Government Dental College, Kozhikode grew out of a dentistry department inside Calicut Medical College and still sits on that campus. Kerala's 2026 medical rank list reached only 2,277 before Kozhikode's general merit BDS seats were gone in phase one, the shortest reach among the state's six government dental colleges; the candidate at that rank had a NEET-UG score of 558. On NIRF's 2025 dental table only three institutions scored higher on graduation outcomes, a score helped by filings that report each BDS and MDS leaver as employed or studying further.
Overview
A Department of Dentistry opened in Calicut Medical College in 1969, grew into a dental wing with four specialities in 1979 and was upgraded to a full college in 1981, according to the about page. Teaching began a year later. That page's list of heads starts with a Special Officer from January 1982, the first BDS batch of 30 joined in 1982, and the homepage carries the line "Since 1982", so 1981 marks the sanction and 1982 the first class. Intake rose to 40 in 1996 and 50 in 2009, and the college calls itself the second government dental college in Kerala.

Kozhikode's own documents show two working ties to Calicut Medical College. Its hostel rules name the Principal of Government Medical College, Kozhikode as chief warden of the men's hostels, while the dental principal is chief warden of the ladies hostel. The oral surgery department page lists major cases under general anaesthesia in a Major Operation Theatre and a Casualty Emergency Operation Theatre, with its surgeons joining plastic, neuro, onco, paediatric and general surgery and ENT on interdisciplinary cases, but it does not name the building those theatres are in.
Courses & Fees
Beyond dentists, Kozhikode trains dental technicians and theatre assistants: 10 seats a year each in two diplomas run under Kerala's Directorate of Medical Education, the dental mechanics course since 1984 and the operatory assistant course since 2011, per the about page.
| Programme | Length | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| BDS | 4 and a half years plus 1 year of rotating internship | 50 |
| MDS | 3 years plus 1 year of senior residency | 18 |
| Diploma Course in Dental Mechanics (DCDM) | 2 years | 10 |
| Dental Operatory Room Assistant (DORA) | 2 years | 10 |
Oral and maxillofacial surgery and conservative dentistry carry 3 MDS seats each and the other six subjects 2, per the courses page; public health dentistry has none. The postgraduate programmes arrived one by one: oral surgery in 1992, with recognition in 1994 and all 3 seats DCI recognised since 2015 on its department page, orthodontics in 1994 with two seats on its page, prosthodontics in 1994 on its page and periodontics in 1999 on its page.
After the MDS, orthodontics has offered an 11-month senior residency running from August 2026 to July 2027; its residency brochure set a 30-question MCQ screening if more than 5 applied, then interviews on 16-07-2026.
What a Seat Costs
For a state quota BDS seat, the money moves before the student reaches Calicut. CEE Kerala's 2026 notice puts the government dental college fee at Rs 20,840, and item 13 on Kozhikode's BDS document list is the payment slip from CEE. Postgraduate tuition in government dental colleges is Rs 52,100 a year under the PG Dental 2026 prospectus, which says that fee is remitted at the college on admission, whereas the college's MDS document list asks state quota joiners for a payment from CEE, so confirm with the office where it is paid.
Walking away is the expensive part. The BDS bond form the college reposts from CEE makes a student and two sureties liable for Rs 5,00,000, and its junior resident bond holds an MDS student to repay any stipend plus Rs 20,00,000.
Admissions
The BDS class is assembled from four streams, per Annexure III (2) of the KEAM 2026 prospectus: CEE Kerala's general and community seats from the NEET-UG based Kerala State Medical Rank List, 8 all India quota seats handled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), one Government of India nominee, and two special seats CEE fills from the same rank list. Those two are the only government BDS seat in Kerala for children of serving defence personnel and, for 2026, the only one for a sports team event. The prospectus rotates sports seats between team and individual events each year, so the second of them may change.
MDS places are split between two counsellors on NEET-MDS results. MCC's MDS matrix lists 9 of the 18 under code 900111, and CEE Kerala allots the state share from a Kerala merit list that prints each applicant's NEET-MDS rank.
BDS Reporting at Kozhikode
A BDS joiner hands over thirteen items on the college's 2025 document list. Beyond school certificates and the allotment letter, it wants transfer, conduct, physical fitness and migration certificates, caste, income and non creamy layer papers where reservation is claimed, the NEET score card, admit card and data sheet, a bond on Rs 200 Kerala stamp paper, two photos and an Aadhaar copy. The office clerk handling BDS queries is named with a phone number on the homepage.
MDS Reporting at Kozhikode
Postgraduates bring two bonds rather than one, a junior resident bond and a senior resident bond on Rs 200 stamp paper each, along with the BDS certificate, mark lists, internship certificate and state dental council registration, according to the college's MDS document list.
Cutoff
Eight of the ten categories CEE printed for KKD in phase one closed at better ranks than the same categories at Thiruvananthapuram, the next tightest government college; only LA (3,971 against 3,520) and DV (10,900 against 10,834) closed later, per the phase one last rank table.
BDS Through CEE Kerala, 2026
| Category printed by CEE | Last rank, phase one | NEET-UG score (NEET rank) of that candidate | Last rank, phase two provisional |
|---|---|---|---|
| State Merit (SM) | 2,277 | 558 (31,206) | 2,320 |
| Muslim (MU) | 2,344 | 557 (31,947) | 2,352 |
| Other Backward Hindu (BH) | 2,795 | 550 (37,033) | 2,795 |
| Ezhava (EZ) | 2,856 | 549 (37,839) | 3,218 |
| Viswakarma (VK) | 3,176 | 545 (41,527) | 3,176 |
| Economically Weaker Sections (EW) | 3,902 | 534 (51,325) | 4,022 |
| Latin Catholic and Anglo Indian (LA) | 3,971 | 533 (52,268) | 6,609 |
| Dheevara (DV) | 10,900 | 456 (1,57,050) | 11,635 |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 14,188 | 422 (2,21,695) | 14,543 |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 23,168 | 328 (4,90,226) | 23,168 |
The phase one allotment list put 19 candidates on SM seats here, from state rank 967 (NEET 589) down to 2,277 (NEET 558) on the rank list. By their own category, twelve of those 19 were Muslim, five Ezhava, one Viswakarma and one general. The serving defence seat went to state rank 2,759 and the sports team seat to 16,858.
Thirty of the 39 KKD rows on the phase one allotment carry option number 15. Kerala has 14 government medical colleges in the prospectus, which fits candidates who ranked every government MBBS college first and Kozhikode's BDS next.
Two SM seats opened in phase two. The rank 967 candidate moved to MBBS at Government Medical College, Parippally, Kollam on the phase two provisional allotment, and the general category holder at 1,399 does not appear on that list at all. Community seat holders at 2,282 (Muslim) and 2,320 (Ezhava) were lifted into state merit, which is why the SM close slipped to 2,320. Elsewhere in the class, an EW holder left for MBBS at Kasaragod, the DV holder for MBBS at Palakkad Institute of Medical Sciences, and the LA holder for the same category seat at Thiruvananthapuram, which pushed the LA close out to 6,609.
BDS Through MCC, 2026
MCC's round one result filled all 8 all India seats under code 200190, with open places going to NEET ranks as good as 8,619 and 16,972. Six of the eight holders, including the one at 8,619, are marked "Not Reported" in the round two result printed on 12-09-2026, and those six seats (two open, two OBC, one EWS, one SC) are exactly Kozhikode's line on the round two vacancy list. Of the two who did report, one kept the seat and the ST holder upgraded to Agartala Government Dental College; round two filled all eight places again.
MDS in 2026
Kozhikode took the first name on CEE's PG Dental phase one allotment: NEET-MDS rank 24, second on CEE's Kerala rank list, chose orthodontics here. The orthodontics page claims exactly that pull, saying the department is chosen by top rankers.
| MDS subject | CEE Kerala: seats and NEET-MDS ranks | MCC: seats and NEET-MDS ranks |
|---|---|---|
| Orthodontics | 1: 24 (SM) | 1: 24 (OBC) |
| Conservative Dentistry | 2: 36 (SM), 1,066 (SC) | 1: 36 (open) |
| Periodontics | 1: 143 (SM) | 1: 250 (OBC) |
| Oral Medicine and Radiology | 1: 149 (SM) | 1: 401 (open) |
| Pedodontics | 1: 226 (BH) | 1: 159 (OBC) |
| Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | 1: 413 (EW) | 2: 119 (open), 264 (EWS) |
| Oral Pathology | 1: 793 (BX) | 1: 2,713 (SC) |
| Prosthodontics | None | 1: 2,127 (ST) |
The same NEET-MDS ranks, 24 in orthodontics and 36 in conservative dentistry, hold a CEE seat and an MCC seat in the same subject at Kozhikode, because the rank column on CEE's allotment is the NEET-MDS rank. Each rank points to one candidate, so one seat in each of those two pairs is likely to reopen in a later round.
Placements
Kozhikode's own website says nothing about campus hiring, and what it files with NIRF is unusually complete on paper. Every BDS graduate in the four batches below is either placed or in higher study, a record that helps its graduation outcome score.
| Batch graduating | BDS on time | Placed | Median salary | Into higher study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 49 | 29 | Rs 5,40,000 | 20 |
| 2022-23 | 48 | 25 | Rs 6,00,000 | 23 |
| 2023-24 | 48 | 21 | Rs 7,20,000 | 27 |
| 2024-25 | 47 | 21 | Rs 7,60,000 | 26 |
Since 2023-24, more of each class has gone into further study than into jobs, 27 against 21 and then 26 against 21, per the 2026 data. Attrition is close to nil in the three batches the 2026 return tracks: intakes of 50, 49 and 50 produced 48, 48 and 47 on-time graduates.
| Batch graduating | MDS on time | Placed | Median salary as entered |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 17 | 16 | Rs 30,00,000 |
| 2022-23 | 18 | 18 | Rs 33,00,000 |
| 2023-24 | 18 | 17 | Rs 35,00,000 |
| 2024-25 | 18 | 18 | Rs 35,00,000 |
Treat those postgraduate medians with caution. The column is headed as an amount in rupees, the 2025 return adds "per annum", and each figure is written out in words too, as in "3500000(Thirty Five Lakh)", so this is not a lakh entered in a rupee column. Yet it is more than four times the Rs 7,60,000 filed for BDS graduates, and the college's 2026 overall submission enters different medians for the same three MDS batches, Rs 35,00,000, Rs 37,00,000 and Rs 35,00,000.
Seat Matrix
Kozhikode's phase one BDS roll from CEE was built around 19 state merit places, with the defence and sports seats that no other government dental college in Kerala has.
| BDS seats by block, 2026 | Seats | Counted from |
|---|---|---|
| State Merit | 19 | CEE phase one allotment |
| Economically Weaker Sections | 4 | CEE phase one allotment |
| Muslim, Ezhava, Scheduled Caste | 3 each | CEE phase one allotment |
| Other Backward Hindu, Viswakarma, Latin Catholic, Dheevara, Scheduled Tribe | 1 each | CEE phase one allotment |
| Serving defence (SD), sports team event (PT) | 1 each | CEE phase one allotment |
| MCC all India quota | 8 | MCC round one matrix |
| Government of India nominee | 1 | KEAM prospectus |
MCC's matrix splits its 8 seats into 3 open, 2 OBC, 1 EWS, 1 SC and 1 ST, the same total the prospectus prints against KKD. The blocks above come to 48 of 50: CEE placed 39 candidates in phase one and 39 again on the phase two provisional list, so two state seats stayed unallotted on both lists. The students those seats produce are nearly all from Kerala, 238 of 246 BDS students, and 208 of them are women, per the 2026 data.
MDS Seats by Subject
CEE's state seats plus MCC's all India seats match the college's intake in seven subjects; in prosthodontics they account for one of two.
| MDS subject | Intake on courses page | CEE state seats (category) | MCC seats (category) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | 3 | 1 (EW) | 2 (open, EWS) |
| Conservative Dentistry | 3 | 2 (UR, SC) | 1 (open) |
| Orthodontics | 2 | 1 (UR) | 1 (OBC) |
| Periodontics | 2 | 1 (UR) | 1 (OBC) |
| Oral Medicine and Radiology | 2 | 1 (UR) | 1 (open) |
| Pedodontics | 2 | 1 (BH) | 1 (OBC) |
| Oral Pathology | 2 | 1 (BX) | 1 (SC) |
| Prosthodontics | 2 | 0 | 1 (ST) |
CEE's seat distribution is headed as leaving out in-service, minority and NRI quota seats, and neither it nor MCC's matrix places Kozhikode's second prosthodontics seat. Half of Kozhikode's eight state MDS seats in 2026 were UR, one apiece in orthodontics, periodontics, oral medicine and conservative dentistry. Surgery was held for an EW candidate, pedodontics for BH and oral pathology for BX.
Rankings
Kozhikode first appeared in NIRF's dental ranking at 38th, in the 2025 table; the college has no row in the 2022, 2023 or 2024 dental tables.
| NIRF 2025 Dental parameter | Kozhikode's score |
|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 70.41 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 8.65 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 98.19 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 54.86 |
| Perception | 41.22 |
| Total | 52.97 |
The score is lopsided. Only AIIMS Delhi, SRM Dental College and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences beat Kozhikode's 98.19 on graduation outcomes in the 2025 table, yet its teaching resources score of 70.41 was second lowest in the table and its perception score of 41.22 trailed Thiruvananthapuram's 49.65. Sponsored research money in the college's 2026 data totals Rs 1,20,000 from 3 projects in 2024-25, after nothing in 2023-24.
Its spending entries in the NIRF 2025 data repeat the same figures for all three years covered: salaries of Rs 12,00,01,204, other capital assets of Rs 33,99,000, and Rs 1,00,000 each for the library and lab equipment. The 2026 data breaks the pattern for 2024-25 with salaries of Rs 19,53,06,612 and Rs 24,80,000 on lab equipment.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
The central library sits on the college's ground floor with 2,836 books and 142 bound journal volumes, subscribes to 10 journals and offers Elsevier e-journals, according to the infrastructure page, which also shows a college bus and a mobile dental clinic. Books are issued from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on working days, Saturdays included.
Clinical kit is listed department by department. Oral medicine runs a CBCT machine and a colour Doppler ultrasound, both inaugurated on 23/02/2019, takes about 100 periapical X-rays a day and is a participating centre in ICMR's hospital based cancer registry, per its department page. Prosthodontics lists an intraoral scanner, a 3D printer and a piezo surgical unit on its page. Oral pathology has haematology and histopathology labs, offers immunohistochemistry and exfoliative cytology, and provides diagnostic service to four North Kerala districts, per its page.
The homepage links a monthly patient sheet. That OP and procedures sheet records 3,809 new oral medicine cases in July 2026 and 2,953 in August, with 17 implants placed in prosthodontics in July. The daily averages in its ranking returns do not line up with each other: 435 outpatients a day for calendar 2023 in the 2025 data, then 525 for calendar 2022 in the 2026 data.
Outreach runs through public health dentistry, which staffs a satellite clinic at Cheruppa every Tuesday, visits the Kuthiravattom mental hospital on the second and fourth Fridays and screens inmates of the district's Udayam homes under an MOU the principal signed with the District Collector on 21/12/2021, per its department page.
Hostel
A ladies hostel reserved for dental students opened in August 2010, according to the about page. Men are housed in hostels listed as MH 1, MH 2 and MH 4 under the medical college principal in the hostel rules, which set a 6.00 PM return for first years, 8.00 PM for undergraduate women and 9.00 PM for house surgeons and postgraduates. Those 2021 rules list a Rs 2,500 mess deposit, a Rs 3,000 hostel welfare fund and a monthly establishment fee of Rs 600, so check current rates with the warden.
Hostel
Faculty
The 2026 NIRF roll names 50 teachers, and it is a stable staff: five joined during 2025, nobody is shown as having left, every entry is a regular appointment, and the lone teacher without an MDS is a lecturer who joined in 1998, per the 2026 data.
Leadership turned over in 2026. Dr Soumithran C S, principal from October 2021, retired on 30.04.2026 according to the gallery page, and the about page records Dr Kannan Vadakkepurayil, a past head of pedodontics, as principal from July 2026. The oral pathology head, Dr Sudha S, retired on 30.05.2026, and the faculty page now shows Dr Resmi G. Nair heading that department and Dr P. G. Antony heading oral surgery. The downloadable faculty contact sheet names Dr Pramod Kumar A.V as principal, a name missing from the about page's list of principals.
Three departments call themselves KUHS PhD centres: oral surgery since 2020 on its page, pedodontics since 2015 on its page, and periodontics, undated, on its page. No doctorate has been completed in the years the returns cover, and the enrolled count keeps shrinking: 7 part-time scholars in the 2025 data, 5 in the 2026 dental data.

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
Kozhikode's degrees came from the University of Calicut before KUHS. The orthodontics page says its MDS was first affiliated to Calicut University, the public health dentistry page dates the move to KUHS to 2010, and the about page now names KUHS as the affiliating university. The Dental Council of India's college list carries "Government Dental College, Kozhikode" under Kerala, and the oral surgery page records DCI recognition for all 3 of its MDS seats since 2015.
On NAAC, the college has answered for itself: its own NIRF 2026 overall submission says NO to holding a valid NAAC accreditation, and gdckozhikode.in has no IQAC page, self study report or grade.
Aid
Scholarships
Help with fees at Kozhikode comes from government reimbursement, not from the college, whose NIRF returns enter nobody on institutional or private funding and whose website lists no scheme of its own. The 2026 data counts 122 BDS students with full tuition reimbursed by state and central government against 84 without, and 198 of the 246 counted as SC, ST or OBC. That is more than in the 2025 data, which entered 100 reimbursed against 125, while on the MDS side the reimbursed count fell from 17 to 13.
Student welfare also has named staff. A college office order posted as SSGP officers assigns nodal officers from orthodontics and oral surgery, the college union chairman and both hostel wardens to the KUHS student support and guidance programme.

Student Reviews
Kozhikode carries no star score on this page: no review from its students has been checked and matched to the college. Its website publishes no testimonials or feedback results. What it does show is an active alumni body: the alumni page names Dr Binu Purushothaman and Dr Navajeev Raj M N as president and secretary and says fourteen batches have held get-togethers, which speaks to attachment after graduation rather than to what studying here is like.
Campus
Gallery
Recent campus life on Kozhikode's gallery page includes an oral cancer screening camp at Udhayam Home, Chevarambalam for World No Tobacco Day in May 2026, send-offs for the retiring principal and oral pathology head, a blood donation camp held with the medical college's transfusion medicine department and a CBCT hands-on workshop in September 2025.
