Loyola College

NIRF College
#14

Loyola College, Chennai is one of a small group of Indian arts and science colleges to hold NAAC's top A++ grade, and it is the rare college of its kind that the central government's research department recognises as a scientific and industrial research organisation. It sits 14th among all Indian colleges in the government's NIRF 2025 ranking, a placing carried by an unusually high research and perception score rather than an even one. The college has been run by the Society of Jesus for a century, and it admits students through its own community-wise merit process rather than any single entrance exam. Its fees split sharply between a state-aided shift and a self-financing one, and the sections below tie each of those claims to the college's own pages and the official ranking tables.

Overview

Loyola was founded in 1925 by the French Jesuit priest Rev. Fr. Francis Bertram, a government-aided Catholic minority institution run by the Society of Jesus and affiliated to the University of Madras. It has been an autonomous college since 1978, which means its departments design their own syllabus and conduct their own examinations under the university's degree. Its motto, Luceat Lux Vestra, gives the campus its "Let Your Light Shine" tagline.

Three official credentials do most of the work in explaining where the college stands. It is reaccredited by NAAC with a CGPA of 3.55 on the four-point scale, an A++ grade awarded in the body's fourth assessment cycle. It carries UGC recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12B and has been recognised by the commission as a College of Excellence. And it is, on its own account, the only arts and science college in India recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, a status normally reserved for research institutes and industry labs. The campus runs to about 79.5 acres on Sterling Road in Nungambakkam, one of the larger college footprints inside central Chennai.

Courses & Fees

Loyola teaches across ten academic schools, and its degrees run through a grant-in-aid stream and a self-financing one that the college labels Shift I and Shift II. The undergraduate list is broad enough that the same subject can appear in both shifts, so the shift you are admitted to matters as much as the subject.

LevelShift I (grant-in-aid)Shift II (self-financing)
Arts (UG)B.A. Economics, English, History, Sociology, TamilB.A. Economics, English, French, History
Commerce (UG)B.Com. GeneralB.B.A., B.Com. General, Corporate Secretaryship, Accounting and Finance, Computer Applications, Honours
Science (UG)B.Sc. Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Visual CommunicationB.C.A., B.Sc. Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
Media (UG)B.Sc. Visual CommunicationB.M.M. Multimedia and Animation, B.Voc. 3D Animation, B.Voc. Digital Journalism

At postgraduate level the master's programmes span M.A. Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Sociology, International Relations and Social Work; M.Com.; and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Zoology, Data Science, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Counselling Psychology, Food Chemistry and Visual Communication. Doctoral research runs across the sciences and the humanities under the college's autonomous charter.

Fees are where the two shifts diverge, and there is no single "Loyola fee" to quote. The grant-in-aid Shift I programmes are heavily state-subsidised, so their tuition sits far below the self-financing Shift II versions of the same subject, and a professional or computing degree costs more again. The college also sets the amount by the board a student cleared Class 12 under, listing separate figures for the Tamil Nadu state board, CBSE or ISC, and other boards. The binding, per-programme, first-semester amounts are printed in the college's own fee structure document; read the exact figure for your shift, subject and board there, since the aided and self-financing rates are not interchangeable.

Admissions

There is no common entrance exam for Loyola. Admission runs through the college's online application portal, and selection for most programmes rests on Class 12 marks in the relevant subjects rather than a test score. Because it is a Catholic minority institution, the college fills part of its intake through a minority quota for Catholic and other Christian applicants, while its grant-in-aid seats also follow Tamil Nadu's communal reservation norms. The practical effect is that you compete on a merit list drawn for your community and category, not against the whole applicant pool at once.

Two things are worth settling before applying. First, decide between the aided Shift I and the self-financing Shift II version of a subject, because they admit and charge separately. Second, track the college's own admission notices for the current cycle's window and document checklist, since the process is run in-house and the calendar moves each year.

Cutoff

Loyola does not publish a fixed rank or percentage cutoff of the kind attached to CUET or JEE seats, because it does not admit through a central rank. The effective bar for any programme is set only when that year's community-wise merit list closes, and it moves with how the applicant pool performed and how many seats a community's list holds. High-demand subjects such as commerce, economics and the sciences have historically needed strong Class 12 marks, but the college states no guaranteed threshold, so a percentage quoted on an aggregator before the merit lists are published is an estimate rather than a rule. Aim for the strongest board result you can, and read the closing marks off the published list for your subject and community.

Placements

Loyola runs a centralised Training and Placement Cell for its undergraduate and postgraduate students, and it publishes the season's headline numbers in its own brochure. For the 2023-24 recruitment season the placement figures were as follows.

Metric (2023-24)Value
Highest package22.5 LPA
Average package6.34 LPA
Median package5.88 LPA
Gross placement valueRs 30.85 crore

The gap between the 22.5 LPA top offer and the 5.88 LPA median is the honest signal here: a handful of high offers pull the average above the median, so the median is the number a typical placed student should weigh. Recruiting spanned 15 or more sectors, including tax and audit, FMCG, investment banking, management consulting, information technology, marketing, pharmaceuticals and market research, a spread that reflects a general arts, science and commerce intake rather than a single professional pipeline. The same brochure records an international placement that cycle, with 2 students hired as teaching faculty by Meccademia Education in the United Arab Emirates on a CTC of 12.83 LPA, about 56,344 AED.

Seat Matrix

Loyola does not publish a single sanctioned seat-matrix document that splits every programme by community and category, the way a state counselling authority would. What its placement brochure does give is the size of each graduating batch, which is the closest official proxy for how many students a programme actually carries. The undergraduate batch sizes below are the larger programmes.

Undergraduate programmeBatch size
B.Com. (Commerce)521
B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship)217
B.A. Economics213
B.B.A. (Business Administration)195
B.Sc. Visual Communication141
B.A. English131
B.A. History127
B.Sc. Mathematics97
B.Sc. Computer Science94
B.Sc. Physics74
B.Sc. Chemistry71
B.A. Sociology71

These are enrolled batch sizes, not sanctioned intake, so a community-wise seat count for the coming year comes from the college's admission notice for that programme rather than from this list. It still tells you that commerce, corporate secretaryship and economics run the deepest cohorts on campus.

Rankings

Loyola takes 14th place in the NIRF 2025 college list on a 71.14 overall, and what the single rank hides is how unevenly it is built: research and perception sit near the top of the scale while teaching, graduation outcomes and outreach trail, so the place rests on two pillars rather than an even five.

NIRF 2025 (College category)Score
Overall rank14
Overall score71.14
Teaching, Learning and Resources63.70
Research and Professional Practice94.71
Graduation Outcomes66.82
Outreach and Inclusivity48.31
Perception99.10

The standout figure is a research and professional-practice score of 94.71 and a near-maximum perception score of 99.10, the research number far above what an undergraduate teaching college usually posts and consistent with the college's DSIR research recognition. The weakest is outreach and inclusivity, which measures the regional and social diversity of the student body. NIRF ranks shift year to year, so weigh the parameter shape against the subject you want rather than the single headline place.

Departments

Teaching at Loyola is organised into ten academic schools, and the school is the real unit of choice because your degree lives inside one of them. The schools group the subjects as below.

SchoolCovers
Commerce and EconomicsB.Com. streams, B.B.A., M.Com., economics
Physical SciencesChemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics
Life SciencesZoology, biotechnology, plant biology, food chemistry
Computational SciencesComputer science, computer applications, data science
Humanities and Social SciencesHistory, sociology, philosophy, social work, international relations
LanguagesEnglish, Tamil, French
Media StudiesVisual communication, multimedia and animation, digital journalism
Human ExcellenceValue education and formation
Physical EducationSport and physical education
Service LearningCommunity outreach and diploma programmes

Because each school frames its own honours and doctoral work under the college's autonomous charter, the school you enter, not the Loyola name on the certificate, is what really shapes the syllabus and research you meet.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The college library is the piece of infrastructure Loyola puts at the centre of its academic life, and its research standing is not incidental: the DSIR recognition that makes it the only arts and science college in India with that status rests on real laboratory and research infrastructure across the science schools. The Nungambakkam campus, one of the larger college sites in central Chennai, carries the science and computing laboratories, seminar and examination halls, and the sports grounds that support its physical-education school.

Beyond the academic blocks, the college runs the student formation and service-learning programmes that give the campus its Jesuit character, alongside the usual auditorium, canteen and society spaces. For the current condition and booking of any specific facility, the college's own departmental and library pages are the reliable source.

Hostel

Loyola provides separate residential accommodation for men and women, allotted through its own online hostel portals rather than bundled with the course seat. Prospective residents apply through the men's hostel and women's hostel admission systems as a step distinct from the academic application. The college does not post a public room count or a rent card, so an outstation applicant should treat a hostel place as something to confirm directly at the admission stage, and read the current eligibility and fee terms off those portals.

Faculty

What marks out Loyola's teaching staff is the research they carry next to the classroom. Its DSIR research recognition rests on science departments that run their own laboratories and guide doctoral scholars, so a physics or chemistry professor here is often leading a research group while teaching undergraduate and postgraduate classes, and a large share of the staff hold doctorates. The college posts no single student-to-teacher ratio, so the honest way to gauge the teaching in a subject is that department's own staff profile rather than one campus-wide headline figure.

Notable Alumni

Loyola's alumni record, as the college sets it out in its own placement brochure, reaches across sport, public life, business and journalism. The chess grandmaster and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand studied here, as did Verghese Kurien, the architect of India's dairy cooperative movement remembered as the father of the White Revolution. Its public-life alumni include the economist and former Reserve Bank of India Governor C. Rangarajan, the parliamentarians P. Chidambaram and Dayanidhi Maran, and the former Supreme Court judge Jasti Chelameswar. From business and media it names N. Srinivasan, managing director of India Cements; N. Ram of The Hindu group; G. Viswanathan, founder of VIT University; and Karthick Rao, chief executive of Nielsen. That mix, rather than one dominant profession, is the signature of a broad arts, science and commerce college and not the narrow roll of a specialist institute.
