books across about 8000 titles and 10131 e-books, runs on Koha with a student login for reservations and reading history, seats 100 in a fourth-floor reading room and 50 more at digital library terminals, and sees around 200 users a day. A Braille unit on the ground floor holds 237 Braille and talking books.
The rest of the campus is described in the accreditation report rather than on the website. It records 56 classrooms and seminar halls and 1325 computers for academic purposes, along with a medical unit, a day care centre, an animal house for biological research and separate gymnasiums. Hostel capacity is given there as around 600 boarders for boys and around 300 for girls. Residence costs Rs 20250 at the time of admission and Rs 9700 for each subsequent semester. The university's own hostel page lists only a boys hostel, a girls hostel and a canteen with no further detail, so allotment rules and room sharing are questions for the hostel office.
Hostel
Faculty
MAKAUT's own teaching staff is small and was built quickly. Full-time teachers on its rolls went from 21 in 2017-18 to 145 in 2021-22, against 286 sanctioned posts, with 95 of those 145 holding a doctorate. Over the same period its own student strength rose from 460 to 3410, and the number of departments offering academic programmes reached 30. That headcount predates the structure those teachers now sit in, which the university revised as recently as September 2026 and which runs to thirteen schools, from the School of Computer Science & Engineering and the School of Information Science & Technology to the School of Legal Studies and the School of Pharmaceutical Science & Health Care Technology.
None of those figures describe who will teach you at an affiliated college. Faculty there are appointed by the college, and the university's role is to ratify syllabus and conduct examinations: affiliated colleges can suggest establishment of elective papers, frame their syllabus and get it ratified by the University Academic Council at UG level. Ask the college for its own faculty list.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Accreditation here covers the campus and the university's systems, not the teaching quality of any affiliated college. The university is included in Section 2F and also in Section 12B of UGC and recipient of UGC Grant, which is the status that makes its degrees and its eligibility for central funding straightforward.
On NAAC, the university's own published record stops one cycle short. Its self study report, submitted to NAAC in November 2022 for the second cycle of accreditation, states the first cycle outcome as grade B++ with a CGPA of 2.87. NAAC's register of institutions holding valid accreditation now carries the university at B++ in its second cycle, a shade below the first cycle score. The grade sheet for that cycle appears nowhere on the university site and no peer team report for it sits on the IQAC page, so the current certificate is a document to request from the registrar rather than to download.
Aid
Scholarships
The scholarship page the university maintains is a directory of other people's money, and it was last revised in 2023. What it points students at is worth having: Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means, all three Kanyashree tiers, Aikyashree for minority students, post-matric support for SC, ST and OBC students, the National Scholarship Portal, GATE scholarship, PMSSS for Jammu and Kashmir candidates, and the state talent support stipend. Research students are pointed separately at Non-NET Junior Research Fellowship and NET lectureship funding.
The directory is not the whole of it. The university's accreditation report says outright that scholarships are available to meritorious students, girl children and to those from the economically disadvantaged sections of the society. These scholarships are granted by the Government and own Institutional Funds, and it records 923 students benefiting from scholarships and freeships in 2021-22 against 38 at the start of the same five-year series, in 2017-18. Since the size and the eligibility rules of the institutional awards appear nowhere public, ask the students' welfare office what one is worth before you count on it.
Worth separating from all of the above, because the two are routinely confused: the tuition fee waiver seat described in the fee section is not a scholarship. It is a seat category allotted on WBJEE rank, you claim it during choice filling, and no scholarship application recovers it if you miss the closing rank.

Student Reviews
There is no star rating here, and the obstacle is structural rather than a shortage of opinions. A student review written about MAKAUT is nearly always a review of whichever college awards the degree, since that is where the classrooms, the labs, the hostel and the placement cell in question sit. Rolling several hundred such experiences into one figure produces a score nobody actually lived, and the sites that publish one seldom record which campus the reviewer attended.
If you are deciding, the more useful questions are ones a current student can answer and a review score cannot. At Haringhata, ask whether a hostel seat was actually available to first years last session, because the capacities the university last published are four years old and it said then that both halls were being expanded. At an affiliated college, ask how long your college took to publish results after the university released them, since examination processing is the one service performed for every student on the rolls and a delay there reaches every college it affiliates.

This page carries no photographs. The university's own picture archive has not been cleared for republication, and pulling stock shots off a listing site to fill a heading would tell you nothing true about Haringhata. If you are hunting images before an allotment decision, skip the entrance gate and look for the academic blocks and the hostels, because full academic functioning only moved to this campus in 2018 and building has carried on around it since.
