Savitribai Phule Pune University
Savitribai Phule Pune University does two jobs that get filed under one name. It teaches a few thousand students in its own departments on a 411-acre campus at Ganeshkhind, and it separately examines and certifies a college network across Pune, Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts that its own website counts three different ways. Almost every fee, cutoff and salary figure published for SPPU, or for the older names the university still prints on its own paperwork, belongs to one side of that line. A distance-mode B.A. or B.Com. costs Rs 7,850 for a first year with everything included; a computer engineering seat in an affiliated government college inside the same jurisdiction went in round one of the 2025 state allotment at an MHT-CET score of 98.8943489. Both are real SPPU numbers, and neither tells you anything about the other.
Overview
Start with the jurisdiction, because it is the thing that explains the rest. SPPU covers three districts of Maharashtra: Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar, the last of which its own admission portal now spells Ahilyanagar. That map has shrunk twice. The university was established on 10th February 1949 under the Poona University Act, passed by the Bombay Legislature in 1948, with a jurisdiction extending over 12 districts of Western Maharashtra; the establishment of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, in 1964 cut it to 5 districts, and Dhule and Jalgaon went to North Maharashtra University in August 1990. Everything the university certifies today sits inside what is left.
The names are a second source of confusion, and the university has not settled them itself. Its own history page describes it as formerly known as University of Poona; its circulars are still headed Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly University of Pune, as the fee-structure orders on its document site show; and the state agency that runs its eligibility test uses the same parenthesis. Searches for the old names still land on the same institution, which is why a page carrying a University of Pune fee table and a page carrying an SPPU fee table are often describing the identical circular.
Size is where the university contradicts itself outright, and an applicant should know it before trusting any figure. Its home page says the mission runs through 18 schools consisting of 58 departments and centres; its about page says 46 academic departments and, in the text, about 612 affiliated colleges, while the summary table on that same page says 705 colleges affiliated; its snapshot page says 61 university departments and centres and 629 affiliated colleges. Four department counts, three college counts, all published by the university. The only reliable way to settle whether a particular college carries an SPPU degree is the university's own college and course search, which answers for one named college at a time.
Courses & Fees
Fees split by mode of study, and only one mode has a published price list a candidate can read before applying. Distance-mode programmes are priced in the prospectus the Centre for Distance and Online Education issues each year, and the 2026-27 edition prints the whole amount as a single inclusive figure.
| Programme, distance learning mode | Amount, Maharashtra board or university | Amount, from outside Maharashtra |
|---|---|---|
| B.A. and B.Com., first year | Rs 7,850 | Rs 8,670 |
| M.A., first year | Rs 8,300 | Rs 9,120 |
| M.Com., first year | Rs 8,950 | Rs 9,800 |
| M.B.A., first semester | Rs 18,805 | Rs 20,605 |
Read the inclusion note before comparing that with anything. The same prospectus states the amount includes registration fee, tuition fee, eligibility fee, study material fee, study centre fee and regular examination fee, so no separate examination fee or form is required afterwards. It also caps only one of these programmes: the number of seats for M.B.A. is 360, and for the other programmes there is no upper limit, with the remaining M.B.A. seats after the entrance test filled first come, first served.
Campus programmes are a different document trail. Tuition for the university's own departments is fixed by Vice-Chancellor orders posted to the fee-structure circulars library, where the latest fee order is VC Order PGS/3131, dated 21/07/2026, on the fee structure for various courses. Those orders are scanned notices with no selectable text, so no aggregator can quote them accurately and none of them should be taken on trust. If you are applying to a department, open the order for your course year on that library and read the amount yourself.
What the university teaches under its own roof is broad and skewed towards the master's level. The campus admission portal lists M.Sc. programmes in chemistry, physics, microbiology, virology, geoinformatics, scientific computing and instrumentation science, M.A. programmes running from economics, politics and psychology to Pali, Prakrit, Buddhist studies and Indian logic, five standalone M.Tech. streams plus the five that sit inside the Department of Technology's boards, an LL.M., a Master of Public Health, a Master of Design, and undergraduate entries including B.A. Liberal Arts, a four-year B.Sc. Blended degree and B.Voc. programmes in retail management, manufacturing technology and renewable energy skills. Two of them are not in Pune at all: an Executive M.B.A. at the Nashik sub-centre and a B.Sc. in data science at the Ahilyanagar sub-centre, one for each of the other two districts in the jurisdiction.
Admissions
Three doors lead into SPPU for a taught programme, and they share no calendar, no portal and no eligibility rule.
| Route | Where it is decided | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| A department or sub-centre programme | The university's own online entrance exam and merit list | campus.unipune.ac.in |
| A distance or online programme | Direct enrolment, with an entrance test only for M.B.A. | unipune.ac.in/CDOE |
| A seat in an affiliated college | The college, or the state's centralised admission process | The college's own notice, or the state CET cell |
For the university's own seats, the campus portal runs an Online Entrance Exam and publishes the merit, waiting and admission lists against it, with entrance application forms open for Academic Year 2026-2027 and the instruction to apply before 25 May 2026. Miss that window and the department route is closed until the next intake, whatever an affiliated college may still be advertising.
Doctoral entry sits outside all three, on its own Ph.D. admission portal, which sits on the same board's site as the college search and the scholarship portal rather than on the campus admission system.
The affiliated-college route is the one most Class 12 applicants in Pune, Nashik or Ahilyanagar are actually on, and SPPU does not run it. An arts, science or commerce seat is filled by the college against the university's eligibility rules. A professional seat in engineering, pharmacy or management is filled by the Government of Maharashtra's State Common Entrance Test Cell through its centralised admission process rounds, where the college is listed with a home university and candidates from that university's districts compete in a separate pool from everyone else. For every college inside these three districts, that home university is SPPU. Living in Nashik and applying to a Pune college puts you in the home pool; living in Kolhapur and applying to the same college does not.
Cutoff
There is no SPPU cutoff, and the pages that print one have taken a number from somewhere else. The university's own departments do not publish a closing score at all. They run an entrance exam and then release merit, waiting and admission lists that record who was called, which is a result rather than a threshold you can measure yourself against in advance.
Where real closing numbers exist is in the state allotment for affiliated professional colleges, and they belong to a branch at a named college rather than to the university. Take Government College of Engineering and Research, Avasari Khurd, listed in the 2025-26 round one allotment with Savitribai Phule Pune University as its home university and 60 sanctioned seats in each of computer engineering and civil engineering.
| Branch, same college, CAP round one 2025-26 | Highest home-university allotment, MHT-CET score |
|---|---|
| Computer Engineering | 98.8943489 |
| Civil Engineering | 89.5128900 |
More than nine points of MHT-CET score separate two branches inside one building, in one round, under one university. The same list also runs down to 17.8544822 for a reserved seat for a candidate with a disability in that computer engineering column, which is why a single number can never describe a branch. Read the allotment for your exact college, branch, category and seat type, published round by round by the state cell, and treat last year's list as a rough position check rather than as this year's bar.
Placements
The placement record for the university proper is in the return it files with the Ministry of Education, and it is a modest one. These are the students who finished a programme in the minimum stipulated time in 2023-24, all of them taught inside SPPU departments.
| Programme band, 2023-24 | Graduated on time | Placed | Median salary | Went to higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UG, three-year | 206 | 83 | Rs 2,00,000 | 65 |
| PG, one-year | 23 | 1 | Rs 2,50,000 | 22 |
| PG, two-year | 1644 | 708 | Rs 3,00,000 | 88 |
| PG, three-year | 26 | 26 | Rs 4,20,000 | 0 |
| PG-integrated, five-year | 26 | 18 | Rs 3,00,000 | 8 |
The two-year master's row carries almost the whole cohort, and its direction is the part worth pausing on. The same filing reports the median for that band at Rs 5,00,000 for the batch graduating in 2021-22, then Rs 3,00,000 in 2022-23 and Rs 3,00,000 again in 2023-24, so the figure fell by two lakh across three cycles and has not recovered. Fewer than half the students who finished that band on time were placed at all.
None of this describes an affiliated college. A student at an engineering or management college in Pune sits under a placement cell the university neither runs nor reports on, so the recruiter lists and average packages circulated for those colleges belong to the colleges, and the degree certificate is all their students share with SPPU's own return.
Seat Matrix
Sanctioned intake shows what SPPU keeps for itself to teach, and how lopsided that is towards postgraduate work.
| Programme level | Sanctioned intake, 2023-24 | Students on roll, all years |
|---|---|---|
| UG, three-year | 414 | 739 |
| UG, four-year | 520 | 541 |
| PG, one-year | 30 | 33 |
| PG, two-year | 3207 | 4545 |
| PG, three-year | 0 | 55 |
| PG-integrated | 135 | 307 |
The four-year undergraduate line is the newest entry in that return. It rises from 70 sanctioned seats in 2021-22 to 180 in 2022-23 and 520 in 2023-24 as the four-year degree takes hold, and the same filing reports zeros straight across the four-year placement block for every graduating year it covers, because that first cohort had not finished when the return went in. Nothing about the four-year degree can be judged on outcomes yet.
Category-wise seats are not published as one consolidated matrix. For a department seat the reservation split appears in that programme's admission notice on the campus portal, and for an affiliated professional college it appears in the state cell's seat matrix for the year, which is a separate notification from the allotment list.
Rankings
SPPU appears in three NIRF 2025 tables, and the pool it is measured against moves it by 80 places.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| State Public University | 11 | 63.58 |
| University | 56 | 52.33 |
| Overall | 91 | 49.83 |
The parameter scores explain that spread better than the ranks do, and they split cleanly in two. Graduation outcomes carry SPPU and research drags on it: on the university table it takes 79.40 for graduation outcomes against 39.42 for research and professional practice, with teaching, learning and resources at 51.46, outreach and inclusivity at 50.16 and perception at 41.63. An institution that finishes its students well and publishes modestly is roughly what you would expect of a body whose statutory work is examining a college network rather than running a research institute.
Perception is where the pool shows its hand. The same institution scores 56.35 on perception among state public universities and 16.61 on the Overall table, because the Overall list pools it with the IITs, the IISc and the national institutes and perception is scored relative to that company. A reader comparing SPPU's Overall rank with a private university's University-table rank is comparing two different measurements.
Departments
The teaching side is organised as schools holding departments and centres, and it reaches well past the conventional arts and science list. Alongside chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, botany, zoology, geology, geography and the language departments sit atmospheric sciences, geoinformatics, virology, health sciences, defence and strategic studies, media and communication studies, and the Lalit Kala Kendra, whose music, dance and theatre degrees have their own five-year integrated entry on the campus admission portal.
The Department of Technology is built differently from the rest and is worth understanding before applying to it. It runs industry-University sponsored M.Tech-Ph.D. integrated programs under four technology boards, Chemical and Biotechnology, Computer and Information Technology, Electrical and Electronics Technology and Mechanical and Materials Technology, with sponsoring companies including KPIT Cummins, Zensar, Praj, Thermax, Bharat Forge, Forbes Marshall and Persistent Systems defining the research problems and providing monetary support. A doctoral candidate there is working on a problem an industrial partner has posed, with an academic guide and an industry guide, which is a different proposition from a conventional Ph.D. in a science department on the same campus.
Facilities & Infrastructure
The estate is one large campus rather than a set of city buildings. The 411 acres were allocated in early 1949 on a lease of 999 years, with no premium and a nominal rent of one rupee a year, which is why the university has never had to buy its way out of central Pune. The Main Building at its centre was the residence of the governors of Bombay, built in 1864 when Sir Bartle Frere was Governor and designed by James Trubshawe, with an 80 feet flag tower, and it now holds the Vice-Chancellor's office, the deans' chambers and the four halls where the academic bodies meet.
Jayakar Library is the largest single facility a research student will use. It holds more than 4,50,627 books and journals, extends inter-library loan to colleges, institutions and government agencies, and runs on RFID with a digital library management project alongside its manuscript collection. The glance table on the about page gives a smaller figure for the same collection, another of the university's unreconciled counts.
Day-to-day support is concentrated rather than scattered. The campus health centre runs round the clock with a resident doctor and an ambulance, plus ECG, eye and dental facilities, a fitness and health checkup centre opened in 2002 and a yoga education centre opened the same year on a UGC grant, and the same page lists a Bank of Maharashtra extension counter, a full post office and the walking track laid around the Shivaji statue for the 1999 golden jubilee.
Accessibility on a campus this size has a building half and a distance half. On the building half, SPPU's return claims more than 80% coverage for lifts or ramps and the same for specially designed toilets; on the distance half, it confirms wheelchairs and transport between buildings. That return covers Ganeshkhind, though, and says nothing about the Nashik and Ahilyanagar sub-centres, which are separate sites and have to be asked directly.
Hostel
Residence is the tightest resource on this campus and it is worth planning around rather than assuming. The university runs seven boys' hostels and six girls' hostels providing accommodation to more than 1221 students, alongside a university guest house of more than 34 rooms.
Now set that against enrolment. The master's rolls alone carry 4545 students in the two-year programmes, close to four times every hostel bed the university reports, and those beds also have to cover the undergraduate, integrated and doctoral cohorts. A room is a second competition with its own form, its own allotment and its own rules, and nothing in an admission letter reserves one. The terms are notified through the hostel office's own library in the university's circular search; a student at an affiliated college applies to that college instead, because these beds are for the campus departments.
Faculty
Two numbers describe the teaching body and they count different things. SPPU entered 653 faculty members in its 2025 ranking submission, while its own about page lists 293 teachers in the university departments and its snapshot page lists 334 in the departments against 11018 in the affiliated colleges. The last of those is the one that puts the institution in proportion: the staff who teach under the SPPU name in colleges outnumber the staff on its own campus more than thirty to one.
Doctoral supervision is what a research applicant is actually buying here, and the filing shows that output shrinking fast. SPPU reports 1263 doctoral scholars and not a single part-time one. The degrees those scholars are working towards have thinned out sharply: 478 doctorates awarded in 2021-22, 225 in 2022-23, 183 in 2023-24, which is under half the 2021-22 count two years later.
Sponsored research did not decline in step with that; it lurched. The same filing reports Rs 38,90,95,394 across 60 projects in 2021-22, Rs 7,45,80,443 across 70 projects in 2022-23, and Rs 33,87,21,516 across 128 projects from 53 funding agencies in 2023-24, so the latest year is a recovery from a collapse rather than a new high. A group funded in one of those years was not necessarily funded in the next, which makes the university-wide total close to useless for choosing a supervisor. Ask the one you want what grants they hold now.
Notable Alumni
The alumni lists circulating under the SPPU name mix graduates of the university's own departments with graduates of the hundreds of colleges it examines, and no secondary source separates the two. Naming a person needs a record traceable to the institution that actually awarded the degree, and for a university of this shape that record sits with the department or the college that taught them, not with the university's crest.
News & Articles
Announcements at SPPU are issued as numbered circulars rather than as press posts, and the circular is the binding version. The circular search on the university site is split into separate libraries for approval, affiliation, admission, scholarship, reservation, hostel, finance, eligibility and fee-structure notices, with no examination library among them. Timetables, results and revaluation notices sit on the board of examinations site instead, a different domain from the main one, so anyone searching unipune.ac.in for an exam notice is searching the wrong estate.
The university's static pages age badly next to those circulars, and its own scholarship page proves it. The scholarships page still leads with a freeship circular for 2014-15 and carries nothing newer, running back through 2012-13 and 2011-2012 notices, while the schemes students can actually apply for are being administered elsewhere. Read the dated circular, never the section heading.
College Compare
The comparison a Maharashtra applicant reaches for first is Mumbai, and NIRF 2025 puts almost nothing between them. SPPU is 11th among state public universities on 63.58 while Mumbai University is 12th on 63.55, and on the Overall table SPPU is 91st on 49.83 to Mumbai's 92nd on 49.80; on the all-India university table the order reverses and Mumbai is 54th on 52.48 to SPPU's 56th on 52.33. Two of those three gaps are three hundredths of a point, and none of them should decide where anybody studies.
What does separate them for an applicant is geography, because both are home universities for their own regions in the state's centralised admission process. A candidate from Pune, Nashik or Ahilyanagar competes in the home pool at every affiliated professional college in those three districts and in the outside pool everywhere else in Maharashtra. Choosing between the two universities in the abstract is not the decision; choosing which region's home pool you enter, and then which named college and branch within it, is.
Against the deemed and private universities in Pune itself, the practical difference is who sets your fee. At SPPU the amount for a department seat comes from a Vice-Chancellor's circular and for an affiliated college from that college's approved structure; at a deemed university in the same city, one body sets tuition, runs the entrance test and awards the degree.

Which office answers you follows from which of the three doors you came through. A campus-department query goes to the department itself, or to the PG admissions section on 020-25601260, which the university still lists under the old University of Pune name. A distance query goes to the Centre for Distance and Online Education. Anything about an examination, a result or a degree certificate goes to the board of examinations, which serves the affiliated colleges and the campus alike. If you are enrolled at an affiliated college, write to the college first, because Ganeshkhind will route you straight back to it.

Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The accreditation position needs stating carefully, because the badge on the marketing page and the terms in the filing are not the same thing. The campus admission portal advertises A+ NAAC accreditation. The university's own ranking submission gives the terms behind it: a NAAC accreditation valid from 22-02-2017 to 20-02-2025 at a CGPA of 3.60. That window closed in February 2025. Anyone who needs a live NAAC status for a scholarship, an employer or a foreign application should ask the university for the current certificate rather than reading the grade off an admissions banner.
A second status is stated by the university itself and is not in question. Its 2026-27 distance education prospectus records that it has been awarded Category-I status by the University Grants Commission and has achieved graded autonomy, and the prospectus cover repeats the description on its title page.
SPPU also carries a statewide duty that has nothing to do with its own students. It is the state agency accredited by the UGC to conduct the State Eligibility Test for the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of Goa, the qualification for assistant professor posts across both states, and the same page is explicit that qualifying gives eligibility for the post and not for a junior research fellowship.
Aid
Scholarships
Two separate pots of money reach an SPPU student, and only the smaller one carries the university's name. The SPPU scholarship portal runs six schemes of its own: the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule, Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe, Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Jotirao Phule and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj financial assistance schemes, plus a Swami Vivekanand scheme for students from flood, drought and disaster affected areas.
Assemble the paperwork before the window opens rather than after, because the six schemes ask for different things. All of them want the previous year's marksheet, a bank passbook, a photograph, a signature and an undertaking of 75% attendance; from there they diverge, with an income certificate for the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule and Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe schemes, a caste certificate for the Shahu Maharaj scheme, and a recommendation from the head of department or principal for the Swami Vivekanand scheme.
The bigger pot is the one the ranking return counts, and next to it these six schemes are a rounding error. State and central government reimbursed full tuition for 2376 of the 4545 students on the two-year master's rolls, the same number SPPU records as socially challenged. Institution funds reached 352 students and private bodies 40. More than half the fee question at Ganeshkhind is therefore settled in a government office rather than on campus, so establish your eligibility there before you treat a university scheme as the answer.

Student Reviews
There is no verified student rating for Savitribai Phule Pune University, and a single score would mislead even if one existed. Ratings collected under this name are gathered at separate affiliated colleges spread across three districts and then averaged, so a figure built from a commerce college in Nashik says nothing about a physics department at Ganeshkhind.
What works instead is to drop down to the unit you would actually join. Confirm on the university's own college and course search that the college really carries an SPPU degree for the course you want, then judge that single unit on its own merit lists, result notices and the students you can reach who are already in it.

Nothing on this page is a photograph, and SPPU's own pictures stay where the university published them. The Main Building, the campus map and the Ganeshkhind grounds are described and shown on its about-campus page, which is the version it stands behind.
