Indian Institute Of Technology (indian School Of Mines), Dhanbad

IIT ISM Dhanbad began as a mining school. It was inaugurated in Dhanbad on 9 December 1926 as the Indian School of Mines and Applied Geology, by the then Viceroy Lord Irwin, and for decades it trained the engineers who ran the country's coal and mineral fields. That origin still shapes the place. It became a full Indian Institute of Technology only on 6 September 2016, and it keeps departments in mining, petroleum, applied geology and applied geophysics that most other IITs do not teach at all. Ninety years as a school of mines, then a decade inside the IIT system, is the tension that runs through everything below, from where the institute ranks to who turns up to recruit.

Overview

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is a public Institute of National Importance in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, in the heart of the Jharia coalfield. It carries two names for a reason: the parenthetical "Indian School of Mines" is the institution it was for ninety years, and the bracket was kept when the tag of an Indian Institute of Technology was awarded on 6 September 2016. Between those two dates it had already been granted university status in 1967, so the 2016 change was a rebadging of a mature institution rather than the birth of a new one.

What sets ISM apart from a newer IIT is the subject mix, not the age. Its centre of gravity is still mineral resources, energy and the earth sciences, and the rest of the engineering and science menu has grown outward from that base. For an applicant the useful way to read it is as an IIT with a real specialism, strongest in precisely the fields the wider IIT system barely covers.

Courses & Fees

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad runs the standard IIT degree ladder, a four-year B.Tech, five-year integrated dual degrees, two-year master's programmes, an MBA and a large doctoral school, but its flagship four- and five-year seats are in mining, petroleum, applied geology and applied geophysics rather than the usual core branches alone. The institute publishes its fees per year, not per semester, and splits them into tuition and a set of fixed charges. For a first-year student joining through JoSAA, the official fee structure lists the following.

Fee head (per year)GEN / OBC-NCL / EWSSC / ST / PwD
TuitionRs 1,00,000Nil
Other feesRs 41,400Rs 41,400
JoSAA processingRs 5,000Rs 5,000
MessRs 19,500Rs 19,500
TotalRs 1,65,900Rs 65,900

The tuition line is income-tested, so the Rs 1,00,000 is a ceiling rather than a flat charge. Document a general-category family income below Rs 1 lakh a year and the tuition is waived in full; between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh it drops to Rs 33,333. On top of that, the ten highest rankers with a JEE (Advanced) Common Rank List position up to 1000 keep a full tuition waiver for the whole of their undergraduate programme. The headline tuition, then, is what higher-income general-category families pay, not the price every student meets.

Admissions

The gate you sit depends on the programme, not on the IIT badge. The four-year B.Tech and the five-year integrated dual degrees are filled through JEE (Advanced), which a candidate can attempt only after clearing the JEE (Main) cut-off, followed by the common JoSAA counselling that allocates seats across all the IITs. There is no separate institute test and no aptitude paper for these programmes; the JEE (Advanced) rank and the branch preferences a student enters into JoSAA together decide the offer.

For the postgraduate programmes the exam changes with the degree. GATE opens the M.Tech and M.Tech-by-research seats, CAT opens the two-year MBA that the Department of Management Studies runs, the IIT Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (JAM) opens the M.Sc streams, and the doctoral school admits on its own written test and interview. The workable approach for a would-be ISM student is to fix on the exact degree first, then track back to the one exam that opens it, and to confirm the current eligibility on the institute's admission pages, which are revised every cycle.

Cutoff

Undergraduate admission turns on one figure, the All India Rank from JEE (Advanced), converted into a seat through JoSAA. Because JoSAA fills seats over several rounds and closes each branch separately for every category and quota, the number that actually governs entry is the last rank still holding a seat when a branch fills, and it is fixed only once the final round shuts. A single "ISM cutoff" therefore does not exist; the closing rank for computer science is nothing like the one for a mineral-resource branch in the same year.

ISM joined the IIT system only in 2016, so across the board its branches have tended to close at ranks the older IITs closed years earlier. The spread inside that average is wide. Computer science and electronics fill early, while the mining, petroleum and geoscience seats, the ones the institute is built around, draw a narrower field and close later. The only figure that binds is the one JoSAA posts after its final round: the closing rank against your exact branch, category and quota, for the year you appear, on the official JoSAA portal.

Placements

The placement medians at ISM swing hard by programme length, so the sheet is only honest read line by line. These are the counts the institute filed with NIRF for the batches that graduated in 2023-24.

ProgrammeGraduated in minimum timePlacedMedian salary (Rs)Higher studies
UG 4-year (B.Tech)88471412,00,00033
UG 5-year (integrated)796814,43,0001
PG 2-year5363329,00,00055
PG 3-year102589,50,0009

Two figures repay a second look. The five-year integrated median of Rs 14,43,000 lands above the four-year B.Tech median of Rs 12,00,000, but it rests on a small cohort of 68 placed students and has moved around from year to year, so treat it as one year's reading rather than a settled premium. The postgraduate medians, at Rs 9,00,000 and Rs 9,50,000, sit clearly below both undergraduate figures.

The B.Tech median itself came down over a single year, from the Rs 15,00,000 the institute reported for its 2022-23 cohort to Rs 12,00,000 for 2023-24. One year's median is a thin basis for a decision, so read the most recent filing before you fix on any number as the one to expect.

Seat Matrix

ISM does not run a single headline intake; its seats split across four programme bands, and the split shows where the institute concentrates them. Its approved intake for 2023-24 was as follows.

Programme bandSanctioned intake 2023-24
UG 4-year1028
UG 5-year97
PG 2-year940
PG 3-year121

The 1028 four-year seats carry the bulk of the undergraduate cohort across the full engineering range, and the 97-seat five-year band is where the integrated mineral-resource degrees sit. Which of those seats a given rank can actually contest comes down to the category-wise split, and that is published fresh in the JoSAA seat matrix each cycle, so read that notification for the year you apply rather than the totals above.

Rankings

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's 2025 NIRF results carry a gap worth understanding: it ranks much higher on what it produces than on how it is perceived. Its engineering standing is well inside the national top 15, while its overall position sits lower.

NIRF 2025 categoryRankScore
Overall3558.33
Engineering1565.37
Research2754.28
Management4854.34

The sub-scores behind the overall rank of 35 explain the gap. On the engineering table ISM scores 72.84 on teaching and learning resources and 77.02 on graduation outcomes, but only 32.29 on perception, and on the overall table its perception score is lower still at 23.19. Perception, the survey of employers and academics, is where a decade-old IIT brand lags an older one, so ISM's overall rank reads as a reputation lag rather than a weakness in what it teaches or how its graduates fare.

Departments

The academic structure keeps the institute's founding subjects at the centre. Alongside the standard engineering and science departments, ISM runs Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, and Fuel, Minerals and Metallurgical Engineering, a cluster of earth- and energy-resource disciplines that few other IITs carry, and the reason a mining or geoscience applicant treats Dhanbad as a first choice.

Around that core sit the departments an applicant would expect at any IIT: Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical and Environmental Science and Engineering, the science departments of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Physics and Mathematics and Computing, and the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering with Humanities and Social Sciences. For a student the takeaway is that ISM offers the full engineering menu, but the departments that make it distinctive are the ones tied to mines, wells and the ground itself.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus sits in Sardar Patel Nagar, Dhanbad, and its defining feature is location as much as buildings: putting a mining and earth-science institute in the Jharia coalfield gave generations of students working mines, seams and geological formations within reach of the classroom. That field access is part of what the mineral-resource departments are built on, and it is not something a metro campus can replicate.

The other thing that shapes a student's day here is the sheer volume of funded research. In 2023-24 the institute reported 242 sponsored projects backed by 62 agencies, worth Rs 42,80,52,879 in all, alongside 117 consultancy jobs. At that scale a department's labs are usually running live, externally funded work, which puts the equipment and the questions closer to industry than a teaching-only lab would. The current facility list, hall by hall and lab by lab, is on the institute's own website.

Hostel

Every ISM student lives on campus, and in a compact steel-and-coal town like Dhanbad the hall becomes the centre of student life almost by default, since there is little to pull a student off site on a weekend. The only recurring hostel figure in the official fee structure is the mess charge of Rs 19,500 a year; room rent and the other hostel heads are set separately by the Dean of Student Welfare's office.

With the campus largely self-contained, the halls carry the fests, the inter-hall contests and most of the social calendar. The current allotment rules, room rents and mess terms are published on the institute's student-welfare pages, and those are the binding numbers to confirm before joining.

Faculty

Staffing at ISM leans towards research. The institute listed 459 faculty members across its departments in its NIRF submission.

Under that faculty sits a large doctoral cohort: 992 full-time and 380 part-time PhD scholars, with 190 full-time doctorates awarded in 2023-24. For an undergraduate the practical effect is that the people running the teaching labs are frequently research students, and moving on to a research degree at ISM itself is a common next step, which is part of why 55 of the 2023-24 two-year master's cohort left for further study rather than a job.

Notable Alumni

The names ISM is proudest of tend to come from the earth sciences it pioneered. The seismologist Harsh K. Gupta, known for his work on reservoir-induced earthquakes, trained in applied geophysics at the Indian School of Mines and was later awarded the Padma Shri, and he is one of a line of ISM geoscientists who went on to lead national research bodies.

Beyond any single name, the institute's distinctive contribution has been to the mineral, petroleum and geoscience workforce, the sectors its founding departments were built to serve. We name an individual only where the record is clearly traceable, so this section stays short rather than listing unverified names; the institute maintains its own alumni pages for the fuller roll.

News & Articles

There is no live news feed on this page. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad posts its admission notices, the JEE (Advanced) seat matrix and each year's placement figures on its own site first, and those numbers reset every cycle, so the primary sources cited above are the ones to refresh when the next year's data appears.

College Compare

The honest comparison for ISM is not against the top of the IIT table but against the handful of institutes that teach what it teaches. Its NIRF 2025 engineering rank of 15 trails the founding IITs, yet in mining, petroleum, applied geology and applied geophysics it has almost no peer inside the IIT system, because most IITs do not run those departments at all. So the choice against a broader IIT comes down to what you want to study: for mineral-resource or earth-science engineering, few Indian institutes rival Dhanbad, while for a general computer-science seat you are weighing ISM's name and its coalfield location as much as its rank.

Contact & Location

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad sits in Sardar Patel Nagar, in the city of Dhanbad in Jharkhand, and its official website is iitism.ac.in. Dhanbad is one of the busier junctions on the Howrah-Delhi grand chord, so most families and new students reach it by train rather than by air, and that rail-first access is worth planning a first visit around.
