University Of Mumbai
The University of Mumbai runs four separate online admission portals, one each for undergraduate, postgraduate, part-time and distance programmes, and the first thing an applicant has to get right is which of them their programme uses. The split exists because the institution does two jobs under a single name. It teaches a few thousand students in its own departments and schools at Fort, Kalina, Thane, Kalyan and Ratnagiri, and it examines and awards degrees to a far larger population studying in the colleges affiliated to it along the Maharashtra coast. Almost every figure published under the name Mumbai University describes only the first of those two.
Overview
The university opened in 1857 consequent upon Wood's Education Dispatch, one amongst the first three universities in India, and when Bombay became Mumbai the crest followed: the name changed from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai by a Government of Maharashtra notification published in the Government Gazette dated 4th September, 1996. Teaching arrived later than the founding date suggests. By the university's own account it initially concentrated its efforts on controlling teaching at the undergraduate level and in conducting examinations, and later took up research and the task of imparting instructions at the Post-Graduate level, which is what produced its own departments, beginning with the School of Sociology and Civics and Politics. Examining and teaching have run side by side ever since. A student inside a Kalina department and a student in an affiliated college in Dadar can describe two different institutions and both be right.
Its reach is measured in districts rather than by a campus boundary, and the plainest official evidence of that is where it puts its own offices. It runs a sub-campus down the Konkan coast, started at Ratnagiri on September 05, 1989 to cater to the administrative needs of all the affiliated colleges and institutions of the University of Mumbai located in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, and settled on its own 13 acres at Plot No. P-61, MIDC, Mirjole in 2005. A college there and a college in Kalyan answer to the same examination wing and receive the same degree. The Governor of Maharashtra is its Chancellor, the standard arrangement for a state public university.
Its own academic work is grouped into four faculties, Humanities, Science and Technology, Commerce and Management, and Interdisciplinary Studies, and it teaches from five of its own sites: Fort, Vidyanagari at Kalina, the Thane Sub Campus at Balkum Pada, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Kalyan and the Ratnagiri sub-campus. Its home page leads with a re-accredited A++ grade. That badge has a score and an expiry date behind it, and both sit in the university's ranking filing rather than on the banner.
Courses & Fees
What the University of Mumbai teaches in its own name is narrower and more specialised than the sprawl of subjects its affiliated colleges offer. The four faculties hold the conventional departments, from physics, chemistry, mathematics and life sciences through to Marathi, Urdu, Persian, Sanskrit, linguistics, philosophy, sociology and law, and several of the better-known units are institutes with their own buildings and their own admission notices.
| University unit | What it teaches |
|---|---|
| Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies | The Master of Management Studies and doctoral work in management |
| Alkesh Dinesh Mody Institute for Financial and Management Studies | BMS, M.Sc. Finance, an integrated BMS to MMS route and a B.Com in retail operations management |
| Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy (autonomous) | M.A. and Ph.D. in economics |
| University of Mumbai Law Academy | The university's own law programmes, alongside the Department of Law |
| School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Kalyan Campus | M.Tech. in computer engineering, chemical engineering and artificial intelligence, and M.Sc. in material science |
| Dharmveer Anand Dighe Thane Sub Campus, School of Management Studies and School of Law | The five-year integrated BMS-MMS in management, 60 seats, and the five-year BBA-LL.B. (Hons.), 120 seats |
| Sources: the university's academic units, JBIMS, ADMIFMS, MSEPP, the Kalyan Campus and Thane Sub Campus pages, and the postgraduate admission portal. |
The breadth becomes visible once the admission portal opens. For the 2026-27 cycle the postgraduate portal listed 661 programmes across the university and the colleges it admits for, from M.Tech. branches at Kalyan to postgraduate diplomas in forensic science, blockchain and playback singing.
Fees arrive as circulars rather than as a price list, and they are split by who teaches you. The university publishes one fee structure for its departments, a second for the colleges, a third for the Centre for Distance and Online Education and a fourth for Ph.D. work in departments and colleges; the one covering the unit you actually join is the document that binds you. If your seat is in an affiliated college rather than a university department, the college's own admission notice sets the amount and the university circular covers only the share that reaches the university, which is why a total quoted for "Mumbai University" without naming a college means nothing.
Admissions
Fix the portal before anything else, because the four are not linked to one another and an account on one does not carry across.
| What you are applying for | Where the application lives |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate programmes | muugadmission.samarth.edu.in |
| Postgraduate programmes | muadmission.samarth.edu.in |
| Part-time and certificate courses | mucertificateadm.samarth.edu.in |
| Distance and online programmes through the CDOE | mucdoeadm.samarth.edu.in |
All four run on Samarth, the Ministry of Education's admission platform, so the registration, document upload and merit-list steps look the same even though the eligibility rules and calendars do not. The undergraduate portal is the one most school leavers need, and it is built to seat students in the university's affiliated colleges rather than in a university department, which is the practical answer to what applying to Mumbai University after Class 12 usually means.
Above that layer, entry is decided programme by programme. Some departments admit on a merit list built from qualifying marks and publish it in rounds; the economics school, for instance, worked through an eighth merit list for 2026-27 before its seats settled. The law faculty sets its own test, and the university conducts the LL.M. CET and publishes its result itself. The management seats at JBIMS turn on a MAH-MBA CET, CAT or CMAT score and are then allotted through the CAP Rounds carried out by DTE, Maharashtra rather than by the institute itself; the Thane sub-campus does the same for its integrated management programme, selecting on MH CET Management merit ranking through the CAP rounds. Identify which of those three shapes your programme takes before you register, because they do not share a calendar.
Cutoff
Mumbai issues no single closing rank, so any table headed "University of Mumbai cutoff" has manufactured a figure the university never publishes. Three different kinds of threshold do exist, and exactly one of them will govern your seat.
A department seat closes at whatever qualifying percentage the last admitted candidate held when a merit round ran out of places, which is why the economics school published list after list until its seats filled. A professional seat routed through the state's centralised process closes at a rank in that year's allotment, released round by round by the state authority rather than by the university. A law seat turns on the university's own LL.M. CET score. Not one of those thresholds exists in advance. Each is the by-product of a round that has already closed, so it records last year's competition rather than setting this year's bar. Read the final merit list your exact department or college published last cycle, on that unit's own notice board, and use it to judge whether you are in contention, not to predict a number.
Placements
Placement here is run by the individual department or institute, so there is no single recruitment season and no consolidated brochure. The one place the whole picture is written down is the annual ranking return, which reports, for each programme band, how many students graduated in the minimum stipulated time, how many were placed, the median salary of those placed and how many left for further study. This is the cohort that graduated in 2023-24.
| Programme band | Graduating | Placed | Median salary | Went on to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UG, three-year | 326 | 239 | Rs 8,60,000 | 72 |
| UG, five-year | 60 | 56 | Rs 6,50,000 | 2 |
| PG, one-year | 379 | 328 | Rs 6,00,000 | 39 |
| PG, two-year | 2,716 | 2,641 | Rs 20,00,000 | 75 |
| PG-integrated, five-year | 66 | 51 | Rs 9,50,000 | 9 |
Two things in that table repay a second look. The Rs 20,00,000 median in the two-year postgraduate row is not a one-off: the same filing reports Rs 15,00,000 for the 2021-22 cohort and Rs 18,00,000 for 2022-23 ahead of it, so the line has moved up in each of the three years covered. That band holds the management, finance and technology master's programmes. It is also a figure the university submitted about itself, not the output of an audited third-party survey.
The other is who gets counted. Every row above is a student taught inside a university department or institute. An affiliated college contributes nothing to it, runs its own placement cell and publishes its own numbers, so a Mumbai University degree earned at a college in Thane or Dadar carries that college's record and not this one.
Seat Matrix
Sanctioned intake shows what the university keeps for itself to teach, and the 2023-24 figures lean heavily towards the master's programmes. They also catch the year the undergraduate degree changed shape.
| Programme level | Sanctioned intake, 2023-24 |
|---|---|
| UG, four-year | 380 |
| UG, five-year | 60 |
| PG, one-year | 410 |
| PG, two-year | 2,780 |
| PG-integrated, five-year | 122 |
The three-year undergraduate intake in the same filing runs at 380 seats for 2022-23 and then drops to zero for 2023-24, while the four-year line moves the other way. That is the four-year honours degree replacing the three-year one under the new curriculum. It also accounts for a block of zeros further down the same return, where the four-year programmes report 0 students graduating, 0 placed and a median salary of zero in each of the three years covered: the first four-year cohort had not reached graduation when the filing went in, which is why no four-year row appears in the placement table above.
Enrolment tracks those seats closely rather than overflowing them. The two-year master's programmes held 5,520 students across both years, which is close to two full cohorts of the 2,780 sanctioned seats, so the university broadly fills what it advertises. Inside that band 2,952 are women and 2,568 men, 5,162 come from within Maharashtra, 301 from other states and 57 from outside the country. The largest thing the university teaches with its own staff is majority-women and overwhelmingly local. Category-wise seat breakups are published nowhere centrally; each programme's admission notice on its own portal carries them.
Rankings
Three NIRF 2025 tables carry Mumbai, and each drops it in a different part of the field depending on who it is pooled with.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| State Public University | 12 | 63.55 |
| University | 54 | 52.48 |
| Overall | 92 | 49.80 |
| NIRF prints this institution as Mumbai University under the code IR-O-U-0318, which is the University of Mumbai, and each row above is read from its own 2025 table published by the Ministry of Education: state public universities, universities, Overall. |
On the university table it stood 56th on a score of 48.63 in 2023, slipped to 61st on 49.86 in 2024, then recovered to 54th on 52.48 in 2025. The score has risen in each of those three years even though the rank fell in the middle one, which is the ordinary consequence of a field improving around you.
Break that 52.48 into its five components and the shape of the institution appears.
| University parameter, NIRF 2025 | Score |
|---|---|
| Graduation Outcomes | 88.25 |
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 64.43 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 58.88 |
| Perception | 37.51 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 19.54 |
Graduation outcomes carry the score and research drags it down, 88.25 against 19.54, which is the widest gap between any two parameters on its scorecard. The research figure sits oddly beside the university's own research finances, because the filing records 102 sponsored projects from 54 funding agencies worth Rs 80,84,62,928 in 2023-24, against Rs 32,29,71,435 the year before. Grant money that lands in one year does not turn into papers and citations in the same year, so the parameter is more likely lagging the funding than contradicting it.
For a Maharashtra applicant the comparison that bites is Pune. Savitribai Phule Pune University sits 11th among state public universities on 63.58 to Mumbai's 63.55, three hundredths of a point ahead, and on the all-India university table the order flips: Mumbai's 54th place sits above Pune's 56th on 52.33. Two tables, two winners, and a margin no applicant would ever feel in a classroom. Neither result is a reason to choose a department.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The estate is five sites, and no two of them do the same job. Fort is the historic and administrative seat. Vidyanagari at Kalina in Santacruz East carries most of the science and social-science departments and the main library. The Thane Sub Campus at Balkum Pada was established in 2014, is spread across six acres, and runs a School of Management Studies and a School of Law on intakes of 60 and 120 seats. The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Kalyan is a campus in its own right rather than a wing of Thane, and it is where the M.Tech. and M.Sc. merit lists come from. Ratnagiri is the outlier, an office on the Konkan coast rather than a teaching campus in the Mumbai sense.
The library holds the longest memory of anything on either city campus. In August, 1864, Premchand Roychand provided a donation of Rs. 2,00,000 towards the erection of a Clock tower and Library which was named after his mother Rajabai; the tower rises to a height of 280 feet, took nearly 10 years to build, and the Rajabai Tower Library was opened to the readers in February 1880. Kalina has its own, the Jawaharlal Nehru Library, inaugurated on 18th October, 1976 and built on modular lines with separate stacking and reading rooms for social sciences, pure and applied sciences and humanities. The Rajabai building is a working library that happens to also hold a UNESCO Asia Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation, awarded in 2019. Beyond the libraries the university lists a health centre, a sports complex, a gym khana, a cafeteria, a guest house and virtual classrooms.
Residence is the part where expectations need adjusting. The university publishes eight hostels of its own, five of them at Vidyanagari: the New Girls' Hostel at 144 places, the Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil Boys Hostel at 80, the Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel at 77, the Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve Girls Hostel at 50 and the Pandita Ramabai Girls Hostel at 16. The other three sit in south Mumbai, a daily commute from the Kalina departments: the Madame Bhikaji Rustom Cama Girls' Hostel with 190 places at Nariman Point, and the Jugonnath Sunkersett Hall Hostel with 179 and the International Students Hostel with 123, both at Churchgate. Set those numbers against master's enrolment in the thousands and a hostel place is a separate competition with its own application form and rules, not something the admission letter carries with it. Students at affiliated colleges apply to their own college instead.
The ranking filing also puts sustainability on the record, listing a ban on single-use plastic items, rainwater harvesting by rooftop system, percolation pits, recharge wells and storage tanks, solar panels, comprehensive recycling infrastructure, composting and food-donation programmes.
Hostel
Faculty
505 is the number of faculty members Mumbai entered in its 2025 ranking submission, and that is the whole teaching body of the university proper. Those 505 staff the departments and the institutes; the examination wing behind the same crest serves a college network many times larger. The difference between what Mumbai teaches and what it certifies is legible in that one figure.
Under those 505 sits a much bigger doctoral population. The filing records 2,156 doctoral scholars, all full time and none part time, with doctorates awarded rising from 322 in 2021-22 to 367 in 2022-23 and 428 in 2023-24. Three straight years of growth, at an institution whose research parameter is its lowest score, is the more useful signal if research is why you are here. What the number cannot tell you is whether the supervisor you want has funding or time, and that question is answered on the department's own page, not the university's.

Which office to write to follows from which half of the university you are dealing with. A programme question belongs to the department or institute running it, an application question to the portal handling your level, and an examination or degree question to the university's examination wing, which serves the affiliated colleges as well as the departments. Undergraduate applicants have their own queue: the UG portal publishes ug.admission@mu.ac.in and +91 9137807410 for problems with the application itself, which is a different desk from the college you are applying to.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The A++ on the university's home page is a live grade, not a legacy one, and the terms behind it are in the ranking filing: a CGPA of 3.65 on an accreditation valid from 31 August 2021 to 30 August 2028, awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Seven years is a long window, so a student reading that badge in 2026 is reading a current cycle rather than a lapsed one waiting on reassessment.
The same filing records four commitments that matter more than the grade to anyone entering under the new curriculum. The university reports that it has implemented multiple entry and exit, teaches courses in Indian languages, has introduced courses on the Indian Knowledge System, and has established a grievance redressal cell. Multiple entry and exit is the one to test in practice, because it decides whether a year completed at one affiliated college can be carried to another under the same university.
Aid
Scholarships
Most of the financial help here is government money the university passes through, not an award it funds itself. Its scholarship page sends students to the National Scholarship Portal and Maha DBT first, then lists the university's own much smaller prizes underneath, among them the Award for Blind Student, 2024, the Krishna Kumari Varma Memorial Award 2023 and the President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Read that page as an archive of circulars rather than a live calendar; several of its entries are years old.
How much the state route carries shows up in the ranking return. Across the two-year master's programmes, 3,678 students had their full tuition fee reimbursed from state and central government funds, 1,108 more from institution funds and 85 from private bodies, while 38 students in that reserved and economically backward group received no full reimbursement at all. Category and family income, not merit, decide almost all of it. Settle your Maha DBT eligibility before you budget for a seat, because it will move your real cost further than anything on the university's own prize list.

Student Reviews
No verified student rating for the University of Mumbai is published on this page, and a single score for this institution would be close to meaningless anyway. The ratings that circulate under its name are collected at separate affiliated colleges, spread from Churchgate to Sindhudurg, and then averaged into one figure that describes no real place. A score gathered at a commerce college in Vile Parle says nothing about a physics department at Kalina, and the mean of the two says nothing about either.
What works instead is narrower and slower. Talk to current students in the one department or affiliated college you are actually considering, and read that unit's own merit lists, result notices and placement reports for the last two cycles.

No campus photographs appear here, because none have been sourced from the university's own domain. Mumbai runs its own events photo gallery and video gallery on mu.ac.in, which is where the Fort quadrangle, the Rajabai Tower and the Vidyanagari grounds can be seen as the university itself shows them.
