Indian Institute Of Foreign Trade, Delhi

New Delhi, Delhi Est. 1963 Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#17

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade is the one central business school India built specifically to train managers for the country's foreign trade. It was set up in 1963 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and its flagship is the MBA in International Business rather than a general management degree, per the institute's own 2026-28 MBA admission brochure. One change matters more than any other for a current applicant, and most third-party pages still miss it. IIFT no longer runs its own written entrance test, and now shortlists candidates on their CAT score. What follows is the real cost of the Delhi programme, the mechanics of that CAT-to-interview selection, and the packages the class of 2025 actually took home.

Overview

IIFT holds Deemed to be University status, which it was granted in 2002, so the qualification a student earns is a university MBA degree rather than an autonomous institute's diploma. It sits inside the Ministry of Commerce and Industry rather than the education ministry that oversees the IIMs, and that lineage shows in everything from its curriculum to the trade-policy research it houses. The institute carries AACSB accreditation, an A+ NAAC grade and a 17th NIRF rank, the combination it leads with on its own admission material.

The Delhi campus at B-21, Qutab Institutional Area is the founding site and the largest, but IIFT is not a single-campus school. It runs four operational campuses in India, at Delhi, Kolkata, Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh and GIFT City in Gujarat, and a candidate applies once and is considered for a seat across them. The programme slate reaches beyond the flagship into an MBA in Business Analytics, an MA in Economics with a trade and finance focus, executive and online MBA formats, and doctoral study, but the two-year full-time MBA in International Business remains the course the institute is built around.

Courses & Fees

The number that binds a general-category student is the total programme fee IIFT publishes per campus, and for the flagship MBA in International Business it differs between the older Delhi and Kolkata sites and the newer Kakinada and GIFT City ones. The brochure for the 2025-27 batch sets the Delhi total fee at Rs 21.82 lacs, and that figure already folds in boarding and lodging rather than charging them on top.

MBA (IB) campusTotal fee, 2025-27Refundable security
DelhiRs 21.82 lacsRs 10,000
KolkataRs 21.32 lacsRs 10,000
Kakinada (excl. boarding and lodging)Rs 19.68 lacsRs 10,000
GIFT City (excl. boarding and lodging)Rs 19.68 lacsRs 10,000

The Delhi and Kolkata totals cover tuition, boarding and lodging, and charges for the library, computing and internet, medical insurance and the alumni and student bodies, which is why they sit above the Kakinada and GIFT City figures that exclude residence. Students from the SC, ST and PWD categories receive a 50% concession on the tuition component only, per the same brochure. IIFT also runs a Merit-cum-Means scholarship that returns 20% of the tuition fee to 10% of admitted students across its full-time programmes, disbursed each trimester, and open to those whose family income is below Rs 8.00 lakh a year under the brochure's scholarship terms.

Admissions

Admission to the full-time MBA in International Business now runs entirely through CAT, and this is the single fact most third-party pages still get wrong. IIFT retired its own separate written entrance test, and it now shortlists candidates on their CAT score together with other defined parameters, as stated in the admission brochure. A student registers with IIFT directly and enters a valid CAT result, and there is no IIFT-specific written paper to sit any more.

IIFT asks for a recognised bachelor's degree of three years or more in any subject, carrying at least 50% marks, and it drops that bar to 45% for candidates in the SC, ST and PWD categories. Students in their final year may apply while their results are still pending. Shortlisted candidates are called for a second round of Group Discussion and Personal Interview, held in physical mode across ten cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai, so a candidate is not tied to travelling to a campus for the interview. Applying is itself charged: the brochure sets a MBA (IB) application fee of Rs 3,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and Rs 1,500 for SC, ST, PwD and transgender applicants, with the MBA in Business Analytics priced lower at Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000.

Cutoff

IIFT sets no published CAT percentile as a guaranteed gateway to the MBA in International Business, which is why the percentile targets traded on coaching forums are guesses and not an IIFT figure. Two features specific to IIFT make a fixed line impossible. A single application is pooled across the Delhi, Kolkata, GIFT City and Kakinada campuses, and the CAT score only carries a candidate as far as the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round, where the seat is actually decided. A candidate is better served preparing for that interview than chasing a percentile number, and checking each cycle's real shortlist against the official admission brochure instead of a predicted cutoff.

Placements

The MBA (IB) batch of 2023-25 was placed by 135 recruiters, and IIFT's final placement highlights put the average package at 31.30 LPA and the highest offer at a 1.23 Cr international package. The institute's placement page adds a median package of 26 LPA and a highest domestic package of 72 LPA for the same batch, along with 45 new corporate associations and 7 international offers.

Summer internships, the leading indicator of the next final season for a two-year programme, drew 105 or more recruiters for the 2024-26 cohort, per the same placement page. The highest international summer stipend reached 6.0 lakh and more than 50 positions came in at a stipend of 4 lakh or above, a spread that reflects how much of IIFT's recruiting sits in trade, banking and consulting roles that pay premium internship rates.

Seat Matrix

Unlike many private schools, IIFT states its sanctioned intake openly, and the flagship MBA in International Business is its largest programme by seats. The 2026-28 brochure fixes 240 seats at each of the Delhi and Kolkata campuses and 120 at each of the GIFT City and Kakinada campuses, and a single application puts a candidate in the running across all four.

MBA (IB) campusSanctioned seats
Delhi240
Kolkata240
GIFT City120
Kakinada120

Seats within each campus are reserved following Government of India norms across the SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PwD categories, and the campus a selected candidate is allotted depends on merit and preference within that reservation structure rather than a separate application to each site.

Rankings

IIFT's clearest outside marker is its place on the NIRF management table, where it ranked 17th in 2025 with an overall score of 62.93. Reading the parameter breakdown is more useful than the rank alone, because it shows a school strong on teaching resources and graduation outcomes but held back on the research and perception measures that reward older, larger institutes.

NIRF 2025 Management parameterIIFT score
Overall62.93
Teaching, Learning and Resources82.24
Research and Professional Practice32.57
Graduation Outcomes87.51
Outreach and Inclusivity67.20
Perception42.71

The Research and Professional Practice score of 32.57 is the real weight on the total, which fits a school whose scale is small and whose research output is concentrated in trade and economics rather than spread across a full management faculty. Set against that, the Graduation Outcomes score of 87.51 tracks the strong placement record, and the AACSB accreditation IIFT carries is an external quality mark that the NIRF rank does not capture on its own.

Departments

IIFT organises its teaching around the disciplines of an international business school, spanning international marketing, trade and finance, economics, quantitative techniques and operations, organisational behaviour and business law, rather than a wide set of unrelated schools. What sets its academic base apart from a general B-school is the trade-policy research attached to it, the kind of analysis its faculty publish as economics and trade working papers, and that focus feeds directly back into the MBA (IB) curriculum. For the current list of academic areas and centres, the academics section of the institute's official site is the authoritative record.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The Delhi campus in the Qutab Institutional Area is built as a compact, fully residential site rather than a sprawling one. IIFT's admission brochure describes two academic blocks and two residential blocks for students and visiting faculty on the main campus, with a further student residence created a short walk away, alongside centrally air-conditioned lecture halls, syndicate rooms, an auditorium and an open-air theatre. The grounds also hold water bodies and greenery that the institute keeps for its ecological setting, an unusual feature for a campus this central in south Delhi.

Hostel

Residence is part of the flagship programme rather than an optional add-on, and for the Delhi and Kolkata campuses the boarding and lodging charge is already inside the published total fee. That is the reason the Delhi figure of Rs 21.82 lacs sits above the Kakinada and GIFT City totals, where residence is billed separately and excluded from the headline number, per the fee schedule. A student weighing campuses should read the Delhi and Kolkata fees as all-in for accommodation and the two newer campuses as course-fee-only, and confirm the current residence charge for those two at source before budgeting.

Faculty

IIFT's teaching is delivered by full-time faculty grouped by discipline, and the profile leans towards economists and trade specialists more than a general management school's would, which is consistent with the institute's mandate and its research output. A prospective MBA (IB) or doctoral candidate checking whether a specific area, say international finance or trade law, has the depth they want should read the faculty directory on the institute's official site, since that roster with each professor's research area is the reliable source rather than any aggregated third-party list.

Notable Alumni

IIFT's official pages carry no individually verified roster of notable alumni, and this page will not manufacture one from unsourced lists. What the placement record does establish is the terrain its graduates move into, from international trade and banking to consulting and the export-import desks of large corporates, which are the roles the MBA (IB) was built to supply. The institute maintains an alumni network across its four campuses, and that office is the reliable place to confirm where a specific graduate went.

News & Articles

For an applicant, the news that carries weight is the admission cycle itself. Admission to the 2026-28 MBA (IB) and MBA (BA) batches is being run on the CAT 2025 score followed by the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round, as the current brochure sets out, and IIFT has also announced an overseas Dubai campus alongside its four Indian sites. For an exact deadline in any given cycle, the notices IIFT puts on its own admission portal are the record to trust ahead of any secondary calendar.

College Compare

IIFT is easy to misplace because it is admitted through CAT yet is not an IIM, and it is a specialist rather than a generalist. Against the IIMs it competes on the same entrance test but offers a narrower, trade-focused MBA and a government lineage under the Ministry of Commerce; against a private school like MDI Gurgaon it awards a university degree rather than a diploma. The fair way to weigh it is on what a candidate actually values, its international-business focus, its Delhi campus fee and its placement record set against each rival's published figures, rather than reading a single NIRF rank as the whole comparison.
