Presidency College

Chennai, Tamil Nadu Est. 1840 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#15

Presidency College, Chennai charges a first-year fee of about Rs 1,295 for its arts and commerce degrees, and it is a Tamil Nadu government college that ranks 15th among all Indian colleges in NIRF 2025. That pairing of a national ranking with a state-subsidised fee is the reason to understand the place before you apply, because a seat here is won on Class 12 marks through a single state admission portal, not through an entrance exam and not by paying a premium. Every figure here is cited to Presidency's own site, the NIRF portal, or the Tamil Nadu directorate that sanctions its seats, so nothing on this page rests on an aggregator's estimate.

Overview

Presidency traces to 16 October 1840, when it opened as the Madras Preparatory School in a rented building in Egmore before growing into a graduate college and moving in 1870 to its present site on Kamarajar Salai in Chepauk, facing the Marina, as the Presidency College history records. It is run by the Government of Tamil Nadu and affiliated to the University of Madras, and the college describes itself as the institution the university grew out of. It was conferred autonomous status in 1987 and reaccredited by NAAC at 'A' grade; autonomy lets a Presidency department set its own curriculum and run its own question papers, with only the parchment issued in the University of Madras's name. The college teaches across 26 departments and reports more than 5,500 students and over 250 teaching staff, the scale of a large multi-faculty government college rather than a boutique one.

Courses & Fees

Presidency runs a general arts, science and commerce spread, and almost every undergraduate subject is taught across two shifts, so the shift you are admitted to sits alongside the subject as part of the seat. The undergraduate list covers B.A. in Tamil, English, History, Political Science, Economics and the literatures, including Hindi, Urdu and Malayalam; B.Com. in Commerce (General) and Corporate Secretaryship; B.Sc. in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Psychology, Plant Biology and Biotechnology, and Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology; and special B.Com. and B.C.A. sections for hearing-impaired students. Postgraduate study runs to M.A., M.Com., M.Sc. across the same disciplines plus M.C.A. and M.S.W., with M.Phil. and Ph.D. research above them.

The fee is where a government college looks unlike any private one, and Presidency prints the exact heads on its fee page. The first-year undergraduate amounts are nominal.

Fee head (first-year UG)B.A. / B.Com.B.Sc.
Admission feeRs 5Rs 5
Medical feeRs 5Rs 5
Physical development fund IRs 385Rs 385
Physical development fund IIRs 650Rs 650
Laboratory feenoneRs 20
Parent-teacher associationRs 250Rs 250
Grand totalRs 1,295Rs 1,315

Postgraduate grand totals on the same fee page run from Rs 865 to Rs 2,815 depending on the programme and category. These are the tuition-side college fees; a student still meets university examination and one-time charges, but the headline cost of a degree here is a fraction of what a self-financing college in the same city charges.

Admissions

You do not sit an entrance exam for Presidency's undergraduate courses. Admission runs through the Tamil Nadu government's single-window system for its arts and science colleges, the TNGASA online application, where a candidate applies once and is considered against merit built on Class 12 marks in the relevant subjects. Because it is a state government college, its seats follow Tamil Nadu's communal reservation categories, so you are ranked within your category rather than against the whole applicant pool. The college then publishes its own undergraduate rank list for each cycle, which is the document that tells you whether your marks cleared a subject's bar. Postgraduate entry is a separate process the college schedules on its own admission calendar.

Cutoff

There is no advance percentage or rank cutoff to clear at Presidency, and that is the point most easily misread about a government arts and science college. A subject's real closing mark comes into existence only once its rank list is finalised for that intake, rising or falling with the strength of that year's applicants and the number of category seats on the table. The competitive subjects, commerce and the laboratory sciences among them, have historically needed strong Class 12 marks, but the college commits to no fixed threshold in advance. Any single "Presidency cutoff" quoted before the rank list is published is an estimate, so aim for the best higher-secondary result you can and read the closing marks off the published list for your subject and category.

Placements

Presidency runs a Placement and Training Cell that gives career guidance by discipline, circulates openings and higher-study and research leads, and works to build the confidence of first-generation and disadvantaged students, and it is coordinated by named faculty rather than a corporate placement office. The college itself issues no verified outcome report, no average CTC and no headline offer, so a salary number pinned to Presidency on a coaching or aggregator page has no official backing. That absence matters less here than at a professional college, because a large share of Presidency's graduates move on to postgraduate study, research, the civil services and other competitive examinations, where the outcome is an admission or a posting rather than a private-sector salary.

Seat Matrix

Seats at Presidency are sanctioned per subject and per shift by the state, and the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Collegiate Education publishes the intake for each course. The undergraduate science and commerce intakes below give the shape of a section here.

Undergraduate programmeSeats per shift
B.Com. (General)60
B.Sc. Physics50
B.Sc. Chemistry50
B.Sc. Psychology50
B.Sc. Geography50
B.Sc. Geology50
B.Sc. Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology40
B.Sc. Mathematics (Shift I)40
B.Sc. Statistics (Shift I)40

Each of these figures is then split across Tamil Nadu's reservation categories at allotment, so the number open to a given category is a slice of the total. The two-shift structure roughly doubles the intake for subjects taught in both shifts, and the language and special-category sections carry smaller intakes than the science and commerce courses.

Rankings

Presidency's standing does not rest on one figure. In the NIRF 2025 college ranking it is placed 15th among all Indian colleges with an overall score of 70.62, and its five component scores show a distinctly teaching-led profile.

NIRF 2025 parameterPresidency College score
Teaching, Learning and Resources78.44
Perception77.71
Graduation Outcomes68.59
Research and Professional Practice59.46
Outreach and Inclusivity54.04

Read down the five, Presidency looks like exactly what it is, a long-established teaching institution: its classroom-resource and reputation marks do the heavy lifting, its research-and-practice figure sits lowest, and that order is what a college built for broad undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, not a research pipeline, tends to record. A rank of 15 puts it among the highest-placed state government arts and science colleges in the country on this table.

Departments

At Presidency the department, not the college crest, is what shapes a degree: teaching, examinations and research all sit within one. The grouping below follows the four faculties the college uses to organise its own departments listing.

FacultyDepartments
LanguagesTamil, English, Hindi, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Telugu, Urdu
Humanities and Social SciencesEconomics, History, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Work
ScienceMathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Psychology, Zoology, Plant Biology and Biotechnology, Geography, Geology, Microbiology
CommerceCommerce, Corporate Secretaryship, Commerce (Hearing Impaired)

The languages faculty is unusually deep for a science-ranked college, and the dedicated hearing-impaired commerce section is a feature few of its peers carry, both reflecting the social remit of a state institution.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Presidency's campus is itself part of the draw: a heritage site on Kamarajar Salai in Chepauk, facing the Marina, that has stood on the same ground since 1870. The science departments run the laboratories their degrees require, and the college maintains a general library serving all faculties. Beyond that, the college's own pages do not publish a detailed inventory of buildings, sports facilities or student amenities, so for the current state of a specific facility the reliable source is the college office rather than a third-party listing. What is not in doubt is the location: few colleges in Chennai sit on a seafront heritage campus this central.

Hostel

Presidency is, in practice, largely a day college drawing students from across the Chennai metropolitan area, and its official pages do not publish hostel room counts, rent, or an allotment process. An outstation applicant should treat residential accommodation as something to confirm directly with the college office at the admission stage rather than assume a room comes attached to the seat. Where the state runs separate government hostels for eligible categories of students, those are applied for through their own channels, not through the college admission itself.

Faculty

Teaching at Presidency is organised strictly by department, and the college reports more than 250 teaching staff and over 50 non-teaching staff across its 26 departments. The official pages give no college-wide student-to-staff figure, and for a college this large that omission is fair: what tells you about the teaching in physics or in commerce is the strength of that one department, not an average spread over the whole institution. As an autonomous college, its departments also set and mark their own examinations, which puts more of the academic weight on the individual department than at a non-autonomous affiliated college.

Notable Alumni

Presidency's alumni roll is among the most distinguished of any Indian college, and it is dominated by science and public life. Two Nobel laureates in Physics studied here, C. V. Raman and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, and the mathematician Srinivasa Varadhan, an Abel Prize laureate, is a third figure of that rank. In public life its alumni include C. Rajagopalachari, the last Governor-General of India; V. K. Krishna Menon, the former Defence Minister; K. M. Cariappa, independent India's first Commander-in-Chief; the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin; and the former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. Two threads run through that roll, fundamental science and national public life, and they are the fields Presidency has fed for the better part of two centuries.
