Gauhati University, Guwahati

Kamrup Metro, Assam Est. 1948 Official site Updated
NIRF Overall
#52

Gauhati University is the oldest university in Northeast India, opened in 1948, and it runs in two directions at once. It teaches its own postgraduate and doctoral students on a large campus at Jalukbari, and it affiliates several hundred colleges that award most of the undergraduate degrees across Assam. That split decides almost every practical question here: your undergraduate seat runs through Assam's centralised Samarth counselling, where a CUET score is now the main way in, your postgraduate seat through the university's own entrance test, and the campus sits 52nd overall in the government's NIRF 2025 ranking. The numbers that follow sit on the university's NIRF 2025 return, on the NIRF category tables, and on Gauhati University's admission notices, and each is linked at the point it is used.

Overview

Gauhati University was established in 1948 as the first university in the Northeast, with the scholar Krishna Kanta Handique as its founding Vice-Chancellor, and it carries the Sanskrit motto Vidyayo Sadhayeta, roughly "achievement through knowledge". It is a public state university, and its role in Assam is unusual for how far it reaches: the Jalukbari campus is essentially a graduate and research institution, while the bachelor's degrees that most school-leavers in the state actually sit for are taught in its affiliated colleges. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council places it at the A+ grade, with a CGPA of 3.32 in its fourth assessment cycle, which is the standing an applicant should weigh alongside the ranking.

The facts that matter most to a prospective student are less about the university's age than about what it teaches directly and what it accredits at arm's length.

Courses & Fees

Where you study a Gauhati University course, and what you pay for it, depends entirely on whether the programme sits on the campus or in an affiliated college. The Jalukbari campus concentrates on postgraduate teaching, with 39 postgraduate departments grouped into faculties of science, arts, commerce, law, and engineering and technology, alongside master's and integrated programmes and a heavy doctoral load. The undergraduate side, by contrast, is spread across the university's network of affiliated colleges, each of which teaches its own degrees under the university's syllabus.

That structure is also why there is no single "Gauhati University fee" to quote. Tuition for an undergraduate seat is set by the affiliated college you join, within the fee norms the Assam government fixes for state colleges, and postgraduate tuition on the campus is the low, state-subsidised rate of a government university rather than a self-financed price. The one campus fee published as a flat figure is the research-admission charge.

Fee headAmountSource
GURET (PhD) application feeRs 1,500 per subjectGauhati University admission portal

For the binding tuition on any specific programme, the number that counts is the one on that college's or department's own admission notice for the year you are joining, not a single campus-wide figure an aggregator prints.

Admissions

There is no single common entrance to Gauhati University; which test you sit is fixed by the level you are entering. Undergraduate admission is centralised for the whole affiliating network through Assam's Samarth admission portal, and it runs in two streams. The main one is CUET-based: you sit the Common University Entrance Test set by the National Testing Agency, enter your score and your college preferences on the Assam Samarth portal, and a seat is allotted to you centrally rather than college by college. Alongside it a non-CUET stream still admits students on their qualifying-exam marks, so a candidate without a CUET score is not shut out. This is the layer most school-leavers are really asking about, since undergraduate intake now moves through this portal rather than through each college office.

Postgraduate admission is where the campus picks its own students, and it does so on its own paper. Master's seats are filled on the Gauhati University Postgraduate Entrance Test, the PGET the university sets and marks itself, so a PG applicant prepares for that exam rather than any state or national common test. Doctoral admission runs through the Gauhati University Research Eligibility Test, GURET, where the final merit is weighted 60% on the test and 40% on departmental counselling, and it is open to candidates holding a postgraduate degree with at least 55% marks, relaxed for reserved categories. So the three levels do not share a gate here: a bachelor's runs through the state CUET counselling, a master's through the PGET, and a PhD through GURET.

Cutoff

There is no fixed Gauhati University cutoff published ahead of a cycle, because each level's merit list is drawn from the test that feeds it. An undergraduate seat closes at whatever the Samarth counselling rounds settle on, a CUET score in the CUET stream or a qualifying-marks bar in the non-CUET one, and because allotment is centralised across the affiliated network, that closing point turns on the exact college and subject you have preferenced rather than one university-wide number. A postgraduate seat closes at a PGET rank fixed department by department, and a doctoral place on a GURET score. Since none of these lists exists until a counselling phase actually allots its seats, any single closing figure quoted before that is a guess, and the dependable move is to track the phase-wise allotment on the official admission portal for the exact programme you want.

Placements

What Gauhati University discloses about jobs and further study lives almost entirely in one document, the data sheet it filed for NIRF 2025, which splits placed, median-pay and higher-study counts out by the length of each degree. Every row here is the class of 2023-24, the newest cohort that filing carries.

Programme band (2023-24)GraduatingPlacedMedian salaryHigher study
UG, three-year12038Rs 4,50,00071
UG, four-year12889Rs 5,35,00026
UG, five-year5819Rs 4,15,00027
PG, two-year1,981405Rs 9,50,5001,213
PG, three-year2120Rs 7,25,0001
PG, five-year integrated5821Rs 4,65,00029

Two things stand out in that table, and both fit a graduate-heavy university. The postgraduate two-year cohort is by far the largest, and it is where the strongest median salary sits, at Rs 9,50,500, yet only 405 of its 1,981 finishers were recorded as placed while 1,213 went on to further study, so the campus reads as a route into research and higher degrees at least as much as into a first job. The undergraduate numbers are far smaller here because the bulk of undergraduate teaching, and therefore of undergraduate outcomes, happens in the affiliated colleges that this campus filing does not cover.

Seat Matrix

Gauhati University does not publish one combined seat matrix for its whole affiliating system; the sanctioned intake below is the approved strength of the programmes taught on the campus itself, as filed with NIRF for 2023-24. The seats in the affiliated colleges are set and filled college by college through the same Samarth counselling.

The two-year postgraduate intake of 1,720 seats dwarfs every undergraduate band on the campus, which is the seat-level version of the same point the placement table makes: this is a university whose own admissions are weighted toward master's study, with the first degree living mostly in its colleges.

Rankings

Gauhati University's national standing reads very differently depending on which table you use, and the honest picture needs all three. It is placed 52nd overall in NIRF 2025 with a score of 55.27, and the shape of that score is lopsided in a way that tells you what the campus is and is not. Its graduation-outcomes score is high and its research and perception scores are low, so the rank is carried by how its students complete and progress rather than by research output or brand recall.

Graduation Outcomes89.46
Teaching, Learning and Resources73.43
Outreach and Inclusivity64.21

Perception9.78

Set beside its real peers the university looks stronger, which is the placing worth holding onto. It rises to 9th among state public universities, the table that measures it against other state-funded institutions rather than the central and private heavyweights, while it sits mid-table in the broad University list.

Departments

The teaching you actually meet on the Jalukbari campus is organised into 39 postgraduate departments spread across faculties of science, arts, commerce, law, and engineering and technology, and this is the layer a postgraduate or doctoral applicant should read most closely, because depth here is a property of the individual department. Alongside the departments the university runs constituent professional units, including a University Law College and an engineering and technology institute, and it teaches distance programmes through its Institute of Distance and Open Learning.

Because the undergraduate degrees sit in the affiliated colleges rather than in these campus departments, the department page you should read depends on your level: a school-leaver is really choosing an affiliated college and its subject, while a master's or PhD applicant is choosing one of these 39 departments directly.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Gauhati University occupies a 650-acre campus at Jalukbari on the western edge of Guwahati, with its departments, central library, laboratories and residential halls inside the single campus rather than scattered across the city. On physical access the NIRF 2025 return is unusually specific for a campus of this age: the university records lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets in more than 80% of its buildings, backed by wheelchairs and transport between blocks for students who need them.

The same filing records that the university has adopted several of the National Education Policy's structural changes, including the multiple entry and exit option, teaching in Indian languages, and courses on the Indian Knowledge System. For a research applicant, the more telling infrastructure is the laboratory and library investment behind the doctoral programmes, which the university funds at the scale a heavy doctoral enrolment requires.

Hostel

Residence at Gauhati University is built around postgraduate halls on the Jalukbari campus, held separately for men and women and allotted alongside a department's PG admission rather than through the affiliated colleges. No single official page pins down each hall's seats, its room rent and its mess rate together in one current list, so a specific hall's vacancy and charge are worth confirming on the university's own hostel notice for the year you join. A rent figure copied onto an aggregator is a starting guess, not the amount you will actually be billed.

Faculty

Gauhati University is, at its core, a postgraduate and research campus, and the clearest verifiable read on its academic depth is its doctoral and research base rather than a single teaching headcount. In its NIRF 2025 filing the university reported 1,205 full-time and 115 part-time PhD scholars on its rolls, and it awarded 485 full-time doctorates in 2023-24 alone. That same return counts 159 sponsored research projects live in 2023-24, drawing funds from 32 separate agencies, and for anyone weighing a master's or a doctorate here that funded-research base tells you more than a bare staff-to-student ratio would. The university does not publish one consolidated teaching-faculty headcount spanning its departments and affiliated colleges, so for the staffing of the department you want, read that department's own page on the university site.

Notable Alumni

Gauhati University's former students reach into politics, science and conservation. Two Chief Ministers of Assam studied here, Sarbananda Sonowal, later a Union minister, and Tarun Gogoi, the state's longest-serving Chief Minister. Its science alumni include Jitendra Nath Goswami, the planetary scientist who served as the chief scientist of India's Chandrayaan-1 lunar mission, and the wildlife biologist Purnima Devi Barman, whose work protecting the greater adjutant stork won her the Whitley Award. The names above are limited to alumni whose link to Gauhati University is on the public record, and the list stops where that record does instead of reaching for filler.
