National Institute Of Pharmaceutical Education And Research (niper) Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Telangana Est. 2007 Official site Updated
NIRF Pharmacy
#5

NIPER Hyderabad had 407 masters students on its roll in its most recent filing, and not one of them was reading for a bachelor's degree. The whole intake is postgraduate: 214 sanctioned masters seats plus a doctoral school of 165 full-time scholars, with a B.Pharm working as the ticket in rather than the degree you walk out with. Entry runs through a single national paper, NIPER JEE, and you cannot sit it without a GPAT, GATE or NET scorecard already in hand.

Overview

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Hyderabad began functioning on 19 October 2007 from the premises of the erstwhile R&D centre of IDPL at Balanagar, and it still occupies that site, per the institute's about page. It answers to the Department of Pharmaceuticals in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, so no state government and no university affiliates it. Its parent statute is the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Act, 1998, No. 13 of 1998, amended by No. 19 of 2007, both listed with their gazette registration numbers on the institute's NIPER Act page.

Six new NIPERs were created in 2007 and this is one of them. The Balanagar campus covers 1,01,000 sq ft including a 4,000 sq ft auditorium, according to the institute's at a glance page. That is a small footprint by the standards of a national institute, and the shape of the place follows from it: a central instrumentation block and laboratories rather than sprawling academic buildings, with the hostels off the campus altogether.

Where the campus sits matters more here than how large it is. Telangana holds nearly 200 bulk drug and intermediate manufacturing units and 400 formulation units, about 35% of the US-FDA-approved facilities in India are in the state, and most of that industry is clustered within a 60 km radius of Hyderabad, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. The same brochure calls the city the bulk drug capital of India, which is the practical argument for reading pharmaceutics at Balanagar rather than somewhere with a bigger campus.

Six sibling institutes carry almost the same name, at Mohali, Guwahati, Raebareli, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Hajipur, and they run different disciplines, different seat counts and different vacancy patterns. A fee table, a seat count or a cutoff copied from one of them will not describe Balanagar.

Courses & Fees

Ten masters programmes took seats at Hyderabad in the 2026-27 cycle, spread across three degree families, and a doctoral programme sits above them. The published seat matrix for NIPER JEE 2026 gives the discipline-wise count.

Total210

Every masters programme runs two years, and the degree needs a minimum of 80 credits of which at least 40 must come from project work, rising to 94 credits for the M.B.A. (Pharm.), per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. Attendance below 75% in a course bars you from its end-semester examination, and a CGPA under 6.00 puts your fellowship on hold, so the academic conditions are tighter than the fee alone suggests.

The fee is published head by head in the same brochure rather than as a single annual figure, and the M.B.A. is priced on a different scale from the science masters. Read the two tables as a pair.

Fee head, M.S. (Pharm.) / M.Tech.General, OBC, EWSSC, ST
Admission fee, one time₹5,000₹5,000
Alumni fund, one time₹8,500₹8,500
Refundable security, one time₹27,500₹27,500
Placement fee, one time₹4,000₹4,000
Tuition fee, per semester₹26,022Nil
Laboratory fee, per semester₹11,483₹11,483
Payable before admission, semester one₹1,05,663₹79,641
Payable each later semester₹57,167₹31,145
Fee head, M.B.A. (Pharm.)General, OBC, EWSSC, ST
Tuition fee, per semester₹1,11,968Nil
Payable before admission, semester one₹1,81,195₹69,227
Payable each later semester₹1,28,699₹16,731

Two lines in those tables change the arithmetic for a lot of families. Tuition is nil for SC and ST candidates at both levels, which is why the M.B.A. bill falls from ₹1,81,195 to ₹69,227 in the first semester. And the hostel admission, hostel rent and electricity heads are only charged if you take a room, so a day scholar pays less than the totals printed above.

Doctoral fees follow the same shape in a separate document. A Ph.D. candidate pays ₹1,22,367 before admission and ₹71,705 each later semester, or ₹96,345 and ₹45,683 in the SC and ST columns, with thesis evaluation charges extra at submission, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Ph.D. information brochure.

Admissions

Admission is not decided at Balanagar. NIPER JEE is a joint examination organised for all seven NIPERs by NIPER Mohali, and a candidate applies once, sits one computer-based test and then chooses institutes and disciplines during a common online counselling, as set out on the NIPER JEE 2026 portal. Nothing on the Hyderabad website substitutes for that process.

The eligibility bar has two independent parts, and applicants routinely clear one and fail the other. You need a qualifying degree with at least 60% in aggregate or a CGPA of 6.75 on a 10-point scale, relaxed to 55% or 6.25 for SC and ST candidates and to 50% or 5.75 for candidates with benchmark disabilities. Separately, you must already hold a valid GPAT, GATE, NET or comparable national fellowship scorecard, and that requirement is waived only for holders of B.V.Sc., M.B.B.S., B.A.M.S. or B.D.S. degrees, foreign nationals and sponsored candidates. Both conditions are stated in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure.

The 2026 cycle ran to a published calendar, which is the best guide to what the 2027 one will look like.

The paper is a single common test for every masters programme. It carries 200 multiple-choice questions across 150 minutes without a break: Section A has 80 questions on general English, aptitude, reasoning and general knowledge, and Section B has 120 questions drawn mainly from the B.Pharm syllabus. Each question is worth 0.5 marks and each wrong answer costs 0.125, with nothing added or deducted for a blank, in the Masters information brochure. A wrong answer costs a quarter of what a right one pays, which is unusually forgiving as negative marking goes, so on a question you have narrowed at all a blank is rarely the better play.

Applying costs ₹4,000 for general, OBC, EWS and PwBD candidates and ₹2,000 for SC and ST candidates at masters level, per the Masters information brochure, rising to ₹5,000 and ₹2,500 for the doctoral paper in the Ph.D. brochure. The test ran at 20 cities in 2026, Hyderabad among them, so a Telangana candidate is unlikely to travel.

One route inside NIPER JEE works differently. The M.B.A. (Pharm.) seat is awarded on a combined score of 85% from the written test and 15% from a group discussion and personal interview, and that discussion has to be attended in person at NIPER with no travel allowance paid, in the Masters information brochure. A candidate who pays the fee and takes a provisional M.B.A. allotment is then not permitted to enter the counselling for the M.S., M.Pharm. and M.Tech. seats, in the NIPER JEE results public notice, so that choice is made once rather than kept open.

Do check dates against the NIPER JEE site rather than the institute's own admissions page, which still carries the 2022 information brochures and a NIPER JEE 2022 heading, on the NIPER Hyderabad admissions page.

Cutoff

There is no published closing rank or qualifying score for NIPER Hyderabad, and no honest page can print one. The 2026 brochure sets out the marking scheme and a tie-breaking ladder that runs from the Section B score down to application number, but it prints no minimum qualifying mark, and seats are allotted strictly on rank order during counselling. Any category-wise cutoff table you meet elsewhere is somebody's estimate, not a NIPER document.

What the counselling office does publish, phase by phase, is the vacant seat matrix, and that trail is a far better guide to how deep the competition ran. NIPER Hyderabad's own vacancies over the 2026 counselling read like this.

Counselling stageNIPER Hyderabad seats still vacantWhich seats
Going into phase II23At least one in every M.S. and M.Tech. discipline the institute was offering
Going into phase III3Medicinal Chemistry, Biopharmaceuticals and Process Chemistry, every one of them an ST seat
Going into phase IVNone listedHyderabad does not appear on the phase IV matrix at all

The middle row is worth more than any estimated cutoff. Once the general, OBC and EWS queues at Hyderabad had cleared, what remained was three ST seats in three different laboratories, which is what a category-blind reading of a rank list hides from you.

The last row is the single most useful admission fact about this institute. The phase IV matrix carries a block for Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hajipur, Kolkata, Mohali and Raebareli. Hyderabad has no block on it at all. Every other NIPER was still on the vacancy sheet at that stage and this one had finished, which tells a candidate holding a Hyderabad preference to convert it in the early phases rather than wait for a later round to open up.

Scale gives the rest of the picture. The merit list published for the M.S., M.Pharm. and M.Tech. counselling after the June computer-based test ran to 3,680 ranked candidates across all seven institutes, in Annexure 1A of the NIPER JEE 2026 result. Neither of the later rounds narrowed that field: the phase III notice and the phase IV notice each admitted all ranks up to 3680. They were competing for every non-M.B.A. seat at every NIPER, and only a slice of that pool could be seated at Hyderabad.

Placements

The most recent number the institute has filed with a government body is a median salary of ₹6,68,000 for the 2024-25 graduating cohort, in the NIRF 2026 data submission it publishes on its own site. That is a median for placed postgraduates, not an average and not a highest package, and it is the figure worth planning around.

Graduating yearGraduated in stipulated timePlacedMedian salaryWent to higher studies
2022-23183155₹6,00,00028
2023-24179165₹6,20,00014
2024-25189171₹6,68,00015

Two things move together in that table: the placed count rises in every cycle, 155 then 165 then 171, and the median rises with it, in the NIRF 2026 data submission. A longer view complicates the story. The institute's NIRF 2025 data submission records a median of ₹8,85,000 for the 2021-22 cohort, so the recent rise is a climb back from a drop rather than a new high. The number leaving for further study collapsed over the same stretch, from 28 to 14, and has stayed at that level since.

The institute's own two claims about placement rate do not agree with each other, and the NIRF table settles it. Its top recruiters page says students have been placed at over 80% every year; the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure says 90% to 100% get placed through campus placements. Divide the placed column above by the graduating column and all three cycles clear the 80% claim comfortably, while the earliest of them falls short of the brochure's floor, so the recruiters page is the safer number to plan on.

That recruiters page names Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma, Biocon, Biological E Limited, Novartis, Pfizer, Sun Pharma, Natco Pharma, Neuland Laboratories, Hetero Drugs, Mylan, Lupin, Mankind Pharma, GSK India, AstraZeneca, Perkin Elmer, TCS and Indegene. The brochure adds Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, Roche Pharma, Ferring, Syngene, Cipla, Macleods Pharmaceuticals, Sai Life Sciences and Freyr Solutions to the roll, which is what a Balanagar address buys: most of that list manufactures within driving distance.

One exclusion is easy to miss and costs money. Candidates admitted on a government or industry sponsorship are given no placement assistance at all, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure, because they are expected to return to the employer who released them.

Seat Matrix

The 2026-27 masters intake at Hyderabad was fixed at 210 seats, the largest of the seven NIPERs after Mohali, with the category split published discipline by discipline before counselling opened.

DisciplineTotalURSCSTOBCEWS

Seats for candidates with benchmark disabilities sit over and above that grid, at 8 with fellowship and 2 without, in the same matrix. A further 5% of seats is reserved over and above for candidates sponsored by government departments, research organisations, public sector undertakings or established pharmaceutical firms, and another 5% for foreign nationals and OCI or PIO candidates, per the Masters information brochure.

Doctoral intake is much smaller and is split by who pays for it. The 2026 doctoral matrix gave Hyderabad 6 institute-funded seats, in Biopharmaceuticals, Pharmaceutical Technology (Process Chemistry) and Medical Devices, plus 4 project-funded seats in Biopharmaceuticals and Pharmaceutics tied to fixed durations, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Ph.D. seat matrix.

Sanctioned strength and the counselling matrix are different numbers, and mixing them is the most common error on pages about this institute. The institute reported a sanctioned postgraduate intake of 214 seats for 2024-25 and 193 for 2023-24 in its NIRF 2026 data submission, while what the counselling actually offered is the 210 in the seat matrix above.

Rankings

NIPER Hyderabad stands 5th in the Pharmacy table of the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025 with an overall score of 75.64, ahead of every other NIPER, in the NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking. Only Jamia Hamdard, BITS Pilani, Panjab University and the JSS College of Pharmacy at Ooty sit above it.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Teaching, Learning and Resources73.77
Research and Professional Practice74.10
Graduation Outcomes90.50
Outreach and Inclusivity69.99
Perception61.78
Overall75.64

The shape of that profile says something the headline rank does not. Graduation Outcomes at 90.50 is the institute's strongest parameter by a wide margin, which fits a place where students finish on time and get placed. Perception at 61.78 is its weakest, and perception is the one parameter built from what employers and academics say rather than from what the institute files, so a well-run institute with a low public profile scores exactly this way.

Where the seven NIPERs landed in the same 2025 table is worth keeping in view when you set counselling preferences.

You will see a claim of 2nd rank in NIPER literature, and it is not wrong, only older: the 2026 brochure quotes the institute's NIRF 2024 position, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. The 2025 table is the most recent one published in the Pharmacy category.

Departments

Nine academic departments carry the teaching, and the map from department to degree is not one to one, on the institute's academic departments page: Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacoinformatics, Medical Devices, Natural Products, Regulatory Affairs and Pharmaceutical Management. Chemical Sciences runs two, the M.S. (Pharm.) in Medicinal Chemistry from 2007 and the M.Tech. in Process Chemistry from 2013, and Biological Sciences runs Pharmacology and Toxicology alongside Regulatory Toxicology.

Two of those departments arrived late and changed what the institute is. Pharmaceutical Management opened its M.B.A. (Pharm.) in 2012, which is why an institute of pharmaceutical research also runs a management degree, and Medical Devices was created in December 2020 to work on affordable diagnostics, lateral flow devices, microfluidics and biosensors, on the same page.

A discipline being taught is not the same as a discipline admitting, and at Balanagar two of them were not. Regulatory Affairs and Regulatory Toxicology both appear on that departments page and neither took a seat in the masters matrix published for the last admission round, while Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacoinformatics, Process Chemistry, Medical Devices, Biopharmaceuticals and Pharmaceutical Management all took one, in the NIPER JEE seat matrix for masters programmes. Read the current year's matrix, not the departments page, before you set your heart on a discipline.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The central instrumentation laboratory is what the institute spends its money on, and the equipment list reads like a contract research organisation: NMR, LC-MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS, HPLC and preparative HPLC, UPLC, FT-IR, FE-SEM, a spray dryer, an ultracentrifuge, a particle size and zeta analyser, DSC, TGA, powder XRD, a rheometer and a confocal laser scanning microscope, listed in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. Alongside it sit an animal house, a cell culture laboratory and BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities used for cancer nanobiology, drug screening and vaccine characterisation work.

The spending is visible in the accounts rather than only in the prospectus. The institute reported capital expenditure of ₹4,83,17,817 on new laboratory equipment and ₹2,01,01,226 on the library in 2024-25 alone, in its NIRF 2026 data submission.

FacilityWhat is there
Library6,655 copies of textbooks, 9,846 copies of old research journals, 1,972 copies of old chemical and biological abstracts covering 1907 to 1993
Current periodicals19 national scientific journals, 10 magazines, 15 newspapers, plus the Reaxys online database
AuditoriumAir-conditioned, seats around 300
NetworkNational Knowledge Network connectivity at 100 Mbps
ComputingLaboratory of Molecular Modeling and Design, set up in September 2009
Animal houseQuarantine facility registered with CPCSEA

On accessibility the institute's own documents disagree, and the disagreement runs the wrong way. Its facilities page says ramps, lifts, walking aids and special washrooms are provided across both the campus and the hostels. Its two most recent NIRF filings put a lower figure on both, and a falling one: ramps or lifts above the 40% line and specially designed toilets below it in the NIRF 2026 submission, down from a claim of more than 80% for each in the NIRF 2025 submission a year earlier. A candidate with a mobility need should ask which blocks, in writing, before accepting a seat.

Hostel

Hostel here is off-campus by design. Boys and girls are housed in separate blocks at IDPL Township, around 2 km from the Balanagar campus, with a bus running both ways, and the blocks together hold more than 180 students, on the institute's hostels page. Each room takes two students and comes with a cot, a study table, a chair and an almirah, and the mess is run by the students themselves rather than by a contractor.

Hostel chargeMastersPh.D.
Hostel admission, one time₹3,496₹5,162
Hostel rent, per semester₹4,593₹7,654
Electricity, per semester₹5,500₹5,500

A seat does not carry a room with it. Accommodation is given on the availability of rooms and shared occupancy is stated outright, and the Hyderabad section of the brochure adds a restriction the other NIPERs do not: hostel space is limited here, so preference goes to postgraduate students from outside the city, in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. A Hyderabad resident should budget on living at home. If you take no room, the three hostel heads above drop out of your bill entirely.

Faculty

The institute's most recent NIRF filing lists 28 faculty members: 4 professors, 10 associate professors, 6 assistant professors and 8 in other teaching roles, of whom 27 are regular staff and one is visiting, in the NIRF 2026 data submission. Of those 28, 25 hold a doctorate and seven are women.

That bench has thinned. The same institute entered 36 members in its NIRF 2025 data submission a year earlier, so eight teaching posts have gone from the filing while 407 masters students and 165 full-time doctoral scholars remain on the roll, in the NIRF 2026 data submission. Ask a prospective department how many supervisors it currently has and how many scholars each of them is carrying.

Research funding has thinned with it, and the two numbers should be read together. The institute recorded 30 sponsored projects worth ₹3,32,57,790 from 7 funding agencies in 2024-25, against 63 projects worth ₹12,00,65,630 from 19 agencies the year before, in the same submission. Doctoral output moved the other way over the same period, 22 scholars graduating in 2024-25 against 8 in 2023-24. Named leadership, for anyone writing to the institute, is Prof. Shailendra Saraf as Director, Prof. Srinivas Nanduri as Dean and Dr. Jitender Madan as Registrar in charge, on the contact page.

Notable Alumni

NIPER Hyderabad publishes no roll of distinguished graduates, and a list assembled from names that cannot be traced back to Balanagar would be worth nothing. What the institute does publish is an association. The NIPER Hyderabad Alumni Association was established in 2015, its first executive committee was elected at the alumni meet of 28 February 2015 and a second was formed in February 2017, and the serving office bearers and a dedicated alumni portal are listed on the alumni page.

Those office bearers are the only graduates the institute names, and for a prospective student that is enough to start with. Write to one of them about the department you are considering rather than about the institute, because at this size the department is the thing that varies.

News & Articles

Nothing that moved a Hyderabad seat in 2026 was announced at Balanagar. Every notice came from the NIPER JEE office at Mohali, and one of them was a reversal: a technical glitch in the counselling system forced the whole of phase II to be re-run, phase I allotments were left standing only for candidates the re-run did not seat, and admission fees already paid against the cancelled phase II allotments were refunded, in the phase II re-run notice.

Phases III and IV followed within a fortnight of each other and both barred anyone whose seat had already been upgraded in an earlier round, in the phase III notice and the phase IV notice. All of it is posted on the NIPER JEE 2026 portal, which is the page to watch daily once counselling opens.

College Compare

Comparing NIPER Hyderabad against a general pharmacy college is the wrong test, because it takes no undergraduates and runs on a national entrance paper. The comparison that decides real choices is against the other six NIPERs, where the paper, the fee schedule and the ₹12,400 stipend are identical and only the rank, the disciplines and the seat count differ.

Discipline availability decides this more often than rank does. Mohali was the only NIPER that offered Traditional Medicine or Clinical Research, Pharmacy Practice was on offer at Guwahati, Hajipur and Mohali alone, and Process Chemistry ran at Hyderabad and Mohali and nowhere else, in the NIPER JEE 2026 seat matrix for masters programmes. Pharmacoinformatics narrows the field the same way, to Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mohali. For a candidate committed to a discipline, the preference order is written by that matrix long before the ranking table gets a say.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

No NAAC grade and no NBA programme accreditation are on record for NIPER Hyderabad, and that absence is not a gap in its standing. Its authority is statutory rather than accredited: the parent NIPER Act was gazetted on 26 June 1998 and amended in 2007, on the institute's NIPER Act page, and the Institute of National Importance status it confers is described that way on the about page and in the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure. That puts it in the same statutory class as the IITs and AIIMS rather than in the affiliated-college system that NAAC and AICTE were built to regulate.

The one external membership the institute claims is academic rather than regulatory: it lists itself as a member of the Association of Indian Universities and of the Commonwealth Universities, on its at a glance page. That is recognition of the degree, not an audit of the teaching, and it should not be read as one.

One registration does matter for anyone planning laboratory work here. The animal quarantine facility is registered with the Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals under registration number 1548/PO/re/2011/CPCSE-A, on the institute's facilities page, which is what allows pharmacology and toxicology projects to run in-house rather than through an outside lab.

Aid

Scholarships

The main financial support here is not a scholarship you apply for separately. Every Indian candidate admitted to a with-fellowship masters seat receives a stipend of ₹12,400 per month, funded through the Department of Pharmaceuticals, and it holds only while your CGPA stays at 6.00 or above. Fall between 5.50 and 6.00 in any semester and the stipend is withheld until you recover, per the NIPER JEE 2026 Masters information brochure.

Look back at the seat matrix and you will see what that means at Hyderabad: nine of the ten masters programmes are with-fellowship, and only the M.B.A. (Pharm.) is not. M.B.A. students are treated separately, with financial assistance of ₹12,400 per month awarded to the top three performers of the cohort during the second, third and fourth semesters on the basis of the previous semester's merit.

Doctoral scholars draw an institute fellowship funded by the Department of Pharmaceuticals for a maximum of four years, renewable annually, conditional on a CGPA of 6.50 and on giving 8 hours a week of assistance to the institute, in the Ph.D. information brochure. Sponsored candidates and foreign nationals receive no financial assistance from any NIPER.

The nil tuition fee for SC and ST candidates in both fee tables works as a second, silent scholarship, and it is worth more over two years than most named awards.

Voices

Student Reviews

No star rating is shown for NIPER Hyderabad, because none of the scores circulating for it comes from an auditable survey, and a cohort this small makes an unaudited average worthless anyway. The institute publishes no testimonials of its own either, which leaves the alumni association's portal as the only route to a graduate who will speak on the record. For a research masters the question worth asking is narrower than a rating: ask the department you would join how many of its last three cohorts finished inside two years, and who supervised them.
