Miranda House

North, Delhi Est. 1948 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#2

Only one college in India finishes above Miranda House on the government's NIRF 2025 college list, and Miranda House admits women alone. Its degrees are awarded by the University of Delhi, which runs one online admission round for all its colleges, so a CUET score and the University's seat-allocation system decide who gets in, not a college counter. What follows is the practical detail a school-leaver actually needs: the subjects taught here, the fee against each one, how many seats a subject really has, and what the college's rank is built from.

Overview

Miranda House was established in 1948 by the then Vice-Chancellor Sir Maurice Gwyer, as the college's own residence pages record. Its red-brick building, an architectural set-piece with long corridors and an arched-ceiling dining hall, was designed by the architect Walter George. Later buildings kept to that same idiom, so the campus still reads as one heritage block on the University of Delhi's north campus. Today it teaches more than 3,500 women across the humanities, the social sciences and the basic sciences, according to the college's courses page.

The college holds a NAAC A++ grade, the top band the accreditation body awards, and its accreditation and NIRF details also sit in the facts panel and the Accreditation card on this page. Two things set the place apart from a typical affiliated college: it takes women only, and it runs undergraduate research through a dedicated science-education centre, so students meet real lab work well before a master's degree. The sections below take the college one student-question at a time, starting with what you can study and what it costs.

Courses & Fees

Miranda House is an undergraduate-first college with a smaller postgraduate layer. The bulk of its intake is B.A. (Honours) and B.Sc. (Honours), alongside a large B.A. multidisciplinary programme, two multidisciplinary science tracks, and the four-year B.El.Ed. teaching degree. Because the University sets a common fee pattern, the first-year charge is modest and varies mainly by how lab-heavy the course is.

ProgrammeFirst-year fee
B.A. (Honours) subjects and B.A. ProgrammeRs 16,060
B.A. (Honours) GeographyRs 18,580
B.Sc. (Honours) MathematicsRs 18,600
B.Sc. (Honours) Physics, Chemistry, Botany, ZoologyRs 20,100
B.Sc. Life SciencesRs 20,090
B.Sc. Physical Sciences (Computer Science)Rs 19,590
B.El.Ed. (four-year teaching degree)Rs 20,610

The lab science honours cost the most because they carry a laboratory and student-fund component; the arts honours and the B.A. Programme sit at the floor. A few carve-outs matter at admission time: a student with a disability pays a nominal Rs 96, foreign nationals pay a separate registration charge of Rs 15,000, and SC or ST students with no income-tax liability are exempt from the college's tuition and admission heads, all as listed on the fee page. The college also notes the fee is revised from time to time, so treat these as the current published figures rather than a permanent rate.

Admissions

You do not fill a Miranda House form. Admission runs entirely through the University of Delhi's central pipeline, and it has two mandatory steps. First, sit CUET (UG) in the language and domain subjects that match your Class 12 stream and the course you want. Second, register on the University's Common Seat Allocation System, order your programme-plus-college preferences, and let the system allocate a seat by merit and preference over successive rounds. Miranda House appears as one college choice inside that list.

Reservation follows national policy: seats are earmarked for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates, and the category split is fixed per programme. Beyond the CUET route, the college fills a small number of supernumerary seats for excellence in sports and in extra-curricular activity, judged on trials and certificates, not the CUET score. If you are aiming here, the CUET subject mapping is the part to get right early, because a wrong or missing domain paper can make you ineligible for a course no matter how high you score.

Cutoff

Cutoffs at Miranda House are not a single published percentage. Under CUET, the University converts your subject scores into a merit figure and releases college-and-course closing marks round by round on the CSAS portal, so the number that admits you depends on the programme, your category, and how many rounds have run. There is no separate college cutoff to chase and no JEE or NEET involved for its regular courses.

In practice the college's demand keeps those closing marks near the top of the University. The most-subscribed honours, Economics, English, the sciences and Political Science, tend to close first and highest, while smaller-intake subjects such as Sanskrit and Bengali move further down the merit order before they fill. The only authoritative figures are the round-wise lists the University posts each cycle, so check the CSAS cutoff notification for the exact mark against your course and category, not a figure carried over from an earlier year.

Placements

Miranda House is a liberal-arts and science college, not a professional institute, so its outcomes look different from an engineering or management campus. Many students move on to postgraduate study in India and abroad, which is why so much of the alumnae record is academic. For those who recruit off campus, the work is run by a student-facing Placement Cell.

The Cell publishes a roster of organisations that have engaged its students, spanning finance, research, media and the social sector: names on its past-recruiters list include D. E. Shaw, Thomson Reuters, ZS, ICICI Bank, YES Bank, IDBI, Oberoi, Teach For India and several newsrooms and start-ups. The college does not publish an average package or a placement percentage, and we will not invent one; treat the recruiter list as the honest signal of where its students land, and ask the Cell directly for the latest drive.

Seat Matrix

Miranda House publishes a category-wise seat distribution for every undergraduate programme, so you can see exactly how deep a subject's bench is before you rank it. The single largest entry is the B.A. multidisciplinary programme; among the honours, the sciences and the high-demand arts subjects carry the most seats.

ProgrammeSanctioned seats

B.Sc. (Hons) Zoology39
B.Sc. Life Sciences44
B.Sc. Physical Sciences (Computer Science)43

These are the general-round seats; the sports and extra-curricular quotas add a small supernumerary count on top, and each programme's total is further split across the reserved categories in the same distribution. Read the seat count with the fee table above, since the science benches that cost the most are also among the largest.

Rankings

Miranda House holds rank 2 among all colleges in the NIRF 2025 ranking, with an overall score of 83.20. NIRF builds that figure from five weighted parameters, and the breakdown says more about the college than the single rank does.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore
Teaching, Learning and Resources83.48
Research and Professional Practice69.09
Graduation Outcomes88.98
Outreach and Inclusivity84.79
Perception87.30
Overall (Rank 2)83.20

In the NIRF 2025 breakdown, Graduation Outcomes is Miranda House's strongest parameter at 88.98, with Perception just behind at 87.30, while Research and Professional Practice sits well below the rest at 69.09. That order is the college's own signature: the pillar that leads is Graduation Outcomes, the parameter tracking on-time completion and progression to work or further study, not the reputation score. The research-and-practice figure is the clear outlier, which follows for a college whose core work is teaching bachelor's students and which publishes comparatively little, and it is the single biggest drag on the overall figure.

Departments

Teaching is split across two sides. The science side runs five departments, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology, which also feed the multidisciplinary Life Sciences and Physical Sciences tracks. The larger humanities and social sciences side spans departments including Economics, English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Hindi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Geography and Music, several of them among the oldest of their kind in the University, as the departments listing shows.

What distinguishes the science departments here is a research habit built into the undergraduate years. The college runs the D. S. Kothari Centre for Research and Innovation in Science Education, set up with a Department of Science and Technology grant, which gives students structured project work and lab exposure that most bachelor's programmes hold back until postgraduate study. That centre, rather than sheer size, is what the college leans on when it talks about science teaching.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The library is the spine of the campus: fully automated, with a reference section, a Digital Resource Centre of networked machines, and access to online journals and databases through the University's library systems, as the college's facilities page sets out. For an undergraduate college, that digital reach is unusually deep, and it is the practical reason a Miranda student can run a real literature search without leaving north campus.

Beyond the library, the campus carries wi-fi across its sites and connects to the University's servers, and the science block houses the project laboratories tied to the D. S. Kothari Centre. The grounds themselves are part of the offering: the college keeps an arboretum and gardens inside the red-brick quadrangles, which is why so many campus events happen outdoors rather than in a hall.

Hostel

Residence is on-campus, in the college's own heritage red-brick hostel, not a rented block across the city. The hostel is laid out as an aesthetically designed quadrangle around gardens, with a colonial dining hall under a high arched ceiling, and restoration work has kept the red-brick facade and its interiors intact. Day-to-day running sits with resident wardens under the Vice-Principal, and places are decided by the Hostel Committee.

Because seats are finite against an intake of several thousand, a hostel place is competitive and is not automatic with a course seat. Applicants from outside Delhi should read the hostel fee and the current eligibility on the college site early, since residence is where the out-of-city experience of Miranda House is really made.

Faculty

Miranda House does not publish a single faculty-strength figure we can stand behind, so what its teachers do is the clearer measure. In the science departments and the D. S. Kothari Centre they supervise undergraduate project research, work most colleges hold back for postgraduate study, and across the college they carry a full honours teaching load.

Several of those departments have run their honours programmes for decades, and it shows in the depth of the reading lists and the spread of electives. For a specific department's staff and specialisations, the department pages on the official site carry the current names, and those are worth reading before you settle on a subject.

Notable Alumni

Miranda House has one of the strongest alumnae records of any Indian college, weighted heavily toward writing, film, scholarship and public life. The college's own distinguished-alumnae roll names, among many others:

  • Anita Desai, the novelist, awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2014.
  • Mira Nair, the filmmaker behind Monsoon Wedding, awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
  • Urvashi Butalia, who co-founded Kali for Women, India's first feminist publishing house, with fellow Mirandian Ritu Menon, awarded the Padma Shri in 2011.
  • Bina Agarwal, the development economist, awarded the Padma Shri in 2008.

The through-line is worth naming: this is a college whose graduates have shaped Indian letters, cinema, publishing and policy far more than any corporate placement sheet would suggest. If you are choosing between a name-brand professional course and a liberal education here, that record is part of what you are actually buying.

News & Articles

Expertie does not yet run an editorial news feed for Miranda House, so there is no curated timeline to show here yet. The college posts its own admission notices, event circulars and results in the notices area of its official website, and during the admission window the live updates that matter, CUET dates, CSAS rounds and cutoff releases, come from the University of Delhi's admission portal. Check those two sources for anything time-sensitive.

College Compare

On the metric most applicants cite, Miranda House sits at rank 2 on the NIRF 2025 college list, immediately behind Hindu College, and both are colleges of the University of Delhi admitting through the same CUET and CSAS process. For a woman weighing options, the honest comparison set is other top Delhi University colleges rather than institutions in another city or stream, and Lady Shri Ram College is the peer most often held up alongside Miranda for the arts and social sciences.

The decision usually comes down to fit, not rank, because the admission route and the fee pattern are shared across these colleges. Compare them on the things that actually differ: the specific honours seat you can realistically win with your CUET score, whether a subject department is stronger at one college, and whether you want a women-only campus. Use each college's own page and its NIRF standing to make that call.

Contact & Location
