Kasturba Medical College, Manipal

#10

Kasturba Medical College, Manipal opened its doors in 1953 as the country's first self-financing medical college, a private venture at a time when most Indian medical seats were funded from the state exchequer. Seven decades on, it holds rank 10 in the NIRF 2025 Medical list on a score of 68.05 and teaches an MBBS class of 250 beside a large postgraduate cohort. This page lays out what a seat here actually costs, how the NEET route into it works, and where the college stands on the numbers it submits to the government.

One thing to fix at the start: there are two Kasturba Medical Colleges under the same parent, and they are not interchangeable. This page is about the Manipal campus in Udupi district. Its sibling, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, is a separate college down the coast with its own intake and a different NIRF standing.

Overview

Kasturba Medical College is a constituent college of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), the deemed-to-be university that grants its degrees. That relationship is the single most important fact about how admission, fees and governance work here, because KMC does not admit or certify on its own authority. The college itself is recognised by the National Medical Commission, the statutory regulator that succeeded the Medical Council of India, and it is a private, self-financing institution rather than a government college subsidised from the state exchequer.

The teaching runs on a genuinely large clinical base. Kasturba Hospital, the college's attached teaching hospital, carried 1,838 beds and averaged 3,251 outpatient attendances a day in 2023, which is the kind of patient volume that decides how much a clinical undergraduate actually sees before graduating. Across all years the college taught 1,250 undergraduate and 731 postgraduate students, a spread that leans heavily on residents and makes the wards a working hospital first and a lecture hall second.

Courses & Fees

The anchor programme is the 5.5-year MBBS, which folds in the compulsory rotating internship. Around it sits a postgraduate block of 36 MD and MS specialisations plus super-speciality DM and MCh training, and a set of MSc programmes in areas such as clinical embryology and forensic science.

Fees are the part prospective students most often underestimate, so here are the published figures for the 2026-27 intake rather than a rounded guess. A general-category MBBS student pays a course total of Rs 71,00,500, with the first-year installment set at Rs 17,83,000 that already folds in a refundable Rs 10,000 caution deposit, spread across four yearly installments. The NRI route is quoted in dollars: a first-year installment of US$49,450 against a course total near US$197,200.

Postgraduate fees swing widely by specialty, and the gap is worth seeing before you apply. For general-category candidates the total ranges from Rs 14,74,000 for pre-clinical seats such as MD Anatomy up to Rs 1,01,83,000 for MD Radiodiagnosis, so the branch you match into changes the bill by an order of magnitude.

Admissions

Admission to MBBS runs entirely on NEET-UG. Every candidate, general or NRI, has to qualify NEET before a seat can be allotted, and there is no separate written test the college sets for medicine. Where KMC differs from a state government college is the counselling channel: as a constituent of a deemed-to-be university, its MBBS and BDS seats are filled through the centralised online counselling run by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services, in the deemed and central-universities quota, not through Karnataka state counselling.

Postgraduate entry into the 36 MD and MS specialisations is on NEET-PG rank, again through MCC deemed-university rounds. The practical takeaway for an applicant is that your NEET result and your choices in the MCC rounds decide the outcome here, so the college's own admission page is where you confirm the current cut-off dates and document list before each round.

Cutoff

KMC fills its MBBS seats through MCC's deemed and central-university rounds rather than an open state merit pool, and its high private fee shapes who actually competes for one. That fee thins the applicant field, so a general-category seat here does not close at the razor-thin rank the free government institutes at the top of the table do, even though KMC shares their top-ten billing. No single figure can be quoted honestly: the closing rank resets every cycle, round by round and category by category, and only the MCC allotment data for that year shows the rank at which the last seat went. Read that data for the cycle you are applying in rather than any number a third-party page prints as final.

Placements

In 2022-23 the MBBS cohort of 223 graduates recorded 193 placed and 30 going on to higher studies, at a median salary of Rs 9,50,000. For a medical degree that job-versus-further-study split is the outcome that matters, not a campus-placement percentage in the recruitment sense. The pattern holds across years: 206 of 227 were placed in 2021-22 at a median of Rs 9,20,000.

Postgraduate medians run substantially higher, as you would expect from qualified specialists. The PG median salary was Rs 15,40,000 in 2022-23 and Rs 15,60,000 the year before. Of the 188 who completed a PG programme in 2022-23, 74 took a salaried post, a low figure that is typical of MD and MS cohorts, where many graduates move into super-speciality training or independent practice rather than a salaried role a placement count would capture. Read these as central tendencies, not ceilings, and remember that for most MBBS graduates the real "next step" is a PG entrance rather than a salaried post.

Seat Matrix

The sanctioned intake is stable and large by Indian standards. The college is approved for 250 MBBS seats and 273 postgraduate seats in the most recent submitted year, and the MBBS figure of 250 has held flat across the last several intakes. On top of that the college runs a deep doctoral and super-speciality layer: 151 full-time and 49 part-time PhD scholars alongside its DM and MCh trainees. Category-wise splits for each MCC round are notified separately at counselling time and are not fixed here.

Rankings

KMC Manipal is ranked 10th among medical colleges in NIRF 2025 with an overall score of 68.05. What the sub-scores show is a college that earns its place on research and outcomes rather than perception. Its Graduation Outcomes score of 83.99 and Research and Professional Practice score of 52.84 are the load-bearing components, backed by an Outreach and Inclusivity score of 73.40, while its Perception score of 41.18 trails the government institutes at the very top of the list. For a self-financing college the research weight is the more telling number, because it reflects a funded output the ranking is hard to game on.

Departments

The academic structure follows the standard medical division but at unusual breadth for a single college. Pre-clinical and para-clinical teaching covers Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine. The clinical faculties run the full set, from General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology through to Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anaesthesiology and Radiodiagnosis, each of which admits its own postgraduate residents. The 36 postgraduate specialisations plus DM and MCh super-speciality units are what let the same department teach a first-year MBBS class and supervise a fellowship on the same corridor.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The defining facility is the hospital, not a building count. Kasturba Hospital gives the college 1,838 inpatient beds and a daily outpatient load of 3,251, which is the clinical material a medical course lives or dies on. The college also holds ISO 9001:2015 certification and, unusually, a recognition from the New York State Education Department that eases long-term clinical clerkship placements in New York for its students. Teaching support runs to simulation-based skills stations, anatomy and pathology museums, and departmental laboratories, all set within the wider Manipal university town rather than an isolated campus.

Hostel

The college sits inside the Manipal campus township, and on-campus hostel accommodation is offered to its students through the university's residential system. We could not find a current, itemised schedule of room types and hostel fees on a primary source, so treat the residential charge as separate from the tuition figures above and confirm the exact hostel fee and room category on the official admissions page before you commit, since it changes by block and by year.

Faculty

The NIRF 2025 submission lists 494 faculty members across the pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical departments. Because KMC supervises doctoral scholars and DM and MCh super-speciality trainees alongside its MBBS teaching, that base has to keep senior clinicians in the low-intake specialties, not only the busy ones, which is a heavier staffing demand than an undergraduate-only college carries.

Notable Alumni

KMC Manipal has graduated physicians for over seventy years and many have gone on to visible careers in medicine and public health in India and abroad. We list an alumnus only when the individual's connection to the college is traceable to a reliable published record, and we could not confirm named individuals against such a source at the time of writing, so we leave this section open rather than repeat unverified names that circulate on aggregator sites.

News & Articles

The most recent institution-level development on record is the NIRF 2025 result, which placed the college 10th in the Medical category, the standing this page reports throughout. Beyond that, KMC's dated content is admission-cycle material: prospectus releases, MCC round schedules and result notices. Those live on the official college site, which is the primary source to check for a current notice rather than any third-party tracker that re-posts it late.

College Compare

The most useful comparison for KMC Manipal is with its own sibling. Both carry the KMC name and grant MAHE degrees, yet they sit far apart in the table: Manipal is 10th on a score of 68.05 while Mangalore is 35th on 56.45. The gap is largest on research, where the Manipal campus scores 52.84 against Mangalore's 29.13, which is the clearest signal of where the two diverge despite sharing a name and a parent university. Against the wider field, a rank of 10 puts KMC Manipal among the highest-placed self-financing medical colleges in the country, behind the government AIIMS and older public institutes that dominate the top of the table.

Contact & Location

The postal address is Madhav Nagar, Manipal, and the college occupies part of the education township that gives the surrounding area its name along Karnataka's coastline. The nearest airport and railhead are at Mangaluru, with Udupi town a short drive away. For the current phone numbers, departmental emails and the admissions helpdesk, use the contact page on the official college website, which is kept up to date per admission cycle.
