IISER Bhopal is the one IISER that runs a full engineering wing next to its science departments, and it still admits every one of those BTech students the same way it admits a physicist: through the IISER Aptitude Test, not JEE. Set up in 2008 at Bhauri on the western edge of Bhopal, it is ranked 75th in the NIRF 2025 Overall list and is built around a five-year BS-MS that treats research as the point of the degree rather than a final-year add-on. The clearest sign of what the place is for shows up at graduation, when most of each BS-MS class leaves for a doctorate rather than a job. This page sets out how IAT admission works, what a seat costs on the current fee sheet, what its own filings record about placements and research, and where it actually stands.

Overview

IISER Bhopal is a central-government autonomous institute that holds the status of an Institute of National Importance, the legal footing that lets it frame its own courses and award its own degrees rather than affiliate to a Madhya Pradesh university. It was established in 2008 in Bhauri, in Bhopal district of Madhya Pradesh, one of the network of IISERs the government created to keep undergraduate science and frontline research under one roof.

What separates Bhopal from the older IISERs is breadth of subject. Alongside the natural sciences it runs an Engineering Sciences group and a Humanities and Social Sciences group, so a campus set up to teach basic science now also teaches chemical engineering, data science and electrical engineering and computer science. For a school-leaver deciding between a research career and a professional one, that mix is the institute's distinguishing feature: it is a science-first institute that has chosen not to stop at science.

Courses & Fees

The flagship is the five-year BS-MS dual degree, taken straight after Class 12, which spreads across the sciences early and finishes with a research year for the master's half. Around it Bhopal offers a four-year BS and BTech, a two-year MSc and MTech, an Integrated PhD and a PhD, and it has added an MA in Liberal Arts, so the programme list is wider than a pure-science IISER carries.

On cost, Bhopal publishes its own fee sheet, and for the BS-MS it is a modest central-institute bill rather than a professional-course one. Tuition for the batch entering in 2026 is Rs 44,400 a semester, and that tuition is waived in full for SC and ST students. Registration, amenities and library charges add a fixed user-charge block, hostel and dining charges sit on top for residents, and the first semester also carries one-time admission fees.

Fee head, BS-MS 2026-27Amount
Tuition fee, per semester (2026 entry batch)Rs 44,400
Academic and amenities user charges, per semesterRs 10,900
Hostel and dining charges, per semesterRs 7,500
One-time fees at admission, incl. Rs 5,000 refundable cautionRs 15,000

Two lines on that sheet are worth reading before you budget. Mess and a compulsory medical insurance are billed on top of every figure above, at actuals rather than a fixed rate, and the institute states plainly that the tuition figure can change year to year with its own and government policy. The number that binds is the sheet for your own joining year on the dean's page, not a total quoted second-hand.

Admissions

Getting into any undergraduate seat at Bhopal runs through a single exam. Admission to the BS-MS, the BS and the BTech is managed by the Joint Admissions Committee of the IISERs and made exclusively through the IISER Aptitude Test, the common computer-based paper the institutes conduct together once a year. There is no board-merit channel, no separate engineering-entrance route, and the older KVPY door has closed, so an applicant sits the IAT and is placed by rank through the shared counselling.

The postgraduate and doctoral doors open on different keys. A PhD place turns on a national qualifying result such as GATE or NET followed by a departmental interview, and the Integrated PhD screens on JAM or JEST before the same interview stage. So the exam an applicant prepares for depends on the stage they are entering, but for every school-leaver, whether they want to read physics or build data-science systems, the one paper that matters is the IAT.

Cutoff

There is no standing IISER Bhopal cutoff to aim a preparation at. What fixes a seat is the joint counselling: the IISERs pool their IAT candidates, run the allotment rounds together, and a Bhopal place closes wherever this year's list runs out for the category and the discipline in question, a mark that exists only once the rounds finish and that moves with each cycle's paper and turnout.

Bhopal adds one wrinkle the pure-science IISERs do not. Because it fills both science streams and engineering streams from the same IAT list, its BTech disciplines close at their own ranks, separate from the BS-MS science majors, so a rank that clears one at Bhopal need not clear the other. The figures that actually bind are the closing ranks the counselling authority publishes round by round; a number circulating before results is an estimate, and reading it as a promise is how applicants misjudge where they stand.

Placements

Measuring IISER Bhopal by a campus placement package misses what the BS-MS is built to do, and its own filing shows why. In the 2022-23 batch, 194 of the 239 BS-MS students who graduated went on to higher study while 45 were placed, which is the honest fingerprint of a degree designed to feed doctoral research rather than corporate hiring.

BS-MS batchGraduatedHigher studiesPlacedMedian salary of placed
2021-2223212129Rs 6,50,000
2022-2323919445Rs 19,00,000
2023-241559635Rs 14,50,000

The median salary of the small placed group swings hard from year to year, which is what a handful of offers does to a median, and it is the wrong number to fix a decision on. The steadier signal is the higher-studies column: for a student who wants a research career, the useful outcome is the share of each class that reaches a good PhD programme, and that is where this institute concentrates its result. Anyone whose first goal is a guaranteed job at the end of a professional degree is looking at the wrong kind of campus.

Seat Matrix

Bhopal's undergraduate intake is larger than its research-institute size suggests, because the engineering wing adds seats a pure-science IISER does not carry. Its NIRF 2025 submission records a sanctioned BS-MS intake of 255, a four-year BS and BTech intake of 115, and a two-year postgraduate intake of 60 for 2023-24.

ProgrammeSanctioned intake, 2023-24
BS-MS, 5-year dual degree255
BS and BTech, 4-year115
Postgraduate, 2-year60

Those totals are the sanctioned strength, not the category split a candidate needs. How the seats break down by discipline and by the reserved categories is set fresh in the seat matrix released with each IAT counselling cycle, so the live matrix for the year you apply is the document to read, not a count held over from a past intake.

Rankings

IISER Bhopal appears on exactly one national table, and reading it whole matters more than the headline. It is placed 75th in the NIRF 2025 Overall ranking on a score of 51.99, and, unlike Pune and Kolkata, it does not feature in NIRF's separate research ranking for 2025 at all, so the Overall list is the only place the framework scores it.

NIRF 2025 Overall parameterWeighted score
Teaching, Learning and Resources68.49
Research and Professional Practice33.71
Graduation Outcomes70.10
Outreach and Inclusivity67.04
Perception6.07
Overall score51.99

Broken into its five pillars, that overall score is anything but evenly earned. Graduation Outcomes at 70.10 and Teaching, Learning and Resources at 68.49 carry the profile, while the Perception pillar, drawn from a reputational survey, sits at just 6.07, the weakest of the five by a wide margin and a fair reflection of a campus whose public name is still forming. Research and Professional Practice at 33.71 is the pillar to watch: it is the one that, more than perception, decides whether Bhopal joins its siblings on the research table in a future cycle.

Departments

Bhopal is organised into ten departments across three groups, and the middle group is what marks it out. The natural-science departments are Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Physics; the Engineering Sciences group runs Chemical Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and Economic Sciences sits with Humanities and Social Sciences in the third.

Which of those ten doors a school-leaver walks through counts for far more than the institute's name on the eventual degree, because it is the department and the lab group tied to a subject, not any overall billing, that actually fill the five years. The engineering trio is the practical reason a student weighing a science institute against a technology one might not have to choose here, since Bhopal teaches both under the same roof and the same entrance exam.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus is a purpose-built, largely residential science campus on Bhopal Bypass Road at Bhauri, laid out around departmental laboratories, research facilities and student housing rather than a city-centre plot. That layout is the physical form of the institute's model, which assumes an undergraduate is in a laboratory early and often, so the working day is built for people who live on site rather than commute to lectures.

Because so much of the degree happens in the laboratory, getting a wheelchair user to those benches is not a small thing, and the institute records more than 80 per cent of its buildings reachable by lift or ramp and fitted with specially designed toilets, backed by walking aids and transport laid on between buildings. What each departmental laboratory or central facility actually holds, from the chemistry benches to the newer engineering and data-science setups, keeps changing as the campus builds out, so the institute's own site is where that detail stays current.

Hostel

IISER Bhopal is a residential institute, so on-campus accommodation is the default for a BS-MS student rather than an extra, and the fee sheet reflects it by folding hostel and dining user charges into the semester bill for residents. A student who is at the bench in first year and keeping research hours by the later ones has to be minutes from the lab, not commuting in from Bhopal, which is the practical reason the Bhauri campus is built to be lived on and why student life gathers on its own grounds west of the city.

The charges to plan for are not only the ones printed on the sheet. Mess is billed at actuals on top of the hostel figure, and a compulsory medical insurance is added the same way, so a realistic first-year budget sits above the tuition-and-hostel line the fee page shows. Room allotment is handled by the institute, and the current mess rate is worth confirming with the hostel office rather than assumed.

Faculty

The teaching bench at Bhopal is a working research faculty, and its NIRF 2025 submission enters 166 faculty members across the ten departments. That headline count tells an applicant little on its own, because a research campus is only ever as strong as the particular group you join, and at Bhopal the depth is uneven by design: long-settled physics and chemistry groups sit next to engineering groups the institute is still building out, so the figure worth interrogating is the one standing behind your own subject.

What that faculty is producing is visible in the doctoral numbers, which are climbing quickly. The same filing counts the PhDs it graduated, including Integrated PhDs, rising from 34 in 2021-22 to 67 in 2022-23 and 121 in 2023-24, and its sponsored-research activity moved from 144 projects to 195 across the same window. That is the research base a young institute has to build before a national research ranking will register it, and the trajectory is pointing the right way.

Notable Alumni

There is no established public roll of distinguished graduates to set out for IISER Bhopal, and the reason is arithmetic rather than modesty: the institute took in its first students only after 2008, so its earliest BS-MS cohorts are barely a decade past graduation and most of its alumni are still in doctoral programmes or the early years of a research career. Naming a wall of famous names for a campus this new would mean inventing one, and this institute's record is better read forward, through where its graduating classes go for their PhDs, than backward through a list it has not yet earned. As its alumni reach the senior academic and scientific roles such a list records, it will fill on traceable evidence and not before.

News & Articles

The parts of IISER Bhopal that change through the year are the admission and academic notices: the IAT schedule, the counselling and registration windows, the BS-MS, BS and BTech admission notifications, and the PhD interview calls all go up on the official website as the cycle runs. A dated notice, a counselling window or an interview call is only reliable at that source; carried second-hand, it is often a cycle behind by the time it is read. Underneath the notices runs the record that outlasts them, the research the ten departments publish, and it is on that, not on any single admission cycle, that a place like Bhopal is finally weighed.

College Compare

Within the IISER family the honest comparison is easy to read off one table. The four IISERs that appear on the NIRF 2025 Overall list run from Pune at 55, through Kolkata at 67 and Mohali at 70, down to Bhopal at 75, so Bhopal is the youngest-looking of the group on the pooled numbers. But a single rank buries the thing that makes it different, which is the engineering wing: a student who wants both a basic-science option and an engineering one, decided by the same IAT rank, gets a choice at Bhopal that the pure-science campuses do not offer.

Against an IIT the comparison settles less than students expect, because the two are built for different destinations. An IIT is engineering-first around the BTech and its placement machine, while Bhopal is science-first around the BS-MS and a research path, even where it teaches engineering. Someone holding both a JEE and an IAT result should choose by the career they actually want, not by relative prestige, and a candidate weighing Bhopal against another IISER should line up the exact department and research group they would join rather than read a pooled rank in isolation.

Contact & Location

IISER Bhopal sits at Bhauri, on the Bhopal Bypass Road to the west of the city, on a self-contained campus rather than an inner-city site. The official website is the right starting point for anything that moves during the year, carrying the full postal address, the departmental directory and the admission portal that links out to the IAT site.
