Indian Institute Of Science Education & Research (iiser), Mohali
Getting into IISER Mohali's flagship degree now comes down to one national exam. The institute admits undergraduates only through the IISER Aptitude Test, runs them through a five-year BS-MS built around bench research, and does it from the Knowledge City science precinct at Sector 81 in SAS Nagar, on the Mohali edge of the Chandigarh tricity rather than inside a metro. The seat is worth understanding on its real terms: how the single-exam admission works, what the 2025-26 fee sheet actually charges, which sciences the institute teaches, and where it places in NIRF 2025.
Overview
IISER Mohali opened in 2007 as the third of the seven IISERs, following Pune and Kolkata, and the central government runs it as an autonomous Institute of National Importance, the legal footing under which it frames and confers its own degrees. It was built for one purpose: to teach the basic sciences and carry out research in them in the same place, so an undergraduate reaches a laboratory in the first years rather than after a separate degree.
Everything downstream is shaped by that narrow purpose. There is no engineering wing, no law or business school and no chain of affiliated colleges; the work sits in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and the earth and environmental sciences, with the humanities kept alongside them. Choosing IISER Mohali means choosing one science to go deep in and a research path out the far side, not a broad professional campus in a city.
Courses & Fees
At the centre sits the five-year BS-MS, a single dual degree taken directly after Class 12. Its early years spread across the sciences, a major is picked once a student knows the ground, and a final year of supervised research earns the MS half of the qualification. Alongside it run an Integrated PhD, which folds two years of coursework and project work into the doctoral track, and a standalone PhD that admits in two cycles a year through coursework, a qualifying examination and a thesis.
Mohali does something most aggregator pages skip: it puts the real BS-MS fee sheet online, session by session, through the dean's office. For 2025-26 tuition is the largest line at Rs 48,800 a semester, with statutory dues, hostel-seat rent, examination, amenities and a health-insurance head stacked on top. The bill is not flat across the ten semesters. Semester I is the steepest because the one-time caution money is collected there; the convocation and alumni charges land in Semester II; after that the odd and even semesters settle into two recurring totals.
| Fee head, BS-MS 2025-26 | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition fee, per semester | Rs 48,800 |
| Semester I, total payable | Rs 67,483 |
| Semester II, total payable | Rs 59,578 |
| Odd semesters (III, V, VII, IX), total | Rs 60,512 |
| Even semesters (IV, VI, VIII, X), total | Rs 55,948 |
Two footnotes on that sheet matter. It exempts SC, ST and PD candidates from tuition, the single biggest head, and it states plainly that mess is billed on top of every figure shown. The larger offset comes from outside the institute: a student reading for a BS-MS in the natural and basic sciences is exactly who the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education is written for, and it hands over Rs 80,000 each year toward an integrated bachelor's-and-master's science degree. For anyone who qualifies, that covers a sizeable slice of a year at Mohali.
Admissions
There is a single gate into the BS-MS, and it is a written test. A candidate registers for the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), the common computer-based exam the IISERs run jointly, and nothing else stands in for it. The channels that used to exist are closed: the KVPY fellowship that once carried students straight in has been wound up, and neither a high board percentage nor a JEE rank buys a seat any more. Applicants are placed purely by IAT rank through the joint counselling the IISERs share, and Mohali fills its seats from that same ranked list.
The exam stays inside the Class 11 and 12 science syllabus a first-year is assumed to know, testing physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology together in one paper. So the target is legible even if clearing it is not easy: work the official IAT syllabus and the current year's admission notice, because the eligibility rules and counselling steps are reset each cycle and a forum thread from a past year describes a process that has since moved on. The Integrated PhD and PhD streams recruit on separate calendars that have nothing to do with the IAT.
Cutoff
There is no fixed IISER Mohali cutoff worth memorising. A place turns on where an IAT rank sits when the counselling rounds distribute seats across all the IISERs, worked out separately for every category and every institute-and-discipline pairing, and the closing rank shifts from year to year with how hard the paper was and how many people appeared.
The "expected cutoffs" that surface online before results are estimates, not commitments, and reading one as a guarantee is how applicants misjudge where they stand. The only ranks that bind are the closing ranks published at the end of each counselling round, and they are specific to that round: a rank that is enough for a discipline at Mohali in one round need not be enough for it in the next, and can clear another IISER while falling short here.
Placements
Judging IISER Mohali by a placement package measures the wrong thing. The BS-MS is built to end in a doctorate, not a job offer: for most graduates the next move is a PhD in India or abroad, and the research year is there partly to make that application land. There is no headline campus-recruitment salary to quote because the institute does not run its degree as a feeder into corporate hiring, and it publishes no placement report of that kind.
None of that confines graduates to universities. Genuine time in a laboratory opens research-and-development posts, data and analytics work, science writing and jobs in public research agencies. But if the whole point of the five years is a corporate offer at the end, this is the wrong institute to spend them at, and it is better to face that squarely before enrolling.
Seat Matrix
How many BS-MS seats Mohali offers, and how they break down, is set by the seat matrix released with each IAT counselling cycle. Seats are drawn from the common IAT merit list and apportioned across the disciplines and the reserved categories the counselling authority operates. Because both the total intake and the category split are fixed afresh every admission year, the live matrix for the current cycle is the document to read, not a figure carried over from a previous one.
Rankings
IISER Mohali enters the NIRF 2025 Overall table at 70, and it is worth noting where it does not appear: the institute carries no separate NIRF research ranking, so the Overall list is the single place the framework scores it. The headline number tells less than the shape behind it.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 70 | 52.68 |
The five NIRF parameters do not contribute evenly. Graduation Outcomes and Outreach and Inclusivity are the pillars holding the score up, teaching resources sit a notch below them, and the two weak points are Perception, drawn from a reputational survey, and Research and Professional Practice. That pattern is the honest mark of a young institute whose public name and citation base are both still forming.
| NIRF 2025 pillar (Overall category) | Weighted score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) | 62.90 |
| Research and Professional Practice (RPC) | 34.68 |
| Graduation Outcomes (GO) | 72.82 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) | 71.14 |
| Perception | 17.42 |
Departments
Mohali runs six departments. Five are pure sciences - Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Earth and Environmental Sciences - and the sixth is Humanities and Social Sciences, kept in a science institute on purpose so the BS-MS carries a humanities strand through the degree rather than dropping it after school.
For a prospective student these six are where the real choice sits, more than the institute name on the certificate, because the group that will shape a BS-MS project or a doctoral thesis lives inside one specific department. Set against another IISER, then, Mohali is best judged by which of its departments owns the problems you actually want to work on.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The campus is purpose-built, sitting in Knowledge City in Sector 81 of SAS Nagar - the planned education-and-research precinct laid out on the Mohali edge of the Chandigarh tricity rather than on an old inner-city plot. It is arranged around teaching blocks, departmental laboratories and a residential core, which is what the integrated model looks like in brick: the laboratories a first-year is meant to be in stand a few minutes from the hostels.
Mohali's version of the research-campus trade is a gentler one than most. Knowledge City is a self-contained academic precinct, but it sits inside the Chandigarh tricity rather than deep in the countryside, so a city is close without being on the doorstep. What the campus is built to guarantee is that the laboratories and the people running them are on hand across the long hours the model assumes. Anything specific to a named lab or facility is best checked on the institute's own site, which carries the current campus detail.
Hostel
IISER Mohali is a residential institute, so a BS-MS student lives on campus by default rather than by choice, and the fee sheet shows it, with hostel-seat rent and a hostel-admission head written into the semester bill. Boarding on site is what makes the first-year lab exposure and the long stretches of research time practical, and it pulls student life into the institute's own clubs and activities inside Knowledge City rather than out into the tricity. Room and mess rates are set and revised by the institute, and mess in particular sits outside the published tuition-and-hostel figures, so the current-year number is worth confirming on the official site.
Faculty
At Mohali the person teaching a course is, as a rule, also the person running a laboratory, and that overlap is the point of the model rather than a bonus. Across the six departments the teaching staff are working researchers, and a BS-MS student is meant to get inside that work early instead of only hearing it recounted in lectures. What builds the institute's name among peers is what those groups publish; Mohali scientists have taken national research honours, among them a Department of Science and Technology Swarnajayanti Fellowship for work on the symmetries of geometric objects.
For an undergraduate the model has one clear payoff and one honest catch. The payoff is early access: a BS-MS student can be working in a live laboratory well before the final research year, with that closing project supervised by someone at the front of the field. The catch is that quality is group-specific - it tracks the particular lab you join, not an institute-wide average - which is why the discipline you commit to at Mohali does more to shape the five years than the overall brand does.
Notable Alumni
IISER Mohali is a young institute, and its public reputation is being written now, mostly through where its BS-MS graduates go for doctoral study and the research its faculty publish rather than through a long roll of famous names. We do not name alumni we cannot tie to a reliable record, which keeps the list short rather than padding it with unverified names that circulate online. The more telling measure for a place this size is the share of each graduating cohort that moves into serious research, which is the outcome the degree is built to produce.
News & Articles
What actually changes from year to year at Mohali is the paperwork of admission and academics: the IAT dates, the counselling and registration windows, the fee sheet for the next session and departmental research notices all go up on the official site as the cycle turns. For anything time-stamped, that page is the source, not a second-hand recap that may already be a year out of date. The slower, more durable news is the science itself, the work coming out of the six departments, which is what a focused institute this size is finally judged by.
College Compare
The instinctive comparison an applicant reaches for is IISER Mohali against an IIT, but the two are built for different careers, so it settles little: the IITs are engineering-first around the B.Tech, while Mohali is basic-science-first around the BS-MS, and someone holding both a JEE and an IAT result should choose by the subject they want to spend a life on, not by relative prestige.
Within the IISER family the differences are narrower and more practical: the model is shared, so what separates the campuses is location, the exact department mix, and which research groups are on site. Mohali's own pitch on that list is its setting - a Knowledge City campus inside the Chandigarh tricity rather than a remote one - together with its particular six-department spread. So line up the exact subject and the particular lab you would join at Mohali beside what each rival campus offers in that field, and let that decide it; a single pooled ranking only buries the difference.
Contact & Location
IISER Mohali sits at Knowledge City, Sector 81, SAS Nagar, Manauli PO, 140306, in Punjab, inside the Chandigarh tricity rather than in Chandigarh city proper. Treat the official website as the authority for anything that moves during the year. The precise postal address and the office directory are listed there, the admission portal links out to the IAT site, and each section publishes its own phone and email rather than routing through a single switchboard.
