Psg College Of Arts And Science

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu Est. 1947 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#10

PSG College of Arts and Science sits at rank 10 in the government's NIRF 2025 college list, and it is the highest-placed arts and science college in Tamil Nadu on that table. It is an autonomous, government-aided college in Coimbatore, which means two things a searcher should hold onto: it frames its own syllabus and conducts its own examinations under Bharathiar University, and it admits students on qualifying-exam marks rather than a single national entrance test.

Overview

Run by PSG & Sons' Charities, the charitable trust the family of P.S. Govindaswamy Naidu began building in 1926, the college opened in 1947 and shares the wider PSG group's campus belt in Peelamedu, on the eastern edge of Coimbatore. It grew out of the same charitable network that later built the separate PSG College of Technology and the PSG Hospitals, but it is its own institution with an arts, science, commerce and management remit rather than an engineering one. That distinction matters when you search, because the "PSG" name attaches to several campuses in the same city.

It was granted autonomous status in 1978, among the first arts and science colleges in the state to win that freedom while it was still under the University of Madras, and it now takes its degrees from Bharathiar University, the state university set up in Coimbatore in 1982. Autonomy is why the college frames its own curriculum, runs its own continuous internal assessment and sets its own examination scheme, while the degree itself is conferred by Bharathiar University. It carries an A++ grade from NAAC in its most recent assessment cycle, alongside the UGC's "College with Potential for Excellence" status and DBT Star College support for its laboratory science, markers of a college judged mainly on the depth of its teaching rather than a large research output.

Courses & Fees

The programme spread here is unusually wide for an arts and science college, and it splits cleanly into two funding tracks that decide almost everything about cost and competition: a government-aided track and a self-financing track. The aided track is the older, smaller, heavily subsidised set of degrees; the self-financing track is where the college has added most of its newer, career-facing programmes, from data analytics to hotel management. The table shows a representative slice of each so you can see the shape of the offering.

TrackUndergraduate examplesPostgraduate examples

Self-financingBCA, BBA and its logistics, retail and information-systems variants, BSc Computer Science, BSc Information Technology, BSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, BSc Costume Design & Fashion, BSc Catering Science & Hotel Management, BSc Visual Communication, BA Carnatic Music, plus a long BCom family (E-Commerce, Professional Accounting, Business Analytics, Foreign Trade, Banking and Insurance)MA English, MCA, MSc Biotechnology, MSc Applied Electronics, MSc Clinical Psychology, MSc Hospital Administration, MSc Food Technology Management, MCom International Business, and a five-year integrated MSc Software Systems

The college also runs Ph.D. research across its science, commerce and humanities departments and a pair of postgraduate diplomas in human resource and business management. The BCA, BBA, MCA and integrated software-systems programmes are the ones flagged as AICTE-approved in the college's 2026-2027 admission brochures.

On fees, the honest answer is that the cost depends entirely on which track a programme sits in, and the college does not publish a single consolidated fee table online. Aided-stream degrees carry the low, state-regulated tuition that comes with government funding, while self-financing degrees are priced per programme and are higher. The fee that actually applies is the "prescribed fees" line quoted for your course at admission and printed in that programme's brochure, so treat any fixed rupee amount on a third-party aggregator as unofficial until you have checked it against the college's own prospectus.

Admissions

Admission is decided on merit in the qualifying examination rather than a common entrance exam, which sets this college apart from the CUET-routed and JoSAA-routed institutions most rank tables mix it in with. You apply directly to the college through its online admission portal, which opens for the 2026-2027 undergraduate and postgraduate intake in late March 2026, and selection weighs your Class 12 marks in the subjects relevant to the course you want. Every offer is provisional until Bharathiar University approves the eligibility, and the college can withdraw a seat if a submitted document proves false.

Two structural points shape your odds. First, aided seats follow the Tamil Nadu government's communal reservation roster, so the merit bar is read within your category, and because aided places are few they close at higher marks than the self-financing equivalents of the same subject. Second, the college keeps a sports pathway with separate selection trials for men and women, sitting outside the pure marks route. Applicants bring the standard document set at admission, including Class 10, 11 and 12 mark statements, a transfer certificate, a digital community certificate, and a migration certificate for anyone who finished school outside Tamil Nadu.

Cutoff

PSGCAS runs no entrance exam, so there is no closing rank or fixed cutoff to track. What decides a seat is your Class 12 mark measured against the demand for that exact course in a given year, and that demand is very unevenly spread across the college. The subsidised aided seats in the science and commerce subjects fill at the steepest marks, because they are both few and cheap, while the self-financing sections of the same subjects, and the newer applied and computer programmes, admit at markedly more reachable marks.

Placements

Placement here is run through the college's Career Development Centre, which pairs recruiter drives with a structured training pipeline rather than treating placement as a one-week event. The centre reports a stable recruiter base and a high offer count across recent years, and the figures below are the ones it publishes on its own placements page.

Placement metric2022-20232023-20242024-2025
Recruiters visited200+200+200+
Total offers2,100+1,600+2,100+

The same placement record shows 419 students placed in the 5 LPA-and-above band in 2024-2025, with the strongest offers reaching around ₹14 lakh, so the ceiling is real even though most offers cluster well below it, as they do at almost any large arts and science college. The training side is what feeds those drives: a Skill Enhancement and Employability Development programme it brands SEED, a credit-bearing Professional Skill Enhancement course for undergraduates, and company-specific preparation ahead of each recruiter's visit. Read the offer count as breadth of opportunity across a very large student body, not as a promise for any one degree, since outcomes vary sharply between the computer, commerce and pure-science streams.

Seat Matrix

The college does not publish a consolidated seat matrix, and its intake is genuinely fragmented, because the programme list is long and several of the busier self-financing degrees, among them BCom, BBA, BSc Computer Science and BSc Visual Communication, run in two sections to take the demand. Two kinds of ceiling apply here: the aided seats are the small, reservation-governed set that admissions describes, while the AICTE-approved degrees, meaning the BCA, BBA, MCA and integrated software-systems programmes, are capped at their AICTE-sanctioned intake. A single per-course seat count is not something the college posts in one place.

Rankings

In the NIRF 2025 college ranking the college scores 73.15 overall for its rank 10 place, up from 11th the year before, and the five parameters behind that total are lopsided in a way worth reading.

NIRF 2025 parameterPSGCAS score
Perception89.42
Research and Professional Practice74.00
Graduation Outcomes73.56
Teaching, Learning and Resources73.44
Outreach and Inclusivity53.44

Perception does most of the lifting at 89.42, well clear of the other four, a strong signal that peers and recruiters rate the college highly. The three teaching-and-research parameters sit close together just below that, an unusually even spread, while outreach and inclusivity trails at 53.44, the one score a candidate weighing the regional diversity of the intake should read closely.

Departments

Teaching is organised into departments grouped under three faculties, and because this is an autonomous college the department is where your syllabus, internal assessment and project work are actually decided. The map below shows how the main departments fall across the sciences, commerce and management, and the humanities.

FacultyDepartments
Sciences and computingPhysics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Psychology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Costume Design and Fashion, Catering Science and Hotel Management
Commerce and managementCommerce, Corporate Secretaryship, Business Administration, Management
Humanities and social sciencesTamil, English, Hindi, Economics, Sociology, Social Work, Journalism and Mass Communication, Carnatic Music

Several of these departments carry the programme through all three levels, offering the bachelor's, the master's and a Ph.D., which is why a student can enter for a BSc and stay on for doctoral work in the same subject without leaving the college.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The academic infrastructure leans on a large central library and a set of well-equipped science laboratories, the latter backed by the DBT Star College grant that funds hands-on undergraduate science. The library is the single facility almost every student passes through, a multi-storey building with a large book stock, print and electronic journals, reading rooms and digital access points. Beyond the library and labs, the Peelamedu campus carries the usual spread of an established college: departmental computer centres, seminar and examination halls, sports grounds, and the NSS and NCC units that run the college's outreach and drill activities. Because it sits inside the wider PSG cluster in eastern Coimbatore, the location is well connected to the city and to the group's other institutions.

Hostel

The college runs separate hostels for men and women near the campus, with rooms in single, double and triple-occupancy formats and a mess that serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Security runs on controlled entry and CCTV, and residents get Wi-Fi, round-the-clock water, common study and recreation rooms, laundry and a tie-up for emergency medical care. Room numbers and the hostel fee are not posted online.

Faculty

Being autonomous, PSGCAS lets each department set its own teaching and recruit its own staff, so the faculty is really a collection of departments rather than one pooled body. The sizes are very uneven, with the science, commerce and computing departments carrying far more staff than the language, social-work or music units, which matters because the subject you pick decides the depth of teaching you actually meet.

Notable Alumni

The best-documented name among the college's alumni is the filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj, who studied here before moving into direction and building a well-known run of Tamil action films; the college's Wikipedia entry records him among its alumni. Its alumni association is active, and each Foundation Day the college honours former students who have gone on to make their mark in film, sport, science and public service. That graduate base is large simply because the college has taught so many students across so many disciplines since it opened in 1947.

News & Articles

There is no live news feed for the college on this page; its current notices, admission dates and result lists are posted on the college's own website each cycle. The fixture on its own calendar worth watching is Foundation Day, held each year to mark the 1947 founding, when it recognises staff and alumni achievements.

College Compare

On the wider NIRF college table PSG College of Arts and Science sits just below the Delhi University colleges that lead it, and it is the top-placed arts and science college in Tamil Nadu on the 2025 list. Its real peers are the other autonomous, multi-stream colleges of Coimbatore and the state, and against them its distinguishing marks are the sheer breadth of its aided and self-financing programmes and the size of its recruiter base, set against the large, uneven intake that breadth brings. A side-by-side compare tool for those peers is not built into this page yet, and in any case a college this broad is really many colleges under one name.
