NIPER Mohali put 244 masters seats into the 2026 admission round, more seats than any of the six later institutes that share its name. It also carries the largest self financing block among them, and that is the fact a single annual fee figure hides: the discipline you pick decides whether a stipend of ₹12,400 a month arrives with the seat or whether nothing does. The institute topped the government's Pharmacy ranking table in 2018 and sits ninth in the most recent one, which is a second thing worth understanding before you set a counselling preference.

Overview

NIPER at S.A.S. Nagar is the original. The Government of India set it up as the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences, declared it an Institute of National Importance, and runs it as an autonomous body under the Department of Pharmaceuticals in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, on the institute's about page. The campus occupies 130 acres at Sector 67 in Mohali, about 250 km north of Delhi, on the same page. Its director, Prof. Dulal Panda, puts the location at the centre of the pitch in his message: the campus sits in the pharmaceutical active ingredient belt of North India, and the training is built to send students into that industry ready to work in it.

The legal history has two dates and both matter. The institute began in 1991 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and became an Institute of National Importance only when the NIPER Act of 1998 gave it statutory recognition, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. That Act was written for this campus before there were any others to apply it to, and the entrance test the whole system now uses is still run from here.

Output over three decades is the clearest measure of what has been built. The institute counts 3,877 masters graduates, 873 M.B.A. graduates and 440 doctorates since it opened, alongside 3,870 research papers and 285 patent filings of which 134 have been granted, in the same brochure. Research here is pointed at five declared thrust areas rather than spread thin: tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, leishmaniasis and immunomodulation, listed on the about page.

Courses & Fees

Four degree names cover the taught side of this campus, M.S. (Pharm.), M.Pharm., M.Tech. (Pharm.) and M.B.A. (Pharm.), and fourteen disciplines are spread across them, with doctoral work grouped separately into three broad sciences, on the institute's academic programmes page. Three of those disciplines exist at no other NIPER. Traditional Medicine, Clinical Research and Pharmaceutical Technology (Biotechnology) were offered only at Mohali in the last admission round, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure.

The fee is published head by head across the NIPER system rather than as one annual number, which is why the figures circulating on college listing sites disagree with each other. Read the science masters and the management degree as two separate schedules.

Fee head, M.S. (Pharm.), M.Pharm. and M.Tech.General, OBC, EWSSC, STGovernment or industry sponsored
One time charges before admission₹48,496₹48,496₹75,698

Total for each semester₹1,28,699₹16,731₹2,30,294
Payable before admission, first semester₹1,81,195₹69,227₹3,05,992

A single line rewrites both of those bills. Tuition is nil for SC and ST candidates on either schedule, and the M.B.A. shows what that is worth: ₹69,227 due before admission in place of ₹1,81,195. The third column runs the other way, because a candidate released by a government department or a pharmaceutical employer pays ₹92,535 every semester on the science schedule, the sponsoring organisation being expected to carry that bill rather than the student. Foreign nationals sit on a fourth scale entirely, 2500 US dollars at admission and 1300 US dollars each later semester for the science masters, in section 4.1.3 of the same brochure.

The doctoral schedule is a heavier version of the same document. Tuition is identical to the science masters at ₹26,022 a semester, but the laboratory fee doubles to ₹22,960 and the hostel rent rises, which is what pushes the first payment to ₹1,22,367 and each later semester to ₹71,705, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Ph.D. information brochure. The nil tuition rule carries across, so the same two lines read ₹96,345 and ₹45,683 for SC and ST scholars, and thesis evaluation charges land separately at submission.

A separate route into the campus does not go through NIPER JEE at all. The institute currently advertises an Industry-Ready Pharma Graduate Professional Training Certificate Programme starting on 1 September 2026, an online certificate course in Computational Pharmaceutics starting on 1 November 2026, and an executive postgraduate diploma in Regulatory Sciences, all on its home page. None of these is a degree, and none of them is a way into the masters programme, but for a working pharmacy graduate they are the only doors here that a NIPER JEE rank does not guard.

Admissions

Admission to every NIPER is decided by one paper, and the office that runs it sits on this campus. The brochure's own disclaimer names the NIPER JEE Office at NIPER Mohali as the body coordinating the examination, and an applicant applies once, takes one computer based test and then picks institutes and disciplines in a common online counselling, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. Chandigarh and Mohali count as a single test centre city, one of the 20 the same brochure lists, so a candidate from this district writes the paper at home while most of the field travels.

Two separate gates stand in front of the entrance test, and clearing one does not excuse the other. One is a live national fellowship scorecard, GPAT or GATE or NET or an equivalent, which only a medical, dental, ayurvedic or veterinary degree holder, a foreign national or a sponsored candidate is excused from producing. The other is the marksheet: 60% in aggregate, or 6.75 on a ten point CGPA, dropping to 6.25 for SC and ST candidates and to 5.75 where a benchmark disability is certified, in the same brochure. A strong entrance score repairs neither.

Final year students are not shut out, but the terms are strict enough to plan around. Anyone completing final semester examinations on or before 31 July 2026 could apply, provided they produced a bonafide certificate from the head of their college and an undertaking on non judicial stamp paper worth ₹100 stating that they surrender the allotted seat if the result is not declared by 15 September 2026, per the brochure.

The management seat runs on its own rails. M.B.A. (Pharm.) candidates take NIPER JEE and then a group discussion and an interview, and only two institutes offered the degree at all in the 2026 round: Mohali with 60 seats and Hyderabad with 40, in the NIPER JEE 2026 seat matrix for masters programmes. Three more blocks are added on top of the grid rather than carved out of it. Employer sponsored candidates take 5%, foreign nationals with OCI and PIO holders take a further 5%, and candidates with benchmark disabilities take no less than 3%, in the brochure.

Cutoff

There is no cutoff to quote. Neither the institute nor the NIPER JEE office puts out a closing rank or a qualifying mark for Mohali, and allotment simply walks down the merit list until the seats run out. Where you meet a Mohali cutoff broken out by category, sometimes projected a year forward, you are reading a listing site's arithmetic rather than a NIPER document.

Something better does get published before every round, and almost nobody quotes it. The counselling office releases the sheet of seats still unfilled, and the Mohali page of that sheet shows exactly how long the queue for this institute lasted.

Counselling stageMohali seats still vacantWhich seats
Going into phase II11, plus 7 held for candidates with disabilitiesSpread across Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Pharmacy Practice, Biopharmaceuticals and Biotechnology
Going into phase III0, plus 2 held for candidates with disabilitiesBoth remaining seats without fellowship
Going into phase IV0, plus the same 2 disability seatsOnly without fellowship lines are listed for Mohali, every one of them at zero

The second row is where the institute stops behaving like the first. Once phase II closed, the general queue at Mohali was empty and the only seats left in the institute were the two reserved for candidates with benchmark disabilities, on the phase III vacancy sheet. By the fourth phase the sheet had stopped carrying Mohali's fellowship disciplines at all and listed only its without fellowship lines, every one at zero, while Hajipur and Raebareli still had seats in several disciplines each, on the phase IV vacancy sheet.

The instruction that falls out of this is not subtle. Take the Mohali seat in whichever phase you are first offered it, because holding out for a better allotment means holding out for a round in which this institute has nothing left to give.

Placements

₹6,75,000 is the number to plan around. That is the median salary reported for the 2024-25 postgraduate leavers, alongside 253 placements among the 295 students who finished on time, in the NIRF 2026 data submission the institute publishes on its own site. A median describes the middle of the placed group, and neither an average nor a best offer is published anywhere by the institute.

Graduating yearFinished in stipulated timePlacedMedian salaryWent to higher studies
2022-23268213₹6,05,00011
2023-24280235₹5,89,00010
2024-25295253₹6,75,00020

The median dipped before it recovered, and the dip is the part worth noticing. It fell to ₹5,89,000 for the class of 2023-24 from ₹6,35,000 two years earlier, recorded in the NIRF 2025 data submission, before climbing to ₹6,75,000 in the NIRF 2026 filing. A cohort here is large enough that a weak year for one discipline moves the whole median, so read the trend rather than any single line.

The table hides two other movements worth naming. Cohort size climbed through all three cycles and the placed share climbed with it, from 213 of 268 to 253 of 295, while the count leaving for further study doubled to 20 in the newest year, in the NIRF 2026 filing. On a research masters, a student picking a doctorate over an offer is not a failure of placement.

Nothing resembling a recruiter list or a campus placement report appears anywhere on niper.gov.in, so a named roster of hiring companies for this campus has come from somewhere other than NIPER. A placement fee of ₹4,000 sits in the one time charges on both the general and the SC and ST schedules regardless. The exception is the sponsorship seat, which arrives with an employer already attached and draws no placement assistance from the institute, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure.

Seat Matrix

Eighteen masters programmes shared the 244 seats Mohali offered in the 2026 counselling, in the NIPER JEE 2026 seat matrix for masters programmes, and the grid below is the one that governed allotment. The column that decides your cost is the third one.

Programme and disciplineWith fellowshipWithout fellowship

M.S. (Pharm.) Traditional Medicine2Nil

M.Tech. Pharmaceutical Technology (Process Chemistry)62
M.Tech. Medical Devices92
M.Tech. Biopharmaceuticals203
M.B.A. (Pharm.) Pharmaceutical ManagementNil60

Thirteen of the eighteen programmes carry at least some seats with nothing attached, and two of them, Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science and the M.B.A., are without one entirely. The consequence is a footnote in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure rather than a headline: no financial assistance is provided for these courses. Anyone weighing Pharmaceutics here against the same discipline somewhere else needs to know which column their offer came out of before the fee comparison means anything. The matrix also holds a small supernumerary block for candidates with benchmark disabilities, six of those seats carrying a fellowship and two not, in the seat matrix.

At doctoral level Mohali is the biggest of the seven by a wide margin. The 2026 round gave it 30 seats funded by the institute across ten disciplines and 6 more attached to specific projects with fixed durations, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Ph.D. seat matrix. The next largest institute funded allocation in that same document is 17.

One more number floats around this institute, and it is not the counselling grid. Sanctioned postgraduate intake was 257 seats for 2024-25, down from 305 the year before, in its NIRF 2026 data submission. Sanctioned strength is what the institute is approved to hold; the matrix above is what counselling actually put on the table.

Rankings

Rank 9, score 70.96: that is where the Ministry of Education's ranking framework left this campus in its most recent Pharmacy table, published for 2025 at the NIRF Pharmacy ranking. Its position has moved one way across five editions, from fourth in 2021 to ninth in each of the last two.

NIRF Pharmacy yearRankOverall score
2021474.52
2022475.78
2023673.58
2024970.86
2025970.96

The slide runs further back than that table shows. The institute records itself as first in the Pharmacy category in 2018, second in 2017 and third in both 2019 and 2020, on its own NIRF page. A campus that topped this table in 2018 sits ninth in the 2025 edition, and the parameter scores say why.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Teaching, Learning and Resources75.40
Research and Professional Practice54.43
Graduation Outcomes87.19
Outreach and Inclusivity61.48
Perception84.23
Overall70.96

Reputation is doing the heavy lifting here. A Perception score of 84.23 is the third highest in the whole 2025 Pharmacy table and by a wide margin the highest of the seven NIPERs, while Research and Professional Practice at 54.43 is the institute's weakest parameter and the one that has kept the overall score in the low seventies, in the NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking. Employers and academics still rate this campus close to the top of Indian pharmacy education; the research parameter that NIRF actually measures has not kept pace. A different ranking system reads it more generously: the institute records itself as first in India in the QS World University Rankings 2022 for Pharmacy and Pharmacology, on its ranking and awards page.

Departments

Teaching is organised into ten departments, and they do not line up neatly with the degrees on offer. Biotechnology, Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutical Management, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research, and Pharmacoinformatics are the ten named on the institute's departments page. Fourteen masters disciplines are distributed across them, which is why Pharmaceutical Technology on its own runs the Formulations, Process Chemistry and Biotechnology streams, and why one department covers both Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research.

The mismatch runs the other way too, and it matters when you set a preference. Traditional Medicine and Regulatory Toxicology are listed as masters disciplines on the academic programmes page but head no department of their own, and Biopharmaceuticals, the largest science block on the grid at 23 seats in the NIPER JEE 2026 seat matrix for masters programmes, appears on neither list. Medical Devices sits the opposite way round: it admitted 11 seats on that same grid and carries a department page in the site navigation, yet it is absent from the ten on the departments list. The seat matrix for the year you apply is the only reliable statement of what is actually admitting.

Doctoral applicants meet a third arrangement again, three broad groups instead of ten departments: Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences, on the academic programmes page. That is the level at which a doctoral application is made.

Facilities & Infrastructure

What separates this campus from a well equipped pharmacy college is the set of service centres that work for outside industry as well as for students. The Technology Development Centre is a formulation pilot plant built to current Good Manufacturing Practice at Grade D and ISO class 8, with a 200 kg batch capacity across 24,102 square feet, and the institute describes it as the only pharmaceutical formulation manufacturing pilot plant at institute level in India, on its central facilities page. The National Bioavailability Centre runs bioequivalence studies in a 24 bedded volunteer facility and is one of two centres in the world approved for bioequivalence work on fixed dose combination antitubercular formulations, on the same page.

FacilityWhat is there
National Toxicology CentreTest facility of 700 square metres for regulatory toxicity studies
Central Animal FacilityTwo storey breeding and experimental unit with a full time veterinarian
Small and Medium Pharmaceutical Industry CentreOperating since 23 February 2009 for small and medium pharmaceutical firms
PharmaGrid computing192 core Linux cluster, 64 core Windows cluster, 3.56 Tflops, over 15 terabytes of storage
Library and Information CentreFour floors, with journal archives, a chemical abstracts floor and a thesis section
Pharmaceutical Heritage CentreCollection tracing Indian health care from ancient systems to modern pharmaceuticals

That apparatus earns money as well as papers, and the trend is upward on both counts. The institute recorded 54 consultancy projects for 38 client organisations worth ₹1,45,77,015 in 2024-25 against 34 projects for 29 clients the year before, alongside 34 sponsored research projects from 9 funding agencies worth ₹3,99,98,576, in its NIRF 2026 data submission. Capital spending on new laboratory equipment reached ₹16,19,38,911 in the same year against ₹10,54,30,858 the year before, in the same filing, so the instrument park is being replaced faster than it is ageing.

Accessibility moved in the right direction between the last two filings. Lifts or ramps covered more than 60% of buildings in both, while specially designed toilets climbed from less than 40% of buildings in the NIRF 2025 submission to more than 60% in the NIRF 2026 submission. A percentage across a campus this size still says nothing about the building your own department occupies, so ask for a written answer about that block before accepting a seat.

Hostel

Every room on this campus is a single. Four halls named after Punjab's rivers hold the students: Beas with 202 single seated rooms for boys, Chenab with 156, Sutlej with 120, and Raavi with 128 single seated rooms for girls, on the institute's amenities page. That is 478 rooms for men against 128 for women, which is worth reading against the 289 male and 160 female postgraduates the institute reported on the roll in its NIRF 2026 data submission. Married students are housed separately in 18 units, and a furnished guest house doubles as visiting faculty accommodation, on the amenities page.

The residential charges are published with the fee schedule rather than separately.

Hostel chargeMastersPh.D.
Hostel admission, one time₹3,496₹5,162
Hostel rent, each semester₹4,593₹7,654
Electricity, each semester₹5,500₹5,500

A student who does not take a room pays none of those three heads, per the Masters brochure, which is worth checking if you can commute from Chandigarh or Panchkula. Around the halls sit an auditorium, a conference complex, a cafeteria, a gymnasium and health centre, a shopping centre, a community hall and a swimming pool, on the amenities page.

Faculty

The teaching bench has been rebuilt rather than expanded. The institute's NIRF 2026 data submission runs to 68 numbered faculty entries against the 65 recorded in its NIRF 2025 submission a year earlier, but three of the 68 are marked as no longer working at the institute, so the number actually in post has barely moved. What has changed is who they are. Prof. Anupama Mittal joined on 24-12-2024, Prof. Manoj Kumar on 16-01-2025 and Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh on 07-04-2025, among 18 appointments dated between November 2024 and July 2025 in that same filing. Ten of the entries are visiting rather than regular staff.

Seniority is unusually deep on that list. Professors outnumber every other designation, and several have been on this campus for two decades or more, including Prof. Arvind Kumar Bansal since 22-08-2000, Prof. P. V. Bharatam since 18-06-2001 and Prof. Rahul Jain since 23-06-1997, in the NIRF 2026 submission. Prof. Dulal Panda has led the institute since 15-07-2021, in the same filing.

Recognition here attaches to individuals more than to the institution. The awards it lists include the Chemical Research Society of India medal to Dr. Sankar K. Guchhait in 2022 and to Prof. A. K. Chakraborti in 2006, a CRSI bronze medal to Dr. Joydev K. Laha in 2023, and the Thomson Reuters Innovation Award in the government sector to the institute itself in 2011, on its ranking and awards page. Before accepting a seat, ask how many scholars the laboratory you want is already supervising. The institute reported 196 full time doctoral students on the roll in the NIRF 2026 filing, which is close to three per faculty entry before any masters project work is counted.

Notable Alumni

There is no famous alumni page here, and this one will not invent one. What the institute does publish serves a prospective student better anyway: full alumni lists by year of passing, split into Ph.D., masters and M.B.A. streams, on its students and alumni page.

The scale behind those lists is the number that counts. This campus has turned out 3,877 masters graduates, 873 M.B.A. graduates and 440 doctorates since it opened, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure, and the year of passing filter on the alumni page runs back as far as 1992. Pull the list for your discipline and a year that has already graduated, pick two or three names off it, and ask them what their laboratory was actually like.

News & Articles

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri J.P. Nadda visited the campus on 1 May 2026, announced in the institute's press releases. The same page records the AAPS Global Leader Award 2026 going to Prof. Sanyog Jain, head of the Department of Pharmaceutics, on 14 August, and carries a near monthly campus bulletin, Campus Samachar, whose latest issue covers July 2026.

Two teaching announcements are live on the home page and both point outside the degree programmes: a one day symposium on natural products research, artificial intelligence and machine learning on 30 October 2026, and an expression of interest for licensing a phytosome technology developed here from sea buckthorn fruit extract. The institute was also advertising faculty positions in August 2026, on the same page, which is consistent with the hiring visible in its ranking filings.

College Compare

Set this campus beside an ordinary pharmacy college and the comparison collapses, because there is no undergraduate intake here to compare with and no admission route except NIPER JEE. Two other comparisons do decide real choices.

Against its own siblings, Mohali offers the widest choice and the least fellowship coverage. It ran 244 masters seats in the last counselling to Hyderabad's 210, Ahmedabad's 150 and Raebareli's 150, and it was the only institute offering Traditional Medicine, Clinical Research or Pharmaceutical Technology (Biotechnology), in the NIPER JEE 2026 seat matrix for masters programmes. Hyderabad ranked higher in 2025, at 5 with a score of 75.64 against Mohali's 9 and 70.96, in the NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking.

Against its neighbours, the picture changes. Panjab University in Chandigarh, a short drive away, ranked 3 in the same 2025 Pharmacy table with a score of 76.39, and Chandigarh University, listed in Mohali itself, ranked 15 with 68.34, in the NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking. Both admit school leavers: Panjab University filed a sanctioned four year undergraduate intake of 55 and Chandigarh University one of 100 in their own NIRF submissions, at Panjab University and Chandigarh University. NIPER Mohali files no undergraduate row at all, so at 18 those two are the live options here and this campus is a plan for four years later.

Contact & Location

The campus is at Sector 67 in S.A.S. Nagar, and the switchboard routes by extension rather than by department line.

Admission queries are a separate line of enquiry from institute queries, and sending them to the registrar wastes time. NIPER JEE is administered from this campus through its own office and its own portal, and the NIPER JEE 2026 site is where notices, counselling schedules and vacancy sheets appear first.

Verified

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

Neither NAAC nor NBA has assessed this campus, and neither appears anywhere in its published record. The institute answers to Parliament instead. Institute of National Importance status was conferred on it by the NIPER Act of 1998, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure, a category built for bodies that sit outside the university affiliation machinery those two accreditors were designed to police. Membership is the only outside tie it claims, and it claims two of them, listed alongside the founding history on its about page: the Association of Indian Universities at home and the Association of Commonwealth Universities abroad. Neither body inspects a laboratory or grades a programme, so neither fills the space where an accreditation would sit.

One document on this campus matters more to a graduate than any grade. Because M.S. (Pharm.) and M.Tech. (Pharm.) are unusual degree names, recruiters and public service commissions sometimes query them, and the institute publishes both an advisory on NIPERs issued by AICTE and a certificate of equivalence for the NIPER degree on its academic programmes page. Download both before you sit a government recruitment board.

Three laboratory approvals carry weight for anyone planning bench work. The establishment is registered with the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals under registration 108/GO/Re/Rc/Bi/Bt/99/CPCSEA, the National Toxicology Centre is the first government test facility approved by the National GLP Compliance Monitoring Authority of the Department of Science and Technology, and the National Bioavailability Centre is accredited by the World Health Organization, all on the central facilities page. Those approvals are why regulatory grade studies can run in house here instead of being contracted out.

Aid

Scholarships

Money here arrives with the seat or it does not arrive at all, and there is no separate form to fill in. The monthly payment is ₹12,400 for an Indian student holding a with fellowship masters seat, and the single condition attached to it is academic: a CGPA under 6.00 puts it on hold, and anything below 5.50 puts the seat itself under review, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure.

So the column your offer came out of matters more here than the name of the discipline, because the unfunded seat at Mohali is not a curiosity confined to the management degree. It runs through most of the science grid as well, in the NIPER JEE 2026 seat matrix for masters programmes, and two programmes, Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science and Pharmaceutical Management, offer no funded seat at all. The management degree works on merit after entry instead, with the top three of the M.B.A. cohort drawing the same ₹12,400 across the second, third and fourth semesters and the list redrawn on each semester's results, in the same brochure. Doctoral scholars are on a longer leash and a higher bar: four years maximum, renewed each year, a CGPA of 6.50 to hold it and eight hours a week owed back to the institute in teaching or laboratory duty, in the Ph.D. information brochure.

Fee relief through reservation reaches a smaller share of this campus than most people assume. Against 449 postgraduate students on the roll, 68 had their tuition fully reimbursed from state and central government funds and 202 had none of it reimbursed, in its NIRF 2026 data submission. For an SC or ST candidate the nil tuition column does more work than any of that: on the M.B.A. schedule it removes ₹1,11,968 a semester, in section 4.1.2 of the Masters information brochure, and nobody has to apply for it.

Voices

Student Reviews

No star rating for NIPER Mohali comes from anyone who audits what they are averaging. The scores circulating for it are built from a handful of self selected entries, and the institute publishes no testimonials to check them against. One conversation with a student in the department you are considering beats both.

Put three specific things to the department instead, none of which requires anyone's opinion. Which column the seat you are being offered sits in, funded or unfunded. The number of scholars already registered under the supervisor whose laboratory you want. And the completion record of that laboratory's recent intakes, cohort by cohort. Names to send those to are on the alumni lists, filtered by year of passing.
