Indian Institute Of Management Tiruchirapalli

Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu Est. 2011 Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#16

A general-category candidate has to clear the 95.25 CAT percentile before IIM Tiruchirappalli will call them for an interview, and the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management that seat leads to costs Rs 19.5 lakh for the 2026-28 batch. IIM Trichy is the eleventh Indian Institute of Management, set up in 2011, and it sits at rank 16 on the NIRF 2025 management list. What follows is the fee in full, the percentile floor for every category, how the institute weighs the CAT score against the interview and your record, and what its recent graduates were actually paid, all of it pulled from the institute's filings and the NIRF tables.

Overview

IIM Tiruchirappalli was instituted on 4 January 2011 as the eleventh IIM, and the Indian Institutes of Management Act of 2017 later made it an institution of national importance able to award its own degrees. It teaches from a 175-acre campus on the Pudukkottai road at Chinna Sooriyur, on the southern edge of Tiruchirappalli, the old temple town on the Kaveri in central Tamil Nadu. The permanent site cost Rs 584 crore and lies about 11 km from the city airport, and a second campus in Chennai, opened in 2012, carries the institute's executive teaching closer to the corporate base there.

What separates IIM Trichy from a school built around a single MBA is the spread of routes it now runs off one faculty. Alongside the flagship two-year PGPM it offers a Post Graduate Programme in Management in Human Resources, a part-time Post Graduate Programme in Business Management for working executives at the Chennai campus, and a doctoral Fellow Programme, all listed on the institute's own site. All three of its MBA-level programmes hold AMBA accreditation, the UK-based mark carried by a limited set of Indian schools, and the institute separately holds an institutional membership of AACSB, the US-based business-school body, which is a membership rather than an accreditation.

Courses & Fees

The programme a general applicant chases is the two-year, full-time PGPM, and its binding cost is a single published figure rather than a fee that shifts with the elective load. For the 2026-28 batch the total programme cost is Rs 19.5 lakh, and that figure sits before the refundable caution deposit and the mess advance, which are billed on top.

ProgrammeModeEntranceFee
PGPM (MBA)Two-year, full-timeCATRs 19.5 lakh (2026-28)
PGPM-HRTwo-year, full-timeCATPublished per cycle
PGPBMPart-time, working executives, ChennaiOwn admission processPublished per cycle
Fellow Programme (FPM)Doctoral, residentialOwn admission processPublished per cycle

The PGPM is recognised by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to a master's degree, which is the point that lets its graduates apply for doctoral study and public posts that ask for a postgraduate qualification. The Human Resources variant, added in 2020, runs the same two years and the same CAT gate but builds its second year around people-management electives. The PGPBM is the outlier: it is a weekend programme for managers who keep their jobs, taught at Chennai rather than Trichy, and it does not go through CAT. Fees for the HR, executive and doctoral programmes are issued on their own admission pages each cycle rather than as one headline number, so a candidate for any of them should read the figure against the batch they are applying to.

Admissions

The PGPM takes candidates only through the Common Admission Test, and from there the choosing is entirely IIM Trichy's own work in two moves: a percentile gate that decides who gets called, and then a composite in which the CAT score is worth just over half. A bachelor's degree and a valid CAT score make a candidate eligible, and the admission criteria spell out those two moves, the shortlist for the written ability test and personal interview off CAT percentiles, then the final merit list off the weighted composite.

That composite is where IIM Trichy is unusually transparent, because it publishes the exact weight each factor carries.

Selection factorWeight
CAT percentile52%
Personal interview20%
Work experience10%
Gender diversity (female candidates)6%
Undergraduate performance5%
Class 12 score3%
Class 10 score2%
Academic diversity (non-engineering)2%

Read that table the way the admissions office does and two things stand out. The CAT score, at 52%, decides just over half the outcome, so a high percentile opens the door but leaves the other 48% to be won at interview and on record. And the work-experience credit is capped: the criteria award the full 10 points at 24 to 29 months of full-time work and nothing at all beyond 48 months, so a long stint before an MBA counts for less here than the mid-length one the institute is really looking for. Reservation across categories follows Government of India norms.

Cutoff

Unlike some of the newer IIMs, IIM Trichy publishes a firm percentile floor rather than leaving the bar unstated, and clearing it is what earns a call for the written test and interview. The floor is a gate on every section at once: a candidate has to be above the sectional cut in verbal, data interpretation and quantitative ability and above the overall cut, with no way to trade a strong section against a weak one.

CategoryVARCDILRQAOverall
General75757595.25

NC-OBC60606088.50
SC45454575.00
ST25252544.00
DAP (PwD)25252530.00

The gap between the general and reserved floors is wide, from a 95.25 overall for general candidates down to a 44.00 for the ST category, and the sectional cut is what catches people out. A general applicant sitting above the 95.25 overall floor is still dropped if any one section falls below the 75 sectional cut, so section balance matters as much at shortlisting as the headline percentile. The floor only shortlists; the final call is the composite in the admissions table above.

Placements

IIM Trichy's audited outcome number is the median salary it files with NIRF. For the batch that finished in 2023-24 the institute placed 383 of 386 students who completed the programme on time, at a median of Rs 18,10,000, and because that covers the whole placed class rather than one headline offer it is the figure to plan around. The two batches before it came in close by, so the median has held its band rather than climbed.

Graduating batchCompleted on timePlacedMedian salary
2023-24386383Rs 18,10,000
2022-23268268Rs 18,60,000
2021-22259257Rs 16,00,000

The institute's own final-placement material fills in the rest of the picture for the more recent cohort. It puts the average package for the previous year at 19.27 LPA across more than 189 recruiting companies. The sector split is the detail that marks Trichy out from the consulting-led older IIMs: technology and analytics roles took 40% of offers, operations 23%, banking and financial services and marketing 10% each, and consulting 7%. A candidate weighing an offer here should read that mix as much as the salary, because it says where the degree actually leads.

Seat Matrix

IIM Trichy reports its intake through its NIRF filing rather than a public counselling table, because it admits students directly and not through a common seat-allocation round. Its sanctioned strength for the two-year postgraduate programme was 410 seats in 2023-24, a shade below the 414 of the year before.

MeasureValue
Sanctioned PG intake (2023-24)410
Total students enrolled, all years806
Male / female472 / 334
From within Tamil Nadu / outside the state75 / 731

The number in that table worth pausing on is the home-state split: 731 of 806 enrolled students come from outside Tamil Nadu, so an IIM sitting in a Tamil temple town fills the large majority of its classroom from the rest of the country rather than its own state. Category reservation applies under the same central norms as at every IIM, with the exact split set in each year's admission policy.

Rankings

IIM Trichy sits 16th among management schools on the 2025 NIRF list, its overall score 64.95 out of 100. The parameter breakdown is what makes the position legible, because it shows a young institute that is strong where it can act and weaker where only time helps.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Overall64.95
Teaching, learning and resources78.93
Research and professional practice35.02
Graduation outcomes87.90
Outreach and inclusivity75.08
Perception56.74

The revealing figure is perception at 56.74, which for an institute only in its second decade is high, higher than several older management schools score, and it says the market already reads a Trichy degree as a genuine IIM credential. The drag on the total is not reputation but research: at 35.02 the research and professional-practice score is the lowest of the five, the parameter a young faculty builds slowly through published work and funded projects. Graduation outcomes at 87.90, tracking the near-full placement record, are what hold the overall score up.

Departments

Teaching and research at IIM Trichy are organised into eight academic areas rather than named departments: Economics and Public Policy; Finance and Accounting; General Management; Information Systems and Analytics; Marketing; Operations Management and Decision Sciences; Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management; and Strategy and Entrepreneurship. The same eight groups carry the PGPM electives, the HR programme's specialisation and the Fellow Programme's doctoral supervision, so the list doubles as a map of where the school is deep. An applicant weighing an elective track, or a doctoral candidate hunting for a supervisor, can read the strength of a single area before committing to it.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Everything IIM Trichy teaches happens on one 175-acre site at Chinna Sooriyur off the Pudukkottai road, a fully residential campus that puts the academic blocks, the central library, the student hostels and the faculty housing inside a single boundary. The permanent campus also carries a set of Executive Residences used by the management-development and executive programmes that bring working managers onto the grounds for short stays. On accessibility, the institute's NIRF filing records lifts or ramps in more than 80% of its buildings, along with wheelchair provision and specially designed toilets for students with disabilities.

Hostel

Every student admitted to the PGPM is housed on campus at Chinna Sooriyur for the full two years, since the course is run as a residential programme with no day-scholar option. That shapes the budget, because the published programme cost of Rs 19.5 lakh is quoted before the mess advance and the refundable caution deposit, so the mess charge is the running cost a candidate has to add to the headline fee to reach the real two-year total.

Faculty

The teaching body is almost entirely doctorate-holding. IIM Trichy's NIRF 2025 filing lists 58 faculty records across the eight academic areas, the large majority of them regular appointments holding a PhD, with a smaller set of adhoc and contractual roles. The institute is led by its director, Pawan Kumar Singh, himself a doctorate-holding faculty member on that roster.

Faculty and researchCount
Faculty records in the NIRF filing58
Full-time doctoral scholars11
Part-time doctoral scholars31

Behind the teaching sits a doctoral community of 11 full-time and 31 part-time research scholars in the Fellow Programme. That group is the pipeline for the published work behind the research and professional-practice score, the single NIRF parameter where IIM Trichy still trails, so its growth is what the institute's ranking rests on next.

Notable Alumni

The first PGPM class enrolled in 2011, which puts the oldest cohort of graduates only about fourteen years into working life, so IIM Trichy's alumni sit mostly at manager and senior-manager level rather than in the chief-executive chairs a much older institute can point to. IIM Trichy publishes no verified register of distinguished alumni, and Expertie does not print names it cannot tie to a traceable public record, so none appear here. What genuinely exists is an alumni association that links graduates across Indian cities and abroad, and that network, still filling out as the early batches climb, is the honest picture of the community a new student would be joining.

News & Articles

IIM Trichy does not run a news desk; its public calendar moves with the CAT cycle, and the official site is where each year's shortlist notifications, NIRF submissions and placement material are posted, so that is the place to confirm a current-year date. The steadier stream of activity is executive teaching: the institute's NIRF filing records 44 management development programmes in 2023-24, drawing 1,932 participants, run across the Trichy and Chennai campuses through the year.

College Compare

What actually separates IIM Trichy from its peer IIMs is its programme range, not its rank. Few of the newer IIMs run both a dedicated HR MBA and a weekend PGPBM for working executives out of a second campus in a bigger city, and that Chennai executive base is the real reason to pick Trichy for a candidate who wants an IIM credential without quitting a job. Set against the older IIMs, the ranking parameters are candid: the graduation outcomes are comparable, the research score is lower, and the perception score has already closed most of the distance. The sensible way to choose between two calls is on each school's published fee and placement filing for the exact programme you want, since a single ranking line hides all of that.
