Loyola Institute Of Business Administration

Chennai, Tamil Nadu Est. 1979 Official site Updated
NIRF Management
#55

Loyola Institute of Business Administration prices its two-year full-time PGDM at Rs 18,89,700, and it prints the percentile it shortlists on in the same document: 80 in CAT for general candidates and 60 for Christian candidates. Both come from LIBA's own filing with the All India Council for Technical Education rather than from a listing portal. Its ranking submission adds the outcome, 227 placements out of the 239 students who finished in the minimum stipulated time in 2024-25, at a median of Rs 11,40,000. LIBA teaches from the Loyola College campus on Sterling Road in Nungambakkam, and it is a separate institution from the arts and science college that shares that address.

Overview

LIBA was established in 1979 inside the Loyola College campus and is run by the Loyola College Society, the Jesuit trust behind the older college. The same filing settles what the qualification is on paper. Against "Name of the Affiliating University" it records "Not applicable", because LIBA is a standalone institution, so what it grants is a Post Graduate Diploma in Management approved by AICTE. The one degree-awarding route through the institute is its doctoral programme, which runs under the University of Madras and is open for admission on its own portal.

The Jesuit ownership is not decoration on the letterhead; it reaches into the board and into who gets a seat. The filing dates the order's work in education to 1540 and counts LIBA as one of seventy-five Jesuit higher education institutions in India, naming XLRI Jamshedpur and XIM University Bhubaneswar among the others. Its Board of Governors is chaired by the Provincial of the Chennai Province of the Jesuits and vice-chaired by the Rector of Loyola College, and it seats an AICTE regional officer, the Vice Chancellor of XIM University and the chairman and managing director of CavinKare.

The shared address causes a lot of confusion, and it is worth being exact about it. Loyola College is an autonomous arts and science college affiliated to the University of Madras; LIBA is an AICTE-approved management institute with no affiliating university at all. They sit on the same Nungambakkam ground under the same Jesuit society, they are governed separately, and the national ranking framework scores them in different categories.

Courses & Fees

LIBA runs the same diploma in three delivery modes, and its AICTE filing puts the sanctioned seats and the fee for all three in one table.

ProgrammeDurationSanctioned seatsFee
PGDM (Full Time)2 years180Rs 18,89,700
PGDM (Weekend)2 years60Rs 7,80,600
PGDM (Online)2 years1,000Rs 3,50,000

That full-time figure is tuition for the 2025-27 batch and nothing more. LIBA's own admissions page calls the full-time programme residential, but the hostel is booked and billed apart from tuition at a rate set by which hostel and which room, so the number in the table and the cost of two years in Nungambakkam are separate sums.

Around the three diplomas sits a second tier of shorter and part-time qualifications, and the eligibility floor differs for each. The weekend PGDM asks for a bachelor's degree with at least 50% and two years of full-time work experience, and its programme page adds that the applicant has to still be employed when applying. The Fellow Programme in Management asks for a two-year master's with at least 55%. A PGP in Logistics, run with Kerry Indev Logistics as the industry partner, and the one-year Executive Diploma both open at 50% in any graduation. Doctoral candidates need a master's at 55% and register with the University of Madras. Those thresholds are published together on the admissions portal.

Doctoral work is small and entirely resident. In its 2026 ranking submission LIBA reports 25 full-time research students and no part-time ones, with 5 having completed in the year to 2024-25.

Admissions

For the full-time diploma the entrance test is a gate, not a ranking. The admissions portal sets the 2027 to 2029 intake at a CAT 2026 or XAT 2027 score with a minimum of 60% in class 10, class 12 and the bachelor's degree, taken in any discipline in regular mode only. LIBA then shortlists on that score alone and calls the shortlist to a written ability test, a group discussion and a personal interview. The same page states a screen most schools leave unwritten: candidates who cleared every subject at the first attempt are preferred, and anyone carrying more than two arrears is asked not to apply.

The selection day is scored rather than judged, and the disclosure prints the score sheet.

Selection componentMarks
CAT or XAT score35
Personal interview25
Consistency in academic performance15
Work experience10
Group discussion5
Written ability test5
Sports and co-academic activities5
Catholic Christian candidates5

The entrance test is worth 35 marks and the selection day another 35, the personal interview taking 25 of those and the written ability test and group discussion 5 each. The academic record is 15, work experience 10, and 5 each attach to a sporting or co-academic profile and to being a Catholic Christian. Add the components as printed and they run past the stated total of 100, so read the column as the committee's relative weighting rather than as arithmetic that closes.

Applications for the full-time and weekend seats are counted together, and they moved in a step rather than a curve. The disclosure records 1,779 applications and 244 admissions in 2023-24, then 3,280 applications and 253 admissions in 2024-25, then 3,175 applications and 256 admissions in 2025-26 against 240 sanctioned seats. On the open quota the same filing puts 377 candidates against the selection list and 174 against the waiting list, so the waiting list here is a working part of the process rather than a courtesy.

The calendar closes fast, and it is worth reading before the entrance results land. In the 2025 cycle applications shut on 30.04.2025, the admission list came out on 02.05.2025 with 15 days to accept, the waiting list was activated on 20.05.2025, admissions closed on 04.06.2025 and the academic session began on 09.06.2025, all dated in the disclosure.

Cutoff

LIBA publishes a shortlisting percentile, and it has not moved that percentile for three admission years.

Entrance testGeneralChristian
CAT8060
XAT7550

The same document then reports what the admitted cohort actually scored, and the two sets of numbers do not agree.

Test and categoryHighest admittedLowest admitted
CAT, general89.6151.09
CAT, Christians95.5245.23
XAT, general95.7443.43
XAT, Christians96.9442.01

Read the first table as the mark that gets an application opened and the second as the range that survived the full hundred-mark assessment. A general candidate was admitted on a CAT percentile of 51.09, far under the 80 the same filing prints as the shortlisting mark, which is what a process that gives the test 35 marks looks like from the inside. At the other end, admitted percentiles reach 89.61 in CAT and 96.94 in XAT, so a high score buys a strong opening position on the score sheet and nothing beyond it. Neither table forecasts the next cycle; each records one applicant pool.

Placements

Four graduating cohorts sit across LIBA's two most recent ranking submissions, and the series matters more than any single year because the first of the four is an outlier.

Academic year of graduationGraduated in minimum timePlacedMedian salaryHigher studies
2021-22178100Rs 7,60,0003
2022-23179171Rs 10,00,0002

2024-25239227Rs 11,40,00012
Sources: NIRF 2025 data capturing system submission and NIRF 2026 data capturing system submission.

The 2021-22 cohort is where to start: 100 of 178 graduates placed. The three years after it ran at 171 of 179, 232 of 238 and 227 of 239, so the rate recovered and then held while the batch itself grew by a third.

The median moved with it, from Rs 7,60,000 to Rs 11,40,000, and it is the only salary figure either submission carries, since neither reports a highest package. A median is the middle of the placed half, which makes it the figure to set against the fee. Two years of tuition at Rs 18,89,700 is roughly one and two-thirds of what the middle graduate earns in a first year at Rs 11,40,000, before hostel, living costs or loan interest.

The count going the other way has grown too. Students selected for higher studies rather than a job rose from 3 in the 2021-22 cohort to 12 in 2024-25, still small against 239 graduates but no longer a rounding error.

Seat Matrix

The strength LIBA is sanctioned for and the strength it runs are two different tables, and the filing carries both.

Approved programmeYear of approvalSeats sanctioned
Post Graduate Diploma in Management1991240
NRI, FN, Gulf quota and OCI202336
Post Graduate Diploma in Management, Online20231,000

Against that sanction the institute has resolved to run the flagship two-year programme at a full-time intake of 180, plus a supernumerary 15% for the foreign national, overseas citizen and Gulf quota, and to run the weekend programme at 60, as the same filing records. That is how the admitted totals sit above the sanctioned 240 without breaching the approval: LIBA holds Category II graded autonomy from AICTE, which lets it fill those quota seats over and above the approved intake.

The filing reports its intake by community rather than against the state reservation grid, and the split holds across three years.

Admission yearGeneralChristiansCatholicsDalit CatholicsTotal
2025-26141317114257
2024-25131416714253
2023-24124416613244

Read down the general column and the real contest appears: 141 of 257 admissions in 2025-26, 131 of 253 the year before. The rest sit under community heads LIBA sets for itself, including a separate Dalit Catholic line that no state reservation grid contains. One caution on the arithmetic: this table totals 257 for 2025-26 while the application table earlier in the same document records 256 admitted, a one-student gap the filing never reconciles.

Rankings

LIBA's placing in the government's NIRF 2025 management table is 55th, on an overall score of 53.12. The five parameters behind that rank are lopsided enough that the rank on its own misleads.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Overall53.12
Teaching, Learning and Resources74.53
Graduation Outcomes77.18
Outreach and Inclusivity72.00
Perception23.45
Research and Professional Practice19.26

Three of the five sit at 72 or above and two fall below 24. Graduation outcomes, at 77.18, is the strongest of them and tracks the placement series above. Outreach and inclusivity at 72.00 measures how far a cohort travels from home and how it is composed, and the 2026 submission shows the mechanism: of 480 students on roll, 366 came from outside Tamil Nadu and 19 from outside India.

Research and professional practice at 19.26 is the drag, and the 2026 submission shows the scale that produces it: 10 sponsored projects worth Rs 59,32,000 and 5 consultancy assignments in 2024-25, against a doctoral roll of 25 full-time students and none part-time.

Facilities & Infrastructure

LIBA occupies its own block inside the Loyola College campus rather than a separate site, and the teaching estate is reported room by room in its AICTE filing: 16 classrooms across 1,999.88 sq.m, 2 tutorial rooms at 193.5 sq.m, 4 laboratories at 443.58 sq.m and 2 computer centres at 219.9 sq.m, with a central examination facility, an online examination facility and a barrier-free built environment for disabled and elderly users, all listed in the disclosure.

The laboratories are software rather than bench work. Six are named in the filing, among them a Fintech finance lab and an AI desktop lab, and the analytical stack across them runs to SPSS, AMOS, Minitab, Tableau, R Studio, Python, Knime, Hadoop, Oracle and Tally Prime. Connectivity is a 500 Mbps Tata link alongside a 150 Mbps BSNL line, with 490 systems on the local network, in the same filing.

The library is where last year's money went. It holds 29,332 titles and 38,878 volumes, with 29 online national journals and 4 online international ones plus National Digital Library access, per the disclosure, and the 2026 ranking submission records Rs 2,05,56,299 spent on books, journals and e-resources in 2024-25 against Rs 12,47,747 the year before.

Sport and recreation come with the shared Loyola campus: a gymnasium, cricket, football and hockey grounds, volleyball and badminton courts, and an auditorium that doubles as a sports facility. The building itself is run as a green one, with solar panels, a sewage treatment plant, a daylight roofing system and plantation drives listed among the institute's green initiatives.

Hostel

Accommodation is booked and billed apart from the programme fee, and the rate turns on which hostel and which room.

Hostel and room typeFee per annum
Men's hostel, non-ACRs 1,30,000
Men's hostel, ACRs 2,50,000
Women's hostel, singleRs 1,82,500
Women's hostel, triple sharingRs 1,72,500
Women's hostel, quad roomRs 1,67,500
Women's hostel, quint roomRs 1,62,500

The two hostels are priced on different variables. The men's rate turns on air conditioning, Rs 1,30,000 without it and Rs 2,50,000 with. The women's four rates turn on how many share the room, from Rs 1,82,500 for a single down to Rs 1,62,500 in a five-bed, and the filing prices no air-conditioned women's room at all. An outstation applicant should add the relevant figure twice to the tuition before setting LIBA beside a school that quotes one all-inclusive number.

Faculty

A permanent faculty of 33 carries 509 students, a ratio the disclosure works out to 15.42 students for each faculty member in 2025-26, in its own filing. Every name on the permanent list holds a doctorate, and the 2025 ranking submission repeats the pattern across 35 entries with a Ph.D. against each one.

LIBA organises by area chair rather than by department. Marketing, finance, human resource management, operations, business analytics and general management each have a chair drawn from the permanent staff, and several of the same names also run a centre: logistics and supply chain management, sales and excellence, leadership excellence, ethics and corporate governance, sustainability excellence, and the management development centre. Whoever teaches an elective here has usually designed the specialisation and runs the centre attached to it, which works at 33 faculty and would not at three times the number.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

The accreditation line in LIBA's own filing names one accreditation and one membership, and the difference matters. The National Board of Accreditation has reaccredited the PGDM for the window running 01.07.2023 to 30.06.2026, with the reaccreditation visit held from 22 to 24 December 2024 and the result recorded as reaccredited for three years, in the disclosure. Anyone joining a batch that graduates past mid-2026 should ask to see the renewed letter rather than assume it.

AACSB appears in the same row as "Educational Member", which is a membership of the American business school body and not its accreditation. The online PGDM is listed as not applied for NBA accreditation, so the diploma taught on campus and the one taught online do not carry the same programme-level mark. None of that is what makes the diploma lawful, though. That is AICTE, which approved the PGDM in 1991 and still sits underneath everything NBA has added since.

A NAAC grade is missing from LIBA's record for a structural reason. NAAC assesses universities and the colleges affiliated to them, and LIBA's filing answers "Not applicable" to the affiliating-university question, which puts it outside that population altogether. Its accreditation row names NBA and an AACSB membership and nothing else, so a NAAC grade found under the Loyola name at this address belongs to a different institution on the same campus.

Aid

Scholarships

Financial aid at LIBA is framed as a Jesuit commitment rather than a marketing offer, and the flagship award carries the name to match. The disclosure sets out the Jesuit Empowerment Scholarship, awarded under what the institute calls a preferential option for the poor, and lists its holders one by one, by roll number and name, rather than reporting a total in rupees. Other institute scholarships are decided on a merit-cum-means basis.

Outside its own funds, LIBA names corporate and trust partners that award scholarships to eligible students, including Bharti Foundations, Hyundai Motors India Limited and Palaniswamy Trust, and it says it will help students arrange bank education loans.

The ranking submissions carry the only hard count, and they name a single payer. Of 480 students on roll in the 2026 filing, 49 have their tuition met in full out of LIBA's own funds, and no state scheme, central scheme or private body pays for one of them. The 2025 filing put that institution-funded count at 98 on the same roll of 480, so the number of fully supported students halved in a single year.

Against that, the 2026 filing classes 151 of the 480 as socially challenged and 23 as economically backward, a group several times larger than the waivers available to cover it.

Voices

Student Reviews

No rating is shown against LIBA. The institute publishes no student satisfaction score of its own, and the stars sitting beside its name on coaching forums come from self-selected posters whose identity nobody checks.

One LIBA number would also flatten three quite different experiences into an average that describes none of them. A full-time student spends two years on the Nungambakkam campus on the trimester pattern the disclosure describes. A weekend student is holding down a job and meets the faculty on Saturday evenings and through Sunday. An online student may never see Sterling Road at all. Ask about the programme actually being applied to, and ask someone in the batch immediately above rather than a graduate from before the current curriculum.
