Kirori Mal College

North, Delhi Est. 1954 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#4

Kirori Mal College finished fourth among all colleges in India on the government's NIRF 2025 College ranking, scoring 80.33. Students in Delhi know it by a different measure too: this is the North Campus college whose dramatics society, The Players, sent Amitabh Bachchan, Satish Kaushik and Shakti Kapoor into Hindi cinema. Both facts describe the same place, a co-educational constituent college of the University of Delhi where you are admitted through the university's central system, not at a college gate. Below is the working detail behind both reputations, from the course-wise seat split to the exact route a CUET score takes into a KMC classroom.

Overview

Kirori Mal College, known on campus as KMC, opened in 1951 as Nirmala College and was renamed in 1954 after the industrialist and philanthropist Seth Kirori Mal, whose endowment gave it a permanent home in University Enclave on the North Campus. It is centrally funded and runs as a constituent college of Delhi University: KMC teaches its own students, but degrees, admission and the fee framework sit with the university. Its Sanskrit motto, Vayam Vishwe Jaagriyaam, translates roughly as a call to keep the world exuberant and enlightened.

The college teaches arts, science and commerce under one roof, a mix that is unusual among the specialised North Campus colleges and that shows up in its results. It carries a NAAC accreditation of A++ with a CGPA of 3.54 in the second assessment cycle, among the higher grades held by any Delhi University college. If you are weighing KMC, treat it as a broad-based teaching college with a strong extracurricular spine rather than a single-stream specialist.

Courses & Fees

KMC's teaching is built around full three- and four-year undergraduate degrees, with postgraduate programmes in several departments layered on top. The undergraduate menu spans honours and programme degrees across the three faculties, and every student also takes the general elective, skill-enhancement and value-added courses that the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework requires.

Fees at a Delhi University college are modest and set by the university rather than the college, and KMC does not post a single consolidated figure on an open page. The binding amount is the programme-wise structure the college hosts on its official Fees and Dues page, alongside the common heads listed in Delhi University's Bulletin of Information; download that structure and confirm the exact head-wise total for your programme before you commit, because it is the only figure the college will hold you to. KMC also runs a Fee Concession scheme for students who need financial help, applied for online each session.

Admissions

You cannot walk into KMC and buy a seat: every undergraduate admission is decided by two national systems, and the college keeps no separate quota or management channel of its own. First you sit the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduates, CUET-UG, conducted by the National Testing Agency; your subject scores there are the raw material for every Delhi University seat. Simply taking CUET is not enough on its own.

The seat itself is awarded through Delhi University's Common Seat Allocation System, or CSAS, a single online window at the university admission portal where you list programme-and-college preferences and are then allotted a seat round by round. To land at KMC you have to place it high in your preference order for a programme where your CUET merit clears the cut in that round. Check the programme-specific eligibility in the university's Bulletin of Information before you lock your CUET subjects, since a wrong subject combination can disqualify an otherwise strong score.

Cutoff

KMC does not set or publish a fixed cutoff of its own. Because admission is centralised, the effective cutoff is whatever CUET merit rank the last allotted candidate held when a programme's seats filled in a given CSAS round, and that closing point moves every year and every round. There is no percentage cutoff of the old pre-CUET kind to quote here.

The closing merit differs sharply by programme and by category, and the reserved-category closings sit below the general one because seats are ring-fenced under the reservation quotas shown in the seat matrix below. What matters at KMC is which of its high-demand honours you are chasing: a science-honours or a commerce seat here can reopen at a noticeably different merit between the first allocation and the later upgrade and spot rounds, so track the round-wise CSAS allocation data for your exact programme and category rather than a single headline figure.

Placements

KMC is an undergraduate arts, science and commerce college, so its career support is built around internships, higher-study preparation and campus recruitment rather than the branch-wise placement drives of a professional institute. The college runs a Career Development Centre and a student-facing placement effort branded the Avenues Placement Cell, which coordinates recruiter visits, skill sessions and career counselling.

What the college does not put out is an audited placement report with a median salary or a placement rate, and we will not invent one, so there is no headline number here. What it runs instead is worth knowing: the Avenues placement cell and the Career Development Centre bring recruiters and skill-building sessions onto campus, and the college also operates a Principal KMC Internship Scheme for its students. For a real read on outcomes, ask Avenues for its most recent recruiter list, and weigh the honours degree itself, in Economics, Commerce or a science, as what most graduates carry into a job or a postgraduate programme.

Seat Matrix

KMC's sanctioned undergraduate seats are split across its honours and programme degrees into general, scheduled-caste, scheduled-tribe, other-backward-class and economically-weaker-section quotas, following the standard reservation percentages. The largest single-programme intakes sit in the science honours degrees and commerce, while the language honours courses are deliberately small.

Rankings

The ranking that carries the most weight for KMC is the government's own. In NIRF 2025 it placed 4th in the College category with an overall score of 80.33, and the parameter breakdown explains where that score comes from.

ParameterScore
Overall80.33
Teaching, Learning and Resources86.67
Research and Professional Practice79.65
Graduation Outcomes83.61
Outreach and Inclusivity73.78
Perception54.29

One number stands apart from the rest. On teaching, learning and resources, and on graduation outcomes, the two parameters that track what an enrolled student actually gets, KMC scores strongly; on perception, the survey of how deans and recruiters see it, the college scores far lower. That gap is the real story of its rise: KMC reported ranks of 17th in 2021, 10th in 2022 and 9th in the 2023 India Rankings before reaching 4th in 2025, climbing on measured performance faster than its name recognition has caught up.

Departments

Teaching at KMC is organised department by department across the arts, sciences and commerce, with each department led by a teacher-in-charge. On the science side sit Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science; the arts and humanities carry English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, History, Political Science, Economics, Philosophy and the lab-based Geography; and Commerce anchors the professional stream.

Several departments are large by Delhi University standards, with the college describing Chemistry and Physics as among its biggest and Mathematics among its finest, and each has its own laboratory or resource space. Bengali is taught as a language option, and the departments jointly deliver the general-elective and value-added courses that every undergraduate takes alongside the core degree.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The centre of academic life is the N.S. Pradhan Memorial Library, one of the larger college libraries in Delhi University. It is fully computerised, holds about 1.5 lakh books and seats roughly 350 readers, and subscribes to 52 academic journals along with general magazines and newspapers; a dedicated section with JAWS software, Braille titles and audio material serves visually impaired students.

Beyond the library, the campus runs well-equipped science laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany, plus separate labs for Geography, Computer Science and Statistics, and a fully air-conditioned central computer facility. Everyday student life is supported by a gymnasium, a canteen with lawns, a Punjab National Bank extension counter with ATMs on the premises, a seminar room for workshops and film screenings, and a Wellness Centre that gives students confidential access to a trained counsellor. Medical needs are covered by the college medical officer and enrolment at the university health centre.

Hostel

KMC runs its own residential hostel, a single Wi-Fi-enabled campus kept under round-the-clock CCTV security and laid out around a kitchen, a dining hall, a common room, a reading room and the warden's office. For an outstation student, that in-house accommodation is one of the concrete reasons to rank the college high.

A hostel place is applied for and allotted on its own track, separate from your CUET-driven course admission and typically weighted by merit and home distance, so winning a KMC seat does not carry a room with it. If you will need to stay on campus, start the hostel application the moment your admission is confirmed, and treat the college's own accommodation notices as the reference for the current intake and charges.

Faculty

KMC's teaching staff is organised department by department, with each department run by a teacher-in-charge who leads a mix of permanent and contract faculty. Academic governance runs through the principal, Prof. Dinesh Khattar, supported by a bursar, a proctor and an Internal Quality Assurance Cell convener, with a university-appointed governing body overseeing the college.

The faculty's research and teaching record is a large part of what lifts KMC's NIRF teaching and research parameters, and several departments carry long-serving professors who also examine and set curricula for Delhi University. KMC publishes its teachers under their own departments, many with a downloadable profile, on the research and faculty pages of its website, and that is where a current, qualification-level list lives, since staffing shifts every session.

Notable Alumni

KMC's best-known legacy is on stage and screen, and it traces back to The Players, the college's English-language dramatics society. Its most famous member is Amitabh Bachchan, and the same society and campus produced Satish Kaushik, Shakti Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Vijay Raaz, the late singer KK and the actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, along with filmmakers such as Kabir Khan and Habib Faisal.

The college's reach runs well beyond films. Its alumni include Naveen Patnaik, the long-serving former chief minister of Odisha, Madan Lal Khurana, a former chief minister of Delhi, and Girija Prasad Koirala, a former prime minister of Nepal, alongside Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay, the first woman to reach that rank in the Indian Air Force, the Paralympic medallist Yogesh Kathuniya and the historian Arjun Dev. That spread, from cinema to public office to the armed forces, is a fair picture of what a broad KMC education has led to.

News & Articles

We do not run a live news feed for KMC, and we will post an item here only when it is tied to an official notice, so this section stays deliberately thin. During the admission months the college's own site is where the live action is: it publishes the CSAS admitted-student lists round by round, alongside circulars and results in its news and circulars section, and that is the page to refresh while allocations move.

College Compare

Students most often line KMC up directly against Hansraj, and the honest way to settle that is on breadth. KMC is one of the few colleges near the top of the table that is genuinely strong in the arts, the sciences and commerce at once, so if you are still choosing between, say, a commerce and a science path, it keeps both doors open.

If you already know your single subject, the comparison collapses to one question: which college closes that specific honours programme at the more reachable CUET merit. Read that off each college's own allocation data and its published seat matrix, not its overall NIRF line, because a college a place or two higher overall can still be the weaker home for your particular department.
