Chettinad Dental College And Research Institute (inst. Code - 267), Kancheepuram

Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu Est. 2006 Official site Updated
NIRF Dental
#32

Chettinad Dental College and Research Institute shares the Chettinad Health City campus on Rajiv Gandhi Salai at Kelambakkam with a deemed university, but it is not part of that university. Its BDS and MDS degrees come from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, and its seats are filled by Tamil Nadu's own Selection Committee at Kilpauk, not by the central Medical Counselling Committee. In 2026 that committee treated all 100 BDS places as government quota seats, at a regulated tuition of Rs 2,50,000 a year. Among the forty dental institutions NIRF ranked in 2025, Chettinad came 32nd.

Overview

The college's own BDS information bulletin for the current session is addressed to candidates of the "Dental common counseling conducted by Directorate of Medical Education (Secretary Selection Committee, Kilpauk)" and calls the college affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Guindy (BDS bulletin). On its NAAC quality report the college ticks "Affliated" rather than constituent, names The Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University as the affiliating body and gives its financial status as private (AQAR 2023-24). The BDS and MDS admission page calls it a self-financing institution.

That settles the parent. Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE), the deemed university next door, fills its MBBS seats through MCC; the dental college is outside it, and its name is missing from both MCC's NEET-UG 2026 round-one matrix and its deemed-university MDS matrix. What ties the two together is the campus and its services: the principal's address on the bulletin is dentalprincipal@care.edu.in, and the college's MDS bulletin sends every provisionally selected resident for a medical examination at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, CARE's medical college (MDS bulletin).

Its start date is not fixed in one place. The homepage says the Rajah Muthiah Chettiar Charitable Trust founded the college in 2007, the DCI norms page posts university affiliation orders from 2007-08 onward, and the earliest joining date on the college's NIRF 2026 roster is 03-10-2006. The government's higher education survey, AISHE, files it as a rural, private unaided affiliated college founded in 2006, and its AISHE number C-45605 reappears inside the NIRF ID shown on the college's NIRF page.

Kancheepuram or Chengalpattu

Official lists still print Kancheepuram. The Dental Council's college list names "Chettinad Dental College & Research Institute, Kancheepuram", and the Selection Committee's 2026 management quota prospectus places the college under a Kancheepuram District heading. The boundary moved, not the college: according to the Chengalpattu collectorate, the new district was formed out of Kancheepuram on 29.11.2019, and CARE's MBBS bulletin already writes the shared Kelambakkam address with Chengalpattu Dist. When you search the counselling PDFs, look for "Kancheepuram", which is how the Selection Committee spells this college.

Courses & Fees

Both 2026-27 bulletins describe the same two courses, BDS and MDS. Undergraduates study for four years and then intern for one, and MDS residents train for three years in any of nine specialities. The admission page cites the central government orders behind each, F.No.V.12017/13/2006-DE of 20 October 2011 for BDS and No.V.12017/10/2017-DE of 15 December 2017 for MDS. On state seats the tuition is not Chettinad's decision. The Selection Committee's government quota prospectus prints a single government quota fee for all self-financing dental colleges, and a Selection Committee notification warns those colleges against charging anything the state fee committee has not approved.

BDS Fee

ChargeAmount
Tuition, government quotaRs 2,50,000 a year
Caution deposit, refundableRs 5,000
HostelRs 10,000 a month
MessAbout Rs 7,500 a month
Transport, optionalRs 1,20,000 a year

That disclosure was published under a Supreme Court direction that private medical and dental colleges declare hostel, mess and other charges before counselling, and Chettinad's row also adds the university's one-time registration fee and yearly examination fees. The college's own BDS bulletin lists a development fee and a university registration charge payable at admission, quotes hostel and transport as annual minimums, and refuses part payment of anything due at reporting (BDS bulletin). Get the complete first-year bill in writing before the allotment order is downloaded.

The state's management quota BDS rate is Rs 6,00,000 and its NRI rate Rs 9,00,000, per the management quota prospectus. Neither touched Kelambakkam in 2026, because no management or NRI BDS seat was offered here (see Seat Matrix).

MDS Fee

At a non-minority college, a government quota MDS resident pays Rs 2,50,000 a year whatever the subject, under the Selection Committee's MDS fee notice. Management residents pay Rs 9,50,000 in a clinical subject and Rs 3,50,000 in a para clinical one, though the notice never lists which subjects fall in which group. Chettinad's MDS bulletin settles the grouping its own way, charging the lower management rate in public health dentistry alone and the Rs 9,50,000 rate in every other subject, oral pathology and oral medicine included (MDS fee notice, MDS bulletin).

No 2026 management resident at Kelambakkam was in any of those three subjects. The Selection Committee's MDS vacancy position put every management and NRI seat here in the other six, from orthodontics to periodontology.

A resident who leaves late pays heavily twice over. The college's bulletin makes anyone who discontinues after the statutory cut-off date pay tuition for the rest of the course, and the state's government quota MDS prospectus adds a discontinuation fee of Rs.15 Lakhs payable to the Selection Committee.

Admissions

Chettinad takes no applications of its own for either degree. The admission page tells NEET qualifiers to apply separately for government and management quota through the Selection Committee of the Directorate of Medical Education, and names its Secretary at Kilpauk as the authority that allots both.

BDS Nativity and Reservation

Because every Chettinad BDS seat in 2026 was a state government quota seat, the state's nativity rule governed the whole intake. The government quota prospectus says a candidate should be a native of Tamil Nadu and rules out residents from other states and anyone who sat NEET-UG 2026 as another state's native; a native of another state who studied Standard VI to XII continuously in Tamil Nadu is considered, but only for open category seats. Allotment follows NEET marks under the 69% rule of reservation. Choice-locking a government quota seat in a self-financing college needs a Rs.30,000 security deposit, waived for SC, SCA and ST candidates whose family income is under 2.5 lakhs.

Chettinad's own reporting list mirrors those rules. It asks for the Selection Committee's allotment order, a community certificate, a nativity certificate, a first graduate certificate where one applies, and an eligibility certificate from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University for students from other boards (BDS bulletin). Parts of the bulletin are carried over from older years, including NRI document rules for a quota the college did not offer in 2026, so where it and the prospectus differ, follow the prospectus.

Three sessions ago the picture was different. Chettinad's BDS notice for 2023-24 split allotment between a government self-financing quota and a management quota, and asked management applicants only for Indian citizenship, not Tamil Nadu nativity.

Exits After Allotment

Walking away late costs Rs 10,00,000, four years of Chettinad's state quota tuition. Under the government quota prospectus, a BDS student who discontinues after the Round 2 resignation date, or who takes a Round 3 or stray round seat and does not join, pays that discontinuation fee of Rs.10,00,000 and loses the deposit and tuition already paid. Entering the stray round needs a further 2 Lakhs deposit for BDS, kept by the state if the candidate is allotted a seat and does not join.

MDS

Chettinad's 36 government quota MDS seats in 2026 were open to two groups, per the government quota MDS prospectus: Tamil Nadu natives with a BDS from any state, who compete in their own community, and natives of other states who did their BDS and internship in Tamil Nadu, who compete for open seats only. Graduates of another university also need an eligibility certificate from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University at admission. Management and NRI candidates follow a separate prospectus with a Rs.2,00,000 security deposit for a management seat in a self-financing dental college.

Cutoff

Closing marks at Chettinad can be read straight off the state's allotment PDFs, which print state rank, community and NEET score for every person placed at the college, so the absence of a college-issued cutoff costs an applicant nothing.

BDS in 2026

The government quota round-one list of 27.08.2026 placed 93 candidates at Chettinad with NEET-UG marks between 489 and 370 (government quota allotment). Two weeks earlier, on 13.08.2026, seven government school students had taken the remaining seats under the 7.5% preferential reservation on marks from 468 to 430 (7.5% allotment list). The management quota round-one list published alongside the government one allots nobody to the college (management quota allotment).

BC and MBC candidates took 71 of the 93 places and OC candidates 2. The bottom mark of 370 went to an SCA candidate on the allotment list, so it marks the reserved SCA line, not where open seats closed. Round one was not the end of it either: 33 government quota BDS seats at Chettinad were back on offer in the Selection Committee's round-two vacancy position, and candidates allotted to them can come in below the round-one marks.

On the same round-one list, Chettinad's highest allottee scored 489, below Adhiparasakthi, Tagore and Ragas and above Sri Venkateswara, Madha and Asan Memorial.

MDS in 2026

Every one of the 50 MDS places was allotted in the first round on 05.09.2026. Marks in this table are NEET-MDS scores as printed in the Selection Committee's lists.

Oral surgery took the highest-ranked government quota candidate placed here, at state rank 38 on the government quota MDS list. On the management quota MDS list, management allottees mostly scored below the government allottees in the same subject, and the five NRI allottees scored from 403 down to 308.

Placements

Four BDS graduating classes appear across Chettinad's NIRF filings, and the two oldest are weak on every count. The 2021-22 and 2022-23 classes each put fewer than a third of graduates into jobs and sent nobody on to higher study, per the NIRF 2025 data.

2023-249732Rs 4,20,00037
2024-2510053Rs 5,04,00047

The turnaround is recent. The 2024-25 filing is the first in which jobs and further study together cover a whole class, 53 and 47 out of 100, with a Rs 5,04,000 median.

MDS class leavingGraduated on timePlacedMedian salary

2023-242323Rs 11,40,000
2024-252323Rs 13,80,000

No MDS graduate in these four years is shown as unplaced, and residents finishing in 2024-25 reported more than twice the Rs 6,00,000 median of those who finished two years before, per the 2026 filing.

The NAAC report counts differently. Chettinad's AQAR for 2023-24 puts 105 of 110 outgoing students under "placed / self-employed", while its NIRF filing shows 32 BDS and 23 MDS placements for the same year. The NAAC heading takes in self-employment, while the NIRF column counts students placed, so ask the college which definition produced the higher number.

University examination results on the college site stop in 2019. Its result statistics sheet shows the regular final BDS batch passing at 52% in 2012 and 100% in 2014.

Seat Matrix

No other self-financing dental college in Tamil Nadu's 2026 round-one table gave its whole BDS intake to the government quota. The round-one vacancy position shows Chettinad with 93 government quota seats and empty management, minority and NRI columns, while each of the other 17 colleges in that table carries management, minority or NRI seats.

The roll still reflects the older mix. Of 500 BDS students on the NIRF 2026 return, 308 are from Tamil Nadu, 165 from other states and 27 from abroad, numbers that fit the management quota described in the college's 2023-24 BDS notice far better than a nativity-bound intake.

MDS Seats

Four documents give four MDS figures. The homepage still says 23 postgraduate seats a year, the NIRF 2026 return enters a sanctioned PG intake of 38 for 2024-25, the college's current MDS bulletin lists approved seats adding up to 47, and the Selection Committee counselled 50 in 2026. The bulletin's list is the first number column below.

Rankings

Twenty-seventh on debut in 2022 and again in 2023, Chettinad has been 33rd and then 32nd in the two tables since. It does not appear in the 2020 or 2021 tables, even though its NIRF page links the data it filed for those years.

20253254.9081.4811.2078.6570.6843.05

Resources and outreach carry the recent score. Of the five parameters, teaching, learning and resources made the biggest climb between the 2022 and 2025 tables, 68.74 up to 81.48, with outreach next at 61.32 up to 70.68. Research peaked at 22.69 in 2023 and slid back to 11.20. Graduation outcomes have not regained the 88.96 of 2022, and the 2025 figure of 78.65 is the lowest of the nine Tamil Nadu names in that year's dental table.

A three-point gain in 2025 moved the college up just one place. The 2025 table packs the 30th to 35th ranks inside half a point, from 55.08 for Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute to 54.73 for Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Departments

Nine clinical departments, one per MDS subject from oral surgery to public health dentistry, make up the departments page. The NAAC report adds that clinical teaching spans 9 dental and 8 medical departments, and its plan-of-action table credits the year with 180 outreach camps (AQAR 2023-24). The departments page also carries a "Super speciality" tab, but no super speciality dental course appears in either admission bulletin.

Camp statistics on the community services page run from the 2009-10 screening camps to 2022, and research proposals from staff and students go to the college's own Institutional Human Ethics Committee, provisionally registered with the Department of Health Research as EC/NEW/INST/2025/TN/0664 according to the research page.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The two filings count outpatients in different units. The AQAR counts 177058 outpatients treated in 2023-24, and the NIRF data gives an average OPD attendance of 1012 for calendar 2023 (2025 sheet) and 1112 for 2024 (2026 return).

Spending rose steeply in 2024-25. Laboratory equipment took Rs 5,61,59,254 that year after Rs 1,28,73,849 in 2023-24, other capital assets Rs 6,24,81,840 and the library Rs 4,71,06,629, while maintenance and consumables went from Rs 8,80,11,388 to Rs 21,80,68,346, all per the 2026 return.

Clinical kit named in the AQAR includes dental lasers, operating microscopes, a conscious sedation unit and computed tomography. The same report describes a library holding 2839 books and 1771 back volumes of 98 print journals, with 32066 e-books reached through the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. E-consortium, Delnet and Proquest. The college's BDS bulletin lists campus services shared across Chettinad Health City: a convention centre, NABL-accredited laboratories, biometric and RFID attendance with SMS alerts to parents, and turnstile gates justified by the rural setting (BDS bulletin).

Hostel

Boys and girls live in separate hostels on campus. The BDS bulletin says the hostel fee covers Wi-Fi, laundromat and ironing, and a central vacuum system for cleaning (BDS bulletin), and the NAAC report mentions an indoor gym, a yoga room and a swimming pool (AQAR 2023-24). Charges are in the BDS fee table above. Neither document describes room sizes or how many students share.

Faculty

Chettinad's teaching list in the NIRF 2026 return runs to 65 names, all regular appointments with an MDS and none with a PhD. There are 26 lecturers, 20 professors and 18 readers besides Principal Dr P. Rajesh, on the staff since 24-02-2009, and 44 of the 65 are women. Eighteen names on the roster carry joining dates in 2024 or 2025, twelve of them from 2024.

The college's other filings count staff differently. For 2023-24 the NAAC report gives a student-teacher ratio of 468 students to 84 full-time teachers (AQAR). Doctoral work is also inconsistent: the 2025 NIRF sheet showed 28 full-time and 15 part-time PhD scholars, and the next year's return enters none.

Research grants come and go. After a blank 2022-23 and Rs 14,40,744 in 2023-24, Chettinad's 2026 return books Rs 5,72,25,166 against 62 sponsored projects in 2024-25.

Notable Alumni

Chettinad's graduates meet through CLAW, short for Connecting, Leading, Achieving and Welcoming, whose page links yearly activity reports starting with 2021-2022, meeting minutes, a newsletter and a spreadsheet of alumni details for 2007 to 2018. CLAW's page celebrates alumni success in general terms and puts a name to none of them.

News & Articles

Chettinad's own site is slow to update. Its homepage leads with a 2025 advertisement for a project assistant funded by the Department of Health Research, its menu still links the 2023-24 information bulletins, and its awards and events listings end in 2019. The 2026 allotment lists, vacancy positions and MDS fee notice for Chettinad seats were all posted by the Selection Committee on tnmedicalselection.net.

College Compare

Of the nine Tamil Nadu names in the NIRF 2025 dental table, Chettinad is the only one with no BDS line in MCC's round-one matrix. That leaves it the one college in the group a Tamil Nadu candidate enters through the state's government quota, at the state's fee.

For most families the deciding number is the fee. The other eight fill BDS seats through MCC's deemed-university rounds at fees set by each university, while a government quota seat at Chettinad carries the state's Rs 2,50,000, which the government quota prospectus applies to every self-financing dental college. Tagore, Ragas and Madha charge that same state tuition and are absent from the 2025 table, so against them the practical comparison is allotment marks and travel.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

Chettinad has been through two NAAC cycles, both recorded in its AQAR for 2023-24: grade A at CGPA 3.16, valid 01/05/2015 to 30/04/2020, then A+ at CGPA 3.28, valid 08/04/2021 to 07/04/2026. That second period ended on 07/04/2026 on the report's own dates, and the college's 2026-27 admission bulletins still carry "Accredited by NAAC with 'A+' Grade" on the cover, so ask for a renewed certificate or NAAC's extension letter.

Chettinad is on the Dental Council of India's college list, filed under its old Kancheepuram address. On its DCI norms page the college posts affiliation and continuation orders year by year for both degrees, but the most recent it links cover 2022-23.

Scholarships

Chettinad's site has no scholarship page, and its NAAC report mentions only Tamil Nadu government scholarships that the college processes for underprivileged students (AQAR 2023-24). Its NIRF data tells a bigger story, with most qualifying BDS students on full fee waivers paid by the college.

Only the government column has a published rule behind it. SC, SCA and ST students on a government quota seat in a self-financing college whose parents earn below Rs.2,50,000 do not pay compulsory non-refundable fees, and the college recovers the amount under the central government's scholarship programme, per the government quota prospectus. Nothing published explains the larger institutional column, and the AQAR goes further, counting all 468 students as receiving a scholarship, freeship or fee waiver in 2023-24. With every 2026 BDS seat now a state quota seat at a fixed Rs 2,50,000, the useful question for Chettinad's office is whether the 206 institutional waivers in the 2026 return will also reach a student admitted on this year's intake, and on what criteria.

Voices

Student Reviews

No student voice appears among Chettinad's own web pages, where the testimonials page links four departmental testimonial files, the endodontics one titled PatientTestimonials. What academics and employers think, rather than students, is what NIRF's perception score records, and Chettinad's slipped to 43.05 in the 2025 table from 49.04 in the 2024 one.

Three things are worth asking a Chettinad student. Has the all-government-quota intake changed who sits in a first-year class, compared with the batches ahead of it? Does a first-year hostel bill match the monthly hostel and mess figures in the state's fee disclosure? And in public health dentistry, where the college's seat list and the state's differ, are all current residents registered with the university?
