University Of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Est. 1937 Official site Updated
NIRF Overall
#42

Most students who hold a University of Kerala degree never studied at the university itself. They sat in one of its affiliated colleges across the southern districts of the state, while the campus in Thiruvananthapuram examined them and awarded the degree. That split is the thing to grasp first here: this is a public state university whose own teaching departments run mainly postgraduate and research work, while the undergraduate crowd sits in a large network of affiliated colleges. It is also the 25th-ranked university in the country on NIRF 2025, a stronger position than its modest research and perception scores would suggest. Where a number appears below, its source is named beside it: the university's Facts and Figures page for the department, enrolment and staff counts, and the NIRF 2025 tables for the ranks.

Overview

The University of Kerala began as the University of Travancore, founded in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, who became its first Chancellor, with the then Diwan Sir C. P. Ramaswamy Ayyar as its first Vice-Chancellor. The same history record counts it among the first 16 universities set up in India, and notes that only ten colleges of the erstwhile princely state made up its original affiliating base. It took its present name when the Kerala University Act (Act 14 of 1957) came into force and the University of Travancore was renamed the University of Kerala, widening its jurisdiction across the new linguistic state.

Today it is a state public university re-accredited by NAAC with an A++ grade, governed under the standard Kerala pattern in which the Governor is Chancellor and the state's Education Minister is Pro-Chancellor. What makes it worth reading carefully is not a single headline number but its shape: a compact set of postgraduate and doctoral departments in Thiruvananthapuram sitting on top of a very large affiliating system, so the answer to "how do I get in" depends entirely on which of those two layers you are aiming at.

Courses & Fees

The university teaches on two levels that behave differently. Its own campus departments, organised into sixteen faculties and forty-four departments across eleven schools, concentrate on master's, integrated, MPhil and PhD programmes in the sciences, humanities, social sciences, commerce, management and social work. The undergraduate degrees that carry the university's name are taught almost entirely in its affiliated colleges, which is where the bulk of the enrolment sits.

The affiliated system is broad, and its composition tells you what the university is really made of. The counts below are the officially published breakdown of colleges and institutions under it.

Type of affiliated institutionNumber
Arts and Science colleges92
Teacher Education colleges50
Engineering and Architecture colleges44
Nursing and Pharmacy colleges26
MCA / MBA institutions24
Medical and Dental colleges12
Law colleges6
Homoeopathy and Ayurveda colleges6
Hotel Management institutions4

On fees, a state university is a different animal from a private one. Tuition and special fees for the campus departments and for the affiliated arts and science colleges are set by the university and the state, and they are low by national standards, but they are fixed per programme rather than as one lump sum. The binding figure for any given course is the one printed in the current PG prospectus and the affiliated-college fee notifications, and professional courses at engineering, medical and other self-financing colleges carry their own separate fee structures approved by the state fee committee.

Admissions

Admission to University of Kerala works through three separate doors, and mixing them up is the commonest mistake applicants make. For the campus postgraduate departments, there is no common entrance test: the university runs a centralised single-window allotment in which you register once online, list your programme and college preferences, and are placed by an index mark built from your qualifying-degree marks. Seats are filled over successive allotment phases, with later supplementary and spot rounds and separate provisions for the community and sports quotas, so a place can open in a round after the first.

Undergraduate admission is not handled at the campus at all. You apply to the affiliated arts and science colleges for their UG courses, and for the professional streams the entrance route takes over: engineering, architecture and the medical courses at affiliated colleges admit through KEAM, the state entrance run by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Kerala. Research admission is the third door, through the university's own PhD entrance examination held for its departments. Getting the layer right before you start an application saves you from queuing at the wrong window.

Cutoff

There is no single "University of Kerala cutoff", and any page that quotes one in advance is guessing. For the postgraduate departments, the closing point is an index mark rather than an exam rank, and it is set only when an allotment round is published, differing by subject, by college and by reservation category. A high-demand science or commerce programme at a sought-after college closes far higher than a smaller humanities department, and the figure moves between phases as seats vacate. For the professional courses, the relevant cutoffs are the KEAM closing ranks published by the state entrance authority, not by the university. The honest way to read a cutoff here is to watch the official allotment lists as each round posts, rather than trust a number lifted before the process begins.

Placements

The university runs career-guidance and placement support, but it does not centrally report placement rates or salary bands, so any average- or highest-package figure attached to the University of Kerala name is unverified. That absence is partly a matter of type: a large share of its campus output is postgraduate and doctoral students who move into research, college and university teaching, the civil services and other competitive examinations, and into professional practice, where a campus placement average was never the measure that mattered. For students whose goal is a recruiter salary, the meaningful placement records sit at the individual professional and management colleges affiliated to the university, each of which reports its own outcomes, rather than at the university centre.

Seat Matrix

A consolidated, university-wide seat matrix is not published as one figure, because seats are counted programme by programme and college by college and released in the admission notifications each cycle. What the university does publish is the scale of who is currently enrolled, which is the closest honest proxy for the size of the intake it manages, and it captures the two-layer structure precisely.

Where students studyEnrolment
Campus departments - PhD878
Campus departments - MPhil334
Campus departments - PG1284
Campus departments - Diploma / Certificate / others1138
Affiliated institutions - UG97,411
Affiliated institutions - PG14,769
Affiliated institutions - PhD417

For the exact category-wise seats in any single programme, the binding source is that programme's entry in the current allotment notification, not an aggregate.

Rankings

The University of Kerala's ranking profile is unusually lopsided, and reading its shape tells you more than the headline rank does. In the NIRF 2025 university ranking it is placed 25th with an overall score of 59.05, and its five parameter scores show exactly where the strength and the weakness lie.

NIRF 2025 parameter (University list)Score
Graduation Outcomes94.62
Teaching, Learning and Resources71.19
Outreach and Inclusivity64.07
Perception34.73
Research and Professional Practice29.64

Within that university-list scoring, the graduation-outcomes mark of 94.62 is near the top of the scale and does most of the work, while research and professional practice at 29.64 is the clear drag, the profile of a large teaching-and-affiliating university rather than a research-intensive one. The same institution sits at rank 42 on the combined overall list with a score of 56.26, and among the new state public universities category it is placed 5th nationally with a score of 67.93, which is the fairer peer group to judge it against.

Departments

The campus is where the university does its own teaching, and it is organised into forty-four departments under sixteen faculties and eleven schools, spanning the sciences, the humanities and languages, the social sciences, commerce, management, law and technology. This is a much smaller and more specialised body of students than the affiliating figures suggest: the campus departments together hold a few thousand postgraduate, MPhil and doctoral scholars, against the roughly hundred-thousand-strong undergraduate cohort in the colleges, as the enrolment table above shows.

One department is a landmark in its own right. The Oriental Research Institute and Manuscripts Library at Kariavattom is an Indology department whose holdings run to over 70,000 works in 30,000 copies, mostly palm-leaf manuscripts, tracing back to the manuscript-collection efforts of Travancore's royal house. For a student choosing a subject here, the department is the real unit of the decision, because the campus experience is built inside one of them.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The university is spread across several campuses rather than one, and the two that matter most pull in opposite directions. The Senate House Campus at Palayam in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram occupies 17 acres and holds the administrative and examination machinery, while the Kariavattom Campus on the city's outskirts is the main academic campus at 359 acres, with further campuses at Thycaud, the University Library and the Physical Education wing. That geography is worth knowing before you arrive, because the office you need and the department you study in are often on different campuses.

The library system is a genuine strength, anchored by the University Library and by the manuscript holdings of the Oriental Research Institute at Kariavattom. Alongside the teaching schools and centres, the campuses carry the research laboratories, sports facilities and student-support offices you would expect of an institution of this age. For the current, exact state of any specific facility, the university's own campus pages are the source to check, since infrastructure changes faster than a profile page does.

Hostel

The Kariavattom academic campus is the university's residential base, and hostel accommodation for campus-department students is allotted there separately from academic admission rather than coming attached to a seat. Because places are limited and the allotment process and fees are revised each year, the reliable step is to confirm the current hostel position on the university's official campus pages before assuming a room, rather than treating residence as automatic once a department seat is confirmed.

Faculty

Teaching in the campus departments is carried by a permanent faculty backed by contract and visiting staff, and the university publishes the composition rather than leaving it to guesswork.

Teaching positionNumber
Professor34
Associate Professor45
Assistant Professor89
Faculty on Contract54
Adjunct, Visiting and Emeritus Professor25

These figures cover the university's own departments, not the thousands of teachers employed across the affiliated colleges. Because the single-window allotment places you into one named department rather than the university at large, the teaching strength that bears on your study is that department's own, and each department publishes its staff list on its page.

Notable Alumni

The institution's long history shows in the reach of its alumni, and the documented list spans public life and the sciences. K. R. Narayanan, the tenth President of India, studied here, as did the agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan, a Bharat Ratna associated with India's Green Revolution. The list also carries the theoretical physicist Thanu Padmanabhan, the sound designer and Academy Award winner Resul Pookutty, and Kris Gopalakrishnan, a co-founder of Infosys. That span, from a head of state to a Bharat Ratna agricultural scientist to an Academy Award winner in sound, reflects an institution that has examined and graduated Keralites across public life and the sciences for the better part of a century.
