Siksha 'o' Anusandhan
Siksha 'O' Anusandhan is one of the few private deemed universities that ranks inside the national top 25 across several subjects at once, well beyond its founding engineering discipline. In the NIRF 2025 university table it sits 15th, and its dental and law schools finish higher still. For a self-financed university in Bhubaneswar that grew out of a single engineering institute, that spread is the headline fact, and it shapes almost every choice an applicant makes here: which of its ten-odd institutes to enter, and by which entrance test.
Everything below is what SOA publishes about itself, what the University Grants Commission recognises, and what the NIRF tables record, so the university can be weighed on figures rather than brochure language.
Overview
SOA grew out of the Institute of Technical Education and Research, an engineering institute that opened in Bhubaneswar in the mid-1990s and steadily added medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy, agriculture and management around it. The University Grants Commission granted the group Deemed to be University status in 2007, and it has since operated as a single multidisciplinary campus in the Khandagiri and Jagamara belt of the city rather than a scattered affiliating body.
SOA holds an A++ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in the third assessment cycle, the top band of that scale, and the UGC has granted it Category-I graded autonomy, which lets it open new programmes and centres without seeking prior clearance for each one. Those two credentials carry most of its standing, and both matter more here than the usual private-university marketing, because the university is run by its founding society and is entirely self-financed, with its fees set by the institution rather than a state fee committee.
What makes SOA unusual is the range that sits under one deemed-university umbrella. A student here might be reading law two buildings away from an operating theatre in the university's own teaching hospital, and that clustering of a medical college, a dental college and an engineering school on one site is closer to a small health-and-technology township than a conventional single-stream private college.
Courses & Fees
SOA's degrees are organised by constituent institute, and the entrance route depends on the subject rather than the level. Engineering, pharmacy, nursing, agriculture, hotel management and the management and computer-application degrees all admit through the university's own SAAT test, while the MBBS and BDS seats are filled from NEET instead. The per-year tuition below is what the university publishes for its 2026 intake, and engineering fees vary by branch rather than sitting at one flat figure.
| Programme | Institute | Entrance | Annual tuition (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech (Civil / Electrical / Mechanical) | ITER | SAAT | 2,35,000 |
| B.Tech (ECE / EEE) | ITER | SAAT | 2,75,000 |
| B.Tech (CSE / CS and IT) | ITER | SAAT | 3,15,000 |
| B.Tech CSE (AI-ML / Cyber Security / Data Science / IoT) | ITER | SAAT | 3,35,000 |
| M.Tech | ITER | SAAT | 1,70,000 |
| MCA | IBCS | SAAT | 2,10,000 |
| MBA | IBCS | SAAT | 3,90,000 |
A four-year B.Tech therefore runs from roughly nine to thirteen lakh rupees in tuition depending on the branch, before hostel, mess and examination charges. SOA does not list its MBBS, BDS, law, pharmacy, nursing or agriculture tuition on that same page, so treat the engineering and management figures above as the confirmed set and check the admission portal for the health-science numbers before you budget for them.
Admissions
Admission at SOA runs on a clean split that trips up applicants who assume one test opens every door. The Siksha 'O' Anusandhan Admission Test, or SAAT, is the university's own national-level entrance, a multiple-choice paper held each year for B.Tech and its lateral-entry route, M.Tech, the pharmacy, nursing, agriculture, hotel-management, computer-application and management degrees, and the LLM. A candidate may sit SAAT only once per programme in a cycle.
The medical and dental seats do not use SAAT at all. Admission to MBBS, BDS, MD, MS and MDS is through NEET only and is handled by the DGHS counselling machinery, the same route as any other participating institution, so an MBBS aspirant reaches SOA through central and state NEET counselling rather than the university's own test. The SAAT prospectus, eligibility rules and application windows are published on the admission portal, and the admissions office answers at saat2026@soa.ac.in.
Cutoff
SOA fills its SAAT-based seats from a merit list built on the SAAT score, so there is no JoSAA-style opening-and-closing-rank ladder to quote for its engineering or management intake. The effective cutoff is wherever the SAAT rank list stops for each branch in a given year, and the university does not publish those closing ranks as a standing table. We have not found an official SAAT closing-rank archive, so rather than repeat a coaching-site guess, read your own SAAT rank against the branch-wise seat count as the real signal.
The NEET-fed MBBS and BDS seats work the opposite way, because the cutoff is set outside the university entirely. As a deemed university, SOA fills those places through the DGHS-run Medical Counselling Committee rounds for deemed and central universities rather than a state quota, so the closing rank tracks that year's NEET difficulty and the round in which SOA seats clear. Read the counselling authority's own category-wise closing ranks for a firm number.
Placements
SOA runs a central placements cell for its constituent institutes, published at placements.soa.ac.in, and it front-loads recruitment readiness by starting company-specific training in the pre-final year rather than the final semester. The cell lists its recruiter roster and drive updates there.
We are not reproducing a single headline salary figure for SOA here, because the university's consolidated package and placement-rate numbers are not published in a stable, verifiable form we can source cleanly, and the figures floating on aggregator pages disagree with each other by wide margins. Read the official placements portal for the current recruiter list and, for a defensible outcomes proxy, the university's NIRF graduation-outcome sub-score in the Rankings section below, which the ranking process audits.
Seat Matrix
SOA's intake is not gathered into one table. For the SAAT-admitted engineering and management branches it sits inside the SAAT information brochure and each programme's AICTE approval for the year, while the MBBS and BDS seat counts and their category break-up are notified through the NEET counselling process and the National Medical Commission rather than by the university.
The SAAT admission portal is where the SAAT-stream intake is listed, and the medical counselling notifications carry the MBBS and BDS numbers; the binding figure is always the one in the current-year notification.
Rankings
Rankings are where SOA makes its strongest case, and the pattern is worth reading closely rather than taking the single overall number. In NIRF 2025 the university places 25th on the overall list and 15th among universities, but the sharper results are in the professional schools: its dental college is ranked 9th and its law school 10th, both inside the national top ten, with the medical college at 15th and engineering at 22nd.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| University | 15 | 63.14 |
| Overall | 25 | 61.01 |
| Dental | 9 | 63.12 |
| Law | 10 | 65.36 |
| Medical | 15 | 63.73 |
| Engineering | 22 | 62.58 |
| Management | 66 | 50.88 |
| Research | 49 | 45.12 |
The parameter break-up behind the 15th university rank shows where the score comes from. SOA scores highest on graduation outcomes and teaching-and-learning resources, and weakest on research output and peer perception, the usual shape for a strong regional private university whose completion record has run ahead of both its research volume and its national name recognition.
| University parameter (NIRF 2025) | Weighted score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 75.45 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 42.48 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 77.23 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 73.03 |
| Perception | 50.21 |
The gap between a graduation-outcomes score up in the high seventies and research and perception scores down in the forties and fifties is the single most useful thing an applicant can take from this table: the teaching and completion record is verified and strong, while research depth and national reputation are still catching up to it.
Departments
At SOA every subject belongs to a named institute, and finding which one owns yours is the fastest way to read the university. The engineering, medical, dental and law institutes are the four the NIRF tables rank, and the pharmacy, agriculture, nursing, veterinary, hotel-management and business-and-computer institutes fill out the rest of its ten-discipline spread.
| Constituent institute | Broad field | Flagship degrees |
|---|---|---|
| Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER) | Engineering | B.Tech, M.Tech |
| Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital | Medicine | MBBS, MD, MS |
| Institute of Dental Sciences | Dentistry | BDS, MDS |
| SOA National Institute of Law | Law | integrated LLB, LLM |
| School of Pharmaceutical Sciences | Pharmacy | B.Pharm, M.Pharm |
| Institute of Agricultural Sciences | Agriculture | B.Sc, M.Sc |
| Institute of Business and Computer Studies (IBCS) | Management, computing | MBA, MCA, BCA |
| SUM Nursing College | Nursing | B.Sc Nursing |
| School of Hotel Management | Hospitality | BHMCT |
| Institute of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry | Veterinary science | B.V.Sc and A.H. |
The engineering and medical arms carry the heaviest enrolment, and the law and dental schools, small by headcount, are the ones punching above their size in the national tables.
Facilities & Infrastructure
IMS and SUM Hospital, SOA's own teaching hospital, is what most sets its campus apart. It is a multi-specialty facility with NABH accreditation and an NABL-accredited diagnostics laboratory, so the medical and nursing students train against the same benchmarks a mainstream hospital is held to, and the campus carries its own clinical load rather than borrowing a partner hospital's wards.
The engineering and science laboratories, the law and management buildings, a central library and the sports and residential facilities sit around that health block on one site in the Khandagiri and Jagamara belt. Keeping the hospital, the classrooms and the hostels together is the logic behind SOA calling itself a single integrated university rather than a scattered set of colleges.
Hostel
SOA is a residential university and provides separate hostels for its students across the constituent institutes, with mess and transport charged on top of tuition. The university does not publish a single consolidated hostel-fee table alongside its academic fees, and the charges differ by hostel category and occupancy.
We could not confirm a current hostel-fee figure from an official page, so read the hostel and mess heads on the university's fee-structure portal or ask the admissions office directly before you budget for accommodation.
Faculty
SOA's teaching-and-learning-resources score of 75.45 in the NIRF university table is the closest thing to a verified read on its faculty strength, because that parameter weighs faculty numbers, qualifications and the student-teacher ratio the university itself declared to the ranking process. It scores well there, which is a stronger signal than any single headline number.
The name-by-name faculty lists live on each institute's own academic pages rather than in one campus-wide table, so a prospective student who wants to see who teaches a specific programme should start with that institute's page rather than a rounded figure copied onto a profile site.
Notable Alumni
Dipanwit Dashmohapatra, an ITER engineering graduate who became an Odia film actor and played a lead in DAMaN, is the alumnus SOA itself has publicly felicitated, and the one name here we can tie to an official record.
The rest of SOA's alumni base is a working one, built since the 1990s from the doctors, engineers, dentists and lawyers its institutes turn out each year, and a single verifiable name serves a reader better than a list of unsourced ones.
News & Articles
SOA posts its own notifications, foundation-day coverage and ranking announcements to the general-notifications section of its official site, and the SAAT dates, brochure and counselling notices go up on the admission portal as each cycle opens.
Those two feeds carry the dated updates this page does not try to mirror, and between them they cover both the academic-year news and the admission-cycle deadlines a prospective student needs to track.
College Compare
Within Odisha, SOA is the standout private deemed university on the NIRF tables, and the more useful comparison is against the national set of private multidisciplinary universities it now sits among rather than against the state's public universities. Because a private university that is strong in engineering can be weak in medicine, the comparison that tells you anything is subject-by-subject on the matching NIRF list.
SOA's distinguishing trait is that it appears in more than one of those tables at once, and near the top of two of them. When you weigh it against a private university elsewhere in the country, put its dental, law and medical ranks next to that university's own subject standings, and treat its university-category rank as the summary line rather than the whole story.
Contact & Location
SOA's campus and admissions office sit in the Khandagiri and Jagamara area of Bhubaneswar, within the state capital's main education belt. The admission cell is the right first contact for prospective students, and medical and dental queries route through the NEET counselling process rather than this office.
