Chandigarh University

#14

Chandigarh University is a private state university at Gharuan, on the western edge of Mohali, that the government's National Institutional Ranking Framework placed 19th among all Indian universities in its 2025 tables. It was established in 2012 under an Act of the Punjab legislature.

The name causes real confusion, so fix it first. This is not Panjab University, the far older public university inside Chandigarh city, and it is not one of the government colleges the Chandigarh administration runs; it is also separate from the Chandigarh University campus that operates in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, on its own website. What follows is about the Gharuan campus: how its CUCET admission works, what a seat costs once scholarship is applied, the placement numbers the university reports, and where each faculty stands in NIRF.

Overview

Chandigarh University runs as a single self-financed campus rather than a network of affiliated colleges, with its teaching split across a set of University Institutes that each own a discipline. It holds an A+ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, and in NIRF 2025 it is placed as a university and, separately, in engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture and research, so it is measured on more than one axis.

Two facts shape everything else. First, it is a private university, so it admits through its own entrance test and sets its own fees rather than drawing from a state counselling pool. Second, its campus sits in Gharuan in S.A.S. Nagar district, on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway, not inside Chandigarh itself, which is where most of the mix-ups with the city's older institutions start.

Because the Chandigarh University name is also carried by a newer campus in Uttar Pradesh, any fee, cutoff or placement figure you come across should be checked against the Punjab campus specifically before you rely on it.

Courses & Fees

The university teaches across engineering, computing, business and management, pharmacy, architecture, law, liberal arts, sciences, allied health, design, media and hospitality, organised into University Institutes rather than standalone colleges. The programmes that pull the largest applicant pools are its four-year B.E./B.Tech degrees, the MBA, and the professional courses in pharmacy, architecture and law.

Integrated law (BA/BBA LLB)UndergraduateCUCET

Fees are set per programme and revised each year, so the binding figure is the per-semester tuition on the university's official course-fee page for your specific course. A fee lifted from an aggregator page can be a year out of date, or quoted for a different specialisation entirely, so the number that binds is the one printed against your exact course on cuchd.in.

What materially changes the bill is CUCET, because the test doubles as a scholarship award. The university offers up to a 100% scholarship on the basis of CUCET merit, so two students sitting in the same B.Tech class can pay very different net fees depending on their test score. Budget from the post-scholarship figure your own CUCET result earns, not the sticker tuition alone.

Admissions

Admission to Chandigarh University runs through CUCET, the Chandigarh University Common Entrance Test, and not through any single national exam. CUCET is the university's own eligibility-and-scholarship test: clearing it establishes that you are eligible for a programme and, at the same time, fixes the scholarship you qualify for, which is why the university calls it a scholarship-cum-entrance test.

Base eligibility still rests on your class 12 marks in the relevant subjects, or your graduation result for a postgraduate course, so CUCET sits on top of the board result rather than replacing it. Because this is a private university running its own process, there is no JoSAA-style common counselling and no single national score that on its own books a seat here.

On the common question of direct admission, there is no route that skips the test. CUCET is offered in multiple phases and slots through the year, so a candidate who misses one window can sit a later one, but the seat and any scholarship still come off the CUCET result.

Cutoff

Chandigarh University does not publish a rank-based cutoff of the kind a JoSAA or state-CET seat carries, because it does not admit from a central merit list. The gating number here is your CUCET score, and it behaves as a scholarship threshold rather than an admission rank: a higher CUCET mark earns a larger scholarship, up to 100%, while the qualifying marks for the programme set the eligibility floor.

So the honest cutoff to plan around is the CUCET score band that unlocks the scholarship tier you need, together with the class 12 percentage the programme requires. Both are published on the university's admission pages and can shift between CUCET phases.

Placements

Chandigarh University runs a large central placement drive, and the figures it publishes are its own reported numbers rather than an independently audited report. For the 2024-25 batch its placement cell reports a highest domestic package of 59.9 LPA and a top international offer of 1.7 crore. It also reports more than 10,000 placement offers from over 1,300 recruiting companies for the same batch.

Read those as headline numbers, not typical ones. A highest package is a single standout offer, and the university does not publish an average or a median beside it, so the figure that matters most for a student, the salary a mid-cohort graduate can actually expect, is not disclosed. What the volume of offers does signal is breadth of recruiter access, not a promised outcome for any one candidate.

Seat Matrix

Chandigarh University does not publish a single consolidated seat matrix; intake sits inside each University Institute and each programme, sanctioned under the relevant regulator, such as AICTE for its engineering and management courses and the Pharmacy Council of India for pharmacy. For the exact sanctioned intake of a specific branch in the current cycle, the reliable source is that programme's own admission page on cuchd.in, updated each admission season.

Rankings

Chandigarh University is assessed by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, the Ministry of Education's system, and its 2025 profile is unusually broad for a university barely a decade old. In NIRF 2025 it is ranked 19th among universities, 15th in pharmacy, 14th in architecture, 31st in engineering, 32nd in management and 34th in research, with an all-disciplines overall rank of 32.

The shape of that profile is the useful part. Its strongest single results are in pharmacy and architecture, both inside the national top 15, which sit a step above its engineering and management standings. Its overall and university ranks, 32 and 19, mark it as a genuine multi-faculty performer rather than a one-department institution, while the research rank of 34 flags research as the part of the profile still catching up to its teaching and outcomes.

Departments

Rather than affiliated colleges, Chandigarh University is built from University Institutes, each running its own programmes and faculty. The institutes listed by the university span the professional and the liberal disciplines:

  • University Institute of Engineering and University Institute of Computing
  • University School of Business
  • University Institute of Pharma Sciences
  • University Institute of Architecture and University Institute of Design
  • University Institute of Legal Studies
  • University Institute of Liberal Arts and Humanities, and University Institute of Sciences
  • University Institute of Allied Health Sciences, Media Studies, Film and Visual Arts, and Tourism and Hospitality Management

This institute structure is why the university is ranked in engineering, management, pharmacy and architecture separately in NIRF: each is a substantial faculty in its own right, not a department tucked inside one college.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus is a single residential site at Gharuan, off the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway in S.A.S. Nagar district, so lecture blocks, laboratories, hostels and sports grounds sit together rather than being scattered across a city. For a candidate, the practical consequence is that one visit shows the institutes, the library and the hostels in a single trip, and that most students live on or beside the campus rather than commuting in from Chandigarh.

The university does not publish a single audited facilities inventory that an outside page can reproduce faithfully, so for the current state of a specific facility, a named laboratory, the sports complex or a particular hostel block, its own campus pages are the reliable source.

Hostel

Chandigarh University is a residential campus with on-campus hostels, and for most out-of-state students the hostel and mess charge is a genuine second line in the budget on top of tuition. The university sets these charges itself and revises them by block and room type, and it does not publish one flat hostel figure, so the binding number is the one on its official hostel and fee pages for the room category you choose. Confirm it for your programme before you plan the year's cost.

Faculty

Teaching at Chandigarh University is spread across its University Institutes, with each institute carrying its own staff in engineering, pharmacy, management, law, architecture and the sciences. There is no single university-wide faculty count on cuchd.in that can be quoted with confidence; the roster and the student-teacher ratio for a specific programme live on that institute's own pages. NIRF folds this input into its teaching-and-resources score, one component of the ranks above rather than a standalone faculty figure.

Notable Alumni

The university was established in 2012, so its graduates are still early in their careers, working mostly across engineering, business, pharmacy and allied-health roles rather than long-established public life. A verified, independently documented roll of distinguished alumni is not yet available to list here, and naming people is only honest when the record is traceable, so this section stays empty rather than carrying names that cannot be checked.

News & Articles

Chandigarh University posts its admission notices, CUCET phase dates and result updates on cuchd.in and the CUCET portal rather than into one syndicated feed, and those official pages are where a time-sensitive item, such as a shifted CUCET window or a fee revision, surfaces first. For anything dated, open the official page ahead of a third-party digest.

College Compare

Set against other large private universities in north India, such as Thapar, Lovely Professional University or Amity, Chandigarh University's distinguishing marks are its NIRF top-15 finishes in pharmacy and architecture and its CUCET-linked scholarship, which can move the net fee substantially. On the common CU-or-Amity question, there is no blanket answer: the honest comparison lines up three things for the exact programme you want, its NIRF standing in that discipline, the per-year fee after any scholarship you would realistically earn, and the campus and city you would actually live in. Compare the discipline, not the overall name.
