Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College Of Arts And Science

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu Est. 1964 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#94

This college has scored within about a point and a half of itself for three straight years on the Ministry of Education's college ranking, and has slid from 71st to 82nd to 94th while doing it. Nothing in its own filings shows a college coming apart. What the filings do show is one parameter falling a long way, one parameter scored lower than any other college on the table, and a set of returns that answer an applicant's practical questions far better than any brochure on the campus website does.

Overview

Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science sits at SRKV Post, Periyanaickenpalayam, on the northern edge of Coimbatore, and it is one institution inside a much larger Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya campus that also runs an industrial training institute, a polytechnic, a college of education, a college of physical education, an institute of agriculture and rural development, and a row of schools. The college's own annual report states that it was established in 1964 with the blessings of Srimat Swami Madhavananda Maharaj, and it has been autonomous for most of that run: the quality report it files each year records its autonomous status as conferred on 01-Jun-1981. Degrees are still awarded by Bharathiar University; the syllabus and the examinations are the college's own.

Two facts about the place shape almost everything else on this page, and neither one appears in the marketing copy. The first is that the same quality report enters the type of institution as Men, which the enrolment tables bear out: the latest return counts 1,492 undergraduate and 232 postgraduate students, of whom none are women. The second is that it runs two parallel wings under one roof, aided and self-financing, which the report describes as a financial status of self financed and grant-in-aid. Which wing a course belongs to decides who you apply to, what the seat costs and who pays the teacher.

A reader searching for a Coimbatore arts and science college with almost this name is very likely looking for a different one. Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science is a separate institution in the city, under a separate sponsor, with its own campus at Nava India. This page is only about the Mission Vidyalaya college at Periyanaickenpalayam.

Courses & Fees

Fifteen undergraduate programmes are on the state's register for this college, and the register splits them by who funds them. The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Collegiate Education lists seven aided programmes covering B.A. English Literature, B.Com. Co-operation, B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics and Communication Systems, and Computer Science, alongside eight self-financing ones that add B.Com. Commerce, B.Com. with Computer Applications, B.Com. Professional Accounting, BCA, B.Sc. Information Technology, a second B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Physical Education, and B.Sc. Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Postgraduate teaching is narrower, and the aided postgraduate application form carries M.Com. Co-operative Management, M.S.W., M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Chemistry, with MCA and doctoral work handled separately. The register is not the whole offer: the self-financing portal admits to a B.Com. Commerce (Hons.) and two B.Voc. programmes, in automobiles and in electrical and electronic devices, none of which the register carries.

No fee schedule exists anywhere the public can reach it. The college domain carries no fee page, all three admission portals collect marks and documents without quoting an amount, and the state register records sanctioned strength without money attached. The self-financing portal comes closest, and all it publishes is the bank account that admission payments go to, in the name SRMV CAS SF MANAGEMENT at the Indian Bank branch in Perianaickenpalayam. An aided seat and a self-financing seat in the same subject on the same campus do not cost the same thing, and the difference between them is the single most useful number this college does not publish. Ask the department coordinator for it in writing before you accept a place.

Admissions

Entry is by school marks, and both undergraduate forms are explicit about which marks count: each asks for the marks secured in Part III out of 400 from the higher secondary examination, subject by subject, with the register number and number of attempts for each. No entrance test, group discussion or interview stage is described on any of the college's three application portals.

What sits around that marks field is a Tamil Nadu government merit apparatus rather than a private-college screen, and the aided form and the self-financing one carry it in identical terms. Each asks for community under the state's OC, BC-Muslim, BC-Others, MBC/DNC, SC and ST categories, annual family income, whether the parent or guardian is a farmer or an agricultural labourer, whether the applicant is the son of an ex-serviceman of Tamil Nadu origin, whether the applicant is of Tamil origin from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and any distinction in sports, NCC or NSS. On the aided side those are the reservation and preference heads the state applies to government-aided seats. Because the self-financing portal collects exactly the same declarations, do not assume the unaided wing is a pure marks queue, and note that neither form states how any of it is weighed against the Part III total.

Applying to the wrong wing wastes a cycle, because the two do not share a form. Aided undergraduate applications run at aided.srmvcas.org, self-financing undergraduate applications at unaided.srmvcas.org and aided postgraduate applications at pg.srmvcas.org, and the self-financing portal publishes a named coordinator with a mobile number for each of its degrees. Work out first whether the subject you want is aided or self-financing on the state register, then apply on the matching portal.

Cutoff

No cut-off mark is published by this college for any programme, in any year. Its three admission portals take a Part III total and a set of certificates and return nothing public: no selection list, no rank list and no closing mark for any of the fifteen undergraduate courses appears anywhere on the college domain. Being autonomous, it admits against its own list rather than through a Tamil Nadu counselling round that would have published one for it.

The nearest public measure of how hard a seat is to get is the demand ratio the college filed in its 2019-20 quality report, which is now several cycles old and is offered here as the only figure of its kind on record. That year it received 155 applications for 40 places in B.Sc. Chemistry, 153 for 50 in B.Sc. Computer Science, 200 for 100 in B.Com. Commerce, 140 for 40 in B.Sc. Physics and 50 for 40 in B.A. English Literature. The spread matters more than the totals: Chemistry drew nearly four applications a seat and Physics three and a half, while English Literature drew barely more than one, so the mark that clears you into this college depends almost entirely on which department you name. Treat those ratios as a shape, not as this year's bar.

Placements

Placement is the smaller of the two undergraduate exits here, and that is the honest headline. The 2024-25 cohort is the most recent one on file. Of the 484 undergraduates who finished within the minimum stipulated time, 120 took a job at a median salary of Rs 198,000 a year and 231 carried on to higher studies. Nearly twice as many graduates carried on studying as took a job, and the same pattern holds in both earlier years on the return.

Undergraduate cohortFinished on timePlacedMedian salaryHigher studies
2022-23613114Rs 180,000268
2023-2455489Rs 156,000241
2024-25484120Rs 198,000231

Postgraduate outcomes invert that pattern. The same return records 119 postgraduates finishing on time in 2024-25, with 63 placed at a median of Rs 204,000 and 12 going on to further study: a master's cohort a quarter the size of the undergraduate one, placing more than twice the proportion and sending almost nobody on to study further. Recruitment on the ground ranges from a single department to most of the commerce and computing block. A Geeco Corporate Service drive for final-year B.Com. (CA) and B.Com. (PA) students took 18 participants and selected 10, while a Reliance Foundation day brought six companies in front of 184 students from eight programmes. If you are choosing this college, choose it knowing the median is a five-figure annual salary and the well-worn path out is a postgraduate seat.

Seat Matrix

The state register is the only course-by-course sanction on public record, and it breaks the college down by subject in a way its own prospectus pages do not. Sanctioned strength runs from 30 in the aided B.Sc. Electronics and Communication Systems to 100 each in self-financing B.Com. Commerce and B.Com. with Computer Applications.

Programme groupSanctioned strength per course
Aided B.A. English Literature, B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry40 each
Aided B.Com. Co-operation, B.Sc. Computer Science50 each
Aided B.Sc. Electronics and Communication Systems30
Self-financing B.Com. Commerce, B.Com. with Computer Applications100 each
Self-financing B.Com. Professional Accounting, BCA, B.Sc. IT, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Physical Education, B.Sc. AI and ML50 each

Those course lines total 790, which is exactly what the college filed as its undergraduate sanction for 2022-23 and 2023-24 before it rose to 840 for 2024-25, against a postgraduate sanction held at 160. Two government records agreeing on a number is rare enough to note, though the register has not caught up with the rise. Intake is not filling to sanction either: the same return records 557 first-year undergraduates admitted in 2022-23 against 790 places, and 134 postgraduates against 160. A seat here is available in a way the 2019-20 demand ratios would not have predicted.

One caution before you plan around any single line of that table. The college's own programme page prints a different intake for several of the same courses, listing 60 for aided B.Com. Co-operation and 40 for B.Sc. Electronics and Communication Systems where the register sanctions 50 and 30. It runs the other way as well: self-financing B.Com. Commerce and B.Com. with Computer Applications are sanctioned at 100 each on the register but listed at 60 each by the college. The register is the sanctioned figure the state approved; the programme page is what the college currently says it seats. Where the two disagree, ask the subject coordinator which one applies to the year you are applying in.

Rankings

Read across the five parameters and the fall makes sense. Research is what carried this college into the list and research is what has been giving way.

20237154.2454.7995.2560.798.8919.41
Ranking data, year by year: the 2023, 2024 and 2025 college tables.

Research and professional practice fell from 95.25 to 81.84 across those two cycles, and teaching, learning and resources rose from 54.79 to 60.31 without covering the gap. That research score was worth more than the overall rank suggests: on the 2023 table only one college scored above 95.25 on the parameter, while on the 2025 table seven sit above 81.84. Perception fell by half and has come back past where it started. Graduation outcomes did not move enough to matter.

The parameter that never moves is the one worth pausing on. Outreach and inclusivity was scored at 8.89 in 2023, 8.08 in 2024 and 7.98 in 2025, and on the latest table no other college in the hundred is scored below 33.52 on it. That parameter reads the gender balance, the regional and social mix and the provision made for disabled students, and this college files a return with no women in it at all. Gender is only one of those heads, though, and the others pull the same way. The return behind the 2025 score counts 1,622 of its 1,631 undergraduates from within Tamil Nadu, nine from outside the state, none from outside the country and 53 classed as economically backward, and its answers on disabled access sit under the 40% mark on both lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets. A single-sex, single-state, overwhelmingly local intake scores near the floor on a parameter built to reward the opposite, and no improvement in the classroom will move it.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The library is the substantial piece. The 2019-20 report counts 89,460 text books and 4,410 reference books, 90 print journals, 57 e-journals and four digital databases, on a system the college describes as partially automated in house since 2008. On the computing side the same report records 463 computers, a 200 Mbps leased line, 34 ICT-enabled classrooms and a single smart classroom, and notes a fitness centre built and the playgrounds renovated that year.

Residence is a real part of campus life rather than an overflow option. The college's 2017-18 annual report states that 666 of its 2,256 students were staying in the hostel. The same report describes daily prayers and weekly bhajans with spiritual talks as part of the academic programme, and NSS, NCC and sports as compulsory Part-IV components for every undergraduate in both wings. Applicants who want a low-commitment campus should read that as written.

On disabled access the college's own return is candid, and what it discloses is thin. Fewer than 40% of its buildings have a lift or a ramp, and the figure it gives for accessible toilets is the same. It does record wheelchairs, and transport between one building and the next. A disabled applicant should visit before accepting a seat and confirm which buildings their own timetable would use.

Faculty

Two things stand out at once on the staff list. The doctorate is close to universal here, and people do not leave. The latest return names 118 faculty members, of whom 99 hold a Ph.D., 85 are Assistant Professors and 30 are Associate Professors, and 116 of the 118 are on regular rather than contractual terms. Joining dates on that list run back to 1990, and a good number of the Associate Professors have been at this college for more than 25 years. Every one of the 118 is recorded as male.

The research output behind the ranking score is concentrated rather than spread. In 2019-20 the departments reported 49 international journal papers in Mathematics, 29 in Physics, 11 in Chemistry and eight in Cooperation, and 15 doctorates awarded across English, Mathematics, Physics, Electronics and Computer Science. Mathematics alone accounted for close to half the year's papers. A prospective research student should pick the department, not the college.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

The college records a current NAAC grade of A+, the best result of the four assessments it has been through. The three that came before it are set out in its own quality report: B+ at 77.52 in 2003, B at a CGPA of 2.89 in 2009 and A at a CGPA of 3.25 in 2016. That is a climb across four cycles rather than a plateau, and it runs in the opposite direction to the ranking.

Autonomy and affiliation are separate things and both apply here. The college has held autonomous status since 1981 and remains affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, which is the body whose degree a graduate receives. Recognition of research capacity has come from the central science ministry as well: the quality report records a DST FIST award to the Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry departments in 2014 worth Rs 90,00,000, which is one of the few outside inputs visible behind a research profile of that size.

Scholarships

Most students here are on somebody else's money, and the college's own return says so plainly. Of 1,492 undergraduates the return counts 541 on full state and central reimbursement, 155 on private bodies and 771 on none, and the three lines do not quite total the roll. The postgraduate side leans harder still: against a roll of 232 it enters 114 on government reimbursement, 89 on private support and 27 on none.

The private half of that comes from named trusts rather than from the college. Its 2019-20 report lists support reaching 536 students to the value of Rs 34,25,288 from the national government together with the Sitaram Jindal Foundation, the Kalki Krishnamurthy Foundation, the Nihchal Israni Foundation, Shanthi Social Service, the BCCO Foundation, ICSSR, HDFC Educational Crisis Scholarship Support, Help the Blind Foundation and the Cooperation department's alumni. The college's own institutional support that year was small by comparison, 10 students sharing Rs 50,000. If you need financial help to study here, the route is a government scheme or a trust application, and the college office is the place to ask which trusts are still active.

Student Reviews

We do not publish student ratings for this college. We have no verified first-hand reviews from its students, and we will not reproduce star scores collected by third parties whose sampling we cannot inspect. Talk to current students at the department you are applying to, and ask the questions the government filings cannot answer: what the seat costs, which recruiters actually came to that department last year, and whether the hostel is where you want to spend three years.
