Yenepoya Dental College sits on University Road at Deralakatte in Mangaluru, and it is a constituent college of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), which awards its BDS and MDS degrees. Its 100 BDS seats are split by the Medical Counselling Committee into three separate queues, and 30 of them are reserved for Muslim minority candidates, a quota neither of the other two NIRF-ranked dental colleges in the city has. NIRF placed it 31st among dental institutions in 2025.
Overview
The college opened on 14th August 1992 in a building on Bibi Alabi Road in central Mangalore, and its history page traces the moves from there: a hospital and new college campus in 1997, construction at Deralakatte from 1999, and the present college building at Deralakatte in 2000. The UGC's consolidated list of deemed universities includes Yenepoya, Mangalore under Karnataka, and the university's own admission papers describe it as recognised under Section 3(A) of the UGC Act.
The admission papers settle the legal relationship. Both the BDS admission notification for 2026-27 and the MDS notification describe Yenepoya Dental College, Mangaluru as a "constituent college" of the deemed university. The homepage still tells search engines otherwise: the description behind the college homepage says the college was established in 1999 and affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, a line that matches neither the 1992 opening on the history page, where 1999 is only the year construction began at Deralakatte, nor the constituent-college wording of both current admission papers.

The Yenepoya name covers far more than this college. The same deemed university runs Yenepoya Medical College on the Deralakatte campus, which MCC lists separately under code 200351 in the round-one matrix, and the dental college's own site menu, visible on its history page, also links nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, ayurveda, homoeopathy and arts and science colleges and a Bengaluru campus. The university's NAAC grade, its central library and its hostels belong to that wider body, and they are marked as such below.
The principal is Dr Laxmikanth Chatra, per the principal's message, and the dean is Dr Sham S Bhat, whose message describes being with the college almost from its start.
Courses & Fees
Beyond the BDS, taught over four years plus a one-year internship per the BDS page, the college teaches the MDS in all nine dental specialities, a PhD in dental sciences and a diploma course for dental mechanics, as the principal's message lists them.
BDS Tuition
The university fixes the whole BDS bill at admission, and its 2026-27 notification states that the fee "shall remain unchanged for the entire program duration".
| BDS instalment | Due | General seat | NRI seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | At admission | Rs 5,28,000 | Rs 6,28,000 or $6,975 |
| Second | 01.08.2027 | Rs 5,02,000 | Rs 6,02,000 or $6,670 |
| Third | 01.08.2028 | Rs 5,02,000 | Rs 6,02,000 or $6,670 |
| Fourth | 01.08.2029 | Rs 5,02,000 | Rs 6,02,000 or $6,670 |
| Total | Rs 20,34,000 | Rs 24,34,000 or $26,985 |
A Muslim minority seat costs the same as a general one. The notification uses a single undertaking for "BDS Management Seats/Muslim Minority Seats", carrying the same Rs 5,28,000 first instalment, so the quota changes who can compete, not what they pay. The internship year has no tuition line, and the same undertaking fixes the intern stipend at Rs 5,500 and bars any claim beyond it; if a regulator later orders a higher stipend, the parent pays the difference as extra fees.
MDS Tuition
MDS fees fall into six price bands, from Rs 15,00,000 a year in conservative dentistry and orthodontics down to Rs 1,00,000 in oral pathology, per the MDS notification.
| MDS speciality | General merit, per year | NRI, per year |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics | Rs 15,00,000 | Rs 18,00,000 or $20,000 |
| Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics | Rs 15,00,000 | Rs 18,00,000 or $20,000 |
| Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | Rs 12,00,000 | Rs 15,00,000 or $17,000 |
| Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry | Rs 11,00,000 | No NRI seat |
| Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge | Rs 11,00,000 | No NRI seat |
| Periodontology | Rs 8,00,000 | No NRI seat |
| Oral Medicine and Radiology | Rs 2,50,000 | No NRI seat |
| Public Health Dentistry | Rs 2,50,000 | No NRI seat |
| Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology | Rs 1,00,000 | No NRI seat |
The fee table leaves out two things a resident will feel. Periodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery residents pay an implantology course fee of Rs 1,75,000 on top, general and NRI alike. The stipend comes on two schedules in the same document: the fee table's stipend line of Rs 96,000 a year lines up with the Rs 8,000 figure in the separate oral pathology undertaking, while the undertaking used for every other subject gives Rs 14,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 16,000 across the three years. Ask the postgraduate office which schedule applies to your seat before signing.
Hostel Charges
Hostel is compulsory for every BDS student, and meals are billed as "food and establishment charges" beside the room, with both lines climbing each year. The BDS notification lists three room types.
| BDS room | Year one | Year four | Air conditioning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three sharing | Rs 1,80,000 | Rs 2,08,350 | Rs 1,400 per head per month extra |
| Four sharing | Rs 1,50,000 | Rs 1,73,550 | Rs 1,000 per head per month extra |
| Six sharing | Rs 1,20,000 | Rs 1,38,900 | Not offered |
MDS residents are not told hostel is mandatory, but the MDS notification adds a two-sharing room at Rs 2,40,000 in year one, with air conditioning at Rs 2,000 per head per month, and says family accommodation is available on request.
Admissions
MCC is the only route into either degree, and Karnataka's KEA counselling lists no Yenepoya dental seat. The BDS notification tells NEET-UG candidates seeking "Management, Muslim Minority or NRI categories" to register on mcc.nic.in, and the MDS notification says the same for NEET candidates for MDS. The college appears in neither KEA's 2026 BDS seat matrix nor its 2026 MDS matrix.
The Muslim Minority Queue
MCC's NEET-UG 2026 bulletin says Muslim minority and NRI seats at deemed universities still vacant in round 3 are converted to self-financed merit seats, once every eligible candidate in that quota has been exhausted. The MDS bulletin warns candidates to verify their own eligibility before applying under a Muslim minority quota, and bars anyone claiming an NRI seat from claiming minority status as well.
Proof of community is the gap in Yenepoya's own paperwork. The university's BDS document list is headed "General Category / Muslim Minority Category" and asks for the same papers for both, from NEET admit card to domicile certificate, without naming any proof of religious minority status, per the notification. Ask the admission office, on 6364328464 for BDS document verification, what it will accept before you lock that choice.
Money at Reporting
The college's bank details are built around the candidate's rank: BDS fees go to a virtual account made by adding the All India Rank to the prefix YDC724U, and NRI fees go in US dollars only to a separate account, per the BDS notification. Leaving after counselling ends costs the entire course fee, and Rs 10,000 is deducted even when MCC re-allocates the seat in round 2.
The undertaking also goes on Rs 200 stamp paper and must be notarised, and undergraduates, interns included, may not bring any vehicle onto the campus under the general guidelines at the end of the same notification.
Cutoff
Neither the college's admission pages nor the two Yenepoya notifications list a closing rank, so the figures below come from MCC's own allotment files.
BDS Round One, 2026
Every Muslim minority and self-financed merit place at the college was filled in MCC's first round, but only two of the 15 NRI seats found a taker, reading the round-one matrix against the round-one result.
Those empty NRI chairs matter to open-merit candidates too, because of the round-3 conversion rule set out under Admissions.
MDS Round One, 2026
MCC's MDS round-one result placed 51 candidates at the college, leaving six seats: two Muslim minority seats each in oral pathology and periodontology, the only minority seat in public health dentistry, and one NRI seat in conservative dentistry.
| MDS speciality | Self-financed merit ranks | Muslim minority ranks | NRI ranks | Fee a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orthodontics | 1,103 to 2,880 | 2,387 to 9,096 | 8,120 to 10,684 | Rs 15,00,000 |
| Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | 1,379 to 3,253 | 3,355 to 3,771 | 4,704 to 6,631 | Rs 12,00,000 |
| Oral Pathology | 1,430 to 8,107 | 8,383, one of three filled | No NRI seat | Rs 1,00,000 |
| Oral Medicine and Radiology | 1,731 to 6,511 | 13,877 to 16,929 | No NRI seat | Rs 2,50,000 |
| Prosthodontics | 1,856 to 5,062 | 4,130 to 7,575 | No NRI seat | Rs 11,00,000 |
| Conservative Dentistry | 2,797 to 4,618 | 5,777 to 6,620 | 10,217 to 13,826, two of three filled | Rs 15,00,000 |
| Paediatric Dentistry | 6,784 to 8,953 | 8,871 to 10,844 | No NRI seat | Rs 11,00,000 |
| Public Health Dentistry | 6,854 to 6,896 | None of one filled | No NRI seat | Rs 2,50,000 |
| Periodontology | 7,923 to 11,692 | 10,829, one of three filled | No NRI seat | Rs 8,00,000 |
Cheap subjects did not go begging here. An oral pathology seat at Rs 1,00,000 a year opened at rank 1,430, ahead of prosthodontics at Rs 11,00,000, while periodontology, priced at Rs 8,00,000, drew the deepest open ranks of all. Minority seats told a different story: oral medicine went as deep as 16,929, and oral pathology, periodontology and public health dentistry were left with empty minority chairs.
Placements
The college's NIRF returns give five graduating classes, and the year that stands out is 2021-22, when all 80 BDS graduates were entered as neither placed nor in higher study.
| BDS class leaving | Graduated on time | Placed | Median salary | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 57 | 42 | Rs 4,48,000 | 15 |
| 2021-22 | 80 | 0 | Nil | 0 |
| 2022-23 | 88 | 68 | Rs 6,00,000 | 20 |
| 2023-24 | 92 | 67 | Rs 7,00,000 | 25 |
| 2024-25 | 96 | 66 | Rs 8,00,000 | 30 |
Yenepoya's weakest BDS years are 2020-21 and 2021-22. The class of 2020-21 graduated 57 on time from a 2016-17 intake of 77, against 100 sanctioned places, per the 2024 return, and the nil line for 2021-22 appears unchanged in the 2025 data. From 2022-23 on, between 66 and 68 graduates a year took jobs, the median reached Rs 8,00,000 for 2024-25 and the higher-study count climbed to 30, per the 2026 return.
| MDS class leaving | Graduated on time | Placed | Median salary | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 48 | 46 | Rs 6,58,000 | 2 |
| 2021-22 | 49 | 46 | Rs 7,65,000 | 3 |
| 2022-23 | 51 | 49 | Rs 8,40,000 | 2 |
| 2023-24 | 46 | 44 | Rs 9,00,000 | 2 |
| 2024-25 | 51 | 49 | Rs 9,50,000 | 2 |
No MDS entry year in these filings has filled the sanctioned 57. The 2022-23 entry year admitted 53, per the 2026 return. The single MDS median of Rs 9,50,000 also pools residents paying Rs 1,00,000 a year with those paying Rs 15,00,000 under the MDS notification, so it says little about any one subject.
Seat Matrix
Under code 200350, MCC's 2026 round-one matrix prints three BDS lines of 55 self-financed merit, 30 Muslim minority and 15 NRI places, each marked open, so there is no OBC, SC, ST or EWS carve-out inside any of them. The same matrix gives A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences 95 self-financed merit and 5 NRI seats and Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore a single line of 100, with no minority quota at either.
The 57 MDS places, the PG intake entered in the 2026 NIRF return and the sum of the DCI-permitted seats on the college's intake sheet, carry the same three labels in the final deemed MDS matrix.
| MDS speciality, code 900131 | Self-financed merit | Muslim minority | NRI | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics | 3 | 2 | 3 | 8 |
| Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics | 2 | 3 | 3 | 8 |
| Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge | 5 | 3 | 0 | 8 |
| Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | 2 | 2 | 2 | 6 |
| Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology | 3 | 3 | 0 | 6 |
| Oral Medicine and Radiology | 3 | 3 | 0 | 6 |
| Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry | 4 | 2 | 0 | 6 |
| Periodontology | 3 | 3 | 0 | 6 |
| Public Health Dentistry | 2 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
Orthodontics is the one subject where open merit is the smallest pool, with two chairs against three minority and three NRI. NRI seats exist in only three subjects, the same three that carry a dollar price in the MDS notification.
Those all-India queues show up on the roll: the 2026 return counts 340 of 499 BDS students and 124 of 152 MDS students from beyond Karnataka, and women make up 390 of the BDS roll.
Rankings
Yenepoya has appeared in every NIRF dental table since 2020, but its position has drifted from 20th to 31st as the research score fell in almost every cycle.
| NIRF year | Rank | Score | Research and Professional Practice | Graduation Outcomes | Perception |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 20 | 58.01 | 32.69 | 63.60 | 53.96 |
| 2021 | 21 | 57.69 | 24.41 | 76.83 | 49.26 |
| 2022 | 23 | 53.90 | 16.49 | 76.11 | 54.48 |
| 2023 | 28 | 53.77 | 12.33 | 71.05 | 57.81 |
| 2024 | 26 | 53.32 | 13.49 | 72.58 | 49.04 |
| 2025 | 31 | 55.00 | 10.63 | 80.88 | 43.05 |
The 2025 score actually rose, from 53.32 to 55.00, on a jump in graduation outcomes and a teaching and resources score of 80.69, yet the rank slipped from 26th to 31st as other colleges moved past it; within its own score, perception fell from 49.04 to 43.05 and research from 13.49 to 10.63, per the 2024 and 2025 tables.
Yenepoya trails its Deralakatte neighbour by 25 places: A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences is 6th on 69.00 and Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore is 11th on 62.43 in the 2025 table. Yenepoya's research score of 10.63 is under half of Manipal Mangalore's 26.03 and under a third of A.B. Shetty's 32.18 in the same table. The college's accreditation page quotes the 31st place but credits the ranking to the "Ministry of Human Resource Development", while its own NIRF data sheet is headed Ministry of Education.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
Clinical work extends well past Deralakatte. The college runs six peripheral oral health centres, at Harekala, Jokatte, Kakkinje, Naringana, Ullal and the Zulekha complex on Bibi Alabi Road, per its peripheral centres page, and its public health dentistry department operates mobile dental vans that it says reach more than 30,000 people a year, per the mobile van page.
The college's outreach table for 2018 to 2022 counts 233 general camps with 17,742 beneficiaries and 98 cancer screening and awareness programmes reaching 9,241 people. Inside the building, a Museum of Dental Materials dating from 1999 holds antique materials and animal jaws, per the museum page, and a Centre for Forensic Odontology set up in 2021 names age estimation, sex determination and bite mark analysis as its thrust areas, per its centre page.
Yenepoya has filed its 2022 OPD attendance twice, and the two filings disagree. The 2026 return puts average OPD attendance at 618, yet its label still says calendar year 2022, and for that very year the 2024 return had entered 438. The 2026 filing books Rs 1,23,30,455 of library purchases for 2024-25 against Rs 30,11,328 a year before, while new lab kit cost Rs 64,65,129 after Rs 23,54,599 in 2023-24 and nothing at all in 2022-23.
Off the clinic floor, a Yenepoya BDS student shares rooms and reading space with medical, nursing and physiotherapy students. The university's hostel page describes 13 hostels across its colleges, and the college's campus life page puts dental undergraduates in the YMK men's hostel and the Zulekha ladies hostel alongside medical, physiotherapy and nursing students. The same page describes a central library of 30,000 books and the Yendurance Zone indoor sports complex, and the university's library and information science page names that library as the Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) Central Library.
Hostel
Faculty
The 2026 NIRF roster lists 108 teachers, all regular, made up of 46 professors, 26 readers and 36 lecturers, with 52 women. Nine hold a PhD, six alongside an MDS. The 2025 data entered 116, per the nirfindia.org sheet.
The roster runs deep in service. Its earliest joining date is 16-11-1994, for Dr Sham S Bhat A, a professor with 415 months of experience, and principal Dr Laxmikanth Chatra joined on 01-01-1997, per the same roster. The single busiest hiring year on the list is 2023, with 13 appointments.
The counter on the college homepage reads 270+ faculty, far more than the 108 names the college filed with NIRF in its 2026 return, so rely on the filed roster when judging the teaching strength.
Sponsored research income swings from year to year: the 2026 return books Rs 1,77,48,696 for 2022-23, Rs 66,25,189 for 2023-24 and Rs 1,94,47,427 from 8 agencies across 12 projects for 2024-25, and five scholars pursue a PhD full time with eight more part time.

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The A+ on the letterhead of both 2026-27 Yenepoya notifications is a university-level NAAC grade, awarded to Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) as a whole. The university's accreditation page records CGPA 3.47 "on a four-point scale", valid for five years from 10-08-2022, while the dental college's copy of the same notice calls it a "seven-point scale". The university's version is the one that matches how NAAC grades.
The Dental Council still files the college under the city's old spelling: "Yenepoya Dental College, Mangalore" appears on the council's list of dental colleges, and the college's intake sheet heads its 100 BDS seats and its nine MDS speciality lines "Seats permitted / Recognized by DCI".
Aid
Scholarships
The college names no fee scheme of its own. What it does post is a two-page scholarship sheet of government links, covering the central NSP, Karnataka's SSP and the PM-Vidyalaxmi loan portal with its interest subvention.
Every full waiver on record here is paid by the college itself. The 2026 return puts 45 Yenepoya BDS students on a full waiver paid from institution funds, none on a government or private-body waiver, and 428 on no full waiver at all. The same column held 5 in the 2024 return and 36 in the 2025 data, so institutional waivers have grown, but the criteria behind them are not published. Postgraduates see far less of it: 3 residents out of 152 hold such a waiver in that filing.

Student Reviews
Expertie has no survey of Yenepoya students, and the only voices on the college homepage are testimonials the college picked from its earliest classes and older MDS batches. One quote, from a graduate listed as 92 batch BDS, says he was the first student to register; another, from the 2004 MDS orthodontics batch, is signed as professor and head of department at a Ludhiana dental college.
What those quotes cannot tell a 2026 applicant, and a current intern or resident can: whether six-sharing rooms are really open to first-years under the compulsory hostel rule, how often BDS students rotate to the six peripheral centres, how minority status is checked at reporting, and which stipend schedule an MDS resident is actually paid.
Campus
Gallery
The college's history page is its own photo archive: the 1992 inauguration and first campus on Bibi Alabi Road, the first BDS batch, the Kodialbail hospital campus, and construction photographs of the Deralakatte buildings from 1999 and 2000. The university hostel page adds photographs of the Gardyenia hostels and the Zulekha girls hostel.
