Mahatma Gandhi P.g. Institute Of Dental Sciences

Puducherry, Puducherry Est. 1990 Official site Updated
NIRF Dental
#23

Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences is the Government of Puducherry's dental college at Gorimedu, Puducherry, and the only government college among the three BDS colleges CENTAC counsels in the Union Territory. In the first CENTAC round of 2026-2027, all 50 of its self-supporting BDS seats were allotted, and only 7 of those candidates went on to take admission. The other 43 seats, each carrying tuition of Rs 3,50,000 a year, went back into round two.

Despite the "Postgraduate" in the name, undergraduates are the larger body here, 335 BDS students against 51 MDS students in the institute's own ranking return, and both degrees are filled on NEET scores through two counselling queues, CENTAC for Puducherry's share and MCC for the All India share.

Overview

The institute began small and changed its name twice. Its About Us page records that it opened as Pondicherry Dental College in 1990 in a building with only two rooms, became Mahatma Gandhi Dental College and Hospital in 1995, and was upgraded to its present title on 08.09.2005 under G.O.Ms.No.57 of the Government of Pondicherry. The same page says it runs a five-year BDS, including a year of paid compulsory rotatory internship, and three-year MDS courses, and that it is permanently affiliated to Pondicherry University, a Central University.

Legally it is an autonomous body of the Union Territory government rather than a department. A Board of Governors runs it, and the Who's Who page names the Chief Minister of Puducherry as Chairman, the Secretary to Government (Health) as Vice-Chairman, and a nominee of the Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor among the members, with the Dean as Member Secretary.

The old name has not disappeared from national paperwork, and that matters at choice filling. The Medical Counselling Committee's round one BDS seat matrix lists this college as "M.G.D.C. & HOSPITAL, PUDUCHERRY, GOVT. OF PUDUCHERRY INSTITUTION, GORIMEDU, PONDICHERRY" under institute code 200242, while the MDS matrix calls it Mahatma Gandhi PG Institute of Dental Sciences, Puducherry under code 900119. The ranking framework uses a third spelling, Mahatma Gandhi P.G. Institute of Dental Sciences.

Who studies here is recorded in the NIRF 2026 data the institute publishes on its site. Of 335 undergraduates, 254 are women and 81 are men, and 105 come from outside the Union Territory. The postgraduate roll of 51 splits 34 women to 17 men, with 25 from outside.

Courses & Fees

The institute's degree programmes are the BDS and the MDS. The NIRF 2026 data records no PhD student, full time or part time, and no doctorate awarded in any of the three years it covers.

BDS Fees by Quota

The quota on the allotment letter decides which of four BDS bills applies. Puducherry domiciles and All India Quota students share the same annual heads and differ only in the one-time admission fee, which is higher for the All India Quota and is printed on the institute's scanned BDS notice. The self-supporting and NRI seats are priced on a different scale altogether.

Tuition feeRs 21,240Rs 21,240
Special feeRs 9,430Rs 9,430
Library feeRs 5,900Rs 5,900
Laboratory feeRs 9,920Rs 9,920
Caution deposit, onceRs 3,000Rs 3,000
Sources: MGPGIDS BDS fee structure 2026-2027 as published by CENTAC and the institute's notice for BDS admission, fees and contact details.

The smaller heads on that sheet are an identity card at Rs 190, a students' council fee of Rs 700, a sports fee of Rs 220, an alumni fee of Rs 300 and a poor students' welfare fund of Rs 350, per the CENTAC copy of the fee structure. On top of those, the institute's own admission notice says registration, matriculation, recognition and sports fees are paid as Pondicherry University prescribes, examination fees as the university or college prescribes, and BDS tuition goes to the CENTAC account through the payment link in the candidate's dashboard rather than to the college.

The other two seat types cost several times more. A self-supporting seat carries tuition of Rs 3,50,000 per year, and an NRI seat carries an admission fee of US $22,000, payable in dollars once or in four equal instalments, plus tuition of Rs 2,59,390 a year, per the same CENTAC fee structure. The CENTAC copy warns that a self-supporting or NRI student who leaves after the last date of admission gets certificates back only after paying tuition for the remaining years, and the institute's own BDS notice extends the same liability for the remaining years' fees to All India Quota students who fail to join or drop out midway.

MDS Fees by Quota

Postgraduate fees follow the same pattern with larger numbers. The two quotas pay identical annual heads, and their first-year totals, Rs 1,56,685 for a Puducherry domicile and Rs 1,76,685 for the All India Quota, differ only by the one-time admission fee, per the CENTAC copy of the MDS notice. Those totals also include tuition, an identity card and an alumni fee, which are not itemised in the table below.

MDS head, 2026-27Puducherry domicileAll India Quota
Library feeRs 7,780Rs 7,780

Clinical and lab feeRs 12,970Rs 12,970
Sources: MGPGIDS MDS fee structure 2026-2027 as published by CENTAC and the institute's MDS admission notice.

Two lines on the MDS sheet deserve attention before accepting a seat. An All India or state quota student who discontinues after the last date of admission is levied a penalty of Rs 5 lakh, and the single NRI seat costs US $44,000 at admission plus Rs 3,24,225 in tuition every year, per the CENTAC copy of the MDS notice. If that seat converts to self-sustaining mode, the fee becomes whatever Puducherry's fee committee has fixed for self-financing dental institutes.

Admissions

For the BDS, the CENTAC NEET UG brochure shows 106 seats counselled by CENTAC and 19 filled through MCC's All India Quota, the 15% share that government dental colleges surrender to national counselling. The CENTAC share breaks into 51 government quota seats for residents of the Union Territory, 50 self-supporting seats and 5 NRI seats, and unfilled NRI seats are converted to self-supporting ones.

  • All India Quota: register with MCC, which fills these 19 seats on all India rank.
  • Government quota: apply to CENTAC as a resident of the Union Territory of Puducherry. The brochure accepts five years of continuous residence by the candidate or a parent, or schooling for five successive classes in the Union Territory, among other routes.
  • Self-supporting quota: apply to CENTAC. These seats at government colleges are open to Indian citizens and to OCI cardholders whose card was granted before 04.03.2021, per the same brochure.
  • NRI quota: apply to CENTAC as an NRI, OCI, NRI-sponsored or foreign national candidate.

Government quota seats are then divided by region. The brochure's seat table for this college labels the Union Territory share at 75% for Puducherry, 18% for Karaikal, 3% for Yanam and 4% for Mahe, and within those shares 50% of seats are unreserved, with 18% for MBC, 16% for SC, 11% for OBC, 2% each for BCM and EBC and 0.5% each for BT and ST in the Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions, while Mahe reserves 16% for OBC, 10% for BCM and 7% for MBC, per the CENTAC brochure. A further 10% horizontal reservation goes to students who studied in Government of Puducherry schools from Std I to Std XII.

For the MDS, the institute's 2026-2027 notice gives 23 seats: 12 All India seats filled by MCC and 11 filled by CENTAC, of which one is an NRI seat in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, per the CENTAC copy of that notice. If no NRI candidate takes it, the seat becomes a management or self-sustaining seat in the mop-up round and, failing that, a state quota seat for Puducherry domiciles. The Health Secretariat's seat matrix of 23.07.2026 earmarks the one EWS seat to Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, as proposed by the institute.

The institute's standing admission page still describes a 19-seat MDS year split evenly between Puducherry and All India candidates, which predates the 2026-2027 matrix above, so go by the dated notices and CENTAC's files for seat counts. The same page is useful for what the NRI line really delivers: its 2025-2026 BDS table records 54 self-financing or management admissions and only 1 NRI admission.

Cutoff

Two separate cutoffs apply to a BDS seat here, and the two authorities publish them differently: CENTAC as NEET marks by region and category, MCC as an all India rank list.

CENTAC Government Quota, Round One 2026-27

The first-round closing marks for this college's government quota in the Puducherry region ran from 419 for general candidates down to 328 for SC among the vertical categories, per CENTAC's round one cutoff marks.

RegionGeneralOBCMBCSCBCMEBC
Puducherry419410410328418417
Karaikal376376318311--
Mahe393---357-
Yanam402-----

Horizontal quotas in the Puducherry region closed at 308 for freedom fighter wards, 288 for ex-servicemen and 220 for meritorious sports persons, and the NRI quota at this college closed at 253, on the same CENTAC sheet.

Last year's figures need a caveat. CENTAC's 2025-2026 cutoff sheet put the Puducherry general mark for this college at 362 and SC at 258, but that sheet carries no round label while the 2026-2027 figure is round one only, and NEET score distributions shift from year to year.

Who Actually Joined After Round One

Allotment and admission diverged sharply in 2026-2027. CENTAC's round one provisional allotment list placed 47 government quota candidates, 50 self-supporting candidates and 5 NRI candidates at this college. Its round one admitted list shows 25 government quota students and 7 self-supporting students actually admitted, and no NRI admission page for the college at all.

The self-supporting seats were allotted to Other State candidates with NEET all India ranks from 1,06,198 to 2,37,964, and the seven who joined held ranks between 1,63,230 and 2,37,964, per the allotment list and the admitted list. The revised vacancy list of 09-09-2026 carries 43 self-supporting and 5 NRI seats at this college into round two, alongside government quota vacancies of 21 in the Puducherry region, 3 in Karaikal and 2 in Yanam. Any of those government quota seats still unfilled are converted into All India management or self-supporting seats and filled in round three, under the brochure's conversion rules. CENTAC's lists file these self-supporting seats under management quota, and its NEET UG brochure charges a registration fee of Rs 2,00,000 to take part in rounds two and three for management or NRI quota seats, so weigh that deposit as well as the Rs 3,50,000 annual tuition in the BDS fee structure before chasing a vacancy.

MCC All India Quota, Round One 2026

The 19 All India seats are allotted in MCC's NEET-UG round one allotment, a candidate-by-candidate list rather than a closing-rank table that prints the college under its old M.G.D.C. name, so search for that string and read the category column to find the last rank seated in the round you are tracking. For contrast on the CENTAC side, the last Puducherry-region general seat in the round one allotment list went at a score of 419 and all India rank 2,28,649.

MDS Cutoffs

In CENTAC's first round PG dental allotment for 2026-2027, the 10 government quota MDS seats here went to NEET-MDS scores from 709 down to 591, which the list pairs with all India ranks from 144 to 2,027. A Public Health Dentistry seat went to a general candidate scoring 634, and the lowest score allotted, 591, took the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology seat through the SC category.

For the previous year, CENTAC's 2025-2026 PG dental cutoff sheet prints category-wise government quota marks for this college from 443 on an SC seat in Periodontology to 640 on an MBC seat in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, with the general seats at 632 in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and 615 in Oral Pathology, a disability quota seat in Prosthodontics at 275 and the one management quota seat, also in Prosthodontics, at 478. That sheet is built from the final admitted list, while the 2026-2027 figures above come from a first-round allotment.

Placements

The Gorimedu institute's outcome figures come from the return it filed for NIRF 2026, which records a median salary but no highest package and no employer names, and the MDS and BDS columns in it look nothing alike.

Graduating yearGraduatesPlacedMedian salaryHigher studies
BDS 2022-232716Rs 4,00,00011
BDS 2023-243117Rs 5,00,00014

MDS 2023-241212Rs 7,00,0000
MDS 2024-251414Rs 8,50,0000
Every row above is copied from the outcome tables MGPGIDS filed with the ranking framework and posted as NIRF 2026 data.

Every MDS graduate in all three years is recorded as placed. The BDS side is less complete: of 40 students admitted in each of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, 31 graduated in the minimum time, and for the 2024-2025 graduates the return records 17 placed and 4 in higher study, leaving the rest of that batch unaccounted for, per the same return. Those cohorts also predate the 125-seat intake counselled in the CENTAC brochure.

For destinations, the institute's admission page lists dental teaching institutions, the Army Dental Corps, public service commissions and public sector undertakings as recruiters of its graduates, without counts or years.

Seat Matrix

The sanctioned BDS intake in the NIRF 2026 data reads 40 in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, 50 in 2022-2023, 100 in 2023-2024 and 110 in 2024-2025. The 2026-2027 counselling files work from 125, per the CENTAC brochure.

The last two rows are new. CENTAC's own PG dental brochure, issued before the matrix, still lists 19 MDS seats here and shows no Orthodontics or Public Health Dentistry course at this college. The Dental Council's compliance list records the December 2025 inspections for starting both specialities with 02 seats each. The three-seat rows in Conservative Dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery come from a step from 02 to 03 seats under the EWS category, which the same list shows being inspected at the first final MDS examination in December 2025.

Rankings

The institute climbed twelve places between the last two NIRF cycles, and its research score barely registers.

In 2025 its teaching and resources score of 89.19 was the third highest in the entire Dental table, behind only King George's Medical University at 91.83 and Saveetha at 89.37, while its research score of 5.63 was the lowest of any ranked institution, per the NIRF 2025 Dental ranking. Research barely moved between cycles; every other parameter rose, with perception jumping furthest in raw terms and teaching and resources second.

The institute's own filing is consistent with that research score. It reports the same 4 sponsored projects from 2 funding agencies and the same Rs 8,41,000 received in both 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, and none at all in 2022-2023, in its NIRF 2026 data. The institute does not appear in the 2023 Dental table at all.

Departments

The hospital runs eleven clinical units, each described in a line or two on the Hospital Activities page. Nine map to an MDS speciality, Community Dentistry being the Public Health Dentistry course; the Division of Implantology and the Special Clinic do not.

UnitWhat the institute says it handles
ProsthodonticsDentures, fixed and implant prostheses, maxillofacial prostheses, full mouth rehabilitation
Oral Medicine and RadiologyFirst evaluation of patients, radiographic investigation, diagnosis and treatment planning

OrthodonticsCorrection of malaligned teeth
Division of ImplantologyImplant-based prosthetic treatment
Special ClinicDental care for dignitaries

Medical departments with out-patient and in-patient care and para-clinical laboratories sit alongside these, per the same page.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The clinical plant is the institute's main asset, and treatment here is free. The Hospital Activities page states that examination, radiographic and laboratory investigations and all dental treatment are carried out free of cost, and counts 146 dental chairs with attached units, orthopantomogram and cephalometric radiography, and a ceramic fabrication facility in the prosthodontics laboratory.

The NIRF 2026 data gives an average OPD attendance of 417 for calendar 2024, and the institute's July 2026 census records 4,701 new patients registered at Oral Medicine and Radiology, the department that sees patients first, against a grand total of 16,602 visits there including returning patients and the evening clinic.

The library is air conditioned and centralised. The Facilities page lists 9,180 books, 950 back volumes, 66 foreign journals and 19 Indian journals, and notes in the same breath that no books were purchased in the financial year it describes because of a paucity of funds. Library capital spending in the NIRF 2026 data fell from Rs 35,87,872 in 2023-2024 to Rs 5,08,770 in 2024-2025, while spending on new laboratory equipment was Rs 74,89,390 in 2024-2025 after Rs 2,82,22,132 the year before.

Community work extends the clinical exposure beyond Gorimedu. The Welfare Programme page says the institute has adopted two Community Health Centres at Karikalampakkam and Mannadipet and two Primary Health Centres at Ariankuppam and Villianur, runs an oral cancer detection programme and school dental health programmes, and holds treatment camps in Puducherry and adjacent parts of Tamil Nadu.

Hostel

Separate hostels exist for men and women, each with its own telephone line on the Contact Us page, and the institute's BDS notice says admission to them depends on rooms being available. Neither document gives a room count or bed capacity, so ask the hostel office directly.

The charge is modest and the same for both degrees.

Hostel head, 2026-27Amount
Hostel admission fee, onceRs 250
Electricity and water chargesRs 300
Room rental, double roomRs 2,500

Students' welfare fundRs 100
First-year totalRs 7,550
Sources: hostel tables in the CENTAC copies of the BDS fee structure and the MDS seat and fee notice.

Neither fee sheet lists a mess charge, so budget food separately. A student who discontinues gets back only the hostel caution deposit, after standard deductions.

Faculty

The teaching body leans heavily on long-serving regular staff at the top and contract appointments at the bottom. The institute's NIRF 2026 data lists 73 teachers, of whom 43 are regular and 30 are ad hoc or contractual, and the contract side includes every one of the 27 Assistant Professors on the list plus 3 Associate Professors, all of whom joined between December 2020 and August 2023.

The senior end goes back to the founding. The Dean, Dr. S.P.K. Kennedy Babu, is recorded as joining on 18-10-1990 with 417 months of experience, and two other professors joined in October 1990, per the same return. The Faculty page describes the Dean as Professor and Head of Periodontology, a former member of the Dental Council of India and a member of the School of Medical Science at Pondicherry University, and names Associate Deans for research and for student affairs.

Alongside the MDS holders, the return lists MD, MS and DNB doctors and PhD and M.Sc teachers, who staff the medicine, surgery and basic science departments named on the Contact Us page.

Notable Alumni

The institute's website publishes no alumni list. Its About Us page, last updated in May 2022, counts 17 graduated BDS batches and 10 MDS batches without naming anyone. Graduates surface only in department write-ups: the Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics page records that alumnus Dr. Mithun Jith gave the Dr. A.B. Srivastava Memorial Guest Lecture on digital smile design, and that Dr. Prashanth, an alumnus now on the department's faculty, gave the Dr. B.P. Rajan Memorial Lecture.

Every All India Quota and domicile BDS entrant pays an alumni association fee of Rs 300, per the CENTAC copy of the fee structure, but the site's menu carries no alumni association page.

Verified

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

Recognition here runs through the dental regulator and the university rather than through NAAC. The About Us page states that both the BDS and MDS degrees are recognised by the Dental Council of India and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and that the institute is permanently affiliated to Pondicherry University. Faculty profiles on the site mention an internal NAAC committee and criterion subcommittees, for example on the Orthodontics department page, but the institute publishes no NAAC grade or accreditation certificate, so treat any grade quoted elsewhere as unverified.

The regulator itself has changed. The Dental Council of India website now presents the National Dental Commission, established under the NDC Act, 2023, as the body issuing directions to dental institutions. That same regulator's compliance list asked this institute, after the December 2025 inspections for the two new MDS specialities, to address a deficiency of 1 Reader and 3 Lecturer for Public Health Dentistry and of 2 lecturers and 1 Reader for Orthodontics, among other points including a missing sterilization room, no books purchased in the current year and the university affiliation for 2025-2026 not being provided. Separate December 2025 inspections of the step to three seats under EWS recorded no fire safety certificate in all four specialities inspected and, in Prosthodontics, a deficiency of two Senior Lecturers for 125 BDS and 1 unit PG program, per the same list. A candidate taking any of these specialities can reasonably ask the institute what was submitted in response.

Aid

Scholarships

The MGPGIDS website lists no scholarship scheme of its own. Its NIRF 2026 data records 20 undergraduates receiving full tuition reimbursement from state and central government funds, none from the institution or private bodies, and 188 not receiving it, and those two figures add up exactly to its 202 SC, ST and OBC undergraduates plus 6 from economically weaker households. On the postgraduate side, 3 receive it and 40 do not. Neither the CENTAC fee structure nor the institute's BDS notice mentions a concession on the Rs 3,50,000 self-supporting tuition.

Voices

Student Reviews

Expertie has not yet verified any student review of the Gorimedu campus. The nearest outside signal, a perception score of 51.15 in NIRF 2025, comes from academic peers and employers rather than from students.

One regulator's note gives a current postgraduate something concrete to answer. At the December 2025 inspection of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery the inspectors counted only 37 patients on the second day against a requirement of 60, per the Dental Council's compliance list, so ask how surgical caseload compares on an ordinary week.
