Thiagarajar College

Madurai, Tamil Nadu Est. 1949 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#20

Type Thiagarajar College Madurai into a search box and the results fold together three separate institutions that share the founder's family name: this arts and science college, the older Thiagarajar College of Engineering, and the Thiagarajar School of Management. The one placed 20th among all colleges in India in the government's NIRF 2025 college ranking is the arts and science college on Kamarajar Salai, an autonomous, government-aided institution affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. Each figure here traces to one of two places: the college's own site at tcarts.in and its 2026-2027 prospectus, or the Ministry of Education's NIRF 2025 table. Where the college itself publishes nothing, this page leaves the blank standing instead of filling it from an aggregator.

Overview

Thiagarajar College was founded in 1949 by the industrialist and philanthropist Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar and formally inaugurated that October by the King of Bhavnagar, then Governor of Madras State, as the college's 2026-2027 prospectus records. It is run as a charitable, non-profit body by the Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trust, and it holds an A++ grade from NAAC in its fourth assessment cycle. That autonomy is academic rather than administrative: the college designs its own courses and sets and marks its own question papers, but a graduate's degree is still issued in the name of Madurai Kamaraj University, the affiliating body.

The rank rests on an unusual shape. Its 68.93 overall on the NIRF 2025 college ranking is built almost entirely on two pillars, a 75.68 for teaching, learning and resources and a 78.00 for graduation outcomes, with a 32.83 for perception pulling hard the other way. Read plainly, this is a college that examiners and its own completion data rate highly, but that the wider public rates as if it were less known than it is, which is exactly the gap a search like this one is trying to close.

The campus is compact, 13 acres in the Teppakulam quarter of the city, and the same college homepage counts around 5,510 students taught by 275 faculty, with an alumni body it numbers at 18,874.

Courses & Fees

The college is built in two layers a first-time applicant has to understand before anything else: an older aided wing, where seats are government-funded and fees are low, and a larger self-financed wing that carries the newer, job-oriented degrees. The college homepage counts 56 programmes across 14 departments, and the split below shows the kind of degree each layer offers.

Stream and levelRepresentative programmes
Aided undergraduateB.A. Tamil, B.A. English, B.A. Economics, B.Com., Business Administration, B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science
Aided postgraduate and researchM.A. Tamil, English and Economics; M.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology; Ph.D. across those subjects
Self-financed undergraduateB.Com. Professional Accounting, B.Com. Fintech, B.C.A., B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Computer Science in Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Biotechnology, B.Sc. Microbiology, B.Sc. Psychology
Self-financed postgraduateM.Com. (CMA Integrated), MBA, M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Sc. Microbiology, M.Sc. Psychology

On fees, the college publishes less than an aggregator implies. It states plainly that it runs as a charitable non-profit, accepts no capitation fee or donation for admission, and lets Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants study an aided programme free of cost, as the prospectus sets out. What it does not put on a public page is a rupee-by-rupee tuition schedule: aided-stream fees are the low, government-regulated amounts, while each self-financed programme sets its own fee, shown inside the online application once you pick a course and pay the flat application charge the college sets for it. Until a rupee figure appears in the MyCamu application against the exact course you have chosen, treat any "total fee" quoted on an aggregator as guesswork.

Admissions

Admission here is a direct application to the college, not a seat handed out by a state counselling engine. Everything runs online through the college's MyCamu portal: you register with your own email, choose the exact programme, upload your certificates and pay the application fee, and a provisional selection letter comes back to that same email, as the prospectus describes. The arts and science programmes here admit on marks alone, with no written test to sit. Selection turns on your Class 12 marks in the subjects the programme requires, so a B.Sc. Physics seat weighs your higher-secondary Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics rather than a common-entrance rank.

The windows are short and pinned to the school-leaving results: undergraduate applications close about ten days after the higher-secondary results are published, and postgraduate applications close in the middle of May. Seats are then filled against Tamil Nadu's communal reservation roster, with the state's quotas for Backward, Most Backward, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar and Scheduled Tribe candidates, alongside a differently-abled quota and small special quotas for outstanding sportspersons, NCC cadets and the children of ex-servicemen.

Cutoff

Search "Thiagarajar College cutoff" and you are after a number the college does not set in advance. The college scores each applicant on their Class 12 marks in the subjects a programme demands, then works down each community list until the seats run out, so the effective cutoff for a programme is only ever the last mark it admitted, fixed after applications close and moving with each year's applicant pool. The college does not publish a fixed cutoff table ahead of the cycle, so a specific "Thiagarajar College cutoff for 2026" quoted before selection is a guess. Aim for strong higher-secondary marks in a programme's core subjects instead, because within each community list the seat goes to the higher scores first.

Placements

The college's Placement Cell, running since 2003, reports an 80% placement rate for its students. The trend behind that figure is the more useful signal: the count of students placed rose from 518 in 2020-21 to 1056 in 2024-25, more than doubling across five years, on the college's placement statistics page. Its listed recruiters are the mainstream IT and services employers that hire arts and science graduates in volume, among them TCS, Zoho, Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, HCL, Capgemini, Accenture and Deloitte.

The college stops short of an audited average or highest package, so a salary figure quoted against its name on an aggregator has no primary source standing behind it. For a general arts and science college feeding IT services and higher study, the placement rate and the doubling in numbers placed carry more signal than a single headline salary would.

Seat Matrix

We could not find a published, programme-wise seat matrix for Thiagarajar College. The college fills seats course by course against Tamil Nadu's communal reservation percentages rather than posting a public intake table, and it keeps small reserved quotas for sportspersons, NCC certificate holders and the children of ex-servicemen. Until it publishes a per-programme seat count, the reliable place to read how many places a course holds is the current prospectus and the MyCamu portal during the application window.

Rankings

Thiagarajar College is ranked 20th among all colleges in India in the NIRF 2025 college ranking, the Ministry of Education's national framework, which also makes it the highest-placed college in Madurai on that table, ahead of The American College at 59th and Fatima College at 100th. Split into its five NIRF parameters, the 68.93 total leans on teaching and graduation outcomes and is held down by the perception score that national opinion surveys assign it.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources75.68
Graduation Outcomes78.00
Research and Professional Practice70.21
Outreach and Inclusivity53.52
Perception32.83
Overall68.93

The spread across those five numbers tells you more than the rank alone. In the same NIRF table, graduation outcomes at 78.00 and teaching at 75.68 sit far above the 32.83 for perception, which is the signature of a strong regional college that recruiters and examiners in its own state know well but that national opinion surveys underrate. If you are weighing it against a flashier name, the government's own measure says the day-to-day teaching here is the part that holds up.

Departments

Teaching is organised by department, and the aided-versus-self-financed divide runs right down the department list. The older aided departments are the arts, commerce and pure-science ones the college has taught for decades; the self-financed side is where the commerce specialisations and the computing and life-science subjects, from Data Science to Biotechnology, have been added and grown fastest.

WingDepartments and subjects
AidedTamil, English, Economics, Business Administration, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science
Self-financedBusiness Administration, Commerce and its Professional Accounting, Computer Application, Honours and Fintech streams, Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Science in Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, English, Tamil, Psychology

At an arts and science college you are admitted into a single department and stay there, so the department that teaches your subject shapes the degree far more than the college's overall rank does. Read that department's own page before you settle on a course.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The library anchors the campus, with the college homepage putting its collection at 113,447 books. Beyond its own shelves, the college signs on as an NPTEL Local Chapter and points students to online courses through NPTEL, Coursera and other MOOCs, as its prospectus records. Its social wing is unusually visible for an arts and science college, with the homepage listing around 750 NSS volunteers and the 13-acre campus carrying a UGC-approved Women's Studies Centre that runs short job-skill courses, from web designing to data analytics using MS-Excel, alongside its gender-equity work.

On the money side of campus life, the college reports awarding around 500 scholarships a year and runs a dedicated Scholarship Cell to route students towards government and institutional support, with applicants asked to attach the required attendance and community certificates during the online application rather than after selection.

Hostel

The college is co-educational and keeps separate hostels for men and women, with hygienic, steam-cooked meals provided on site, per its prospectus. Accommodation is limited and is applied for separately from your course admission: a hostel place is requested from the warden only after you have secured a seat at the college, so treat a room as something to arrange once admission is confirmed rather than a given that travels with the seat.

Faculty

The college teaches with around 275 faculty across its departments, on its homepage count, and it organises teaching strictly by department rather than through a single consolidated school. Those 275 posts are not broken down by designation on any public page, so to gauge the teaching strength in a specific subject you are better served by that department's own staff page than by a college-wide headcount. Research output is modest by design for a teaching-first college, with the homepage recording around 300 research publications, which is consistent with the NIRF profile of a college that scores high on outcomes and lower on research.

Notable Alumni

We could not find a list of notable alumni for Thiagarajar College that traces to a reliable public record, so we are not printing one. Naming people on the strength of an aggregator's unsourced list is exactly the kind of claim this page avoids; when the college or a documented source publishes its distinguished alumni, this is where they will go.
