University College, Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Est. 1866 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#23

University College, Thiruvananthapuram began as a free school in 1834 and was raised to college rank in 1866, which makes it one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the country and, today, a government arts and science college affiliated to the University of Kerala. In the government's NIRF 2025 college ranking it is placed 23rd among all colleges in India, the second-highest position any Kerala college reached this year and the best of the state's government colleges. It is not a college you apply to at its own gate: places are filled on merit through the University of Kerala's centralised allotment, so the questions that matter here are which subjects it teaches, how the allotment works, and what a public college of this age actually offers.

Overview

The college is run by the Kerala government, not a trust or a private society, and its full name hides how far back it goes. As its history page records, the institution started in 1834 as an English school set up by the Government of Travancore during the reign of Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, after the Maharaja was impressed by a London Mission Society school at Nagarcoil and invited its teacher, Mr. Roberts, to open a similar one in the capital. The state paid the fees of the first 80 pupils, took the school over within a year, and it became known as the Raja's Free School. In 1866, under Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma, that school was raised to a college affiliated to the University of Madras and named H.H. The Maharaja's College, the direct ancestor of today's University College.

It now sits under the Directorate of Collegiate Education and awards its degrees through the University of Kerala. The official profile describes it as one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in India, teaching a student body of over three thousand across the arts, languages and sciences, and notes that admission to every course rests on merit alone. Two markers set it apart from an ordinary state college: the University Grants Commission has granted it "College with Potential for Excellence" status, and the Government of Kerala has identified it as a heritage institution.

Courses & Fees

University College is a pure arts and science college, and its teaching runs on three levels: the four-year undergraduate programme, master's degrees, and doctoral research. The official count is 18 undergraduate programmes, 21 postgraduate programmes and 18 Ph.D. research departments.

LevelProgrammesWhat it covers
Undergraduate (FYUGP)18BA and BSc majors across languages, the humanities and the sciences
Postgraduate (MA / MSc)2111 MA subjects and 10 MSc subjects
Doctoral (Ph.D.)18research departments recognised by the University of Kerala

The undergraduate degree now follows the state's Four Year Undergraduate Programme. As the programmes page sets out, a student may exit after three years and six semesters with a plain BA or BSc worth 133 credits, or stay the full four years and eight semesters for an honours or honours-with-research degree worth 177 credits, choosing a major alongside minors and skill, value-added and multidisciplinary courses. The postgraduate side is where the department list is fullest.

Postgraduate streamSubjects taught
MAArabic, Economics, English Language and Literature, Hindi, History, Islamic History, Malayalam, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, Tamil
MScBotany, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, Statistics with specialisation in Data Analytics, Zoology

On fees, a government college behaves nothing like a private one. Selection rests on merit with no management or payment quota, as the college states, and tuition for its arts and science courses is set by the state and the Directorate of Collegiate Education rather than by the college, which keeps it low by national standards. A government college's tuition is fixed centrally and reset each admission year, so the only fee that will really apply to you is the one written in the college's current fee and rules notification for your chosen subject.

Admissions

You do not sit a college-specific entrance test here. Admission to the undergraduate programmes is decided on merit through the University of Kerala's centralised allotment, where you register once on the university admissions portal, list your subject and college preferences, and are placed by an index mark built from your Plus Two marks, with reservation and community quotas applied under Kerala government rules. Postgraduate admission runs the same way through the university's PG allotment, weighted on your qualifying-degree marks, and doctoral entry is through the University of Kerala's own research process for the departments recognised to guide Ph.D. work.

What that means in practice is that the college fills its seats in successive allotment rounds rather than in a single list, so a place can open in a later round as higher-ranked applicants move elsewhere. Since selection is on marks alone, the realistic step for an applicant is a strong Plus Two score in the subject group the intended major needs, not a college-level test to prepare for.

Cutoff

There is no cutoff published in advance for University College, and that is the honest answer to the most-searched question about getting in. Because places are allotted by the University of Kerala's centralised process, the closing index mark for each subject and category is fixed only when a round's allotment list is released, and it moves between rounds as seats vacate. A crowded science department such as Physics or Mathematics settles at a higher index mark than a small-intake language like Tamil or Sanskrit, and every subject carries a separate closing mark for each reservation category. The only closing figure worth trusting is the one the University of Kerala prints in that subject's allotment list once a round has run; a mark circulated before allotment opens is guesswork.

Placements

University College runs a Placement Cell that arranges recruitment drives and career guidance, but it does not publish an audited placement report with an average or highest salary, so any package figure attached to its name on an aggregator is unverified. That gap is partly a matter of what the college is: a large share of its output is arts, language and science graduates who move on to postgraduate study, research, teaching and the state and central civil services, and the college even runs a dedicated Civil Service Coaching Centre on campus. Where the college does carry a measured result is graduation outcomes, on which NIRF scored it 75.09 in the 2025 college ranking; that number reflects how many students finish their degree and move into further study or work, not a salary the college has never claimed.

Seat Matrix

A consolidated, category-wise seat matrix for University College is not published as a single figure, because intake is counted subject by subject and released each cycle. The college's programmes page carries a sanctioned-strength column against each postgraduate subject, but the exact seats available to you, split across the general, reserved and community quotas, are set out in the University of Kerala allotment notification for that admission year. For the current numbers in any one programme, the binding source is that year's allotment notification rather than an aggregate total, and it should be read alongside the reservation rules that apply to a Kerala government college.

Rankings

University College's ranking rests on a broad, teaching-led profile rather than one standout figure. The NIRF 2025 college ranking puts it at rank 23 on 67.17 overall, and the parameter breakdown beneath that total explains the placement.

NIRF 2025 parameter (College list)University College score
Teaching, Learning and Resources76.56
Graduation Outcomes75.09
Research and Professional Practice63.30
Outreach and Inclusivity54.83
Perception28.12

The shape is that of a strong public teaching college: teaching resources and graduation outcomes carry the score, research and professional practice sits in the middle, and perception is the clear drag at 28.12, which is where a government college without a large postgraduate research machine tends to lose ground to older private and autonomous names. Read against its own state, that rank 23 is the second-best of any Kerala college on the 2025 list and the highest reached by a government college in the state, which is the fairer way to weigh it than the all-India number alone.

Departments

We could not find an official list of departments and schools for University College, Thiruvananthapuram. See the academics section on its official website.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The college's infrastructure reflects its age and its science teaching. It maintains a general library built up over its long history, an instrumentation facility that supports the science departments' laboratory and research work, and the on-campus Civil Service Coaching Centre that points to where many of its graduates aim. Student life is carried by a College Union, a National Cadet Corps unit, extension and literary clubs, a Women's Cell and an active Alumni Association, all listed on the college site. For the current state of any single facility, the college's own pages are the source to check, since a heritage campus renovates and adds rooms faster than a profile page updates.

Hostel

We could not find official hostel and accommodation details for University College, Thiruvananthapuram. Check the official website for the current hostel facilities and fees.

Faculty

Teaching at University College is organised strictly by department, across the language, humanities and science faculties, and the college publishes its staff through a faculty members directory rather than a single headline headcount. Because admission places you into one named department, the teaching strength that bears on your study is that department's own permanent and guest faculty, several of whom are recognised research supervisors for the University of Kerala's Ph.D. programmes. The honest read is to open the department page for the subject you want and look at its faculty and research profiles, since a college of this size is experienced one department at a time.

Notable Alumni

Where University College stands apart is the reach of the people it has taught, and its most distinctive thread runs through the Indian judiciary and public life. Its documented alumni include Anna Chandy, the first woman judge in India and later the first woman to sit on an Indian High Court, and M. Fathima Beevi, the first woman appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India, two firsts for women in the country's courts traced to the same college. The list also carries K. R. Narayanan, the tenth President of India, the former Kerala Chief Ministers Pattom A. Thanu Pillai and R. Sankar, and J. C. Daniel, regarded as the father of Malayalam cinema. Only alumni whose association with the college is set down in reliable public records are named here, rather than a padded roll of loosely linked names.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

Accreditation here comes from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), and its grade rewards a precise reading. The official profile records a third-cycle NAAC reaccreditation at grade A, CGPA 3.02, dated 2018. Alongside that, the University Grants Commission has conferred "College with Potential for Excellence" status, a recognition the UGC extends to colleges with a track record of quality, and the Government of Kerala has separately identified the campus as a heritage institution. Together these place it among the better-accredited government arts and science colleges in the state, though the NAAC cycle is now some years old and a fresh assessment would be the number to watch for.

Scholarships

As a Kerala government college, University College is plugged into the state's public scholarship and fee-concession machinery rather than running large college-funded awards of its own. Students from reserved and economically weaker categories are eligible for the Kerala government's post-matric scholarships and fee concessions administered through the state's e-Grantz system, and the college maintains a Fee Concession provision and a set of student endowments for merit and need. It also runs the state's Walk with a Scholar mentoring scheme and a Scholar Support Programme for students who need academic help. The college does not publish a single consolidated scholarship amount, so the reliable step is to check eligibility for the government schemes and the college's own concessions at admission rather than assume a fixed award.

Student Reviews

There is no verified, aggregated student-review score published for University College on an official channel, so this page carries none rather than an invented rating. Student feedback here tends to live in individual accounts of specific departments and of campus and political life rather than in a single published number, and it is worth reading in that granular form. The reliable substitute for a rating is the college's own NAAC grade and NIRF profile above, both drawn from formal assessments rather than open ratings.
